...
You're a liar but I'm a coward so I can't throw a stone
We're so imperfect but so worth it because we're not alone
It's the wars that we wage, the lives that we take
For better or for worse
It's the lion we cage, the love and the rage
That keeps us wanting more
But isn't it beautiful
The way we fall apart
It's magical and tragic all the ways we break our hearts
So unpredictable
We're comfortably miserable
We think we're invincible
Completely unbreakable
And maybe we are
But isn't it beautiful
The way we all fall apart
The world is dark but all it takes
your love to spark
To set my heart on fire once again
Usagi rushed towards the door and away from the others; unable to handle it all anymore. No longer able to try to put up a front for the others like she had been trying to.
"Usagi-chan!" Makoto called after her as she leaned forward in an attempt to catch her, but Usagi shook her off as she bolted away from the rest of the group. "Usagi!" Makoto moved to follow after her, but Michiru grabbed hold of her.
"Let her be..." She whispered, and Makoto looked up at her face in fear.
"She can't be alone!" Makoto told her. "Not now! She isn't like that! You can't leave her alone when she is breaking apart at the seams! She isn't one of those types!" Makoto said quickly. "She needs support!"
"I'll go talk to her." Luna said standing up, it was actually the first time she had spoken unprovoked since Makoto and Usagi had arrived at the house.
Usagi rushed out of the room, and out of the house entirely. "Rei-chan..." She couldn't breath as she left the house and only stopped once she was up against the wooden railing that wrapped around the porch. She pressed her stomach against it and she leaned forward unable to do anything but try to regain her ability to breathe. "Rei-chan..." She whispered in disbelief.
"Whether or not she is still alive... We cannot say..." The sad words penetrated through her and she looked up to the sky with the sun growing lower in the sky. Luna moved through the doorway and she watched Usagi sadly as Usagi's shaking body stilled and she stood up straight and her hands remained in tight fists as they sat on the railing, and she remained staring upwards.
"Usagi-chan..." Luna said softly. She feared if she spoke any louder she wouldn't be able to contain her sorrow, or how broken her mother's heart felt. Luna sighed and she jumped up to sit on the porch swing hoping Usagi would join her and stroke her fur gently. It would probably do both of them a world of good. From her new angle, though, she could now see the side of Usagi's face and her sapphire blue eyes were distant, or perhaps maybe a bit angry even. "Usagi-chan?" Usagi's eyes closed and her head dropped as tears began to stream down her cheek. The silent tears hurt Luna more than her sobs all the times before. She was trying to be strong, but could no longer do so. "Usagi..."
"I... I can't." Usagi said in a weak, broken voice. Luna didn't speak, and they remained in silence for a moment in the golden light of the afternoon. "I can't." Usagi repeated. Her eyes opened and she stared out towards the street, her eyes revealing how broken she really was, but she still struggled to keep herself at least in one piece. "I can't fix what you all want me to..." She said lifting her gaze towards the sun again.
"But you can, Usagi-chan!" Luna said. "We all believe in you! We all have... hope." Usagi's fingernails dug into the palms of her hands as she tightened her fists' grip, and she shook slightly.
"But I can't." She said not looking to Luna. Luna opened her mouth to speak again, but Usagi was not finished. "Luna, I... I know." She said, her voice cracking and falling short. "I know Pluto was lying..." Luna's mouth dropped in surprise and her eyes widened. "I could feel it..." She said with her voice growing hallow. "Her sadness when all of our hearts gathered together as one and filled The Holy Chalice. I know... it can't be saved. It was just a lie." Luna's eyes narrowed as tears threatened to spill over her eyelids. "I can't save it for everyone." Usagi's shoulders quivered and she cast her gaze downward as the tears continued to move down her cheeks. Her arms lifted and she crossed them over her chest. "I can't do anything!" Usagi said with her voice growing higher in pitch as she then gasped for air as she contained her tears from becoming deep sobs again. "I'm sorry!" She said with her throat constricting. She shook her head quickly. "I can't do anything!"
"That's not true!" Luna almost shouted. "You can fix it! You can do the impossible just like you have done before!"
"I'm... I'm not the same person who did all the things you remember." Usagi whispered. "I'm not the one you all say I am..."
"You're the one we all believe in!" Luna said. "You're the one they have put all of their love, hopes, and dreams in!" Luna continued. "You are the light that saved them all from themselves; from their loneliness and sorrow! And they believe you can save everything!"
