Chapter 7 - Forest Temple (West)

The tunnel wasn't deep, for that I was grateful, but it smelled. There were two Keese there to greet us at the other end, along with a bokoblin and three Deku-Babas, none of which saw or reacted to us. There was also that little monkey, screeching frantically in her little cage.

Quietly, I pulled an arrow and my bow from my bag. I struggled a bit to pull the bowstring back, arm trembling minutely as I aimed the arrow. I'd done archery club back on Earth before, for about a year, but those bows had been well-used, loosened up. This bow was new, stiff. I loosed the arrow, but missed my mark. I'd been aiming for it's head, but the arrow ended up in it's right collarbone. It never knew what hit it. The job was done, but I was irritated with the bow and the arrow.

"Right, now what?" I asked after Link took out the Deku-Babas, and we freed the monkey. It seemed she made the decision for us, as she scrambled up the fines and started squeaking at us, motioning 'come on' with her arms. "Or we could just follow her." I suggested, looking to Link to get his opinion. Midna came up from Link's shadow, and she looked amused.

"Hey, it's that monkey that stole your lantern. Doesn't it look like she's beckoning to you? Aren't you the popular one?" she teased Link with a loud giggle.

"You're hilarious, Midna." I sighed. She just giggled again, returning to Link's shadow while he began climbing the vines. With a few seconds of concentration, I was already up there. I know it seems like I was flaunting my new ability, but I just wanted to get a feel for it, to get better at using it.

My thoughts froze when I heard a chilling scream from up ahead; a human, female, scream. I looked to Link and quickly pulled him up the last bit to the top. He'd heard the scream too.

I stopped at the circular door, unsure if I would be strong enough to roll it out of the way. Pushing the thought aside, I braced myself and pushed it to the right. It budged loose, but it took another push to get the wooden rolling door moving. I held it open long enough for Link to get through, ducking in myself before letting it go. My eyes instantly took in the new, lighter room, to look for the source of the scream. I saw that the Skulltula that was usually dangling in the center of the room was off of its web, and standing over an obscured figure on the ground. I didn't stop to consider my options before I ran forward impulsively. I was glad I still had my sword in my hand, because it looked like I'd be using it.

My initial attack didn't do much against the bugger, because of the thick skull-like shell on it's body, but it did distract it from whoever the poor girl was. I waited for it to rear up, to attack me, before I struck again at it's exposed underside. The disgustingly huge spider let out a shrill squeal - something spiders really shouldn't be able to do - before falling on it's back, it's spindly legs tensing up and shrivelling. I shuddered, before turning to see who it was I'd rescued.

Before I even moved, the gears in my mind were turning. Both Faron and Ordona had told me there were three other people from Earth with me, it was just a simple matter of finding them. And there was a good chance that this was the first one. The other two were somewhere in Eldin -most likely Kakariko- and Lanayru -most likely somewhere in Castle Town. But now I would find out who it was. And when I did see, I wanted to look at the sky and say "of course". But, I didn't. I was too excited for that.

"Bethany!" I exclaimed, torn between grinning and demanding if she was alright. From a quick look-over, she was, except for looking scared out of her mind. I grabbed her hand and pulled her up, unsurprised when I was suddenly being hugged.

"Celia! Oh my god, what the heck is going on? Where are we?" my friend demanded, her voice reverberating off the walls. I winced a little bit at the loudness, my ears having always been sensitive to things like that, before answering her question.

"We're in Hyrule."

"..."

"Any questions?" I asked when I was greeted with silence. Bethany's hold on my ribs began feeling constricting, so I spoke up again. "Bethany, let go. I get that you're happy I saved your butt, but I'm having a bit of trouble breathing." Her eyes were wide as she did so, her expression expectant, like she was waiting for me to tell her the punchline of a joke. There were a few seconds of silence, before I heard someone clear their throat awkwardly. I looked over to see a very confused Link, obviously wondering what exactly was going on.

"This is Bethany Marshall, the one I told you about." I explained. Bethany turned her head to follow my gaze and her eyes widened even more. I quickly put a hand over her mouth just as she let out a scream that would put fangirls worldwide to shame. I frowned irritably, cringing slightly away even as I had my hand over her mouth, it was still loud. She glared at me for a second, her scream trailing off. I suddenly heard myself squealing when something wet touched my hand. Bethany had licked my hand!

"Ew! Bethany, that's disgusting!" I squealed, wiping my hand off on her shirt. I looked to Link again. "Sorry about this, we'll just be a moment." I promised, grabbing Bethany's arm and leading her well over to the other side of the room. With my own experiences, I knew that Hylian ears were more partial to hearing whispers than human ears.

