There was dead silence in the room for one long second and then Serena felt Nate uncurl his arms from her waist and she saw him rush across the room to Blair.
"Where's your hospital bag?" he asked, going to stand next to her.
"Here Mr Nate," Dorota said speed walking down the stairs with the bag in her hands.
"Ok, I'm going to get a taxi, Serena, you and Dorota make sure there isn't anything we're missing and bring Blair downstairs, I'll try and get ahold of Chuck," Nate said pressing the button for the elevator and disappearing with Blair's bag in his hand.
"Since when is he good in a crisis?" Blair asked and Serena shrugged looking toward the elevator. "Ok the bag is all I need, Dorota bring me my phone, let's go, I've got a baby to get out."
"So the pain this morning was a contraction, wasn't it?" Serena asked reaching out to take Blair's hand.
"I didn't want to worry you," Blair said shaking her head and Serena frowned. "Relax, this isn't my first time, they were far enough apart for me not to even notice."
"Well it has been 5 years," Serena commented and Blair glared causing Serena to smile. "When did you start worrying?"
"5 minutes ago when my water broke," Bair smirked and Serena winced, she was standing next to Blair when her water broke for Henry and both of them almost fainted, thank God Dorota was there to calm them down and tell them what to do. "Hurry, hurry people, I don't have all day," Blair said when she saw how slow and careful Serena and Dorota were attempting to be.
Serena, Blair and Dorota reached the lobby and found Nate on his phone, which he put away as soon as he saw them.
"Was that Chuck?" Blair asked hopefully.
"Yeah, yeah he's on his way, it won't take him longer than a few hours," Nate said and Blair raised an eyebrow clearly not believing him. "Maybe you can try and make the baby wait."
"Make the baby wait?" Blair almost screamed. "Do you want to keep your pretty blond head?"
"Got it, no waiting," Nate said rubbing the back of his neck. "It was just a thought."
"The contractions are far enough apart that maybe I will be waiting a few hours so lucky Chuck," Blair said irritatedly. "This kid better not be late to anything once he's born, he's late enough in the womb."
"Urm the taxi is waiting for us, your bag is already inside," Nate said a little uncomfortably not really sure what else to say to Blair, pointing to the driver holding the door open for them.
"Good, Dorota lets go," Blair said grasping the older woman's hand as she walked to the car.
"Wait, someone needs to be here to let Henry know what's going on," Serena said remembering her Godson and Nate nodded.
"You stay and keep trying Chuck," Nate said with a sense of urgency in his voice.
"I thought you said-"
"I know but I didn't want to worry Blair anymore," Nate whispered and then looked over to the taxi. "I'm going with her, bring Henry to the hospital when he gets back."
"Ok," Serena said, in a little bit of a daze. "I will."
"I'll call you as soon as she's settled," Nate said kissing her head quickly and Serena nodded watching him get into the car as well, it was only when they drove away did she realise that she's been waiting for him to kiss her properly since he told her all those sweet things earlier and it still hasn't happened, it's not like she's been waiting long but all this activity made it seem like such a long time since they spoke.
Serena snapped out of her daydream quickly when she remembered she had to try and get ahold of Chuck, pulling her phone out she tried her brothers number as she made her way back to his apartment and frowned when she got his voicemail. She tried a few more times with no luck when she finally decided to call one of his partners to locate him, this was going to be a very long day.
Henry bounded into the room and straight into her arms about an hour after Nate and Blair left, and started giving her a minute by minute explanation of what happened with his friends. Gale took his things to his room and then disappeared into the kitchen while Serena tried to get the little boy to stop for a minute and let her tell him where his mom was.
"Is momma still sleeping?" Henry asked looking around for any sign of his mother.
"No sweetie that's what I was trying to tell you and you wouldn't stop talking," Serena said poking his nose and he giggled. "Uncle Nate took your mom to the hospital because she's having the baby."
"Really?" Henry asked with wide eyes. "Is daddy here?"
"Not yet but I have no doubt he will be soon," Serena said smiling at her Godson. "I'm going to go to the hospital to see your mom, do you want to come with me?"
"Yes please," he said nodding quickly. "Are we going to be long?"
"I think we might be there a while," Serena confessed and Henry frowned a little. "Do you want to take something with you?"
"Yeah, wait for me," Henry said as he took off for the stairs.
"I'm waiting," Serena called after him and went to find Gale to let her know that she was taking Henry with her and that if Chuck were to come here that she should tell him where they are. With the amount of messages she and Nate left him though she was sure he'd know exactly where to go.
"Aunty S," Henry called and Serena went to meet him at the stairs.
"Is mommy going to be ok?" he asked holding his arms up, indicating that he wanted her to carry him. For the most part Henry wasn't a clingy child, he was happy being left to play by himself or walk alongside them without being carried but sometimes when he was feeling sick or vulnerable his feet weren't allowed to touch the ground, no-one minded but it always worried Serena that if he was with her, she wouldn't be able to make the little boy feel better.
"Yes, she's going to be perfectly fine," Serena said hauling him into her arms and kissing his cheek. "Come on lets go and I'll show you how ok she is."