"It can't be saved... It's all gone." Usagi whispered refusing to listen to Luna. "Pluto-"
"Yes, Pluto lied. But she didn't lie to give you false hope!" Luna said. "She did it because she still has hope! She still has faith!" Luna's voice was growing louder and louder as she spoke. "Because, even though it goes against all of the rules, all that she knows, she still believes in you, Usagi-chan. She has seen you do the impossible before, and she believes, I believe, you can do it again!"
"I can't!" Usagi shouted, and then her voice grew softer again. "I can't do anything. I'm weak... Everyone has to help me. I'm always getting in the way."
"That's not true." Luna countered. "Perhaps you are not the grand fighter, or the strongest emotionally. You fall and break over and over again. But... after you hit the lowest of lows, you pick yourself up. Not because you believe in your own abilities but because you refuse to give up. You have to keep fighting. Not for yourself, but for those you love. You are the light that loves all, and you attract everyone because of that love. You do not have the power you do because of your title, but because of your love!" Luna paused as she realized she was just spewing words now. But she had to. Usagi had to hear it! "Usagi-chan... They all believe in you. They would sacrifice their lives for you-"
"I don't want that!" Usagi cried. "I don't want anyone to die..."
"Even if they do die, they will always live on in you..." Luna said softly. "As long as you live, the Senshi cannot die. They are one with you, and are always striving to be so. Its how you all began... They will give their lives for you, but they will also give you their power and strength." Luna watched Usagi for a moment who remained bent forward with her arms remaining wrapped around her. "Because... they believe in you, and... I believe in you."
"Will we really have a future?" Usagi asked absently. "Will it really be there... if I fight?"
"The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything." Luna said borrowing Setsuna's quote from Einstein. Usagi breathed in surprised, but then her wide eyes narrowed again.
"I can't... I'm too empty. Too weak..." Usagi whispered.
"I will help you!" Luna said jumping down off of the swing and she stood staring up at Usagi. "I will be there... to the very end! I promise! I will not make the same mistake another time! I will not leave you alone! I swear it! I will help you carry the pain!" Luna said desperately. "Just please... don't give up!" Luna said. "There is so much you have to fight for! Even if you don't know it... Don't remember it... You have to! For yourself as much as the others!"
"Fight for..." Usagi whispered. "Hai." She said softly. "Naru-chan, Setsuna-san, Rei-chan, everyone... they believe in me..." Usagi whispered and she closed her eyes. "You are right..." She told Luna, and then she turned her face towards her, her eyes saddened still. "I can't give up... Perhaps I am empty, but they have all put their trust in me. I just... don't know if I can carry it to the very end." Usagi continued. "I don't know if I can survive it. Facing Mamo-chan... Will I break?" She asked. "Will their belief be enough to stir me to face him? I don't know... I don't know..." Her voice was growing more and more quiet as she shook her head. Luna's shoulders slumped and Usagi knelt down beside her on the porch and she stared up at the sun as it continued to make its descent in the sky. "I have to fight for their future. Naru-chan's future... I have to make sure it does not turn into darkness. Luna, please, help me not fall into despair... Not again..." Luna placed her paws on Usagi's knees.
"I promise!" Usagi looked down at her.
"Tonight... The Full Moon... Rei-chan said it was best for new beginnings. For making requests for the future." Luna's mouth opened in surprise as Usagi picked herself up off of the porch. "Rei-chan isn't dead... I can feel it. Her belief as well." She stared out into the street towards the city and the mansion. "We cannot put it off any longer... It ends... tonight..." Luna's eyes remained wide in surprise as Usagi appeared a million times older, and she could almost see Eternal Sailor Moon standing in front of her, like she had always imagined her standing in front of The Galaxy Cauldron. "Will we really be together again? Like we were in that happy memory?" Usagi whispered pressing her hands over her heart. Luna nodded forcefully.
"Yes!" Luna said. "We will get back what we have lost! Even if it seems impossible!"
"I wish I could truly believe it... Like you and the others..." Luna's eyes narrowed sadly.
"Usagi-chan..."
"What about you, Usagi-chan?" Her mother asked cheerfully. Usagi picked up the chopsticks and placed the food into her mouth and smiled brightly towards her mother as the family continued to talk about their day as they ate. "How was your day at school?"
"I wasn't late." Usagi said happily. "And I got a B on my test!" She said and then she paused as she held the clump of rise halfway to her mouth. "Umino got Naru-chan a ring..." She said softly. Ikuko's face lit up, and Shingo rolled his eyes. Her father laughed a bit.
"Umino is a very nice boy." He commented. Ikuko placed her elbows on the table as her eyes reflected mischievously at Usagi.
