CHAPTER FIVE
Amy held tightly onto Sabrina's hand as they walked down the street, with Sabrina resting her head against her shoulder. It felt good. Comfortable. The last few weeks, since they'd committed to being a couple properly again, had been good. The only problem was that she missed Karma.
As if the thought brought her into being, Amy saw Karma coming towards her…in the company of the last person she expected.
"Who's that with Karma?"Sabrina wondered.
Amy swallowed hard. "My ex."
Karma and Reagan both waved as they approached. Amy noted with some confusion that the pair were holding hands. "Hi, Amy,"Reagan greeted her.
"Hi,"Amy responded, unable to stop herself sounding shocked.
Karma was grinning broadly. "Sabrina, you haven't met my girlfriend Reagan, have you?"
Amy found herself unable to make a coherent sound, so it was a good job Sabrina did it for her. "I thought you were straight."
Karma continued smiling and patted Reagan's arm affectionately. "So did I, but turns out I like the girl-on-girl more than I thought." She looked pointedly at Amy.
"We should get on,"Reagan suggested.
"Er, yes, see you soon,"Amy managed as the other two girls walked past them.
"That's good for Karma?"Sabrina attempted as they walked on.
Amy nodded. "It's good to see her happy."
Lauren thought she'd had a fair grasp of what her life was like and what she did. She went shopping, she gave orders to her minions, she tried desperately to raise her profile, she tried to work out what the rules were at the bizarro school that had somehow become her home, she hung out with Amy and exchanged frenemy banter with her.
She did not spend afternoons in bed with Liam Booker.
"You all right there?"Liam asked as she snuggled up to him.
"I guess I owe you an apology,"Lauren admitted. "For all that STI stuff. It's just it was new to me and I let Amy wind me up…I'm sorry."
"Well…turns out you were right,"Liam confessed.
Lauren pulled herself away from him slightly, fixing him with a severe glare. "What do you mean? Have you got something? Have you given me something?"
"No, no,"Liam assured her. "All the tests came back negative. I went to that clinic after I found out you went there and it turns out that if you have multiple partners, they recommend getting tested every few months just in case."
"Right."Lauren relaxed slightly. "Did they have any other recommendations?"
Liam lowered his voice to a stage whisper and spoke to her confidentiality. "Well…turns out one solution is to only have one partner." He ran his fingers through her hair. "I love you,"he said.
Lauren smiled and kissed him, moving on top of him as she did so.
"What are you doing?"Liam asked, even though he probably had a good idea.
Lauren smiled at him. "Showing that I love you too."
Amy wanted to enjoy her new relationship with Sabrina. And for the most part she did. But there were times like now, when they were in the coffee bar and Karma and Reagan were at a nearby table, acting disgustingly coupley, that she found it hard.
"You want to check out a movie on Friday?"Sabrina asked. "It'll be our last chance before we're back at school."
"Sounds good,"Amy agreed, although her attention still wasn't entirely on the conversation. She noticed Shane at the counter with Noah and took it as an excuse to get out of the conversation. "I'll be back in a minute."
"Seen the latest development in our ever-confusing love hexagon?"Shane asked her as she joined him, nodding over to Karma and Reagan.
"Yeah, I found out a few days ago,"Amy admitted.
"I didn't know Karma was gay,"Noah remarked.
"She isn't,"Amy insisted. "She's just been acting crazy ever since we slept together."
Shane's mouth dropped open. "You and Karma slept together? How am I only just hearing about this now? That's the home run! Maybe even the whole World Series!"
"No, it's not,"Amy insisted. "Because I'm seeing Sabrina and Karma's straight."
Shane mulled this over. "Slept with you, dating Reagan…Yeah, that doesn't sound like very straight behaviour to me."
Noah looked at Amy in a pointed manner. "Weren't you the one that was against labels?"
The most frustrating thing was that they were both making good points but Amy didn't want to hear them. "I've had enough of this,"she decided. "Can you tell Sabrina I'll call her later?"
She headed out into the foyer but a moment later she heard a call behind her. "Amy, wait!"
Amy really wanted to just walk on but politeness caused her to stop and turn round. "What do you want, Karma?"
Karma paused, as though she hadn't quite worked out where to go after this. "I don't want to upset you,"she said at last.
Amy gave a hollow laugh. "Why should I be upset? You spend a year telling me you don't want me because you like boys and then you hook right up with my ex-girlfriend."
"I do want you,"Karma insisted. "I've told you that. You're the one that's not letting this happen."
Amy tried to think of a response to that but logic was failing her. "I…I'm just doing what you really want."
"Tell me that night we spent together wasn't the best night of your life."
"It…it was,"Amy admitted.
Karma moved closer to her, looking at her seriously. "No-one has ever made me feel the way you do, Amy. Not Liam, not Reagan, not Felix…It's you, okay?"
And then she kissed her and Amy had no option but to kiss her back, their hands roaming about each other. The kiss broke and Karma took Amy's hand and led her into a nearby restroom.
Amy and Karma stood in a cubicle, pulling their clothing back into place. They leaned on the cubicle walls, not quite facing each other. "Well, that was unexpected but welcome,"Karma remarked. She noticed the look on Amy's face. "You're not going weird on me again, are you?"
"What do you expect?"Amy asked. "I just had sex with you while my girlfriend's just the other side of that wall."
"Doesn't that tell you something?"Karma attempted.
"Yes, it tells me I'm a horrible person that doesn't deserve her. And it tells me that I can't keep on doing this."
Karma could see this was slipping away from her. "Amy, wait, don't…"
Amy shook her head firmly. "I can't keep doing this. I still want to be your friend but…for now, I think we should stay away from each other."
"That's a bit difficult when we live in the same house,"Karma pointed out.
"Well…we can try." Amy left the cubicle and gave herself a quick wash, before heading out into the foyer, just as Sabrina came through from the other direction.
"Hi!"Sabrina greeted her in surprise. "I thought you'd gone."
"I was going to but I guess sometimes you just have to go." Amy took Sabrina's hand. "Come on, let's go back to mine."
