Tobias POV
I push my gun against the woman's temple, and she slowly nods. She scared. Good.
She takes me down a couple hallways, and some Amity soldiers follow. It's like a maze in here. Everyone stares at us, and no one makes a sound. She stops in front of a door and opens it.
Tris POV
I crawl on my knees in the air vents, hoping no one in the rooms hears me. It's pretty small up here, even for me. I stop when I hear Tori's voice, screaming at Jeanine. She's talking about George, the one who died because of Jeanine. Wait, how is she not under the simulation? Is she Divergent too?
I look down through an opening of the air vent and see what I feared: Jeanine with Tori. Jeanine is pressed against a wall with Tori aiming a gun at Jeanine's head. Tori says, "You killed George because of his divergence, remember?!"
Jeanine sternly insists, "I don't remember having a George Wu killed!"
"Do you think that means you don't deserve to die?!" Tori screams. I push myself through the opening and land a few feet away from them before Jeanine can answer.
Jeanine looks at me with surprise. She obviously didn't hear about my escape yet.
Behind them is a glass table with a silver box on it—a computer—and a keyboard. The entire far wall is covered with a computer screen.
There's no way I can find the video file without Jeanine's help.
"No!" I scream. "Tori, don't!"
But her finger is already over the trigger. I launch myself at her as hard as I can, my arms slamming into her side. The gun goes off, and I hear a scream.
Jeanine slumps against the wall with blood on her thigh.
I reach for the gun, but Tori pulls me away. She climbs over me and chokes me. I didn't risk my life to have Tori kill shoot Jeanine before I've gotten what I needed.
I knee her in the stomach, and she doubles over. I grab the gun and aim at her.
"I didn't think you'd be helping her, Tris," Tori mutters bitterly. If only she saw what happened around an hour ago…
"I'm not," I say, "She's the only one who knows where the-"
"That's right!" Jeanine screams. "It is on that computer, Beatrice, and only I can locate it. If you don't help me survive this, it will die with me."
"She is a liar," says Tori. "A liar, and if you believe her, you are both an idiot and a traitor, Tris!"
"I do believe her," I say. "I believe her because my mother told me about it. She even gave it to me before she died! I had it but it was taken away!"
I take a deep breath, and lower my voice. "Please listen to me. I hate her as much as you do. I
have no reason to defend her. I'm telling you the truth. This is important."
Tori is silent. I think, for a moment, that I've won, that I've persuaded her. But then she says, "Nothing is more important than her death."
"If that's what you insist upon believing," I say, "I can't help you. But I'm also not going to let you kill her."
Before I can even think about firing the gun I'm holding—
She draws a long knife from the side of her boot, lunges, and stabs Jeanine in the stomach.
I yell. Jeanine releases a horrible sound—a gurgling, screaming, dying sound. I see Tori's gritted teeth, I hear her murmur her brother's name—"George Wu"—and then I watch the knife go in again.
And Jeanine's eyes turn into glass.
Tori drops her knife and begins to give a terrible, maniac laugh.
Tobias POV
I walk in to find a strange woman laughing over Jeanine's dead body. Next to them is Tris staring wide-eyed at Jeanine's body. I walk to Tris and hug her. Thank god she's alive.
I order a soldier behind me to, "Take that woman to the infirmary," over Tris' head.
I hear him mutter, "Yes, sir," before helping the woman up and leaving the room.
"Are you okay?" I ask. She slowly nods. I reluctantly pull away and walk to the computer. I want to talk to Tris, but first thing's first. I type in a long sequence of numbers and letters, overriding the system. Slowly the system begins to shut down. I press one more button, and I hear loud sighs of relief. Some crying.
A soldier enters the room with a guy in blue. Tris' eyes harden at the sight of him. "Caleb." Her brother. From the looks of it, he betrayed her. I walk over to him and drag him to the computer.
"Give me the video file," I order.
His lips begin to quiver from fear. "You don't know what the information is going to do to the people," he weakly argues. Do I really need to repeat myself?
I bring up my gun and push it behind his head. "Give me the video file," I repeat.
He reluctantly puts in passwords. There are even more letters and numbers now. When he finally reaches to the video, I shove him out of the way. He accidently bumps into Tris and awkwardly steps back at her glare. He's afraid of his sister.
I pull the video up onto every screen in city. Evelyn's not going to be happy about this. Tris seems like she knows about the video too. I stand next to Tris and squeeze her hand. She squeezes back.