"What is going on, Celia?" Bethany demanded in a whisper when we were a reasonable distance away. "Why the heck are we in Hyrule?"

"I can't answer that right now, but we're in the Twilight Princess videogame. What happened to you? How did you get here?"

"I could ask the same of you!" she snapped. "What do you mean 'We're in Twilight Princess?'" she continued.

"I mean, we're in Hyrule, in the storyline of Twilight Princess, in the middle of the Forest Temple in Faron Woods." I said lowly. "Now, what's the last thing you remember from Earth?"

Bethany nodded her head as she slowly regained her composure.

"I was babysitting Adam and Hailey. We were playing Hide-and-Seek in the basement, and I just sort of... passed out. Then I woke up in this room, and that Skulltula attacked me, and you showed up." she explained. "The memories are a bit fuzzy." she then confessed. I shrugged one shoulder.

"It's fine. I should have been expecting this, though. I never thought it'd be you here." At my friend's curious look, I elaborated. "Ordona, the light spirit in the village, told me that there were three others from Earth that came to Hyrule, and that I had to find them. One in Faron, one in Eldin, and one in Lanayru."

"Right. This is really freaking me out. I mean... extreme phobia of spiders, plus giant spider set on killing me, plus finding out I'm in a videogame... It makes for the questioning of one's sanity." she sighed.

"I know the feeling. I can explain everything else once we get out of here, but we've got to get rid of Diababa first, and get the Fused Shadow. But once we do that, I promise I'll tell you everything I know about this." I promised. Bethany nodded, and we returned to Link. "Now, proper introductions are in order; Bethany, Link. Link, Bethany. And... Midna. Midna, come up please? You can trust her." I then called, looking to Link's shadow. Midna came out apprehensively, narrowing her eyes at me.

"You're sure?"

"Yes. I've known Bethany since I was a baby, she's practically my sister. I'd trust her with anything. Shall we? Our simian friend seems to want us to follow her." I gestured to the monkey on the platform, still squeaking at us and waving her arms.

It was windy outside, annoyingly so. My hair was constantly being whipped into my face, and it actually stung a little bit. Bethany was lucky, at this point. Her hair was tied back into a braid, only a few short strands waving around with the wind.

Going as far as to actually use my hand to hold my hair back, I watched as the scene oh-so-familiar from the videogame unfolded in front of me. The monkey was scampering across the bridge, obviously meaning to lead us across, and the 'Monkey Leader' Ook appeared. The strange evil bug was on his head, and the Gale Boomerang was in his hand. Said boomerang glowed with a dark, eerie aura as the monkey flung it with a screech. The ropes holding the bridge together severed in several places, causing it to collapse down the middle.

The female monkey, having clung to a panel in the bridge when it fell, scrambled back up on our side, making a sad noise as she looked back to the monkey leader.

"Woah, what just happened? Has there been a monkey fight?" Midna asked. "Well... it looks like we can't go that way. We might as well go back." she sighed. With that, we returned to the previous room. Once we got back inside, the monkey seemed to have an idea of her own once again. I simply followed her down the stairs that we'd raised beforehand, beckoning for Link and Bethany to do the same. Once we reached the main platform, the monkey turned to the west - our right - and shimmied up onto the vinelike rope suspended between the platform and the doorway to which we were headed.

Link went first, once realizing what the monkey intended for us to do. The gap was longer, and a bit higher up than the game depicted, but he made it across easily enough, falling into a somersault to soften his landing.

"He's a lot taller than I imagined he'd be." Bethany whispered. I shrugged, already knowing this, motioning for her to go ahead. She had to take a running start, being shorter and not as strong as Link was, and she made it across easily. Now it was just me. It looked like a pretty long jump... I shook it off. I could do this.

I started running before I could lose my nerve, and jumped at the last second to get as far as I could, to actually reach the monkey at all. She caught me, and I swung a few times before letting go, to make sure I had enough momentum. Unfortunately, said momentum was a bit overcompensated, which sent me stumbling right onto the ground. That was embarrassing. I rolled from my stomach onto my back, sitting up to see a gloved had a few feet away from me. It was Link's. I grabbed it, and he pulled me to my feet like I weighed nothing more than a feather.

"T-Thanks.." I said quietly, my face going red when he let go of me. 'For Din's sake, I'm such a clutz!' I thought embarrassedly. He chuckled a little bit.

"No problem." he replied easily, before going to roll the door open in front of us. Bethany giggled at me, elbowing my ribs and giving me a suggestive look. I rolled my eyes and lightly shoved her before entering the hallway we now had access to. I saw the gathering of rocks to our right, as well as the bombling in front of it. Bethany and I stood back from Link as he readied a pellet in his slingshot. The pellet was flung with enough force to activate the bombling and roll it back a little ways, and the moment it did the three of us ducked down. I actually hid behind my shield in case of flying debris, and kept Bethany close behind me. Link was across from us on the other side of the hallway, and his pose was similar to my own. The hissing, sparking sounds grew louder before - BOOM!

