Chapter 50: Mechanized Mayhem

"You don't expect us to believe that, right?"

Rex and Weevil were giving Izzy and Creighton a pair of strange looks. After fending off yet more Neo Ghouls, the pair explained to the former regional champions what had transpired for all of this to take place. It was somewhere between the journey to the Beyond and the revelation of the Trinity's existence that Rex and Weevil started to think this was somehow one big hoax.

"I haven't even seen dung beetles roll around as much as you two," Weevil remarked, adjusting his glasses.

"But it's true!" Creighton retorted. "Trust me, I've still got the scorch marks to prove it!"

"Look, it doesn't really matter if you believe us or not," Izzy reasoned. "The point is, these Neo Ghouls came here with a purpose, and we're going to need you guys to help us out as best as you can."

Rex and Weevil looked at each other for a moment. "Give my colleague and I a moment to consult," Weevil said before huddling with Rex off to the side. Creighton and Izzy exchanged a look of their own as the odd pair murmured something to each other.

"Alright, if these Spirit Dragons are real, aren't they as powerful as the Egyptian God cards?" Rex murmured.

"They most certainly are," Weevil concluded. "And if we help these losers out, we can get closer to them and by proxy the Spirit Dragons as well!"

Rex smirked. "And then when they least expect it, we'll take em for ourselves!"

"Precisely, my ant-brained fellow!"

"H-hey! My brain's not ant-sized!"

"It's a compliment, dino-brain! Ants are intellectually superior to many of your dinosaurs!"

"Look, whatever, let's just stomp these Neo Ghouls and then go from there!"

"Right!"

The two reconvened with Izzy and Creighton, with Weevil giving a curt reply, "We will help you clear out these Neo Ghouls. It shouldn't be hard for a group of skilled duelists as ourselves."

Creighton laughed. "Well alright then! Let's get moving then! There's bound to be more of them skulking around!"

Creighton led the charge through the city as Izzy barely caught notice of Weevil and Rex not so subtly chuckling behind them. She only rolled her eyes as she kept walking ahead of them, knowing full well what their misguided intentions were.

"That's…a lot to take in."

Joey had just finished explaining to Espa Roba what was going on with the town. With the Neo Ghouls present, it was clear there needed to be an explanation, though Roba likely got far more of one than he could have ever predicted. Joey did his best to keep things simple, but considering just how much had happened, it was easier to summarize some points than others.

"Don't get me wrong, Wheeler, I want to believe your story," Roba admitted. "But between ancient organizations, a demon captain, and these Spirit Dragons, I'm finding it hard to put any stock in it."

"Welcome to the 'save the world' club," Tristan noted.

"Look, believe what ya want, Roba," Joey remarked, "but dere ain't no denying dat dese Neo Ghouls aren't gonna stop unless we beat em back outta town!"

Roba smiled. "You've certainly improved since Battle City," he pointed out.

Joey grinned. "I learned a lot in dose days," he replied kindly. "And I couldn't have done it without ya either. Your Jinzo got me outta so many of dose jams, I dunno if I would've made it to da finals without it!"

Roba smirked. "High praise, Wheeler, but it's not the cards that are powerful but the duelist behind them. I had to go through a lot after losing to you in Battle City, and I came out better for it."

"It's true! Our brother worked really hard!" one of the Roba brothers remarked.

"I believe it," Joey smiled. He held out his hand. "Good to have you back, Roba."

"Likewise, Joey," Roba said, clasping his hand with Joey's.

"Not to dampen the mood," Tristan piped up, "but we've still got an entire city of Neo Ghouls to deal with."

"Don't you worry," Roba remarked. "I know there are several other duelists around who should be more than capable of helping out. This city will be cleared up in no time!"

"Dat's right!" Joey agreed. "With all of us together, dese Neo Ghouls don't stand a chance!"

And so the group headed back out into the streets, ready to take on the remaining forces once more.

Keith scowled back at Matt and Andrew. Despite his field being swarmed with powerful Machines, he had been put on the back foot by the two brothers. Even with his secret ace in the hole, Skill Drain, taking away all of their most powerful abilities, the brothers persisted in standing up against his onslaught. And though they had managed to land a significant blow against him, he still had the on-field advantage. Looking over his hand once more, he pulled out one card in particular.

"I'll Set a card face-down and call it a turn," he grumbled, placing the card into his Duel Disk as it showed up on the field.

"Alright then, my move!" Andrew declared, drawing his next card. Looking over the cards in his hand, he smirked briefly. "First, let's take care of that Solidarity for a moment! I'll activate my face-down card, Disturbance of the Grave! With it, I get to treat all the cards in your Graveyard as if they were in mine! And since that means you don't have any cards in your Graveyard, you don't have any monsters for Solidarity to check, thus your monsters lose their Attack bonus!"

