Nicole hummed to herself as she carried her several grocery bags in her arms, making her way to the exit.
Thunder crackled from outside, the rain seen hitting the pavement rather hard, as it was dark as ever. Several customers were heard groaning at the sight, upset by the sudden weather delaying their way home.
"Oh geez, it's awful out there." She muttered to herself, fumbling for her keys. "I should get these to the car quickly enough."
The doors soon slid open, letting in gushes of water onto the building carpet. A soaking wet Gumball quietly walked in.
"Gumball?!" Nicole came over, almost dropping her load of bags in surprise. "I thought you were at the arcade with-"
She paused, glancing around. It was just him. "Where's Darwin?"
"He left." Gumball looked up at her, rather miserable looking. A red fin shaped mark could be seen on his face, very much still stinging. "We found some stupid necklace and he got all weird with it on."
"Left? Where did he go? Did he do this?" His mother bent down, examining the red mark. She wasn't really sure how to react on it.
"I don't know, he wouldn't tell me. All I got was this slap for even bothering to ask."
Nicole stood up, worry in her expression. "Come on, we'll make it home, sort everything out, okay?"
"Wait what?! Mom we can't just go home we need to go find him!" Gumball dragged her towards the door. "For all we know he could get hurt out there!"
"I know sweetie, but we can't find him until this horrible weather clears up, it's too dangerous to go out in." She carried out her groceries, taking her eldest kid with her quickly. As if almost at the speed of light, they made it inside the car at record time, everything safely accounted for. She turned to face him in the passenger seat. "I'm sure he's alright out there. He's a fish, this is nothing for him. Maybe he's just having an off day and needs time to cool down."
"...Okay..." Gumball slumped in his seat, arms crossed. This wasn't right. They needed to be out searching everywhere! That gem was doing something, and he didn't like it one bit.
As soon as they got home, he entered rather glumly, and sat himself onto the couch. He didn't even bother to really see what was on TV, instead choosing to stare at the wall above it, almost zoning out to it.
"Where's Darwin?" Anais looked up from her book, raising one eyebrow. She had not moved from her spot that she had been in this morning.
"Off being a jerk somewhere." The cat replied, not looking at her. "Mom won't let me go find him, says that he's probably 'having an off day' and 'needs time to cool down' or whatever."
"Did something happen to set him off?" The young bunny sat beside him on the couch, her expression now concern. She pointed to her older brother's slap mark. "Because that isn't a thing I normally see him doing."
"I think it has something to do with that weird necklace he found on the sidewalk. It's like.. It's like it kicked his positivity out the window with a steel boot." Gumball was slightly hunched over, thinking over the memory as he spoke.
Anais once again raised her eyebrow. "Weird necklace?"
"Yeah. Weird purple diamond-y necklace thing." He laid back, letting out a sigh.
"Sounds like possession if anything, but I'm not a hundred percent certain, it could be a coincidence." She spoke. Her worry was very much increased. "If that's the case, the worst thing you can do is leave him outside to his own devices."
"That's what I've been trying to tell mom!" Gumball stood up, throwing his hands in the air with a dramatic flourish. He soon paced the living room. "Apparently she can handle everything else but a thunderstorm right now!"
Anais nodded with understanding. "So are you just going to sit here sulking about not doing anything, or are you actually going to go find him?"
The cat paused, as his face morphed to that of determination. "YES! I'm gonna find him and get that necklace off!"
He raced upstairs to the bedroom, digging through the closet until he found his red raincoat, with equally matching red boots. Putting them on, he flipped the hood over his head, and made his way back to the front door, his skateboard in hand. "Thanks Anais!"
She nodded, watching him race out the door. "Good luck out there."
Gumball made his way down the street, skating around potholes and large puddles, as he searched desperately for the goldfish. The lack of light around him only worsened his situation, as he grumbled to himself for not bringing a flashlight. There had been no signs of Darwin anywhere.
As he continued to look around, a strange glow caught his eye from the distance. "What is that?..."
The feline skated toward it, soon finding himself standing in front of an opening to the Forest of Doom. A purple light was emitting from the woods, almost as if it were like a party going on inside. Gumball, skateboard in hand, exhaled slowly. He couldn't admit it up front, but something was wrong with this woods. The thought of it, especially knowing Darwin was inside somewhere likely, worried him. Scared him even. What would he do if something horrible happened to the other?
He shook the thoughts away. There wasn't a point to be a coward at this moment. "I'm coming buddy.."
Gumball shivered as he walked in, feeling the temperature change immediately. He couldn't back out now. The cat traveled down an old trail path, following the purple glow to its source as best as he could. As he walked, he couldn't help but try and figure out what was going on. Why did Darwin come here? Did the necklace somehow lead him?
His thoughts were interrupted, as he found himself at a clearing. A cliff hung overhead, with a lake below that sloshed around, likely overflown from the rain still very much pouring down. Something about it made him feel uneasy, as he took his eyes away from it.
"Darwin? Are you here?" Gumball glanced around, trying to locate any sign of the fish, but coming up with none. "Dagnabbit! Did I come all this way for nothing?! Stupid light thing-"
"I told you not to follow me."
The cat's ears perked up, as he turned towards the voice. His worry turned to relief, seeing Darwin standing by some bushes. "Darwin! Thank gosh I was looking everywhere for you dude!"
"Why?"
Gumball frowned. This wasn't right. He soon looked closer. Darwin was still very much wearing the necklace, which glowed brightly where they stood, practically the only light there. A scowl could be seen on the goldfish's face, uncharacteristically angry, almost.. Sinister.
However, what caught his attention most definitely was the sharp knife in the other's hand, gripped tightly.
"..Darwin?... What are you doing?..." The cat could feel his stomach drop in horror at the sight, getting worse once he noticed the fish coming closer.
"Have you ever noticed the pain you cause him?" Another voice came out of Darwin, slightly lower pitched, but seeming to use the original body's vocal cords faintly. "You have only ever hurt him, even when he tries to help you. You push him away."
Gumball took several steps back, however quickly stopped, realizing he was several feet away from the cliff. The water was starting to look scarier in this situation now. Fear was heavy in his eyes, as he could only look at Darwin with an utmost terror. "D-Darwin please.. D-Don't do this.. Look I-I'm sorry if I hurt you today I-I was just in a bad mood and-"
"SHUT UP!" The voice rang out, loud and booming. Darwin raised the blade up higher, approaching the other. "You will pay for your actions. Nobody will know what happened to you."
The voice shifted into Darwin's regular voice, cheerful and peppy. It was horrific. "Darwin's going to say he never saw you this night, and he really was just needing some air!"
Gumball could feel himself hyperventilating. This wasn't Darwin. Something was indeed possessing him. What could he do? He needed to run. He needed to find help. Before he could even respond, the knife was plunged into the earth, as if some strong being put it there. "DARWIN NO!"
"Goodbye." Darwin waved innocently, as the cliff gave way.
The cat screamed in horror, as he fell below, crashing into the lake which swallowed him and his tears. The last thing he saw was the grin on his best friend's face, as everything faded to a black.