"And when are you going to bring home a nice boy for us to meet?" She inquired. Kenji's face fell as Usagi's eyes fell a bit.
"You aren't dating are you?!" He cried out. Usagi smiled softly.
"No... Not like that." She said softly. The dinner passed casually the rest of the time, and after it was finished Usagi gladly volunteered to help her mother with the dishes. Ikuko eyed her curiously.
"Helping out with chores?" She asked on jest. "Is there something you are not telling me? Or perhaps some favor? Money?" Usagi's face turned red.
"N-No." She said, and she placed the plats into the sink and began to water. Ikuko stopped her.
"Go on and play." She said. "I'm so proud of your grades improving. You've really stepped up in the last month or two." She said. Usagi froze and for a moment the only sound was of the running water. Usagi's eyes revealed her sadness. "Usagi-chan?"
"Mama... What would you say... if I spent the night somewhere tonight?" She asked. Ikuko frowned.
"Its a school night!" She said. "And you just had a sleepover with your friends." Usagi nodded slowly, but she could vividly remember what had happened at that last sleep over. It hadn't been fun and games like it had started out, and tonight wouldn't be either.
"I know, but... there is something I have to do..." She said softly. "Something I cannot put off any longer." Ikuko's eyes opened wide in surprise as an irrational fear gripped her heart, but Usagi seemed genuine in her plea. "Please..." Ikuko nodded slowly as she gripped the dirty cup in her hand tightly.
"Alright..." She agreed. Usagi suddenly hugged her, and it made Ikuko's fear erupt into something even larger. Usagi pulled away and offered her mother a small smile.
"Thank you." She said before moving to exit the kitchen, and then she turned to her mother for a moment again and offered her a large smile, but there was a hint of sadness to it as well that Ikuko could detect. The girl... Ikuko held back a gasp as she could no longer see Usagi as a little girl anymore. She looked completely transformed. A transformation that had been taking place over the last few weeks. The new woman before Ikuko exited the room and Ikuko found herself moving to the doorway and from there she found Usagi kissing her father's cheek and hugging a very reluctant and embarrassed Shingo who pushed her away.
"Get off! What's the matter with you?!" Usagi went towards the door without answering.
"Where are you going?! It's a school night!" Usagi simply blew a cheerful kiss, but her smile didn't feel as genuine as it had once been. Usagi exited the house and Ikuko stood paralyzed with fear as she noticed Usagi carried no change of clothes or school bag with her. Luna's sitting figure sat just outside the door and as Usagi disappeared around the corner Luna's blue eyes gleamed in the reflection of the house's light and then the cat turned to follow after Usagi. Ikuko stood in the doorway a moment and suddenly she was brought out of her paralyzed state by the sound of glass shattering. The glass she had been hold had somehow slipped from her fingers as the had refused to work. "Ikuko!" Ikuko took a step back out of the doorway as Kenji stood up and made his way towards her. "What's wrong?" He asked. Ikuko shook her head as tears drifted down her cheek and the irrational fear consumed her.
"We're never going to see her again..." She let out with both fear and helplessness. Kenji frowned.
"What do you mean? Where is Usagi going?" Shingo entered the room as well.
"What's going on?" He asked. Ikuko placed her hand over her mouth as she began to cry uncontrollably, and Kenji wrapped his arm around her shoulders.
"Usagi..." Ikuko cried. "Please! Come back after tonight..." She said pressing her hand over her mouth again as she tried to control herself. "Please..." Kenji and Shingo found that her fear crept into them and they stared back towards the door Usagi had exited through, and their hearts began to beat faster and Kenji tightened his arms around his wife, and Shingo stood in silence unsure of what too make of it.
"She will." Kenji told her. "Our little girl..."
"Yeah!" Shingo said. "Usagi-baka can't be in any sort of danger." Shingo reasoned. "You're just being sentimental." He said it, but he didn't want to admit the true fear he had felt beginning to grow inside him too. Ikuko's eyes closed shut tightly as she continued to cry.
"Hai..." She said in agreement, but she still remained in a fit of tears.
Jed placed The Black Crystal on the top of his desk and sat down in the chair. His eyes stared vacantly at The Crystal, and he made no move to pick it back up, nor made any hint as to what he would do with it. It hadn't meant to be just for Rei, but the original plan had included a place to keep Zoi out of the way during the battle. Nephra had almost succeeded too, until... Kunza had discovered their plan and forbade it outright. And grudgingly, Jed and Nephra had agreed to listen to him, and his reasoning. He had made a valid point that Nephra and Jed could not allow themselves to ignore.
