"What do you mean she's missing?!" Kol shouted through the phone after hearing Elijah's words.
"Stefan says that she went out for a run and didn't come home. That was this morning at eight in the morning." Elijah explained what Stefan had told him. "That was about two hours ago. He says she would've called him if she had been going anywhere, has she called you?"
Kol sighed, " No. That doesn't mean she's missing. Where was the last place she said she was going to? Maybe she got hung up on shopping or something."
"He said that she went out for her morning jog and she usually comes back an hour after."
"Wait she went alone?" Kol asked as he searched for his car keys, planning to go out looking for her, just because he hadn't heard a thing from Mason didn't mean he wasn't still lurking.
Elijah sighed, "Yes. Stefan had warned her not to but she left anyway. Stefan's on the verge of having a search party."
"He should have one out already. For all we know that bastard has her." Kol said before realizing that he, Bonnie, Stefan and Caroline had never told Elijah that Mason had returned.
The phone went silent for several seconds before Elijah asked, "What do you mean?"
Kol cursed under his breath as he walked to his car, "I suppose we forgot to fill you in on something…Mason has been lurking."
"How do you know that?"
"Well…" Kol said sheepishly, "Caroline and I actually ran into him awhile back…"
"And you couldn't even tell me?!" Elijah shouted at him in anger.
"Sweetheart…what did you mean earlier, when you said Mason just 'scared us'?" Nick asked Caroline as they were sitting on the bed.
Caroline sighed heavily and looked up at him, "Promise me that you won't get mad."
"Why would I?"
"The day after you proposed…I found flowers on the front porch and…they were from Mason and I went to Kol and Bonnie for help…I didn't want to tell you or Dad because I didn't want to put you in any danger…So Kol and I went to Stefan and he told us that Mason was released and he tried to keep him in jail but he couldn't. He left and Kol and I ran into Mason and he told us that he wanted me…"
"So Kol and Stefan knew about this before I did…"
She shrugged, "Like I said, I didn't want to put you in danger. Kol and I agreed to not tell you…Bonnie said she wouldn't say a word and Stefan thought it'd be best because even Rebecca was still traumatized. And we hadn't heard from or seen Mason for months."
He nodded slowly, "Until…the wedding?"
"The night before the wedding, actually. I was panicking and went outside for some air and I was really having a full blown anxiety attack and he just showed up and I passed out. I woke up screaming in the hotel room, I scared the hell out of Bonnie and Rebecca. When they calmed me down, I ran to the bathroom and…" He noticed that her voice started to quiver and put a hand over hers, hoping to comfort her, "My hair was up…and I was in pajamas and I got into the shower and saw the bruise. I wanted to tell you but I knew you'd call off the wedding and search for him and I didn't want him to win."
"You should've told me." He scolded slightly.
Before she could answer him, Caroline's phone started ringing.
Rebecca had woken to the sun beating down on her and not a single person in sight. Her iPod had been on the ground next to her, broken, much like her head felt. She reached up and winced when she touched the defined lump on the back of her head. "That bastard." She said under her breath as she struggled to get up; with a head injury, it proved to be difficult, so she stayed lying on the ground.
She was angry with Mason but even more so at herself; she had driven into town bleeding from a stab wound but a bump on the head was making her immobile? She felt pathetic. Pathetic and guilty. She sold out her brother and sister in law; yes it was to protect her boyfriend but it was still wrong.
She searched her pockets and was relieved when she retrieved her phone, as quickly as she could, she called Stefan.
"Becca?" He answered after the first ring, his voice filled with worry and fear.
Breathing a sigh of relief, "Stefan, thank God. You have to come get me."
"I'm looking for you, hell we all are. Where are you? Are you hurt?"
She sighed and started to sit up and felt the world spin, putting a hand to the stinging on her neck, she felt sticky, drying blood there. "I'm where I always run…Near the benches. And I'm really dizzy and I'm bleeding…from my neck and head I think."
"What happened?" He asked as she heard the sound of his engine accelerating.
Taking a deep breath, Rebecca answered after several seconds, "I saw Mason…"
She heard the sound of a car nearing her and the dizziness prevented her from being able to turn around, "Is that you?"
Hearing the sound of a car door opening, she heard his voice behind her, before seeing him kneel in front of her, "It's me. What did he do? What did he want?"
