...
Little guy, little hands, little eyes and lots of time
What you gonna be what you gonna see
When your eyes are level with mine
I'll be level with you
I don't know what I would do
If I had to face the things that you've got coming down the line
Lots of luck, lots of health, lots of wealth, little pain
That's what I want for you but there's little I can do
To put you on the gravy train
I'll be level with you
You'll always end up coming through
But you'll find yourself lost in space now and again
The sunlight floated through the lonely window of Luna's 'prison'. She had hardly slept the whole night as her mind had raced as to what to do in the morning, and now that the morning was here, Luna still had no clue. All she could do was wait and see what the others would decide. It was not long before the door cracked open and Luna's blue eyes watched expectantly to see whom they would send in next. Minako? Artemis? Mercury perhaps? Luna's heart dropped as she saw the first strand of yellow hair fall into view and Usagi's blue eyes caught hers for just an instant.
Usagi stepped into the room slowly and she closed the door gently behind her. She had fought tooth and nail to convince the others to leave her alone with Luna, at least for a few minutes. Luna's head raised itself off of the bed, and Usagi stood by the door in silence.
"Usagi-chan..." Luna was now on the brink of tears. Usagi's head tilted downward and her hands squeezed tightly in order to keep her strength. Her chin lifted high suddenly and she looked at Luna with a fake strength and hardness.
"Why did you awaken me?" Usagi asked with her voice barely keeping steady. Luna's eyes looked her over and then back to her face, and her own blue eyes. She sat up on the bed staring at Usagi blinking back her tears. She needed to keep herself in check.
"Because I needed you to fix everything." Luna said. "To prevent the disasters to come."
"To come?" Usagi asked trying to appear tougher than she felt. Luna didn't speak. There was always danger in knowing the future. It was the one thing she knew for sure at this moment, and Pluto hadn't even had to say it. It was another reason Luna had never told Usagi everything. If Usagi remembered everything, would it make the future Luna had seen permanent? "Who are you?" Usagi tried a new question. Luna had already said it before, nothing was going to change. "How did you know all the things you told me?" Luna just couldn't tell her. Her head dropped sadly. "Please," Usagi begged now. "Luna, I want to help you. I want to believe in you!" There was more silence from the bed. "Luna!" Usagi shouted desperately.
"It doesn't matter anymore." Luna whispered. "You've been awoken, I just have to keep believing you will pull us through it." Luna paused. "Just like you always do." Usagi sighed and sank to her knees in the middle of the room.
"I've never brought anyone out of anything." Usagi said weakly. "They've always protect me, and... get hurt." Tears were building up in her eyes as she spoke, but she did not want Luna to see. "Everyone always gets hurt because of me." Usagi finished.
"Its because they believe in you." Luna encouraged. "Just like I do." Usagi closed her eyes in anger, and a tear fell onto her cheek. Luna jumped off of the bed and sat across from Usagi. "Usagi-chan, please." Usagi's eyes opened and tears remained streaming down her face, and her hand went to her forehead.
"I trusted you." Usagi spoke in anger. "I trusted that everything you said was true."
"And it is." Luna argued. "At least, I thought it was." Usagi's hand removed itself from her forehead and cupped her hands together tightly in her lap with her tears still falling steadily as she looked down at her hands.
"Then tell me one thing." There was silence from Luna. "Who is Chibiusa?" Usagi looked upwards at Luna who had not spoken in answer. The cat's mouth was gaping wide open.
"Usagi-chan did you remember that on your own?!" She demanded finally. Usagi blinked back the new torrent of tears that wanted to come.
"Just tell me who she is!" Usagi shouted. "Why does she keep haunting me?" Usagi failed in keeping the tears in check, and she was beginning to sob again. "Luna," Usagi cried. "You're the only one who was there for me, please, help me..." Usagi looked at her to see she was crying as well.
"I... I can't." Luna said through her own tears. "I don't know what will happen." Luna's eyes narrowed as she begged Usagi to understand. "I'd rather risk death than make that future permanent for you!"
