Chapter 5

Conan POV

My apartment was a decent sized one with a bedroom, a bathroom and a main living area, as well as a backroom that I converted into a storage place for holding my more secretive hobbies.

I'd murder anyone for knowing this but, in there, which is locked by a genetic code by the way, is a shrine to Ran.

I AM NOT A STALKER!

She's just my rock, my love, nothing to do with the 'small headache' at all! (Complete denial)

Sorry, I went off topic. Anyway, there are also some of my more inconspicuous weapons, like my shoes with hidden blades (which were too big for me now) and my poison dart watches, each with a different kind of poison.

This room is also where I keep the family 'kill journal'. It was a final gift from mother, which contains all information on all the official kills the family has made over the years. It also had information on all FBI, CIA or any other government agents hired throughout the generations of the family, and any and all threats to the family business as well.

Needless to say, it's important. I am currently working on putting it all onto a memory stick, but the file is large and it was taking a while. At the same time though, it was compact and surprisingly easy to carry, so it fits into clothing when it needed to be carried around.

Anyway, back to packing to never return, but staying in the area. An old friend of the family runs a hotel that acts as a getaway for all types of criminals. It's perfect for when you're caught in the act or escaping a court case, or even waiting for the stature of limitations on your crime to run out. On the front it's a regular tourist trap hotel, but the police don't know about the back to back business model.

'Then again, what they don't know can't hurt them.' I thought with a smirk.

I only packed the basics so that any police searching for Shinichi as a 'missing person' wouldn't get suspicious.

'Then again, Shinichi is technically missing. Conan took his place…' I realized apprehensively with a heavy heart.

I packed my untraceable mobile phone that I use to get in touch with my clients and vice versa, my wallet with all my loose cash in it, the folder and my memory stick.

I lock down, hide my back room and lock up, casting the now closed front door a longing look.

'Sigh' I really liked my apartment… 'Just one more reason for revenge on the completely obvious criminal for ruining my life.' I thought despondently, as if discussing the weather.

'Saddest part is, I couldn't have even of ratted on them, it was just extortion after all.' I continued.

I continued walking aimlessly down the streets, deep in thought, when those thoughts strayed to Ran and her seemingly depressed state.

'I should go check on her…just in case,' I thought with a smile as I headed to her and her father's apartment.

I stopped and sat down on a bench opposite the ridiculous window sign 'Kogoro Mouri Detective Agency,' and scoffed. 'What a joke, the man couldn't find a clue if it jumped in his hand and screamed at him. Even I would make a better detective, and I'm an assassin.'I let a small smile grace my lips at the thought.

As I sat there, several people, mostly women (not being sexist) asked me if I was okay and I answered them a quick and sickeningly childish sounding dismissal, such as an "I'm alright", "I'm waiting for mummy and daddy" or the ever famous, "I'm not allowed to talk to strangers".

Half an hour of tedious waiting later, I saw the dreaded Sonoko Suzuki march up the apartment in her school uniform, and then march up the steps with a worried frown on her usually plastic face.

'Oh yeah, today's a school day…' I thought wistfully, remembering I should be there, and would be there, if not for those completely obvious criminals I felt revenge for.

A short time later, Sonoko reappeared, prattling on and happily dragging a, still absent minded, but faintly smiling Ran behind her.

A moment later, a slurred masculine voice shouted down at them, saying something about dinner and Yoko.

'Kogoro must be drunk again…' I thought angrily. My head pounded like a construction site as I got the immense desire to strangle all life out of the failed detective for how he treated Ran. My fists curled in tight, drawing blood where my fingernails were.I managed to calm my headache and diminish the desire to merely a passing thought, of which I have often.

'Mother would have been so proud.' I thought still seething.

I came to the conclusion to follow her as the empty stare, despite the smile, still had me worried. A small pain erupts in my head because of this, but I ignore it and follow Ran around 'shudder' shopping.

The emptiness in her eyes dimmed into helplessness, something entirely better than looking dead, as Sonoko prattled on non-stop with her usual mindless chatter.

'Even Sonoko can be useful sometimes…' I thought with a sly smirk on my childish features and my headache reduces immediately.

