A/N: Hey Guys, so back on the job are we? (This is the part when I cry my heart out to you because Allegiant crushed all the left pieces of my previously crashed soul! But no worries, I will not post spoilers). Anyways, I apologize for my long-time procrastination but I'll try to continue this story now, although I won't promise anything. I hope you enjoy it as much as you used to!
Chapter Twenty-Five – A Plot Twist
Is'S POV
Of course I'd felt the tension in the room when Marcus had assigned us our new jobs, but said tension was nothing compared to the stress we were in the next morning – the morning of our first day of classes.
Emmett was still asleep when I woke up and got a shower, trying to let the warm water relax my muscles, but once I came back into the bedroom already fully dressed in Abnegation-grey clothes, he was sitting on bed, wearing only his boxers and his mind working at full speed. He looks up at me.
"We can still ask for another job, you know? There's no need for us to risk our lives," he says. A little creased is formed between his eyebrows which makes me smile at the memory of old memories in the Dauntless compound, when I'd touch him in that exact same spot and all of a sudden all his problems seemed to vanish. But we have greater problems now; problems that my simple touch cannot fix.
I climb to the bed and let him pull me to his chest – it fells strange to do so when surrounded by all this grey, being constantly reminded of all the selfless rules of our new faction. I let my fingertips slowly run along his muscled arms.
"Emmett, anywhere we go, our lives will be at stake. I thought we'd be safe here, but I'm guessing we've both figured it won't be like that. You understand that, don't you?" After a second I feel him nod, as his chin slightly touches my head a couple of times.
"But when we were with the factionless, you were so scared?" I could hear his confusion in his voice.
"Oh believe me, I still am," it was still a weak spot for to talk about how this all just freaked me out, but it was Emmet here with me, so there was no point in pretending. "Yet what good will running do to us? Besides, this will allow us to keep an eye on Emily, and perhaps on Evelyn too."
"Talking about Evelyn," he says, reaching for his pocket, "this was downstairs." He hands me a small sheet of paper.
How about a walk home after work? You know where to find me. Eve.
"Eve?" I ask, the name sounding a little off when incomplete.
Emmett shrugs. "She really does try hard, I guess."
I nod, and get off the bed once again. "Better get ready, lazy ass. Don't want to be late." He eyes me, as though saying 'look who's talking', but he stood up anyways.
Half an hour later we were heading to the Hub, where our Choosing Ceremony had taken place. While we waited for the bus, Emmett and I had barely talked, but now that we were sitting on one of the back seats, his hand was slipped into mine. Every once in a while, he'd say something like "it'll be okay." I wasn't sure whether he was talking to me or to himself. Either way, it was making me even more nervous, but I decided it was better to keep quiet about it.
Once in the Hub, we had to sign some papers on the entrance, saying that we'd maintain whatever was said to us on our classes under secrecy, not that it mattered much to us anyways, it wasn't like I was going to give any true information to Evelyn.
"Second floor, first door to the left. Your instructor will be right in," the Secretary told us and we thanked her. Upstairs, in the classroom, we find some other Abnegates in there and, to my own surprise, Tori. She looks at us, astonished, but I mutter 'talk to you at lunch time'. She still eyes me for a few seconds, as though she was trying to tell me something, however, when she looks up past me, her eyes open wide. I turn back and what I see is definitely not what I was expecting when I said what I'd said that morning.
I feel Emmett's hand on my back, right above my 'Divergent' tattoo, as though he was trying protect me by covering it. "Emily," he says in a bitter tone.
At lunch break, Tori joins us in the Hub's cafeteria.
"You knew my sister?!" I accused her, even if in my lowest tone of voice.
She looks around for a second, making sure no one was listening.
"Look, Is," she said, the way Kate would talk to me when she broke when of my toys when we were kids, "I wasn't sure she was your sister until I confronted her with it, which was after you left the compound without warning me. Do you have the slightest idea how much time I had to spend in a closed room with Eric because you and your friends all decided to flee?"
"You know why we had to run!" Emmett intervenes.
"Yes, I do, and I'm not blaming you, so please do not blame me either for trying not to harm your girlfriend even more than she'd already been." Tori hisses.
I notice that people are starting to stare, and that my so called sister has just arrived.
