CH59
Rick watched Kate drive off taking Alexis with her. Martha was still upstairs and he hadn't had a chance to talk to her about being gone yet.
Rick left a note on the refrigerator and plugged in an address into his GPS and started the almost 2 hour drive.
"This has risks associated with it Jack. The hospital is going to have security cameras all over the place." Rick talks to him on the drive out there.
"I have a thought about that." Jack tells him.
"Really, do tell." Rick is interested.
"You still have some of that climbing gear in your trunk?" Jack asks.
"Yea, not enough storage lockers in the garage yet. Something I forgot to tag when we moved in. Something I need to take care of now that you remind me." Rick replies.
"There are likely to be a lot fewer cameras on the roof of the building." Jack leads him to what he is thinking.
"Repel down the side of the building?" Rick questions. "The door to the roof is likely to be locked."
"You already have what you need for the door in the trunk. And the hospital is surrounded by other buildings. That location is tight with commercial buildings." Jack tells her.
"Yea I had already planned on using them. Just hadn't thought about going up instead of going down." Rick comments.
"We will likely have to be moving fast. When I say change I need you to change the disguise provided there are no camera's in your scanning range." Rick tells him.
"Understood." Jack tells him.
"I need you to monitor the device I leave behind on his at all times. It is possible he will get scared instantly and hopefully do something stupid." Rick warns him.
"Also understood." And the rest of the drive is done in silence.
Rick parks at his designated location and calls for a taxi, carrying a small standard, bought it at Target duffle bag.
Rick exits the taxi and pays him with his first disguise already in place. He takes the stairs all the way up to the top floor and blows the lock on the door with a little pop sound.
Up on the roof he finds just the spot he is looking for and anchors his line and leaves the bag and harness behind. Before stepping thru the door into the stairwell again. "Change."
Rick walks down the stairs to the level he wants and starts walking down the hall. Greeting people as he passes. Entering the Dialysis room he finds the room has a number of people in it.
There are two other people in the room using the 4 available Dialysis machines. He goes to each of the other two first. Checking how they are doing. Checking the access site for swelling, bleeding, or signs of infection.
As well as checking the tubing for any leaks. He asks each of them a few questions about how they feel and then moves on to the next.
Coming up to the Senator. "How are we feeling today?" Rick asks.
"Aggravated, tired."
Rick starts checking the access site. "2 to 3 times a week can be tiring. You know there are thousands of people that have this condition."
"Yes so I've learned." ….. "Owe!" The Senator looks at him asking silently if he was an idiot.
"Sorry, just checking the access point for any signs of bleeding or infection." Rick apologizes after injecting his little toy into his arm near the site.
"You know you can get this equipment and do this at home." Rick points out.
"We're already looking into that. It requires training of the person who is going to do the monitoring."
"Everything looks fine." Rick tells her and leaves.
Up the staircase, since he already had this planned. Just as he reaches the door. "Change."
Rick gets into the harness, attaches the rope and leans out over the building. Then repels down the side of the building. At the bottom he removes the rope and takes the harness off and leaving it all behind starts walking.
Rick enters a small business that looks like a sub shop. He walks thru all the seating to the back and out the door. Once he's outside he finds himself in a delivery alley. "Change." And Rick takes off jogging down the alley.
He spots a larger chain multi-floor building. Rick enters and goes to the center elevator bank and presses the up button after looking at the floor list.
Exiting the elevator he walks straight for the restrooms, stepping into a stall. "Change." Flushes the toilet and goes back down to ground level and back outside and calls for a taxi that will take him near his car.
Getting out of the taxi he pays the driver the exact amount shown. Leaving a tip would make him memorable. Finding a dark covered area. "Change." And walks for his car and drives off.
Halfway home. "Drop the disguise." Rick tells Jack.
"How'd we do?" Rick asks Jack.
"The device you left is working perfectly. He is still connected to the Dialysis machine, however that should end soon. And there were a couple of camera's along your route. However nothing near your car." Jack tells him.
