Chapter 11 – Risky business
"Oh my god!" both screamed Haley and Lucas when they acknowledged the situation. Haley was in shock when she realized what might have happened that night. She was upset and heartbroken so she drunk her pain away but sleeping with Lucas was definitely not the solution to her problem, on the contrary. If Brooke discovered what had happened between them she would never talked to her again and this freaked her out even more because she had already lost Nathan she was not ready to lose Brooke too.
Lucas on the other hand, who took some time to calmly assess the situation was actually amused to see Haley in such a state. She seemed like a calm, down to earth girl, he never thought he would actually see her like that ever. A smirk was slowing appearing on Lucas' face and this smirk turned into a small laugh when he saw Jensen coming out of the bathroom.
"Lucas, hey" said Jensen clearly not surprised to see his best friend in his bedroom. They used to barged into each others room practically all the time, it was nothing unusual. When Haley saw Jensen come out of the bathroom, it hit her. She had not spend the night with Lucas, she spent the night with Jensen. Her memory was a bit blurry but she did remember a blond guy hitting on her in the bar last night and he definitely looked more like Jensen than Lucas. She should have felt relieved to know that she did not betrayed her best friend but she did not. She felt ashamed for spending the night with a complete stranger and she felt even worse knowing that Lucas was in the front raw to witness it. She wanted to run away as far as possible from them but when she thought of standing up to pick up her clothes she realized she was completely naked under those sheets. And even though Jensen had seen more than what he needed to see yesterday, she did not want to expose herself again especially when Lucas was in the room, staring at her with an amused look.
"I should go..."started Haley shyly, hoping they would understand her hidden message and leave her alone to collect her clothes.
"We'll let you get dressed..." said Lucas glancing at Jensen who did not seem willing to leave the room.
"Please, it's nothing I haven't seen" said Jensen not understanding why Haley was making such a big deal out of it.
"Come on...we should go" insisted Lucas. If he thought the situation was really amusing he did not want Haley to feel more uncomfortable that she already did, so he politely left the room and Jensen followed.
"So...you slept with Haley" said Lucas, when the two guys finally got into the living room.
"Who ?" asked Jensen clearly having no clue of who Lucas was talking about.
"Haley...the girl in your bedroom..."
"Oh...that's her name..." replied Jensen finally putting everything back together, he usually did not took time to remember the name of the girl he was sleeping with and since he knew for sure that he would not sleep with Haley again, why bother. "How do you know her name ?" asked Jensen intrigued, Lucas usually had the same policy than he did regarding their one night stand. "Did you guys bonded already"
"She's Brooke's friend"
"Hum...Brooke...So you're still into that girl". Brooke had rejected him couple of time already, he figured that Lucas was already over her and until the next girl, a girl docile enough for him to use her as an "official" girlfriend, but apparently he was not. It seemed like Lucas was clearly into this girl and that worried him because he had not seen Lucas be into a girl like this since Peyton, and it ended pretty badly, he certainly did not want his best friend to go through that path again.
"I am...and we're going on a date tonight" said Lucas smiling.
"So that's why you've been having this stupid look on your face, and here I though you were just happy to see me" said Jensen joking. Just thinking about Brooke made Lucas happy and Jensen had noticed it, he was glad that his friend felt like this because things have been pretty intense for him lately. He deserved to be happy but he wanted him to be careful too.
"So, you're going to tap that tonight uh" asked Jensen. He knew that if Lucas managed to have sex with Brooke tonight she will be addicted to him and will not be able to leave, they had that effect on girl.
"No, I want to take things slowly this time, make things right". Yeah, that was obvious now, Lucas was clearly falling for Brooke.
"Just be careful, ok" simply said Jensen. But before Lucas had time to answer, Haley appeared in the living room, fully dressed this time.
"Well, I think I'm gonna go" said Haley carefully avoding Lucas and Jensen's looks and heading to the exit. But she stopped before opening the door, took a deep breath and turned around. "Please don't say anything to Brooke"
"I won't" nodded Lucas "I promise"
"Thank you" whispered Haley before leaving.
"She thanked you but not me ?" asked Jensen dumbfounded "I'm probably the best fuck she'll ever had and she did not even thanked me ?" added Jensen clearly upset by Haley lack of politeness. Lucas just looked at him and burst into laugh.