"They might just kill you if you don't tell me!" Usagi shouted. "Please, I don't want that!" Usagi pleaded once more. Luna looked down to the floor, and Usagi leaned forward again in desperation. "Luna just tell me the truth!" Usagi sobbed. "Just... tell me!"
The Silver Crystal around Usagi's neck glowed brightly underneath her blouse and a surge of power illuminated the room. In an instant the door to the room opened and The Senshi rushed in at the sound of Usagi's scream with Artemis in front. A collective gasp came from those in the room as they saw what lay before them.
Usagi stared in shock at Luna who sat across from her... in human form.
She was so beautiful and completely different, but... the same crescent moon marking was engrained on her forehead, and... she had the same, sad, crying, blue eyes. Luna sat looking at her transformed hands in front of her, and then she looked back up at Usagi.
"I've done everything I can, Usagi-chan..." Her voice was sweet, and it rang out more clear than usual. "Its up to you now to change things."
Usagi lay on Makoto's bed once more unmoving. So much had happened and the girl looked worn out. The shock of awakening, Luna's mystery, and now transformation; they all appeared to have taken a toll on their beloved princess.
"We can't just leave Luna in there forever." Ami spoke up first as they closed the door of the room behind them.
"Where else are we going to put her?" Rei snapped, but she knew it was unjustified.
"I don't mind... I mean, I'm not using that room for anything." Makoto put in.
"That's not what she meant." Minako whispered, but she knew Makoto had already understood that. They couldn't keep Luna a prisoner. They had to figure out what to do, but as long as she didn't tell them anything that made sense, they couldn't decide. Artemis wasn't talking anymore, and it frightened Minako. Since Luna's transformation he had only walked around with his head slumped where as Minako had thought he would have been a raving lunatic. The transformation had had the complete opposite affect, and had silenced him completely. Not even Minako could get him to talk. He was just like Usagi now; looking utterly crushed.
"Well we can't kill her." Makoto spoke in a hushed voice not wanting to risk Usagi hearing her. Minako looked back at Artemis who was slumped on a pillow Makoto had set up for him. Oh how she wished he was talking. They really needed his help in this matter.
"If she were just a cat..." Minako started. "I would say to just keep her there, but..."
"She isn't." Rei finished bitterly. They couldn't have her there with the ability to turn human. "I just wish we knew how that transformation worked."
"She has no transformation item that I could find." Ami stated. "So it isn't like our own. Besides, it was too short of a transformation to be permanent. It appeared to be activated by The Silver Crystal, but I can't figure out how!"
"I wish Artemis would talk to me." Minako whispered. "If she really is a Mau like he is..." She paused. "He could explain things a bit." Suddenly the door to the bedroom opened again and Usagi's red face appeared.
"Usagi-chan?" The others stood there shocked. They had thought she was in a deep sleep. "Are you alright?" Minako raised her hand to touch her, but Usagi lifted her hand upward stopping her.
"I'm alright." She said softly. "I just need a walk."
"I'll go with you." Makoto offered, but Usagi was already shaking her head.
"I just need to be alone for now." Usagi said moving towards the door. "I just..." Her voice trailed off and her said eyes pleaded with them to not question her further.
"We understand, Usagi-chan." Makoto said finally.
"Just use your communicator if you need us." Minako spoke up, and Usagi nodded slowly.
"Okay," Then she disappeared out the door.
"We have to do something." Rei said after she was gone. "We have to figure out something, anything!" Minako looked back at where Artemis had been laying, but... he was gone now too.
Minako looked down the hall to where Luna's room lay, and there he was sitting at the door. Minako took a step forward and as she got closer she saw that he was sitting there looking upwards at the door knob with his tail wrapped around himself. She stood behind him a few feet and both of them were completely silent for a moment.
