Chapter 19 – Emergency contact
„Hallie what's going on? Is he alright? I came here as fast as I could." Severide said as he meet Hallie in front of the ICU entrance. All the way to the hospital he had tried to calm down but if Hallie was calling him in the middle of the night, making sure that he came here as soon as possible it would definitely mean bad news.
"We have to wait for Dawson to arrive."
"What? Why? Hallie what's going on?"
"After we separated Matt changed his emergency contact. You are named first and Dawson second. In fact it would be enough if you pull the decisions but as I know you are both close to Matt and both available I called you both." Hallie said watching the curious look on Severide's face.
"I am...he got me as his emergency contact?" Severide said surprised. After all they had been through he had never expected something like that.
"Hallie, Kelly, what's going on?" Dawson asked as she stormed towards the two of them.
"We are Matt's emergency contacts.", Severide pointed out watching the puzzled look on Dawsons face.
"We...what? What is going on? Hallie how is he?" Dawson asked watching Hallie full of concern.
"Unfortunately the infection from his wounds has increased."
"What? I thought you gave him antibiotics."
"We did but it seems like it didn't work out as good as we thought it would. Do to his heart being overpowered from the shock I am really worried about his condition. He is suffering a really high fever and his oxygen levels are dangerously low. I need your permission to hook him on a ventilator."
"A ventilator?" Severide said loudly crossing his hands over his head while exhaling deeply. He turned around to study Dawson's face meeting an expression of overwhelming concern.
"It's serious right?" Severide asked while turning back around towards Hallie.
"Yes." She answered truthfully.
"We need to remove some of the infected skin that's why we are going to take him to surgery."
"I can't believe this is happening. He seemed fine a few hours ago." Severide pointed out not believing what was happening.
"Yeah as you said he seemed fine. He was feeling the aftermaths of the shock and the increasing signs of infection the whole day long but you know him, he seemed perfectly fine to any of us right?" Hallie said.
"Damn it Casey. As soon as he wakes up we really need to have a heart to heart talk."
"So do I get your permission?"
"What are the risks? I mean it is absolutely necessary right? And...and how long is he going to be on this machine...is he going to be alright?" Severide started as the realization of what was happening kicked in hard. Panic and Adrenaline now completely in control of his body of his emotions.
"We don't know how long it will take his fever to go down and allow his heart to work normal again. Until this point we will keep him on the ventilator and sedate him. It could be a day, could be a week, we don't know yet. And yes it is absolutely necessary in his current health condition."
"Do it." Dawson stepped in her voice not more than a whisper.
"Are you sure? I mean it is the right decision...right?" Severide asked while facing Dawson again. "We don't have any other options. Don't waist more time Hallie, just do it and get him into the OR to get his wounds cleaned so his infection is not getting any worse."
Hallie just nodded while handing Severide and Dawson the papers they had to sign.
"I will keep you updated."
"Are you proceeding the surgery?" Severide asked before Hallie could disappear again.
"No it's my college Dr. House. He is a brilliant surgeon."
"Thanks Hallie."
"We should inform the guys." Severide said while getting his phone out of his pocket.
"I would like to give his sister a call. Do you have any number?"
"No, nothing."
"Me neither."
"Okay than call the chief and we can only inform Christie when she get's here."
After Severide had called the Chief it didn't take the team long to arrive at the hospital one by one. Severide was sitting in his chair deep into his own thoughts. How glad he was that he had at least visited Casey yesterday.
"You know what Dawson?" Severide asked after a long time of silence.
"No."
"I can't believe he got me as his emergency contact. I mean after everything we have been trough, after how I treated him."
"Severide you have always been his closest friend and maybe the closest thing to family he has ever had. You know everything that had happened to Matt, how he had to grow up. He trust's you and I know that he loves you like a brother no matter what." Dawson said surprised as she could see Kelly's eyes water.
"Is he going to pull through this?" Kelly's voice was barely a whisper.
"Of course he is. Matt's a fighter." Dawson answered, pulling Kelly into a hug. She could feel hot tears on her shoulder and couldn't stop her own tears from falling.
6 hours later Kelly Severide slowly entered the ICU Room his friend was in. He had tried to prepare himself for this moment but seeing Casey on the ventilator was more than he could take. Kelly pressed his arm to his mouth trying desperately to fight back a sob. He could feel Dawson's hand on his back and continued to walk over to Matt's side. His arm was bandaged and as Hallie had told them the surgery went just fine. Dr. House had been able to remove all the infected parts of his skin and now the medics would have to do the rest to fight back the increasing infection.
Chief Boden had told Kelly that he could spend as much time as needed with Casey so he got himself comfortable in Matt's room, not even thinking about leaving his side until he was awake again. Hallie had been so nice to get him a comfortable chair so he could at least find some comfortable rest.
The routine was the same every day. Kelly knew when the nurses where coming, when the doctors where checking Matt's condition, when he had to be turned around. Kelly even knew how to turn Matt from one side to another after a few days so he was helping the nurses out every now and then.
He got the newspaper every morning, reading it out loudly for Casey. He always turned on some music or the TV and continued to tell Casey everything that was on his mind just in case he could hear him.
Dawson was coming by every day for a few hours so Kelly could drive home, shower and change.
It had been their routine for the last 5 day and still nobody could tell how long Matt had to stay on the ventilator in a medical inducted coma.