Despite her massive headache Haley managed to find strength to go to work. She did stop to her house first to get a quick shower and a heavy dose of coffee. When she finally got home after a very long day of work, Haley was not surprised to see Nathan at her house.
"Hey" said Nathan greeting her
"Hey" simply replied Haley. She knew she was going to find him home but she did not have the strength to face him today, especially since she knew what he was going to tell her. And despite the fact that she wanted to act like the good supporting friend, she was not in the mood for that at the moment, she needed time, to process everything. To deal with the fact that Nathan, the love of her life who also happened to be one of his best friend was in love with her other best friend, and that they were probably together now, or he would not be here.
"I need some sleep" said Haley heading to her room.
"Wait...Are you ok ?" asked Nathan clearly concerned. When him and Brooke got back to the house the night before they did not see her and at the face she had right now she probably did not have a good time. "Did something happened last night?"
"Yeah, you broke my heart last night!" thought Haley but she could not tell him, she could never tell him and that made her sick. So instead of telling him the truth, she pretended that everything was okay, she happened to be good at this after practicing for years.
"No...nothing happened I'm just tired" simply replied Haley before heading to her room but she was once again interrupted.
"Oh finally here you are!" said Brooke bursting out of her room. "I need advice...Which dress should I wear for my date tonight" asked Brooke showing her two gorgeous dresses. Haley looked at Nathan interrogatively. She thought the date with Lucas was off and that Nathan and Brooke were together now. "I'm going to try them on and you'll tell me which one you prefer" said Brooke running back to her room but abruptly stopped and turned around "You're okay Haley ?"
"Yeah, I'm fine just tired" reassured Haley before turning her attention back to Nathan when Brooke left.
"Aren't you and Brooke..." asked Haley reluctantly.
"No...I did not tell her" simply answered Nathan. He wanted to tell Brooke so bad but when he saw how she was talking about Lucas, he knew that even if he said something it would change nothing, she would still have feelings for Lucas and how hard as it was for him to admit it, he knew it was the best thing to do. "She's falling for him and there's nothing I can do about it".
"I'm sorry" said Haley. A small part of her was sorry because she hated seeing Nathan hurt, but the other part of her, the major part of her was bursting with happiness right now. Nathan knew that nothing would ever happen between him and Brooke, so maybe there still was a chance for her and him.
"Oh my God! He's already here" said Brooke panicked after hearing the door bell, she had not pick the dress she was going to wear yet.
"You take care of Brooke and I'll take care of him" offered Nathan
"Are you sure ?" asked Haley, it was definitely not the moment for Nathan and Lucas to be alone, but on the other side, after what had happened this morning, she did not want to be alone with Lucas either. "We'll do that!" said Haley running to Brooke's room.
Nathan took a deep breath and head to the door. Lucas was definitely the last person he wanted to see at the moment but he promised Brooke he would make an effort, so this is what he was going to do.
"Hey" said coldly Nathan after opening the door. Lucas was clearly surprised to see him here but figured that since he was here it was maybe time for them to settle everything down, have a fresh start.
"Hey" replied Lucas but was interrupted by Nathan.
"Look, I don't know what you did or said to Brooke but she wants to be with you. And even if I'm fiercely opposed to that it seems like there's nothing I can do about it. But let me tell you what I can do...Fucking kill you if you ever hurt her! I let things go with Anna but I'm definitely not letting things go with Brooke"
"So much for a fresh start uh" said Lucas more to himself than to Nathan "I have no intention to hurt her, I care about her". Nathan was about to reply but Brooke got out of her room.
"Hey!' said Brooke greeting Lucas and heading to his direction. "No fight this time, you guys did good". Brooke was trying to ease the atmosphere but it was clearly not working, Nathan was glaring at Lucas and Lucas was glaring back at him. She was not upset though, she could tell Nathan was trying, it might just take some time, that's all. "We should go" added Brooke grabbing her bag.
"Yeah we should" finally said Lucas before saying goodbye to Brooke's friends. When Lucas and Brooke were finally out of her house, he realized that he had forgot to give her something.
" got you flowers" said Lucas handing her a beautiful bouquet of red roses.