"Its okay if you want to just talk to her." Minako whispered finally, and he looked up at her, but still he didn't speak. Minako sighed and she sat down neck to him leaning against the door. "You were there for me when I had... my own meltdown. Please, let me be there for you. Not like I was for Hikaru." Artemis looked back up at the handle, but then he moved to curl up onto her lap. Minako pet him softly, and sighed again as she leaned her head back against the door. For twenty minutes they just sat there together with Minako petting his head and back slowly.
"All the things that could have been." Artemis' voice spoke suddenly, and it cracked for a moment as he spoke for the first time that morning. "That's what she represents for me." He said sadly. "I could have had a partner, someone there for me when I was homesick." Minako lifted her head forward.
"Where you homesick a lot?" He nodded slowly.
"At first, not anymore. Its been too long. I don't even remember Mau." Minako looked up at the door handle. "She really is from Mau." He concluded. "And that crescent marking isn't fake like I thought it was. It would have faded in her transformation if it was."
"How can she transform?" Minako asked. "Ami can't figure it out."
"Her body reacted to The Silver Crystal..." Artemis spoke with confusion in his voice. He couldn't understand it, but Minako was just happy to hear him talking again. "Hopefully mine will too someday, but it takes long periods of exposure. Eventually, if exposed for a really long time, one can learn to transform at will."
"Could she have gotten that from being with Usagi all this month?" Minako asked. Artemis shook his head vigorously.
"No, I mean years. Years of exposure, and for permanent, I mean like thousands of years." His voice was growing stronger. "And not just by simply being next to The Silver Crystal, I mean actual, true exposure to its power. Like when Usagi screamed."
"Oh," Minako frowned. "That doesn't make since though." Artemis nodded.
"I know, but..." He looked at the door again as well. "There she is, able to transform with The Silver Crystal's power." Minako looked down at him.
"Is... Is it possible... That some of what she says is true?" Minako asked in disbelief. Artemis opened his mouth, but then paused.
"I... I don't know." He said. "Its all too confusing." Minako began to stand up and Artemis jumped down onto the floor. Minako put her hand on the door handle and then looked down at him.
"Talk to her again." Minako said. "This time," She opened the door. "Without yelling at her." Artemis stared at the open door for a moment and she could see the nervousness in his eyes. Finally he took a deep breath and entered into the room again.
Usagi's feet stopped moving her forward, and she looked up finally to see where she had gone. She had been walking aimlessly for the better part of an hour now, and not a single thought had gone through her head, but only the intense sorrow that she had been fighting back. Her eyes adjusted to the sunlight above her, and her heart fell. She was at the park, her feet had carried her to the park... If she just walked under that bridge, she would be at the fountain. Usagi stepped forward against her better judgment. The fountain would only bring the sorrow out even more, but she just couldn't help herself. It was where she want to be at that very moment.
The fountain's cool water sprayed her face as she sat down and faced the sunlight once more as her hand lay over The Silver Crystal that was burried beneath her blouse. The Silver Crystal was just as cool as the water against her chest and she could feel it give off a soft hum of power. It was so much trouble for her; more than it was worth.
"Serenity!"
Usagi cringed and she wrapped her arms around herself tightly as she bit down hard on her bottom lip. There was so many horrible memories! And Mamo-chan, Endymion, was not going to be there for her. He had found another lover. The pain in her bottom lip increased as she bit harder and tears came back to her eyes.
Their love had been so strong, and now he was gone from her. He would go on not knowing her pain, but that was fine.
He was happy.
He had love.
But...
"We were destined to be lovers."Usagi whispered as the tears in her eyes were building up again. "Destined to be one." She wanted Luna. She needed Luna! Usagi's head dropped and her hand supported it as her elbows rested on her knees. Her hair was falling around her face as the first tear fell onto her lap. She loved him, but it could never be. "Mamo-chan." Usagi sobbed. He was not coming for her. Usagi was crying profusely now, and she couldn't stop. She was all alone, and the support she thought she had was gone. Luna was not trustworthy. This made the tears come even harder. "Luna... Oh Luna..."