Serena and Henry got to the hospital and made their way to the room Nate told her to go to.
"Momma," Henry called climbing onto the bed and wrapping his little arms around his mother.
"Hey baby," she said pressing a kiss to his head. "How was your day?"
Henry started telling Blair all about his day and Nate gently took Serena's hand and pulled her out of the room, leaving them together.
"Where's Dorota?" Serena asked looking around, she didn't see her in the room either.
"She's getting ice chips for Blair," Nate said stepping closer and wrapping his arms around her again. "I don't want to talk about them though, I kinda want your opinion on what was going to happen before Blair interrupted us."
"My opinion huh?" Serena asked biting her lip.
"Well yeah, I want to know that I didn't make a complete ass of myself twice this year," Nate said and Serena laughed and shook her head. "Although you did catch me off-guard at my office the other day."
Serena blushed and hit his chest, "It's been an emotional year," Serena said burying her head in the crook of his shoulder.
"So ... about earlier?" Nate asked and Serena leaned up and kissed him, pulling him close and showing him exactly what she thought about it. "Wow."
"My thoughts exactly," Serena said giggling as Nate swooped in to kiss her again.
They were so busy enjoying the moment that they almost didn't hear Blair let out a yelp of pain as another contraction hit her. Serena and Nate rushed in to find Henry getting upset and Blair trying her hardest not to let him know that she was in pain.
"Where is Chuck?" Blair gritted out as Nate picked up the child and took him out of the room before anyone else said anything else but not before Blair hears him start to cry and that sets of the waterworks for her as well. "I didn't mean to scare him."
"He'll be ok, once he sees that you are ok," Serena said taking hold of her best friends hand and Blair sighed.
"Mrs Bass," one of the nurses said. "It's almost time, are you ready?"
"No," Blair sobs. "Where is my husband?"
"Here, here, here," Chuck's panicked voice floats to them and suddenly he's at Blair's side grasping her hand and Serena happily kisses her best friends hand and lets her go to find Nate and Henry.
It's not too much later when Serena and Nate finally manage to calm Henry down, the couple buy a pack of cards and start teaching him how to play these ridiculous games, both ones they learnt as kids and ones they made up. Henry is laughing when his dad finally finds them and lets them know that both Blair and the baby are fine and he made it back in time.
Henry is in his arms before he can finish speaking and Chuck just motions for them to follow him as he assures his son everything is perfectly fine.
Blair is holding on to the latest baby Bass when they enter the room, smiling at them. "S, Nate," she say giddily. "Say hello to your second Godson, Sebastian Erik Bass."
"Oh Erik is going to be thrilled," Lily says as she rushes in to see her grandson and take him from Blair, Elenor and Harold not far behind her. "Look at him."
"Everything's fine with him?" Serena asks looking to Blair who now has Henry laying next to her again.
"Aside from him driving mommy crazy for an extra 10 days, yes, everything's perfect with him," she says beaming. "So perfect in fact, that I can go home today."
"Chuck, you had us worried there for a moment," Nate said leaning against the chair Serena was sitting on and smirking at his friend.
"I thought I might surprise everyone and come home a day early," Chuck said laughing. "Imagine my surprise when Gale kicked me out the moment the doors opened."
"You cut it really close but you made it," Blair told him decisively and Chuck let out a breath of relief, leaning down to kiss her. "Henry, we are going be a while longer here, do you want to go home with Aunty S and Uncle Nate?"
"No, I wanna stay with you," Henry said and Chuck raised an eyebrow because Henry always wanted to go with his Godparents.
"Blair's contractions might have gotten scary," Serena said as a way of explanation and Chuck cringed and nodded in understanding. "We'll leave you to rest, see you tomorrow."
"I'll walk out with you," Lily said handing the baby to Elenor, letting Serena make a few funny faces and talk to the newborn in her baby voice before the 3 of them left the room.
"Where's dad?" Serena asked hooking an arm through Nate's as they walked down the stairs.
"He and Erik have decided to have some father son bonding time," Lily said with a laugh. "23 years later, who would have guessed."
"Seems like a running theme," Serena said quietly nudging Nate who grinned down at her. "Well, I'm just happy they are finally making some kind of progress, Erik's waited this long."
"Hmm," Lily said in agreement, eyeing them suspiciously but not saying anything. "I'll see you tomorrow darling."
"Do you want to get a cab, or should we walk," Nate asked once Lily's taxi was out of sight.
"Let's walk," Serena said tugging Nate's arm so it would wrap around her and he pulled her close. "I feel like we still have so much to talk about, but I don't know where to start."
"Really? After the last couple of months I thought we were all talked out," Nate said pressing his nose against the side of her head and breathing her in.
"I know but it hasn't been that long since me divorce so I just need to know if you're ok with dating someone with that much baggage," Serena said softly and Nate burst out laughing. "Ok, that isn't helping."
"S, you're saying it like I just met you, like I don't know what's happened to you," he told her keeping her in place when she tried to move out of his arms. "Are you trying to get out of this?"
"What is this?" Serena asked glancing up at him.