"It may have been excessive but you can't be too careful." Rick comments.
Jack gives him updates of what he is hearing around the Senator all the way home.
"Richard, they have found the flash drive you left behind as the Senator got out of his chair. They are now on alert. One is headed for the security office to get a copy of the security tapes. Another is calling in help to have the hospital searched." Jack tells him.
Rick is almost home. "They have found the harness and rope you left behind. They are collecting it to see if they can trace it." Jack tells him.
"Yea good luck with that." Rick had bought it on-line years ago and had it shipped using a fake name and card he no longer has to a PO Box he also no longer has. Just like the duplicate set-up he has in the garage that he moves into the trunk as soon as he gets home.
"Just a reminder Richard, it is now middle to late September. I will run out of banks in about a month." Jack warns him.
Stepping into the living room. "Mother?" Rick finds her sitting on the sofa leafing through some magazine.
"Richard, I take it you are home from wherever you went." Martha is not really mad, but is only to willing to slap his hand.
"Yea sorry about that. I didn't know I was going anywhere until late last night." Rick apologizes.
"Another late night jaunt with Jack? … NO you should probably not answer that. Katherine is likely to start doing this also isn't she?"
"Separate of together, yes she is." Rick is forced to concede the point.
"Just tell me what you are doing is right." Martha asks. Hoping her son has not gone all Sith Lord on her.
"Yes mother what I'm doing is right. Far too many have been killed just for one man. I'm still a Jedi Master, if that is what you mean." Rick tells her.
"And Katherine?" Martha fears for her.
"I don't think you have anything to worry about mother. Kate is a homicide detective for a reason. Getting the bad guys is all she knows and I think she likes the results of her work.
If people stopped killing people tomorrow and forced her out of a job she would be right up front celebrating. Until then she'll do her job and do it well. She just has another boss now is all.
And if she found out that even he was doing something bad she would take him down too." Rick assures her.
"Besides she has us to help her to being a Jedi Master." Rick comments.
"Richard, did Katherine ever get to talk to her mother?" Not sure she even believes, but for Kate she will.
"Why don't you ask her when she gets home. It's more her story to tell." Rick tells her. "I think she would love to share it with you if you asked her.
"I'm going to go pick up Alexis. Will you be here for dinner?" Rick asks her.
"Yes dear, I'll be here." Martha had no plans.
"Alexis and I will give you and Kate some time tonight. Ask her mother, she's probably dying to tell you." And Rick gets up and leaves to collect Alexis.
Kate and the guys didn't get a body drop all morning. Out of boredom Kate went to lunch. She was on her way back when a little girl came up to her looking scared. "Can you help me find my mommy?"
Kate bends down to her. "Are you lost honey?"
"I need to find my mommy. Can you help me, please?"
"Can you tell me your name honey?" Kate asks her.
"Ell." The little girl tells her.
"Do you know where your mother was when you lost her?" Kate needs a clue.
Ell just shakes her head.
"Do you know your mother's name honey?" Kate needs something to work with.
"Sam." Ell tells her.
"Sam, do you mean Samantha?"
Ell nods her head.
"Can you tell me her last name?" Then Kate will have something.
"Greenway." Ell tells her.
"Ell and Samantha Greenway, you better come with me honey." And Kate stands up and reaches to take her hand only to find it go right through her.
"Oh great!" Kate talks to herself. Kate now wonders what that looked like for whoever saw her. This just got harder.
"Can you follow me honey?" And Kate starts walking back to the 12th looking behind her to see if Ell was following her.
Ell followed her all the way to her desk. Now comes the hard part.
"Espo, can you look up a Samantha Greenway for me. Somewhere in New York. See if you can get an address on her.
"Did we get a body drop I don't know about?" Espo asks her.
"Sort of, just look it up please." Kate didn't need questions.
Espo turns to Kate. "I've got a Samantha Greenway and an address, she also has a daughter, ..." And is interrupted by Kate.
"Ell." Kate tells him.
Espo gets a funny face. "How did you know?"
"I'm a detective Espo." Kate teases him.
