*Back to Hogwarts*
James stood in the hallway, waiting for Sirius to drag his lazy arse downstairs. He scuffed his feet against the floor only to hear his mother's voice, "Don't scuff my floors! You may be bigger than me but I can still box your ears, young man!" He laughed and turned around expecting to see his Mum smiling at him caringly, muttering about her so and the grey hairs he caused her. All he saw was an empty doorway.
They're gone. I'm never going to hear my Dad laugh or make my Mum smile. I'll never see them again.
He ran his hands through his hair as he sunk down onto the bottom stair. Leaning his head against the wall, he tried to imagine life without his parents, without their smiles, their laughter, and their unconditional love. He felt as if there was an enormous hole where they should be and it made him fell so alone and lost.
The only time I've ever felt like this was when I was only four and I got lost in Diagon Alley. I'd wandered into Knockturn Alley and a scary woman with mossy teeth and a tray, which looked like it carried human fingernails. I was bloody terrified. Then my Mum came; she picked me up and hugged me close, she was furious yet so relieved. She told me she loved me and would never leave me again.
But she has left me. They both have.
"Oi! Have you seen my deodorant? Never mind I'll just borrow Moony's again…Mate? You ok?" Sirius stopped dead behind him, "You know Dumbledore said if you weren't ready to go back, you could stay at home for a bit? Prongs, maybe that's best, think about it, no school for a few weeks?"
"Yeah and no bloody parents as well." James' sad laugh echoed in the now cold and empty house, "I'm better off at school, not that I ever thought I'd say that. If I stay here, I'll get bored and lonely, then I'll do something stupid." He grabbed his suitcase and made for the door.
Sirius followed and clasped James' shoulder, "We'll look after you, Prongs. We'll take your mind off everything, we promise. That's what Marauder's do for each other."
They smiled at each other, their first real smile since their parent's/adopted parent's death, and apperated onto Platform 9 and ¾.
Lily sat alone on one of the platform benches, watching the chaos of the return to Hogwarts. She enjoyed just sitting, observing the madness of pupils losing their belongings within seconds and parents obvious irritation and sadness as they knew they wouldn't see their children again for another few months. She could still hear the noise of the station over her headphones, which were blasting Fall Out Boy (Sugar, We're Goin Down); it was complete mayhem, but in a good way.
I wonder when I come and see my kids off, who I'll be like. Will I be waving madly and fretting about insignificant details? Or maybe I'll be tight-lipped and business-like until the train finally pulls away and I cry my heart out? Or perhaps I'll just be in constant floods of tears that my little darling is leaving me once more?
Lily's peaceful wonderings were interrupted by her friends waving madly from across the platform. She smiles, it was good to be back.
"Lily! Happy New Year!"
"Thanks, Happy New Year to you too, my darling Mary? Good holiday?"
"Boring as hell. We had the family round for the entire holiday. My cousins, the bloody idiots, wouldn't stop pestering me to do magic for them. I ended up turning them all into cushions for a bit of peace…except the spell wasn't one of my bests and I couldn't get rid of the bright pink floral pattern off Angus' face. Parents went insane, he was crying his eyes out and I was grounded until the wonderful return to school."
Lily giggled loudly, "Bloody hell, Mary! Didn't McGonagall teach you anything?" She imitated their Transfiguration professor's voice, "Don't you be turning your cousins into cushions, Mary MacDonald! You're a disgrace to the good name of Gryffindor and the art of Transfiguration."
The three girls burst into hysterics at the impersonation of their strict Head of House.
"Come on, let's get on the train before all the good seats are gone!" Marlene yelled above the noise of the platform.
"You, guys, go ahead, I'll get my things."
Lily began to drag her trunks toward the train as her friends left to find a compartment.
After helping 5 different pupils load their stuff onto the train, she was ready for a pumpkin pasty and a nice sit down.
"Alright, Lily." She whipped around to see him smiling at her, looking ridiculously gorgeous.
"Hi James. How are you?" Omg! My hands are literally shaking. I can't breathe. Be cool!
"Pretty shit, honestly, but getting better." He smiled sadly, "By the way, thanks for coming to see my Mum and Dad…you know before they… They really loved finally seeing the famous Lily Evans."
"Really, it was no bother. It was lovely, actually, to see them. Your parents seemed like lovely people."
"They were." He pushed his hands deep into his pockets and stared at the floor sadly for a moment, lost in thought. Suddenly he looked back up again. His eyes. Is it legal to have eyes that beautiful?
"You're wearing the necklace." He muttered, reaching out and rubbing his thumb over the small sliver heart shaped pendent that lay against her pale skin, "I'm glad you like it."
HE HAS JUST TOUCHED ME
"I love it." Why has my voice gone all breathy? "Thank you so much but you didn't need to get me such an extravagant gift."
"My Mum told me to buy it. It was ages ago. We were walking by this jewellry shop and she saw it. She turned to me and went, 'James, you should buy that for your Lily. All girls love a man who buys them jewellry and that is lovely.' It was when I was rather…'infatuated' with you. I was too scared to give it to you, as I didn't want a necklace lodge in my throat."
They laughed together.
"I love it, I really do." She paused thinking for something to say, "Girls love chocolate too. Just as a tip…for the future…you know as a friend."
"Cheers I'll bear that in mind. I'm glad you like the necklace. See you at dinner, Lily."
"Yeah, bye." She felt fixed to the spot, watching him walk towards the compartment, which help the other Marauders.
I can't decide whether to die of embarrassment or jump for joy. James Potter has just freaking touched me…I can die a happy woman. However I did just make myself seem like a weird, horny fat girl with a chocolate fetish. I do loath myself.
Lily finally managed to communicate to her legs the desire to walk and made her way to her friends.
Further down the train to the Head-Girl and her friends sat the Marauders. They had offered their condolences to James, trying to comfort their grieving friend. Unsurprisingly he didn't really want to talk about it so they all steered the conversation back to their normal topics: girls and rule breaking.
"So, Padfoot, any girls you got your eye on?"
"Ah, Moony, it's getting more difficult as I've dated most of the fit ones already. I'm hoping the holidays have been kind to a few as my fishing nets are getting rather empty and I cant just let other fisherman steal the goods before I've sampled them, if you know what I mean."
James laughed, "Mate, I think we all know what you mean."
"You really are such a man-whore."
"Shut up, Moony. You're just jealous because you aren't half the catch I am. My tackle hold the best bait in the castle."
"Please, lets not get into anther dick argument."
"What about you, Prongs? Still fishing for our fit, ginger Head-Girl?"
"First, please can we stop with the fishing metaphors? I'm beginning to feel rather seasick."
"Just answer the question, fisherman Prongs!"
"Well she is really hot and a great laugh…but I don't know anymore. I'm starting to think maybe I should move on? I mean I've been chasing after one girl for like 2 years and she obviously isn't interested in anything more than a friend. I'm starting to think I need to forget about her that way, as nothing is ever going to happen and she doesn't want anything to."
"Are you serious, Prongs? This is Evans we're talking about."
"I was with her on Christmas Eve and when I said about her being special to me, she seemed a bit flustered and awkward. So I think she just want to be mates and I'm good with that, we get on well now and I don't want to mess it up by coming onto her constantly. I'm happy with the fact it's never going to happen."
"Well there is plenty more fish in the fit girl sea."