Usagi had loved her. With all of her heart Usagi had loved her, and now she was betrayed. How could Usagi fix things? She never fixed things. She was the one in the center of destruction. Everyone had risked their lives for her, and in turn she had taken her own life. She had failed them all. Now she was alone again. How could she look at the others in the same happiness when they knew, and she knew, how she had failed them?
They would forever be seperated now. Perhaps not physically, but emotionally. An Mamo-chan was gone from her forever, and there was nothing she could do about it. They would never be back together again like in that happy memory.
"That memory..." Usagi's cries stiffled as she saw it unfold before her again and she was frozen in place. Slowly her hand left her forehead and she sat there slightly bent forward and her hands on her lap. She pictured the memory again and her eyebrows furrowed in confusion and her mouth opened in surprise.
That memory wasn't from the past...
Usagi gasped and looked up and out over the city. Where had it come from though? She had assumed it was her past, but... It wasn't. What did that mean? Were there still more memories for her to remember?
Chibiusa...
She sat up straight and her breathing was becoming harder. Did that mean Luna still could be telling the truth? Usagi was standing up now and staring in the direction of Makoto's place. In the light of day things were now a bit more clear and the memories of the past had made themselves in order, but the puzzle was only more confusion.
If Luna wasn't lying, then what did that mean? Usagi stepped forward towards Makoto's place. She had to get to Luna. She needed Luna.
Fear gripped at Usagi's heart.
What if... What if... They couldn't have killed her! Perhaps they had been waiting for Usagi to leave just to do that? Usagi's breathing was becoming shallow but it wasn't just because of the run. They wouldn't do that! They would not do that... She was sure of it.
It didn't stop her legs from pumping harder though.
Usagi slammed the front door of Makoto's house wide open and rushed into the kitchen were she was relieved to see all of them still standing there with Artemis in the middle.
"I need to talk to Luna again!" Usagi's voice was louder and more desperate than she had planned, but it revealed the true emotions that were running through her: fear, confusion, but an underlying sense of hope. "I think I've figured something out!" The others shared one of their glances as they decided how to proceed, and Usagi's heart rate soared, but it wasn't just from the running. Their was something in their eyes she couldn't place. "What?!" Usagi demanded. "What is it? What is wrong?" The others looked at her sadly, and Minako was the one to finally step forward.
"I'm afraid thats not possible, Usagi-chan" She said. Usagi's stomach fell as she was filled with even more fear.
"Please, this is important! I have to talk to her!" Usagi cried, but the others only kept staring at her sadly not wanting to be the ones to break the news to her.
"Usagi..." Minako's voice trailed off. She couldn't do it either.
"Luna is gone." Artemis' voice shocked all of them and Usagi couldn't comprehend what he was saying.
"Gone? Gone where?" Artemis shook his head.
"We don't know." He said. "I went in to talk to her again, and the window was wide open. Luna was no where to be seen." Usagi felt her legs weaken.
"Luna's gone?" She asked in disbelief. Artemis nodded, and Usagi sat down in the nearby chair around the table; her new spot of sadness. The others were afraid she might put her head down again and lock them out once more. She didn't though. She sat there appearing to be thinking.
"We can't keep going on like this." Rei complained. "Not knowing a thing! Who is this enemy that keeps sending Youma after V? Is Luna an enemy or not?!"
"You are right." Artemis said. "Its time we get some answers." Rei still appeared to fume.
"But from who?" She complained.
"From Queen Serenity herself." Artemis said lifting his chin high. The others stared at him in surprise.
"Queen Serenity?" Rei repeated.
"H-How?" Ami asked.
"But Artemis, you said we couldn't talk to her anymore!" Minako complained.
Artemis sat there on the table with his eyes closed as the three of them continued to talk at once, and he waited for them to queit down. Their questions halted and the tomcat opened his green eyes to view them all. They stood around Usagi who continued to sat at the table in silence.
"Yes, I said we couldn't talk to her from The Earth, but that does not mean we cannot go to her." Minako nodded in understanding.
"Queen Serenity is alive?" Rei asked in utter disbelief.