"Well than you don't need me to tell you she's downstairs with Lanie." Espo tells her.
Now Kate is shocked. "She's dead?" Kate closes her eyes. Now she has to find a dead mommy for a dead child. This is beginning to sound like one of those TV shows. She even has a husband she loves with all her heart.
Kate gets up and heads downstairs to see Lanie, looking to see if Ell was still following her.
"Hey Lanie." Kate greets her as soon as the doors open.
"Hey girl. I didn't know I had anyone down her that was one of yours?" Lanie is wondering what got her down here.
"You don't technically. What can you tell me about Samantha Greenway?" Kate asks her.
"She was found in the park, obvious strangulation. Last nights team was assigned to her case." Lanie tells her out of courtesy.
Kate knows she can't step on someone else's case. "Can you at least tell me where they found her, exactly?"
Lanie breathes in deeply. "Sure." And hands Kate the file showing where exactly.
"Do I want to know what this is about?" Lanie talks to Kate's back as she is leaving.
"Probably not." Kate tells her over her shoulder.
Kate goes back upstairs to get the address to her residence and then down to her car. Kate gets in and makes sure Ell is still following.
Kate drives to the site in the park and starts walking making sure Ell is still behind her.
Kate finally reaches the site that still has some yellow tape around it. Kate starts walking the perimeter.
Not seeing anyone, only one thing left to do. "Samantha?" Kate calls out. "Samantha Greenway?"
Kate waits and looks around not seeing anyone except Ell. Leaving Kate to wonder if she has to go to her residence next.
"Sam, are you still here?" Kate asks more softly. Kate waits.
Convinced that the next place is the next one to go to. "Mommy!" And Kate twists around to see Ell running and slams into a woman a little ways away.
The woman kneels down and wraps her arms around Ell.
Kate wonders if this is what her and Alexis look like when they do this.
Sam holds Ell for some time until she stands and walks towards Kate carrying Ell.
"Thank you!" Sam tells her. Then turns to look somewhere. "We have to go." Sam tells her.
"Yea, I've heard that before. I'm happy to have helped." Kate tells her. Then watches her turn and start to walk away.
"WAIT!" Kate yells at her. And Sam stops and turns.
"If you see someone named Johanna Beckett, tell her that her daughter loves her." Kate tells Sam as tears start.
Sam just smiles and then turns and starts walking until they both slowly vanish.
"If this works I can send her messages. I'll just never know if she gets them, or get a reply." Kate tells herself.
Kate starts walking back to her car when she hears a woman scream. And takes off running pulling out her cell phone as she goes.
Kate stops to listen and can hear her crying but not saying anything. Kate puts her phone away and pulls out her weapon. Kate moves forward slowly.
Coming into view is a black male with his pants down on top of a woman who is trying to struggle while crying as the man is struggling to get her bottom sweats off her.
Kate walks slowly up to them from behind basically. Kate steps past their legs and bends down and shoves her weapon just between his shoulders. "NYPD don't move." Kate tells him and he freezes.
"You so much as twitch and I'll put a round in you. …. Now you are going to slowly put both hands behind your back. Do it now." Kate tells him while giving her weapon a little push.
As the man complies Kate puts her knee in his back and pulls out her cuffs with one hand and slaps them on one wrist. Just as she is about to do the other the man lurches up and twists violently.
The action makes Kate loose her balance and fall to one side. As the man gets up with his pants down around his ankles he reaches for a knife that was strapped to his leg that would have been under his pants.
Kate flips on her side and raises her gun and puts three rounds in his chest which launches him backwards.
Kate gets up to check his pulse and not finding one. "Are you alright miss?" Kate turns to the white woman lying on the ground still crying and a little scared still.
Soon there are four uniforms around them. Kate and the woman are forced to remain on scene while they give their statements.
The woman is taken by ambulance to the hospital as a precaution. Kate is back at the precinct to find out that Roy is forced to put her on desk duty pending the results of the shooting.
Meaning Kate gets to go home a little early, barely.