The computer screen on the wall now has a woman with short brown hair. She sits at a metal desk with her hands folded, at an unfamiliar place. The background is too dim.
"Hello," she says. "My name is Amanda Ritter. In this file I will tell you only what you need to know. I am the leader of an organization fighting for justice and peace. This fight has become increasingly more important—and consequently, nearly impossible—in the past few decades. That is because of this."
Images begin to quickly flash across the wall, almost too fast for me to see. A man on his knees with a gun pressed to his forehead. The woman pointing it at him, her face emotionless. From a distance, a small person hanging by the neck from a telephone pole. A hole in the ground the size of a house, full of bodies. And there are other images too, but they move faster, so I get only impressions of blood and bone and death and cruelty, empty faces, soulless eyes, terrified eyes. I feel sick from watching this.
"You do not remember any of that," she says, "But if you are thinking these are the actions of a terrorist group or a tyrannical government regime, you are only partially correct. Half of the people in those pictures, committing those terrible acts, were your neighbors. Your relatives. Your coworkers. The battle we are fighting is not against a particular group. It is against human
nature itself—or at least what it has become."
"That is why you are so important," Amanda says. "Our struggle against violence and cruelty is only treating the symptoms of a disease, not curing it. You are the cure." I hold in my breath at that.
"In order to keep you safe, we devised a way for you to be separated from us. From our water supply. From our technology. From our societal structure. We have formed your society in a particular way in the hope that you will rediscover the moral sense most of us have lost. Over time, we hope that you will begin to change as most of us cannot."
"The reason I am leaving this footage for you is so that you will know when it's time to help us. You will know that it is time when there are many among you whose minds appear to be more flexible than the others. The name you should give those people is Divergent. Once they become abundant among you, your leaders should give the command for Amity to unlock the gate
forever, so that you may emerge from your isolation."
"The information in this video is to be restricted to those in government only," Amanda says. "You are to be a clean slate. But do not forget us."
She smiles a little.
"I am about to join your number," she says. "Like the rest of you, I will voluntarily forget my name, my family, and my home. I will take on a new identity, with false memories and a false history. But so that you know the information I have provided you with is accurate, I will tell you the name I am about to take as my own."
Her smile broadens, and for a moment; she looks familiar…
"My name will be Edith Prior," she says. "And there is much I am happy to forget."
Prior. I look at Tris and turn back to the video.
The video stops. The projector glows blue against the wall. Tris clutches my hand, and there is a moment of silence.
Then the shouting begins.
Hopefully you guys liked this last chapter! :)
Tris POV
They take my body to a room. My body is in too much pain to move on its own. There, I see a man with an orange serum. I try to stop him from injecting me, but I'm too weak. They easily overpower me. Then the man pushes the plunger. My heart begins to race. All my muscles in my body relax at once. A heavy, liquid feeling fills my limbs. If this is death, it isn't so bad. My eyes stay open, but my head drops to the side. The man closes my eyes for me.
But I'm still breathing; not enough to satisfy, but breathing.
I feel Tobias' hand squeeze my hand, and I try to squeeze his and tell him I'm alive. But I can't move. I hear Tobias crying, and it pains me. I also hear a girl's crying…Christina? I continue trying to wake up, make any movement to tell them I really am alive, but nothing. After a while, they leave, and I stay like that for what seems like days. They moved my body to another room with a lot of machines that beep, and I do wake up later. At first, I try to escape, but they easily catch me in my weak state.
A man introduces himself as "Aaron" after I calmed down and explains what happened. "I injected you with quadriplegic serum, and it's just like the paralytic serum Peter injected you in the past. It just lasts longer."
I ask him, "Why wouldn't you let me talk to Tobias, let him know I'm alive?"
Aaron sighs, "I can't let him know you're alive, ever."
Something in me goes cold. I tell him, "You can't be serious."
He gives me a pity look and says, "I'm sorry, but everything is done. Technically, you're dead."
"I'll tell them you lied," I warn him, "You can't keep me like this forever."
"Tobias will move to a new city and will eventually forget you," he says, "You, on the other hand, will have to help the government. You have proved yourself resourceful and will help with other experiments. Maybe if you do a good enough job, I'll let you see Tobias and Caleb. You won't actually get to meet them, but you'll at least get to see them. How does that sound?"
That sounds awful, but I have to let him believe I'm satisfied with it. I'll meet them, one day.
"Deal."
