I stare at the slip of paper my teacher handed me, as I headed towards the cafeteria, racking my mental schedule to see if I would even have time to tutor anyone else outside of Inuyasha.
Honestly, he takes up more time, effort, and patience than I had originally believed when I first decided to improve his grades. The idea of dealing with others does not sound too appealing. I slip the paper in my skirt pocket as I walked in to the crowded noisy room. My eyes scan the room landing on the popular table.
I spot Bankotsu's long black braid as he stood up a little and began trading snack items with Jakotsu and some other students. I suddenly noticed that a particular red head was not in her usual spot, his lap.
My eyes travel down the table to the other end and they land on her. Her cheek rests in the palm of her hand as she looks down at her food, silently stabbing the sad excuse for meat with her fork. She looks up and turns her head slightly as if to speak to the student next to her, but instead she continues to turn and looks directly at me. Our eyes lock and I suddenly began to feel a soft throbbing in my left temple.
The pain began to increase, but I couldn't look away. My peripheral began to blacken, the room grew blurry, and my throat felt tight.
"Hey, Elizabeth."
The pressure in my mind released, and I stumble forward. Sango manages to catch me with her free arm.
"Woah, are you ok?"
"Yeah….I….yeah, I'm fine."
"Are you sure, you look really pale. Maybe you should go to the nurse."
"No…I'm good. Just tired." I look up and see Jewel's back to me once more.
"If you say so. Come on, we're eating outside." Sango walks past me, and I stare at Jewel a moment longer before following.
"Sango, what do you know about Jewel?" Sango pushes one of the side doors open with her shoulder and uses her back to hold it as I walk through.
"Not a whole lot really. Just that her real name is Esmeralda Katz, her family are decedents from demon slayers like mine."
"Demon slayers?"
"Yeah, back during the feudal era, there were humans who made it their life mission to hunt and kill demons. There were factions though, some believed the world should be completely purged while other only did it out of protection. Now, there aren't really demons slayers per say, but there is a division in the police force that specializes in handling rouge dangerous demons. A lot of the descendants from the demon slayers of the feudal era keep their traditions alive by joining this police force. My family and Jewel's are the most predominate officers, but not the only ones."
"I see."
"Yeah, and from what my father has told me, Jewel's grandfather and mine used to be really close, but that all changed when the Demon Pact amendment was added to the Constitution. After that, Jewel's grandfather became really radical and cut the ties with mine not wanting to be friends with a "demon lover."
I see Inuyasha and two other sitting beneath a large oak tree. A man waves at us, and Sango waves back, "Whether or not her family is still that radical, I don't know, but it will probably be safe to tread lightly with Jewel. I hear she's a bit off her rocker."
"Wow, Inuyasha. Now I can see why Bankotsu is after her. Your sister is quite lovely."
"Watch it Miroku." Sango and Inuyasha says simultaneously, and the man named Miroku gives off a sheepish grin.
"Just making an observation Sango, don't get jealous. You'll always be the girl I want."
"Oh lucky me," Sango mutters as we both take a seat on the soft blue blanket. "And I said that so she wouldn't do the same thing to you like she did to Jewel in gym today."
"And anyway, Bankotsu ain't after anyone. He's bad news all together."
"Ain't is not proper English, Inuyasha." I say as I open my bento box, "Plus, I can take care of myself."
The girl next to Inuyasha hits him, "Oh, yeah right ElizabethKagome, kagomeelizabeth"
Kagome glares at him, "Introduce me right Inuyasha."
"I did, geez."
I laugh a little and shake her hand.
"Kagome." She says smiling.
"Elizabeth"
"I agree with Inuyasha, Elizabeth. Bankotsu hangs around some pretty rough guys outside of school." Miroku says wiping his mouth.
"Yeah," Sango chimes, "I hear he's in some sort of gang."
"SEE! I told you, Lizzy. DANGEROUS."
I sigh, "What kind of gang?"
"What do you mean what kind of gang?! The only kind. The bad kind."
"No," I begin my patience wearing thin. "Everyone is in a gang of some sort, including you four. There are malicious gangs, and there are benign gangs."
"I can't believe your defending him!"
"I'm not defending him. I simply wish to have all my facts straight before I judge someone."
"Well it sure sounds like your defending him."
We glare at each other, and Kagome laughs nervously to break the silence.
"So, Elizabeth, are you going to the fall fair tonight?"
I surrender the match and look over to her, "The what?"
"It's a stupid fair the student council puts on every year."
"It's not stupid, Inuyasha! We work very hard every year, and each year is a success. Plus, all the funds from this so called 'stupid fair' are used to support athletics and academic teams; including your precious kendo."
Inuyasha grumbles something under his breath, and Kagome glares at him. I see his face pale slightly, and he quietly begins to eat his food.
I'm really beginning to like this Kagome.
"So?" she asks turning her attention back to me.
"I have plans tonight." I say finishing my rice and starting on the beef portion."How long will it last?"
"Including this night, three nights total."
"Well, I may drop by tomorr-"
"Whoah wait! Did you say you have plans? What plans?!"
"Yes, I have plans, and they are none of your business. I have a life outside of you and Sesshomaru."
"Like what?"
I glare at him and his audacity, "NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!"
He returns my glare, and I see his eyes grow wide. Suddenly, our faces are inches apart, and he pulls my head to the side exposing my neck,
"Excuse you!?"
"WHAT IS THAT!?"
"What is what?"
Sango, Miroku, and Kagome all gather around me and look. Miroku begins to chuckle.
"It seems the lovely Elizabeth has been doing some between-class necking, by an upperclassman no doubt."