If Beryl had changed her mind... Had gone to call on Zoi only to find he was nowhere to be found... It would have worse repercussions then the two of them were willing to face. Her anger would have proved to be his undoing.
"I will stay close to him, to keep him out of danger. We cannot take the chance of him becoming the object of Beryl's anger." Jed frowned as he recalled the words in order to strengthen his resolve to let it be. Nephra had simply remained in quiet agreement, though still angered, and it had only been when Kunza had left did he turn to Jed and given him the crystal for his "personal mission". Perhaps they could not take chances with each other's lives and safety, but for some reason, Nephra found he could not refuse Jed's desire to use the crystal to save Sailor Mars. If he wanted to risk his life on such... stupidity... he would not get in his way.
"Do what you want... Just leave me out of it." He had said before walking away, anger in his features. Jed didn't think he was angry at anything in particular, the whole situation had worn each of them entirely thin. And the more Jed allowed himself to stew about it, the more it disturbed him. Why had he abandoned, why had all of them abandoned, the people they had cared most about? At first he hadn't wanted to know. He hadn't wanted to know the reason at first when he had first remembered, but now... he needed to know. It was driving him insane not knowing. He needed to know... What type of person was he exactly? What had he gained exactly from choosing to follow Beryl? It didn't add up in his mind...
"There is no hope for any of us." He let himself think. "The only way we can make up for it... is to save Mamoru this time." He turned his chair away from the desk and crystal and stared out of the window with a heavy sigh. "We can't even do that." Beryl had him by her side every second, and when he had come to get both Jed and Nephra earlier that day he had acted as if he had never met them before, nor responded to any of their comments or questions. He... was dead inside, and hatred seemed to be the only thing showing he was not simply just Beryl's zombie; like they had allowed themselves to become back then. He could remember that much. He had lost the ability to make his own decisions once he had signed himself away to Beryl. It had only been after Endymion had collapsed onto the ground dead had they been able to snap out of it entirely; when it was already too late. "Again, we've failed." He thought. This time they had been in control of their own minds, but still they had been too slow in moving, and Endymion, Mamoru, had paid the price for it. He glanced back towards the crystal where he knew Rei was raging trying to break out. If he died, the crystal would automatically break and set her free, but if not he would have to come and break her free himself, and face her anger. That was alright though... She could be angry. As long as she was alive and safe... Something he was uncertain he could achieve for Mamoru.
Nephra sat against the desk as Zoi remained fiddling with papers. All the secrecy he had hated he was no fully a part of, and he found himself filled with even more self-hate. Kunza stood in the doorway, and Zoi looked up at the two of them for the fifth time, and frowned again before looking back down at his work.
"Is there really no reason you are all hovering around me today?" Zoi asked coldly. Kunza didn't move, but Nephra nodded.
"Nothing." He confirmed. "We're just board." Zoi's scowl deepened but he did not look back up at them as he worked. Nephra leaned closer to him. "What? Can't we just relax and hang out with our younger brother of sorts?" Nephra questioned. Zoi glared up at him.
"There is always a reason behind the things we do around here." Zoi answered. "There is never anything that is what it is up front." Nephra leaned back and crossed his arms.
"So suspicious." He grumbled. Zoi looked from him to Kunza.
"I finally realized what you meant." Zoi said to Nephra. "About being stuck here." Nephra didn't move, and before Zoi could continue Nephra felt a sudden pulse of energy in his heart and mind.
"Nephrite, Jedeite... Appear before me." Beryl's command came clearly in his brain, and he met Kunza's eyes. The white haired man nodded slowly, and Nephra stood up off of the desk and made his way past Kunza. He turned to look back at Zoi and then turned to Kunza once more.
"Keep him safe." Nephra pleaded. If they couldn't keep Endymion safe, they could at least keep the youngest of The Shitennou out of danger. Kunza nodded in understanding and turned back to face Zoi who sat a bit confused. They would succeed in at least one thing. Hopefully...
Beryl sat with the crystal ball working its magic in her hands; her long fingernails giving an eerie effect to her hand motions around it. Within the crystal she saw The Princess' pale face as she looked upwards and Beryl let out a low laugh.
"Come Princess... your death awaits you." Prince Endymion remained kneeling on one knee beside the throne she had erected for herself, and Beryl looked up towards the two grand doors with a wicked smile. "Your Prince misses you..."
Usagi stood staring upwards at the large, imposing black wall as it overshadowed her as the Full Moon's light floated down behind them. Her fingernails dug into the palms of her hands as the others stood beside her.
"It ends... tonight!"
