Chapter 6
Jean was getting suspicious. Ever since Hermione came home from Hogwarts three weeks ago, she had been acting differently. She looked like she was always on edge, she would snap easily, and she would check their windows every five minutes. Jean knew her daughter was worried about something, and was trying her hardest not to look suspicious. But of course, as her mother, that was impossible.
Before the school year ended, Jean and Dan were adamant to talk to their daughter about what happened last summer. They needed answers. They needed to be assured that their only child is safe and being taken care of. Neither Arthur nor Molly replied to their letters. They were angry for a while, knowing that they were betrayed by the people they entrusted their daughter with. They even tried to write Ron, but he never answered either. They just don't get how they could brush them off like they were nothing.
But now that Hermione was home, and seeing her act weirdly around them, they didn't think forcing the answers from her would get to anything. They tried doing that last summer, and looked where that got them? Their daughter ran away with Ron Weasley. Dan was angry at the boy for weeks. Wizard or not, Dan was ready to strangle the boy from taking their daughter away from them.
It was a cloudy Sunday afternoon. The sun was nowhere to be found, and the ground was damp. It had rain a couple of hours ago, and the Grangers stayed inside the whole morning. Hermione locked herself in her room, making no noise at all while the older Grangers sorted out some paper works from the practice that they couldn't go through during the weekdays because of how busy they were.
Not too long after, they heard Hermione's soft footsteps going down from the stairs to their office. They looked up to see her chewing her bottom lip, and looking at them worriedly.
Dan broke the silence first. "What do you need, darling?"
Hermione hesitated before answering, "I-I need to talk to you."
"About what," Jean asked.
"Some things," Hermione replied quietly.
Jean and Dan glanced at each other and dropped what they were doing and turned their chairs to face their daughter properly. Hermione walked over to the loveseat on the other side of the room, and took a seat.
"This is about Hogwarts," Hermione started. "You know that Professor Dumbledore died a few weeks ago. There will be a new headmaster this school year."
"We know," Jean said. "Is this about what we told you before? About leaving Hogwarts and finishing school somewhere else?"
"Not exactly, Mum. I mean, I'm planning to leave Hogwarts, but I'm also not planning to go to another school."
Dan looked at his daughter confusedly. "I don't understand, Hermione."
"I'm not planning to finish school, Dad," Hermione replied firmly.
"I still don't understand, Hermione," Dan's voice starting to rise. "You love Hogwarts. You love learning and education. You've worked hard for six years! It's your last year! I know we've said some things about leaving Hogwarts but if this is your plan then we don't really think leaving is a good idea anymore!"
"There's something—," Hermione started but was cut off by Dan.
"Is this about Ron Weasley? Did something happen? Are you pregnant?" Dan bombarded his daughter with questions.
Hermione looked affronted and stifled a groan. "No, Dad! This has nothing to do with Ron!"
"That Harry Potter bloke, then?" He asked again.
Hermione started to chew her lower lip again.
"What happened, then, Hermione? Did he do something to you?"
"No!" Hermione exclaimed. "It has something to do with Harry, but he didn't do anything to me. No one has done anything to me, yet."
"What do you mean by 'yet'?" Jean asked, participating to the conversation.
"You were right," Hermione said which made Jean and Dan edge on their seats. It was rare their daughter says those three words together, and they knew she will give them the answers they've always wanted to get from her. "I'm in danger."
Three hours later, Hermione finished recollecting her adventures to her parents. They asked questions in between her stories, and she would answer them patiently. Jean and Dan were sad, disappointed, and angry throughout their daughter's story; sad for what their daughter had to go through, disappointed because they weren't there to protect her, and angry because they can't believe such prejudice and discrimination is present to the world they let their daughter be exposed in. They also realized that they didn't know their daughter at all anymore.
When they decided to send Hermione to Hogwarts, they didn't realize that their lives would be so different from one another. They thought it would be as easy as sending her to a normal boarding school. But now, hearing what their daughter was capable of doing, they realized how alien they must be to their daughter now. It didn't matter if she lived in the muggle world for eleven years. They knew her daughter and her love of learning. She might have come home to them after every school year, but now they knew they were just a pit stop. Her body was in the muggle world, but her mind and heart was in the wizarding world.