"Being my girlfriend," he said grinning and she blushed.
"That word sounds so foreign," she said giggling. "No, I don't want to get out of being your girlfriend."
"We need to be sure Natie," she said. "I don't want what happened with him to happen with us."
"It won't," he said simply and she looked at him surprised at the conviction in his words, she expected him to flinch at the mention of her previous relationship but he was as at ease with it as she was, she didn't expect that to happen so soon. "Don't look so shocked, I know we'll make it."
"How can you be so sure?" she asked biting her lip, she'd been sure before and look at where that led her, married and divorced, realizing she's in love with a childhood friend, realizing said friend has been in love with her all this time and making peace with her ex-husband, all just during Blair's pregnancy.
"Because you're you and I'm me," Nate said looking at her as if it made all the sense in the world.
"And we're mythic," Serena almost whispered, repeating the words Blair told her early that morning when neither of them could sleep, Nate raised his eyebrow at her wording but nodded.
"That's one way to put it," he said as they reached his building.
"Its Blair's way," Serena said giggling.
"We always knew she was the smart one," Nate said laughing with her and leading her to his apartment. "Do you still want to talk?"
"Suddenly I'm not feeling all that talkative," she replied her coat already on the floor and his half way there when she kissed him.
"Where did you get the name Sebastian?" Serena asked making faces at the newborn baby in her arms, Henry giggled at her from his spot on Nate's lap, his fear of letting Blair out of his sight gone for the moment.
"It's just a nice name," Blair said. "I looked at him and he looked like a Sebastian, don't you think?"
"He still looks like an alien," Nate commented and Henry snickered while Blair and Serena glared at him.
"Actually I think you got the name from one of Henry's story books," Chuck said and Blair frowned not remembering a story with her new baby's name.
"I think it suits him, 'Sebastian Erik Bass'," Serena said testing the name out and watching as the baby let out a yawn and stretched himself. "I think he likes it when we say his name."
"Uncle Nate, are you and Aunty S dating now?" Henry asked smiling widely at his uncle and fidgeting like he couldn't hold back the question any longer. "Are you going to get married?"
"Henry, you can't just ask the question like that," Blair admonished lightly but then turned to the blonds and raised an eyebrow. "But you might as well answer the boy."
"We are dating," Serena told her godson before glancing to Nate. "No wedding plans ... yet."
"Yes I knew it," Henry said ginning and his parents and godparents looked at him.
"Honey how did you know Uncle Nate and Aunty Serena were dating again?" Blair asked her son curiously.
"I'm Henry Bass," the little boy shrugged, shrieking when he was picked up and thrown in the air by his beaming father while his mother looked on completely taken off guard.
"Did you teach him that?" she asked in a very high pitched voice.
"No," Chuck said smiling at his giggling son. "That's just my boy."
"I have a question," Serena said laughing at Blair and Chucks reactions and just thinking about something. "Henry, did you have a plan to get us back together?"
"Momma said you wouldn't be happy if you and Uncle Nate weren't together and you would need a push," Henry said nodding. "And then daddy said that the only way was to make you spend time together but he wasn't getting involved she shouldn't either."
"Oh now I get why you were worried about him eavesdropping," Blair said suddenly turning to Nate who let out a squeak of shock.
"Of course the two of you would create the sneakiest 5 year old schemer," Nate said staring at his Godson like all the other adults and Henry smiled sheepishly and gave him a shrug. "The world doesn't stand a chance when he's 15."
"Oh don't be so overdramatic," Blair said rolling her eyes and smiling, looking up at her ingenious little boy who managed to push the stubborn blonds together all by listening to his parents 'grown up' talks about them. "I've created a genius."
A/N : Ok so with that comes the end of 'State of Grace', its been a long an emotional ride to get to this point but we made it yey, somewhere in the middle I was kinda worried that I would take years to get to the end of this story but inspiration comes and goes as it pleases
When I first started this story I had parts of this chapter written and most of them I deleted but the line that Henry says at the end "i'm Henry Bass" that I knew had to be in here coz OMG that kid is the cutest little boy and he had to use Chucks line I mean how amazing would this have been in the show? How cute are Nate and Serena in this chapter? I mean after all the crazyness that I put them through in this story, the scares and silly love confrontations which I know were really random but like I said before inspiration is silly sometimes
So this story wasn't all NS and that's why I added Chuck and Blair in as the other character couple, they played such a huge role in this story so I figure why not
This is the end of State of Grace but I do have a one shot sequel that I'm half way through writing, I'm not going to promise the story to you anytime soon because exams are coming up and those really suck and I'm really nervous about these ones
I also have a few other ideas for a new NS story but I'm not sure how that's going to go, when I figure out if the plot works you guys will be the first to know especially since Charmed and OTH and Glee have also been inspiring me lately and the ideas sound fun in my head but I have no idea if writing them out will go so well
So anyway thank you to everyone who reviewed and favorited and followed and just read this post finale story and went on this journey with me, thank you for giving me your input and helping me out when I was lost with this story
Please review and let me know what you think and I hope to talk to you guys soon with the sequel
Until next time (^^,)