Ran POV

I just couldn't help worrying about Shinichi. I kept telling myself that he was fine, and that I was just overreacting and Shinichi would come back later to tease me for worrying about nothing. Then I could hit him for making me worry and we'd laugh about it together…

But I hadn't seen him ever since he disappeared at tropical land. When I went to check on him at his apartment, security came along. And today at school, he hadn't shown up at all.

Had he gotten into trouble? I know that sometimes there are things he hides; even from me, but whatever it was this time couldn't be so bad that he couldn't go to school, could it? I didn't know, I wasn't sure, and I couldn't stop thinking about it…

'KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK'

"Raaan! The door!" My father called, slurring his words a bit.

I pushed my depression to the side for a moment. I took a second to pull myself together before opening the door with a smile. To my surprise it was Sonoko at the door.

"Sonoko? What are you doing here?" I asked.

She had a scowl on her face and her hands on her hips. "What am I doing here? You've been moping around all day, and I'm here to fix that!"

"But Sonoko-" I began, but she interrupted.

"No buts! We're going for a night on the town!" With that, she grabbed my hand and pulled me out the door. Despite myself, I couldn't help but have a small smile at my friend's attempt to cheer me up. Luckily no one was outside except for a little boy on a bench, so we didn't get odd looks.

We went shopping in at least a dozen stores, not even counting all the boutiques in the mall. It actually did make me feel a little better to have fun with one of my best friends, and this was the kind of thing that Shinichi's "man pride" would never let him to do.

There was just one thing though. Throughout our little shopping adventure, I just couldn't seem to shake the feeling that someone, somewhere, was watching me. I wasn't sure what it was, but that presence seemed to follow us for at least the first six stores. After that, it just… left. Nothing happened, and maybe I was just being paranoid, but still.

"Come on Ran! Let's go grab something to eat!" Sonoko called. I smiled again.

"Alright, coming!" Yeah, it was probably just nothing.

Conan POV

I decided that Ran is stable enough to be left alone, given the unfortunate circumstances that my 'little predicament' has put us both through, especially sweet, innocent Ran.

I turned away and started making my way to the 'Kriminala retirigo*1'.

'I hope Ran doesn't start doing drugs.' I thought mournfully, having done many jobs for drug dealers with non-paying customers.

My phone suddenly started ringing my job dealer's ringtone, he's an underground middle man, who is the go between for the clients and the assassins of Tokyo. He plays a billionaire playboy for the public as a cover up.

I changed Conan's voice to Shinichi's voice and answered the phone.

"Hello."

"Hey kid, I got you a job. A group called the Black Organisation is funding it."

I raised a curious eyebrow, intrigued about this 'Black Organisation', and made a mental note to check the file later.

He continued, "Pays higher than your normal hits, but this ain't no normal target, it's Kaito Kid."

"The thief," I replied, my Shinichi voice sounding incredulous, "What'd he do to piss off a shadow organisation?"

"Don't know, kid, but are you taking the job or not?" he asked sounding half curious and half exasperated.

"Oh, I am won't be a problem at all!" I reply confidently, a plan forming in my mind for revenge on this 'Black Organisation' that I have a feeling obvious criminal #1 and #2 belong to, and this Moonlight Magician would make an excellent pawn against them if they do.

"You have 'till the end of the month to kill him to receive your payment, good luck kid." He hung up.

I put on an innocent grin and headed towards 'Kriminala retrigo', my mind forming the plan to meet my ends as I go.

AN:

*1 Guess what language that is in comments, it's one of my favourites to use in fiction but this is the first time I've gotten a chance to.

Sorry about the non-activity, but I lost my inspiration and creativity, and I HATE this chapter, it's filler, and god was it boring to write, boring but necessary I guess, still a couple of chapter before Kaito Kid makes an appearance and one of the characters makes a disappearance, not saying who though, just know it'll be a main one this time and not an OC, can't decide how to kill the person though so if any sick minds have any gory suggestions, I'm all ears.

Again thanks to RoxyConan-Kun for doing the beta, and sorry for the wait on this update, I've no excuse save for boredom and laziness.

Also thanks to Assasin8 for writing the Ran bit and pointing out a plot thing I got wrong {2 month away will do that}, awesome contribution dude, also that for the website suggestion for the magic kaito info, whoever reviewed that to me. {I am really lazy and don't feel like checking} so thanks.

Again sorry for the wait and enjoy!