Dizzy or not, she reached forward and hugged him, "I helped him…I had to…He said he was going to kill you…I'm so sorry." She started sobbing.
"Becca, what did he want? What did you help him with?" He asked while placing his hands on her back gently.
"He wanted to know where Caroline and Nick were. I told him. I had to. If I didn't, he was going to kill you."
He sighed and nodded, "Okay…I'm gonna be okay. It's all going to be okay."
"But if something happens. If he hurts them, it'll be my fault." She sobbed in the most heartbroken voice he'd ever heard.
"Hello?" Caroline answered the phone, biting her nails.
"When were you going to tell me that Mason was lurking around this family?" She heard her father's voice on the other end of the phone.
She groaned, "I'm going to kill Uncle Kol."
Nick was listening from the bed and looked over to her, slightly curious.
"I deserved to know this, Caroline."
"I didn't want you to worry. I was handling it."
"Really? Running to Kol after receiving flowers from Mason is you handling it?"
Caroline looked down, "What exactly did Kol tell you?"
"Just that you received the flowers and note and you both saw Mason after talking to Stefan. Why? Was there more?"
"Um…He was at the wedding…and I saw him the night before the wedding."
Nick now knew what they were discussing and he wasn't entirely sure that he wanted to hear it all.
"He was there?!" He shouted through the phone. "Why didn't you tell me, Caroline?!"
"He threatened Nick, I had no choice."
With that said, Nick felt his blood boil, Mason had manipulated her right under his nose and he couldn't do a damn thing to stop it.
Elijah sighed, "Has he hurt you at all?"
Caroline didn't know whether to tell him or not, especially over the phone, but the pause she gave said enough.
"How bad did he hurt you, Caroline?" She felt a chill down her spine at the anger in his voice. She knew he wasn't angry at her, but it was still unnerving.
She sighed and with shame, said, "The bruise is fading…"
"Dammit it Care, why didn't you say anything? We could've protected you."
"Like Mom did?" She asked, her voice breaking slightly while she turned her back to Nick, hiding the tears that were threatening to spill.
She heard them both sigh and she shook her head, "Mom tried to protect me and she died. She died because of me. I'll be damned if I let you, Nick, Kol, Becca or any of you guys die for me too. I forbid it."
Elijah replied, "Your mother's death wasn't your fault. And nothing is going to happen to any of us, I promise you that."
Caroline didn't believe him, but for the sake of getting off the phone so she could hide in the covers and in Nick's arms, she agreed.
Stefan led Rebecca into the house just as Elijah was setting down his phone, he gently sat her on the sofa while Kol came into the room from the kitchen.
Both Elijah and Kol stood in shock for a moment, seeing the blood on Rebecca's clothing.
"Honestly, it's not that bad. My head is just throbbing and I'm dizzy, is all." Rebecca assured them as Stefan walked briskly to the bathroom to get some painkillers and a bandage.
"What did he do?" Kol asked as he sat beside her.
"Cut my neck a bit. And he hit me over the head after I stupidly gave him what he wanted. Oh god, I need to call Caroline and Nick. I need to warn them." She said, rambling slightly as she tried to get up. If Elijah wasn't there to catch her, she would've fallen face first onto the floor.
"Wait…Warn them about what, Rebecca?" Elijah asked as he helped her stand.
"I had no choice, Elijah. I'm so sorry." She apologized, beginning to cry again.
Stefan came back in with an ice pack, bandages and aspirin, "I think she has a concussion, a friend of mine who's a paramedic is on his way. I didn't want to stay out there."
"What did she do or tell him, Stefan?" Kol asked before Elijah could.
Stefan sighed, starting to bandage Rebecca's neck while Elijah held her, "She told him where Caroline and Nick were. Apparently he threatened to kill me if she didn't."
"So he's going to go to Caroline." Elijah assumed.
Stefan shrugged, "Most likely. I need to call Nick, once I know Rebecca is okay of course."
Kol stood up, reaching for the phone, "I'll call them."
Elijah sighed deeply, "When in the hell will this end?" He asked to no one in particular.
"If we're being honest, it won't end until Mason or Caroline is dead…" Stefan admitted and Elijah, though unwilling, agreed with him.
