Clinch: Chapter Eleven

The Most Powerful Emotion
By: Brandon Foster, 5th Hour
The majority of people would say that this is a trick question. That there does not exist only one emotion that reigns as most puissant. They would say that all of the emotions are equally powerful. It's incredible how untrue that statement is.
See, all of the other emotions can be easily overpowered. Sadness or grief—time has the ability to subdue them, and heal the pain they caused. They can be vanquished by you and you alone, if you have the will. Happiness; that flame can be extinguished quicker than you can blink. And love—love isn't always present. There is one emotion that is always there, no matter how small it may seem. It is something that can bring you as high as the clouds when you're stuck in the dirt.
That emotion is anticipation—or hope.
This emotion can be found anywhere, even when it seems like everything is falling apart. A vestige of anticipation or hope is always floating around somewhere; you just have to find the strength to believe in it.
Hope is the flame of the candle, flickering in the eerie darkness of the night. It is the promise of a new tomorrow. It is the fact that the Sun will rise every day, and so will you. Hope is the dandelion growing through the rubble. It is the spark of devotion and forgiveness in your loved ones' eyes. It is being able to feel the piano keys under your fingertips a little bit more each time you try.
Hope lifts you up when you're falling, and it answers your cries when you're screaming for help. It can give your life a whole new meaning. It shows a strength in you that you may not have known you had. It can get you back on track when you lose your way. Hope can bring you to the top of the world.
Hope and anticipation are so incredibly and irrevocably powerful, because their strength can bring you the durability and potency that is needed to get over the rough patch you've been stuck in.
Keep moving forward.
Because hope assures you that life goes on, and so will you.
After one last look-over, Brandon smiled and slipped the essay into his backpack.
It was gonna take a lot more than past mistakes and a screwed-up hand to keep him down.
So bring it, World.
Now, the rest is up to you...
(And yes, hope IS an emotion, I googled it.)
"Clinch" is now complete.
Enjoy the premiere tonight! :)