Of course they know Hermione loves them too, but was love enough?
"Mum, Dad," Hermione started again after going silent for a couple of minutes. "Harry needs me."
Jean started crying, and Dan wrapped his arms around his wife to console her. "This is unfair!" Jean roared. Hermione flinched and Dan just kept quiet. "This is not what we signed up for, Hermione. We thought Hogwarts—the wizarding world—would be good for you! Look at where you are now!"
Hermione took a deep, ragged breath. "Mum, I—,"
"How can we help?" Dan interrupted.
"Help?" Hermione asked. "You can't!"
"Hermione, you're seventeen years old, and you're talking about going to a war!" Dan bellowed. "Seventeen year olds like you should be in school, doing normal things teenagers do! This is your life we're talking about!"
"But we'll be saving everyone! My life is not important!"
"It is for us!" Jean shouted through her tears.
"Your life is not important?" Dan asked, completely appalled to what Hermione just said. "That's not what parents want to hear from their children."
"This is bigger than my life. The wizarding world needs Harry, and Harry needs me and Ron. Harry's in a much worse position than I am right now. If I have to give my life for him, I will!"
The three stared at each other for a long time. It was a silent war between Hermione and her parents and no one was backing down. Jean wasn't crying anymore, but there were still tear stains on her face. Dan on the other hand looked deeply hurt at what was happening at the moment.
"What do you want us to do?" Dan asked.
"Leave," Hermione replied.
"Where?" Jean asked this time.
"Australia."
"When?"
"Immediately," Hermione replied in a tone they couldn't place.
"How about the practice?"
Hermione stood up and walked over to her parents. She bent down to hug them tightly, and started sobbing. Jean and Dan looked at one another over Hermione's shoulders. It was the first they have seen their daughter in such state. They've seen her cry before, but not as uncontrollable as this. Something was about to happen, and they could feel it. Their hearts began to feel heavy as they wait for their daughter to calm down.
After a couple of minutes, Hermione gained control over her emotions again. She let go of her parents and took a few steps back.
"I'm sorry," Hermione muttered.
"Why? Wha—," Dan was about to ask his daughter, when she plucked her wand from her pants' back pocket and point it at them. Dan and Jean's went wide as Hermione perform the full body bind spell at them. When it was done, Hermione dropped to the floor and started sobbing again while muttering I'm sorry over and over.
All Dan and Jean could do was stay still, and look at their daughter. Their hearts were pounding, as they struggle. They could not believe what their daughter just did. They felt helpless, and scared.
"I'm so sorry," Hermione started. "I know you would try to tell me going to Australia is a bad idea, and that you won't leave. Plan A was not to convince you. Plan A is to force you to.
"The things is, you're both a part of this now, whether you like it or not. You're both in danger because of me. Harry, Ron and I will be in hiding and the Death Eaters will try their hardest to find us. That means, they'll trace the people we love and use you against us. I can't let them do that to you. I can't let them kill you."
Dan and Jean's faces became paler. Hermione started pacing, running her hand through her bushy hair. "The Death Eaters are ruthless. They won't just kill you. They know a lot of dark magic, and they're all good at torture spells. Do you think they'll believe you if you tell them you don't know where I am? They'll use everything they know on you, until you break or you die.
"I'm ahead of them, though," Hermione chuckled darkly. "I've thought of something to keep you safe and alive."
By this time, Dan and Jean stopped trying to move and was hanging on to every word their daughter was saying. "You're going to Australia," Hermione said slowly. "And I'm erasing your memories."
Dan's eyes went wide, and Jean's started to tear up again. Hermione's face was void of emotion, but her eyes were filled of determination. Hermione was doing it, and they couldn't do anything about it.
"You'll forget about your life here, and you'll forget about me. This is the only way. I researched about memory spells, of course, so I'm fully confident I will be able to do this."
Hermione pointed her wand towards her parents again. She wiped a tear from her face, trying not to cry again. "I fixed everything," she said. "I had fake passports made for you. The practice and the house will be sold by your new identities, and all the things that are related to me will vanish."
Dan and Jean were trying to struggle again, screaming in their heads, praying that their daughter won't go through her plan. But it was too late.
Before they could do anything, Hermione muttered "Obliviate" and everything went black.