"Thanks, they are beautiful" said Brooke taking the bouquet and smelling it "And they smell very good, thanks again"
"My pleasure..." replied Lucas smiling back at her. This date seemed promising.
While Brooke and Lucas were heading to Lucas' car, Nathan glanced at them from the window. As sick as it was making him, Brooke actually seemed really happy with Lucas.
"Are you okay ?" asked Haley from behind him. Despite how hard it was trying to hide it, Haley could actually see that he was hurt.
"I think I need a drink" simply replied Nathan heading out.
While Nathan was heading to a bar to drink his pain away, Brooke and Lucas' date was going strong.
"Here we are" said Lucas turning the contact off. Brooke looked at him with an interrogative look, this could not possibly be the place where they were suppose to have a date, there was nothing there.
"You're sure you have the right address" asked Brooke hoping this was a joke.
"Yes I'm sure...Let's get out of the car" said Lucas heading out to open Brooke's door. "You're coming ?' asked Lucas, offering his hand.
"Hum...I'm not sure...This place looks creepy" Lucas smiled, she was not afraid to speak her mind and he loved it.
"Do you trust me ?" asked Lucas. Brooke was surprise by Lucas' question, they have not been even dating yet and he was already asking her if she trusted him. But after some thought, she realized that she actually did. Despite all the nasty things he had done in the past, she believed that he wanted to change and be a better person. She did trust him and this was kind of unexpected for Brooke because she was not the type of woman who trusted a guy easily, especially after the many deception she had. But, with Lucas it seemed different. So without hesitating any longer she took her hand and followed him. The place did look creepy, it was really dark on the back of an alley. They climbed some stairs to get to the back of an old building and then Lucas knocked on the door.
"Mr Scott!" said the man who opened the door. He had an italian accent and was dressed like a chef.
"This is Brooke Davis, Brooke this Paolo, one of the finest chef in the city!" introduced Lucas.
"Nice to meet you" politely said Brooke, shaking Paolo's hand.
"The pleasure is all mine...Now I know why Mr Scott wanted everything to be perfect, you clearly deserve it" Brooke looked at Lucas who gave him a shy smile. "Please..." finally said Paolo, letting the young couple come in. When Brooke saw the place she was agreeably surprised. There were candles everywhere with at least 50 bouquets of roses and petals on the floor. This was incredibly romantic, nobody had ever done anything like this for her.
"You did this ?' asked Brooke astonished.
"I had some help...lots of help" admitted Lucas "But it was my idea...I just wanted something intimate without all the paparazzi and the people staring, but I mean if you prefer to eat downstairs..."
"No it's perfect!" simply replied Brooke with a wide smile. She did not want to change anything of this moment, it was perfect.
Nathan had only spent an hour to a bar but he was already drunk like hell, fortunately for him, Haley was there to keep an eye on him.
"Nathan I think it's time to go home" calmly said Haley. She had not drink a thing, she was the designated driver plus after the crazy night she had she figured being sober for a while was definitely the best thing to do.
"But I don't want to go home...I want to drink...I need to drink...It eases the pain away" said Nathan emptying his glass before asking a refill to the bartender.
"Look, I know how bad you're feeling right now but drinking his definitely the best thing to do, you'll regret it tomorrow morning". Haley knew exactly what she was talking about, she was suffering as much as he was because of the feelings she had for him, and she knew for a fact that sleeping with a complete stranger was not the solution.
"What am I suppose to do ?" asked Nathan apologetically. He felt like hell and the massive dose of alcohol he had on his blood deepened his feelings in the worst way possible.
"Just give it some time, you'll get over it". Haley knew it was a lie, you never get over someone you love especially when this person is Brooke Davis. "Come on, let me take you home" insisted Haley. After resisting for a while, he finally gave up and let Haley take him home.
While Haley and Nathan's night was getting worse and worse, Lucas and Brooke's night was getting better and better. They shared a lot of laugh, smile, flirted with each others, shared embarrassing stories. It was everything Brooke had expecting and with every minute she was spending with him she was falling more and more for him.
"You're staring" said Lucas smiling. Brooke had been fixing him for the past few minutes and she did not even noticed it. She was lost in her minds, lost thinking of Lucas and how amazing he turned out to be. "Not that I'm complaining..." pursued Lucas. He loved staring at her too. She was so refreshing and different from the other girls he had been with, even different than Peyton, and he loved it. "Penny for your thought ?" then asked Lucas.