"It's alright," I say, "I was just caught up in the middle of it. Let's all calm down, okay?" And at that I look at Emmett. He seems to notice Emily too, as he nods.
None of us spoke until our food was served.
"So are you going to tell me how you two ended up as Abnegation members?" Tori finally asks, before she bites into her tuna sandwich.
I grin. "Let's just say that Candor did not only taught us how to tell the truth. It also taught us how to not be caught whilst lying."
"Fair enough," Tori smiles back, and I can tell that she knows I'm hiding something, but that she's pleased with it. "I missed you working with me though. You have talent."
"I miss home too," I say, thinking that it was what the Dauntless compound had become after all, not matter how we had tried to deny it when we left. There had been the first place where both Emmett and I had felt like we belonged somewhere.
Despite being behind all the other initiate Abnegates, we soon caught up with them (I guess they didn't have the Erudite side advantage that we did) and I could tell that even Emily was impressed by our efficiency. Tori and some older Abnegates were already working on what would be the new test; a blonde Erudite seemed to be perfecting the serum's formula; while the younger ones like me mostly learned how to manage the program.
Soon enough we were out of the building again. I decided our work wasn't all that bad – Stiffs usually got much worse. If it wasn't for the dangerous proximity to Erudite, it'd have been perfect. In the end, I guess I was just happy that at least in this new faction I got to work with Emmett.
Said boy was walking by my side, strangely silent as we made our way toward factionless ground.
"What's up," I asked, taking the chance to lace my fingers with his now that no one was watching.
"Nothing," he shrugged, "I was just dwelling on how messed up our lives are. So easily are we likely to find ourselves in completely unknown ground as we are to find a familiar face."
"Very philosophical of you," I commented.
He laughed. "What I mean is that I miss my family, Is."
Suddenly, I stopped walking. Damn it, I thought. I'd almost forgotten about what I'd asked Kate to do.
"Is?" Emmett draws me back to reality. "What is it?"
I bite into my lip, not sure what to say. "Look Emmett, I need you to go meet Evelyn on your own, no questions asked. Just tell her that I wasn't feeling well and went home. You may even tell her that I might be pregnant if that'll convince her." I look at our united hands as I speak. I hated to have to lie to him, but he'd hate me if I told him in how much danger I was putting his sister in.
Emmett unlaced our hands and touched my chin to lock his blue eyes with mine. "Is, the truth?"
"I can't. Not right now anyways. But as soon as I know something, I promise I will tell you, alright? Just trust me on this one."
"I always trust you, Is, now will you please tell me what's going on?"
"No time," I said. "But I need you to meet Evelyn. I'll rendezvous you back at the Abnegation faction." I get on my tip toes and kiss him, letting my fingers lace on his dark hair for a moment before I pull back. "Oh, tell her we're volunteering at the Hub, okay? Whatever you say, don't tell her what we're really doing."
"But Is-"
"Not now," and I take off running.
There was no time to go our little train car and then back to our house in Abnegation before night time, so I'd have to pray I'd find Kate at Zander's apartment.
I was already in factionless ground so it didn't take me much time to get there. Unfortunately, though, no one seemed to be inside when I knocked (more like hit the door with all my strength without breaking it). I waited for about half an hour and was ready to leave when the door suddenly opened.
"Isabelle?" Zander asked, confused, but letting me in anyways.
"Well that took you some time to get to the door." I protested as I walked past him, into the apartment's small living room.
"I was sleeping, I work at night remember?"
"Oh. Sorry. Is Kate here though?" It was stupid question, I know. If she had been there she would have opened the door, but I had to ask.
"She should be-"
"Seriously, never again!" We heard Kate's voice shouting. "Your boyfriend is the-" But then she burst through the opened door and saw me and apparently forgot what she was saying, although I must say it confused me. Who was she talking to if she didn't know I was here?
"Isabelle!" She screamed, and all I saw in the next few seconds was blonde hair all around me. "Thought you'd never come!" When she finally lets go of me I see a blonde boy behind her.
"Isabelle, this is Mat," Zander says, "He-"
"Works with her in the Hub," Mat finishes his sentence, and only then do I notice his Erudite clothes.
A/N: Ta-da! I guess Emmett wasn't at all wrong when it came down to his philosophical sentence was he? So, I hope you enjoyed, please do review, and Merry Fourtristmas (*le cry*) to you all!