"No," Ami spoke softly as she appeared to realize something. "Her memories and spirit are alive..." She closed her eyes as she continued to think. "Eternity Main." She spoke the name with an edge of awe and her eyes opened. "I remember helping to reprogram it. With those computers, her essence could be preserved indefinetely as long as the system did not have to straind itself. I just..." She paused. "I didn't know that was why she was pushing me to finish upgrading it so quickly. Its as if she... As if she had a suspicion that the end..." She stopped there not knowing what to make of it all. "But thats on The Moon!" Ami said changing her chain of thought. Artemis nodded.
"With you five together again, you will be able to make the journey." He said, and the others stood there knowing he was right.
"Sailor Teleport." Minako reminded them.
"When?" Rei demanded. Artemis bit his lip as he calculated in his head.
"You would have the most accurate power on a full moon." He explained.
"Three nights." Minako interjected. "The day after tomorrow. The Moon will be completely full."
"Thats when we'll go." Artemis stated.
"But what will we need to ask? We remember the past." Ami questioned.
"Perhaps not!" Usagi spoke up finally. The others stared down at her shocked that she had spoken. They hadn't been sure if she had even been listening or not. "I have a memory," Usagi began quickly. "I can't explain it! It doesn't fit in with the others. Perhaps we just don't have all of our memories. Perhaps Luna is telling the truth!"
"I..." Artemis' voice trailed off. Usagi had worked herself up, and she was begining to dare to beleive it might be so. "I think its wise not to get your hopes up, Princess." Usagi slumped back in the chair sadly.
"Luna can't be an enemy." She mumbled with her head dropping.
"No." Artemis spoke again, and Usagi looked up to see him smiling a little bit. "I'd have to agree: Luna is not an enemy." Usagi's eyes brightened and so did his. The others in the room besides Minako stood shocked by this change in him. He had seemed to be Luna's greatest advisary, and the night before he had been her greatest accuser.
"Then what is she?" Ami asked. "She can't be telling the truth!"
"You said so yourself!" Rei reminded. Artemis sat silent for a moment, but then he nodded slowly.
"Yes, but that was before I saw her transformation, and before her escape." He paused. "If I hadn't seen her transformation with my own eyes, perhaps I would be a raving lunatic right now, but that is not the case." He looked up at them with serious eyes. "She could transform at will. Its the only way to explain her escape." He said. "Only a Mau exposed to The Silver Crystal's brilliant power for thousands of years could even dream of such control over their body. Therefore, what does that say about Luna?"
"That she was close to The Silver Crystal in the past." Ami said. "But for that long?" She asked in disbelief. "How could that be if we don't remember her?"
"That is what we must figure out by going to The Moon." Artemis finished.
"But its more than just her being able to transform." Minako spoke up leaning closer to Artemis. "Artemis, Luna could enter The Prayer Room!" Minako exclaimed. "Only The Queen and her advisors could do that! On rare cases, her Soldiers." Artemis nodded in understanding.
"We will just have to wait and see." Usagi sat touching The Silver Crystal gently as she listened to them.
"So Luna is our friend." She spoke with a small smile.
"I didn't say that." Artemis warned. "But perhaps..." He was no longer smiling and his face had grown dark. "I just... don't know. My heart is in turmoil right now, but its unexplainable." He sighed. "Its part of the reason I was so harsh on her. I had to fight back the strange urge to trust her, and it enraged me." Minako pet his head gently. She understood how that felt.
"Well, its a date." Rei spoke up happily. "Three days from now, we'll be on The Moon getting some answers!" The others nodded, but Usagi could only sit thinking with a sad look still on her face. A hand rested comfortably on Usagi's shoulde and she looked up to see Makoto. The tall girl had been silent the entire conversation, but Usagi could feel her silent support. Usagi blinked back a new set of tears; She had to be strong. There was no time to cry, and she should be happy. They were going to The Moon to get answers, but... Usagi squeezed The Silver Crystal in her palm and bit her lip.
What if they found something on The Moon that proved Luna was indeed an enemy?