"I'm just wondering...who are you ?" asked Brooke honestly. After what Nathan had said of him and how he had been acting during her date, she was honestly confused but she was not able to figure out clearly who he was and it frightened her a little in a good and bad way...supposing there is a good way to be frightened. To be honest, she felt lost and confused and she needed help to put everything in order.
"It's a tough question" honestly replied Lucas. Nobody had ever asked him this question, not that way anyway, and at that moment, he felt like everything that they will try to build in the future will depend on that simple question: "Who is Lucas Scott ?". Usually, he lied. Because lying was a way for him to avoid piercing the wall he took so much time to build, it was a way to protect himself and be what people expected him to be. But he did not want to lie this time, he did not want to lie to Brooke. He felt like he could be honest with her and she would not hold it against him.
"Well..." started Lucas taking a deep breath. "From what I've heard, I'm a selfish self-centered asshole" This had the merit to be clear and honest thought Brooke. "But the truth is...I don't know who I am". Finally said Lucas. He had spent a lifetime searching for who he was and felt like he had not find himself yet, this was probably the reason why the few relationship he had never worked. He did think for a moment that he knew who he was and what he wanted when he was with Peyton but the way their relationship ended made him realize that he did not know anything about him at all. "Look, despite all the shit I have done and all the incertitude in my life, I know one thing. I like you, I like you a lot and I want to make things work between us. I can't promise you that I'll be the perfect boyfriend, because I can promise you to try. I promise to put the same effort I put into every single game I play to make this relationship work". The last time Lucas has been this honest and open with a woman was with Peyton. This was a huge step for him and he hoped that Brooke would see it.
When Brooke was rethinking everything she thought she knew about Lucas, Haley and Nathan finally made it home. Haley had decided to bring Nathan to his house before heading back to her place, but it seemed like he was not willing to let her go just yet.
"Please...stay with me..." asked Nathan after Haley had finally put him to bed.
"I think it's better that I go, you need to rest..."
"I don't need to rest...I need you..." replied Nathan grabbing Haley's arm before making him fall on top of her. Haley was breathing heavely. She had not been this close to him in ages and the only thing she was thinking about in that very moment was kissing him. But she knew she could not do this. He was completely drunk and in love with another woman, kissing him would be like taking advantage of him. But before she had the time to get away, Nathan grabbed her face and passionately kissed her. Haley did not even try to resist him and kissed him back.
Brooke date was finally coming to an end and Lucas, being a perfect gentleman walked her to her house.
"I had a really nice time" said Brooke honestly, she had not had a date like this in ages.
"Yeah, me too..." replied Lucas, smiling back at her. "We should do this again...sometimes...I mean...if you want to..."
"Yeah definitely"
"Great..." replied Lucas, before leaning to put a soft kiss on her lips. He wanted to kiss her so bad but did not want to rush thing either. He promised himself he was going to take things slowly so this is what he was going to do. But before he got the chance to get away Brooke deepened the kiss. She then put her arms around his neck and he put his hands on her hips pushing her against the door. This kiss started soft and tender but quickly became more passionate and intense. Brooke was running her hands through his messy hair and his hands were slowly running up her naked leg.
"Do...do you want to come inside" asked Brooke catching her breath. Lucas hesitated for a moment, he really wanted to take things slowly but he knew that if got into her house, things were not going to go smooth at all, and he wanted things to be different this time because she was different and she deserved better. But on the other hand, he was a man and was incredibly turned on by Brooke and this feeling seemed mutual.
"Are you sure you want to do this ?" asked Lucas. He needed to be sure that she was not going to regret it. Brooke thought for a moment, she was not the type of woman who gave herself to a man the first night, and after what she had heard of Lucas' reputation, waiting a little was probably the best thing to do. But on the other side, she was tired of waiting and doing the right thing, she wanted to live, to feel alive and she knew Lucas was the right person for it. She did not know him much but after the amazing date they had, she believed she could trust him with her body and most importantly...with her heart.
"I'm sure..." said Brooke before kissing him again.
"Love is a risky business"
