Roland and Charlie sat in the ER waiting room at Mercer. Sophie had gone back more than an hour ago and hadn't come out yet. Roland looked at Charlie and said, "Do you think it is what I think it is?"
Charlie rubbed her own abdomen protectively as the twins started moving again. She looked down and smiled lovingly but then looked back up at Roland with serious look, "I hope not but I think so."
Sophie came out at that moment, tears in her eyes, "Mrs. Mayfield?"
"Sophie, I told you Charlie is fine," said Charlie turning around to face her, "What is it honey?"
"Mom and Dad wanted to talk to you," said Sophie.
Charlie nodded, "Okay what room is she in?"
"105," answered Sophie.
"I'll stay here with you," said Roland nodding to Charlie to go back.
Charlie nodded and headed back to the room. Jackie was sleeping in a hospital bed hooked up to all sorts of monitors. The doctor was in the room as was a laptop with Kevin's face on the screen, "Doctor. General Clarke," Charlie nodded.
Jackie awoke upon hearing Charlie's voice, "Sorry I must've dozed off."
"That's okay," said Charlie, "How are you doing?"
Jackie looked down and Charlie knew she was holding back tears. The doctor left the room for privacy's sake, "I lost the baby," Jackie said quietly.
Charlie bit her lip. She knew it was coming the moment Sophie had called her but hearing the news didn't make it any easier, "What happened?"
"I um," said Jackie starting to hyperventilate.
"Deep breath sweetheart," said Kevin through the laptop, "Everything's okay."
"No it's not Kevin! Our baby died inside me!" shouted Jackie.
"Jackie," said Charlie taking her hand, "What happened."
"I don't know," admitted Jackie honestly, "I had an ultrasound about three weeks ago and the doctor said I was about nine weeks along everything was fine. The heart was beating. Sophie can confirm, she heard it. They did another one today and there was no heartbeat."
The twins started kicking again and Charlie hissed but not out of pain. She turned towards the screen and asked Kevin, "How are you doing? Both of you?"
"I'm a little. Overwhelmed," he admitted when he found the right word.
"I mean, you know I've had complications but nothing ever like this," said Jackie softly almost whispering.
Charlie took a deep breath, "Does Patrick know? That Jackie is err was pregnant?"
"No," Jackie shook her head, "I only told Sophie in case…" At that moment, the tears that Jackie was holding back finally spilled loose and she started to cry harder than ever. Charlie looked over at the screen and she could tell all he wanted was to be in the room with his arms around Jackie. Charlie swore she saw a tear roll down Kevin's cheek.
"I'm so sorry Jackie," said Charlie, "I really am." Charlie thought about all she had gone through with Nicole to get pregnant and she knew she'd be heartbroken if she lost her children, especially if they hadn't gotten the chance to live.
"Thank you," Jackie said a small smile forming and then disappearing just as fast. The doctor entered the room again.
"Okay Mrs. Clarke," he said and then stopped when he was Charlie.
"I'll leave now," said Charlie.
"No," said Jackie grabbing her hand, "She can stay doctor."
He nodded and continued, "I have your discharge papers. You need to get plenty of rest and make sure you take your pain medication as need. And you'll bleed until, um, the miscarriage is complete," he said softly, "I'm going to give the instruction to Ms. Clarke."
Jackie nodded her understanding but made no attempt to hide her devastation. Kevin spoke, "Well honey I really have to be going. I'll check on you and Sophie later tonight."
"If you want I'll stay with her," said Charlie, "I mean, if you want me to and to help Sophie."
"Please?" said Jackie.
"Okay then," said Kevin, "I love you."
"I love you too," said Jackie.
Charlie left the room as Sophie went back again. She walked over to Roland and said, "I'm staying with Jackie tonight but I'll drop you off first."
Roland nodded as they left Mercer. Charlie dropped Roland of at his house and then drove over to the Clarke house. She knew that Jackie and Sophie were already home based on the numbers of cars out front. Charlie knocked quietly on the door and Sophie answered, "Hi Charlie," she said softly.
"Hey Soph," said Charlie.
"Mom said you were staying with us tonight."
Charlie nodded, "Is she upstairs?" she asked walking into the house.
"Yeah. She's supposedly sleeping but…" said Sophie trailing off.
"How are you doing?" asked Charlie softly.
"I don't know," said Sophie honestly, "I mean I'm closer to Dad and Patrick than to Mom, but she's still my Mom. And I hate seeing her in such pain like this: physical and emotional."
Charlie's heart broke for her. Having her father and brother deployed at the same time was hard enough on a sixteen year old. And to have to take care of her grieving mother on top of that? "I'm going upstairs to check on her."
Charlie walked upstairs to find Jackie's eyes closed but tears streaming down her cheeks, "Jackie?"
Jackie rolled over and attempted to smile, "Hey."
"How are you feeling?" asked Charlie.
"Painful," Jackie winced, "I don't want to take the medicine because of my history with pain pill addiction."
"Jackie if you're really in pain, it's not going to hurt you," said Charlie.
Jackie looked down, "But it won't really help the pain. It won't help me get over what I did to my baby."
"Jackie, it's not your fault…"
"How can this not be my fault? As mothers we're supposed to protect our children and my body did the complete opposite," Jackie sobbed.
Charlie took Jackie into her arms and said, "It's okay let it out Jackie." Charlie and Jackie stayed that way for the rest of the night until Jackie fell asleep and Charlie went into the guest bedroom after checking on Sophie, "You girls are lucky," she said rubbing her abdomen, "You're going to be given the chance to live."