His eyes grow wide and shiny, "It must be great to be a Senior. All those lovely ladies at your dispos-"
Sango's punch connects beautifully to the top of miroku's head, "Can it, you pervert."
"A HICKEY! A HICKEY!"
I push Inuyasha away from me,"Shut up, Inuyasha."
"Here, Elizabeth."
I grab the compact from Kagome and see for myself. It is a dark bruise about as large as a thumb print….in fact….it looked just like a thumb print.
"WHO THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN KISSING!?"
"No one, you idiot. I have no idea how that even got there."
"REALLY! You really expect me to believe that! Who is he, Lizzy. I'LL KILL HIM!" His eyes suddenly grow wide, "Its Bankotsu isn't it! It's the damn mother- I'LL KILL HIM!"
I grab a hand full of his hair and yank him back down again.
"Inuyasha, for the last time, neither my neck nor my lips have been touched by a man."
"Well, technically that statement didn't clear the other gender at this school." Miroku says with a smile.
I see a small wisp of smoke rise from Sango's fist as she stands over the unconscious miroku.
"Pig."
I look back at the mark and then check my other side. There were four more marks each resembling a fingerprint.
"It looks more like a hand then a hickey." Kagome says looking at my other side as well.
Inuyasha gets closer and examines each of the four marks, "What the hell happened to you, Lizzy?"
A sudden trickle of fear runs down my spine, and I shiver.
"I'll see you all later."
"You should get that checked out." Sango says softly
"I will."
"Want me to come with you?" Inuyasha asks, and I shake my head as I gather my things.
"No, I'm fine. I'll see the nurse, and then pick up Iggy's homework like I promised her."
"Oh, tell her I said get better." I nod to Kagome, agreeing to pass the message along, and walk back towards the school.
I adjust Iggy's books in one arm as I make my way through the empty hallways. My hair is pushed to the front to hide the marks. There is no need to see the nurse. I know where they came from, and despite myself, I am scared.
A set of hands land on my waist, and Iggy's books fall as Bankotsu catches my backhand.
"Your reflexes are amazing."
"Unhand me."
He does and to my surprise, gathers the books I dropped.
"So we're still on for tonight?"
"Still on what?"
He laughs, "That's cute, but seriously."
I stare at him completely lost before it finally hits me, "Oh! You are referring to our date."
"Yeah, what else would I be?"
"I don't know. You said something about being on something or another." I grab the books and continue to walk down the hall, "I swear all this slang is infuriating. Just say what you mean."
He follows,"Well?"
"Well what?" I say slightly distracted.
He grabs my free hand forcing me to stop and look at him, "Our date?"
"Yes? What about it?" I ask growing impatient.
"You never answered my question."
"What question?"
"Geez girl, your memory is bad."
"No, my memory is fine. You are the one not making any sense."
"I asked if we are still going out."
"And I already gave you my answer."
"When?"
"When I told you to meet me at the library at 6 the first time you asked. There is no need for confirmation. If something changed, I would have told you. Furthermore, my life does not revolve around you. Regardless of how other girls in you past have reacted, I will not drop everything I'm doing just because you approach me."
"I didn't say you had to."
"But you expect it."
"I do not."
I lift up my hand currently in his grasp, "You stopped me because my mind was not fully on you."
"Well excuse me, but I thought it was good manners to give someone your full attention when you're talking to them."
I open my mouth to respond, but stop. "…..touché."
He smiles, and I lean against the wall.
"Fine, you have my full attention. What do you want?"
I immediately regret saying that as he comes closer completely invading my personal space.
"Well since you asked." His lips connect with my palm, and I push him away.
"If you don't have anything serious to talk about, then I must get going."
He tilts his head to the side, and stops me from moving. Slowly he pushes my hair back and smiles.
"Well, well, well, looks like you not a prude after all huh."
I swat his hand away, "Excuse me? For your information, this is not what you think it is, and even if it was what you think it is or if it was not, I AM NOT A PRUDE."
"Calm down, I'm not judging you. All I'm saying is that they are a little small, but" he places his hand next to my head, "I would be more than happy to make them bigger for you."
"I don't have time for this." I say as I roll my eyes, slip under his arm and head down the hall, "Plus, I don't think Jewel will be too happy when she hears that her boyfriend is giving out hickeys to random girls in the hallway."
"We broke up." He says casually and I stop.
"What?"
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure I told you I would."
"Well my goodness, you don't have to sound all torn up about it."
He laughs, "I was more of a 'I broke up with her' kind of deal."
"Well did you at least do it gently?"
He smiles, "I always do it gently."
I give him a disgusted laugh, "and with that statement this conversation is over. Goodbye."
"Oh, come one Elizabeth it was a joke."
"It was vulgar."
I knock on the classroom door, and the teacher motions me in.
"Here to pick up Iggy's work?"
"Yes, sir."
Bankotsu leans on the door frame, "That's the whole point of the joke."
I say nothing.
"Here you are. Tell Iggy I said to get well soon."
"Will do."
"Oh, what? So you're ignoring me now."
I walk pass him and down the hall.
"You can't ignore me Elizabeth…I mean it. If you keep this up you're going to make me do something you're not going to like…I'm serious, stop ignoring me…..Alright but don't say I didn't warn you."
I hear him rub his hands together followed by feeling a smack on my butt so hard a scream escaped me, and I jumped forward. I close my eyes trying to keep my rage in check before turning to face him. The end of lunch bell drowns out the smack of my slap.
"GAh! DAMNIT!" He yells clutching the spot where my claws dug a little too deep in his flesh.
"The next time you do that, and I'll take an eye." I turn on my heel and vanish into the sea of students.