With the loud explosion came a shower of rubble hitting my shield with noisy clangs.

"That's a lot louder than in the game." I whispered to Bethany, my ears still ringing a bit. She nodded, rubbing her head a bit, and we moved towards the revealed area. I frowned when I saw one of the jars wiggling, but then I remembered it was Oocoo, the human-faced bird-thing. I kicked the jar a bit, and it broke, freeing the Oocca female. She yelped, bouncing on the ground once before recovering and standing up, ruffling her feathers. I wanted to giggle. It was strange, but also amusing to see such a creature.

"Phew! Out at last! Gracious... Once I got in there, I couldn't squeeze back out! You were a big help... Thanks!" I smiled, but Link had a total 'Wtf' look on his face, which Bethany giggled at. "I've been looking for something in here, you see. Gracious, yes! You must need something here, too. Shall we try working together for a while, fellow adventurers?" she asked, looking to Link, who unsurely nodded. Oocoo could sense his hesitation.

"You may not think I look like much, but I can be quite helpful! I can even warp you out of here if you want to leave! So don't think of me as a burden! Now let's get started!" she enthused. I held out my arm to her, and she was about to hop on when she gasped delightedly.

"Well, if it isn't little Rosalie!" she squealed happily. "Oh, it's been ages since I've seen you, dearie! And goodness, how you've grown!" she continued, looking me head-to-toe. I shrugged at her, a little confused at how she knew me. "Oh, you don't remember me, do you?" she asked. I shook my head. "Well, I'd imagine not. You've been gone a long time. I was younger than my son when I met you, and it's been almost ninety years since then!"

My eyebrows shot up. If that was true, I'd been born in Hyrule nearly a century ago. Which, of course, I already knew. It was just strange to hear it.

"Um, Celia, why did she call you Rose, and how do you know her?" Bethany asked. I smacked a hand to my face as I realized I still hadn't told her. Once we came into the West Wing of the temple, I found an excuse.

"I'll tell you once we kill Diababa, okay?" I whispered just to her. She wasn't pleased, but nodded. I squeaked in surprise when the Deku-baba appeared from the ground, and I remembered that that one wasn't dead. Just as it would have taken a snap at me, I used Farore's Wind and reappeared behind it, quickly slashing with my sword, and it's Venus Flytrap-like body was severed. Bethany gaped.

"How did you use that? That was only used in-" I put a hand over her mouth, holding a finger to my lips.

"The Hero's Shade gave it to me when he gave Link the Ending Blow." I explained. She nodded, and I took my hand away from her mouth, giving her a look that said 'Watch what you say around Link' before hopping across the wooden platforms and went to the first door, forcing it open and walking in after my friends.

We ended up outside again, but the wind wasn't as strong as before. Once we were out there, I saw there was a rotating bridge, which turned with the wind. The wind was just finished turning it from horizontal to vertical as we got to it, so we were able to cross without stopping. The bridge was a lot more unsteady-feeling beneath my feet than it had looked in the game, which made me even more wary when crossing it than I would have been on a normal bridge over a...bottomless chasm... I quickly snapped my gaze up so I wasn't looking into where I would go if I fell.

Bethany took out the Keese flying around by - surprisingly - throwing rocks at them.

"Very resourceful." I commented with a grin. Then I saw Oocoo shivering, and I opened my pouch to let her in. It was a little odd seeing her get shrunk down to fit in the bag as well, but I shook it off. 'It's a Zelda Game, everything's weird.' I thought, shaking my head slightly, opening a second door. Then I saw it was the four-way room, with the wind-bridge.

"We have no way to get to the bridge without falling. We'll have to go back." I sighed. Bethany stopped me though, wandering over to the chest that I hadn't seen before. I smacked my hand to my face again, realizing I'd forgotten it. When Beth reappeared, she had a triumphant expression on her face. She handed me the small key, which would unlock our next location, and Link held the door open for us again.

"Okay, now to unlock that door." I sighed, but yelped in surprise when a smaller Skulltula lowered directly in front of me. Link leapt forward beside me, smacking the creature and it fell into the water. Apparently they don't know how to swim, because it sunk to the bottom immediately. Link jumped across the large gap first, pulling himself up. Bethany went next, and Link caught her before she could fall into the water.

