Chapter 15

I turned over and rolled off the table onto my feet. I caught the childishly-excited look on Caleb's face, before attempting to straighten myself out.

"So, Daleks, right?" I asked as I massaged my formerly singed skin.

"Yeah. Jess, you need to stop taking a bullet for someone. And that includes things other than bullets like electric volts and death rays," Jack said after receiving a look of agreement from Ianto.

At this time, the Doctor and Rose peeped over the rail. "Hey Jess!" They called.

"We're going to take Caleb off your hands, ok?"

"No! Please don't make me leave!" Caleb was begging. "I don't want to go back!"

Jack's eyes were compassionate, and he refused to look either his younger self or me in the eyes. He stayed silent, and pondered. It was like he was trying to see in his memories what ends up happening. His intense thinking was disrupted.

"He can stay here for a while," Ianto said.

"Ianto…" Jack began,

"Sir, didn't you have a similar story? Don't you want to help him?"

As if in question of what to say, Jack shrugged his shoulders. "He can stay for a little while, but not permanently. His birthday's in a week, and I don't think we can have two teenagers around here." He winked at me.

Ianto and Jack went to the captain's office.

"If you don't mind me asking, who is he, ss-?" Ianto caught himself before saying sir. Jack grinned at this.

"He's an old friend," Jack lied.

"Jack, I know you better than that. You are lying. Who is he?" The tea boy's face remained soft as he stared down at his shoes; a mannerism which his boss found quite intriguing.

"I think it's funny how you haven't realized yet… Ianto, he's me." The captain was waiting for a reaction.

Ianto practically face-palmed and started to laugh. "That makes more sense. He is basically just like you!"

Jack laughed as well. "I just am not sure what to do, I don't really remember much from my childhood, aside from my mum, dad, and Gray."

Ianto waited until Jack's eyes met him. "Sir, if you bring in many more children, this will become more of an orphanage than a Torchwood hub."

The immortal man considered mentioning the fact that Ianto had been the one to let him stay, but he didn't. Instead, he simply gave a quick nod.

"So your name was Caleb?" A quizzical eyebrow sat perfectly raised above one of the mortal's sparkly eyes.

He grinned. "Like it?" His only response was an eye roll.

I had taken Caleb downstairs. I wasn't sure which room he would stay in, so we just went to mine.

"Caleb, why don't you want to go home?" I asked.

"Everything at home reminds me of everything I've done wrong," he sighed. "Don't you have a family? Or is Jack your father?"

"No, I have a family, but they think I am dead. I died, then I came back, but I was already here. I don't think they would believe I was truly alive if I returned." I sighed and fell backwards onto my bed. He awkwardly sat on the other end.

We talked for a while. Different topics came up, and both of us ended up tearing up, then we both started laughing.

"What's that thing in your ear?" He asked. "Jack had one too."

"It's my comms unit; I can communicate with anyone from Torchwood wherever I am. It's pretty useful when I'm out somewhere."

"So you could hear whatever Jack is saying right now, as long as he has his unit on?"

"Yeah," I said, inviting Caleb over and pressing the button on the unit. "Jack?"

There were a couple muffled noises, and then an awkward reply. "Jess?"

I saw the boys face light up, and he talked about the fact that this was a different technology than he had back home. It might have been more primitive, but he found it amusing.

"I wanted to show Caleb how my comms worked," I said.

I talked to him for a little while, before he left to order dinner. We were going to be eating carry-out, as usual, from a restaurant off the plass. We were going to eat outside for a change.

Just as we went to sit down near the bay, there was a large cracking sound. The sky began to darken, and we looked up to see a large ship covering most of Cardiff. The eight of us bolted upright, and stared at it. Trapped within a beam beneath it, was the TARDIS.