With a sigh, I darted forward, but my power erred on the lower side. I landed, but I had to flail my arms to try and not fall; a wasted effort. Before Bethany or Link could grab one of my arms, I tipped backwards, falling into the water. I scowled as I surfaced for air, and I saw Bethany laughing, clutching her sides tightly. I quickly swam over to the shallow water, climbing up to the stairs near the entrance, hopping across the platforms again; this time I got help from Link as I jumped across, as he didn't seem to care that I was soaking wet.

Bethany was still snickering; I shot her a glare as I stuck the key into the hole, twisting it. The lock unceremoniously fell to the ground, having released all the chains.

"We should probably re-wrap those." I was surprised at Link's voice. I saw him looking at the bandages on my wrists. "And you never gave me a chance to look at that bite earlier." he reminded me. I repressed a yawn, but nodded my head at him.

"After we rescue this monkey." I said, observing the monkey in the cage, on top of the wooden...totem pole, thing. At least, it looked like a totem pole. I couldn't tell one hundred percent, since it was actually pretty dark in the room. It had been night out when we got here, so I really shouldn't have been surprised that it was dark, or that I found myself getting sleepy.

It looked easy enough to do, really, rescuing the monkey. One would just have to rattle around with the totem pole until the cage was knocked over.

"You should wait here with Bethany. She hasn't got a weapon, and there could be something waiting for us." Link said. I raised an eyebrow at him, before simply jumping over the railing and using Farore's Wind to get myself to the bottom safely. I gave him a look, waiting for him to come down. Bethany didn't, seeing as she really didn't have a weapon, but that was probably for the better. Not waiting for the hero, I slammed into the unstable wooden pillar. The shoddy cage wobbled, but didn't fall. Right about then Link reached me, and he finished the job. The cage fell, the poorly-made thing breaking and snapping. The two monkeys - for the one that helped us to get here had joined us - clapped and squealed together like young kits, a sight which made me laugh.

The little fuzzy moment came to an abrupt end when we heard the enraged screams of the Bokoblins. My eyebrows shot up when I saw a problem; there were definitely more than two of them. It was like the hoards of the stupid things that all came after you in Skyward Sword! One, two, three, four...there were five of them. That couldn't be too hard. There were two of us this time, instead of one.

"Don't you even think about saying 'I told you so'." I warned Link when we were back-to-back, with the stupid purple-skinned monsters surrounding us. The monkeys had fled up the stairway, far from their reach, and I saw Bethany watching worriedly from above us.

I heard Link laugh behind me, replying to me with, "Wouldn't dream of it.", before we engaged the Bokoblins. Link was actually able to dispatch three of them with a single spin attack in seconds, and I barely handled two. I felt envious over his skills, but didn't think much on it. He'd been training with a sword since he was eleven, like he'd told me before.

Poor Bethany looked traumatized when Link and I rejoined her back at the door with the monkeys. She shuddered, looking away from the mess below us, and we left the room with the two monkeys in the lead.

"Two more, and then we can get to the bridge." I reminded her softly.

"We should stop for the night." she said. I nodded my agreement. We were all tired, and we all knew it too. Link agreed too, but thought it a better idea to return to the main room. It was a lot nicer once we did so. That, and the torches we'd lit earlier were still there, so they provided some warmth. We agreed that we'd go to the eastern wing tomorrow.

That, and now that we were in a time of peace, Link insisted on examining the wound I'd received from the Deku Baba earlier, as well as changing the wraps on my wrists. Something told me that even if I'd tried to argue, I would have lost, so I just gave in and let him look at it.

"You got lucky with this, only a few of them even touched your muscle." he stated, referring to the Baba's teeth. I nodded. "I'm no doctor, but these will heal up well on their own." he added. Bethany was just shaking her head at me, when it was explained to her that I'd been bitten because I wasn't paying attention.

I stayed quiet when he unwrapped my already-loosening bandages -from which the blood had started to soak through already, given that they hadn't had time to heal on their own yet- from my wrists. I grimaced when I gave my own assessment of the damage. There'd definitely be scars there, I could tell that much. There were places that had scabbed over, and others where said scabs had torn. It wasn't hindering my movements too badly.

He took less time than I had to re-wrap them, and after that we quickly went to sleep. Well, Link and Bethany did. I couldn't sleep, and I didn't know why.

Uli hadn't been kidding before when she said the nights were cold. Even with my cloak, I still felt a chill in the air. But then, looking at poor Bethany...

I couldn't justify it. The cold, I could tough it out. Bethany's immune system was weaker, and she was more prone to getting sick than I was. Quietly sitting up, I slipped the cloak off my shoulders and draped it over her, laying back down in my spot. I waited for several more minutes before sleep started creeping up on me, and the day was finally over for me.

A/N: I finished this at twenty minutes to four in the morning, don't judge me. I hope you liked it, though.