Machina Force (10/5400/4100 - 10/4600/4100)
Machina Fortress (7/3300/1600 - 7/2500/1600)
Commander Covington (4/1800/600 - 4/1000/600)
Fusilier Dragon, the Dual-Mode Beast (7/3600/2000 - 7/2800/2000)

So that's the other card he had Set a while back, Keith thought for a moment before outright declaring, "But your monsters are still no match for mine! They aren't strong enough to crush this onslaught!"

"I can think of one that could do it," Andrew replied back with a grin. "I'll play Ancient Hero Swiftblade (4/1800/1800) in Attack mode!"

Arising on his field, the lowly samurai warrior drew out his blade, prepared for battle. Keith smirked before laughing further.

"You really have lost it! That monster doesn't have the points to beat any of mine!"

"Oh, didn't you know? He's got a couple of special skills," Andrew continued. "And one of them is this: my Ancient Sword Slash Skill! Now when he attacks a monster, his points are doubled, and if he wins the battle, he can attack again!"

The samurai drew out his blade and assumed a pose, ready to attack.

"Go, Ancient Hero Swiftblade! Strike down his Fusilier Dragon!"

Ancient Hero Swiftblade (4/1800/1800 - 4/3600/1800)

The samurai charged forward towards the mechanical red dragon, swiftly slashing through it as its attack power doubled in an instant! And then in the next, the monstrous machine collapsed into a heap of rubble!

Keith: 1000
Matt: 4000
Andrew: 4000

Andrew blinked before squinting his eyes. "Correct me if my math's wrong, but you didn't take as much damage as I thought you would."

Keith huffed. "That's because I used a Trap of my own, Rare Metalmorph. With it attached to one of my Machines, I can give it 500 extra Attack points, mitigating the damage I was taking."

Fusilier Dragon, the Dual-Mode Beast (7/2800/2000 - 7/3300/2000)

"But that's not all you've done, punk!" Keith grabbed at a card in his hand and pulled it out. "Now that one of my DARK Machines is destroyed, I can Special Summon this from my hand! My Desperado Barrel Dragon (8/2800/2200)!"

A revamped mechanical monstrosity appeared on Keith's field, its gray metal coating shimmering beneath three massive cannons. The machine's roar echoed in the small hall they were in, its cylinders winding up behind each barrel.

"And that's not all! Thanks to Machina Armored Unit, I can bring out another DARK Machine from my Deck with less power than my Fusilier Dragon. And wouldn't you know it, I've got just the thing! My Barrel Dragon (7/2600/2200)!"

Arising next to its upgraded counterpart, the original black barreled dragon arose, its own mechanical roar echoing around. Both gun dragons stared down at the opponent's field menacingly, their sights set on the lowly samurai warrior and the white dragon.

"Guess it doesn't matter which one I attack then," Andrew commented. "I'll take out your Desperado Barrel Dragon!"

The samurai lunged forward once more, ready to strike at the gray dragon when suddenly, a spinning red discus showed up! It shot out a volley of bullets and deflected the samurai's strike!

"I ain't letting you have my monsters that easily! I activated the effect of my Spinning Spitting Dragon (2/800/400) from my hand!" Keith interrupted the move. "By discarding this bad boy, I get to flip three coins, and any time they land on Heads, I get to stop one of your attacks! And wouldn't you know it-" Keith revealed he had already flipped over three coins, two of which showed Heads. "-I've got two of em! So I get to negate two of your attacks."

"Might as well get the other one out of the way then." Andrew looked up at the dragon Matt had managed to put out onto the field. "Can't let that go to waste! Blue-Eyes, attack! White Lightning!"

The white dragon fired off a beam of light, only to have the spinning discus dragon intercept and block the attack.

"So now that that's out of the way, let's take care of some clean-up. I'll use Ancient Time Acceleration to look at the next three cards of my deck!" Andrew peeked at the cards and gave a curt nod. "Now I'll put all three of them to the bottom of my Deck so I can draw three new cards!"

Keith snorted. "A desperate move."

"Not if it gets me what I want." Andrew drew his next three cards and looked them over intently. "I'll Set two cards face-down and end my turn."

"And with that, your Disturbance is over, and my monsters get their power boost back from Solidarity!"

Machina Force (10/4600/4100 - 10/5400/4100)
Machina Fortress (7/2500/1600 - 7/3300/1600)
Commander Covington (4/1000/600 - 4/1800/600)
Desperado Barrel Dragon (8/2800/2200 - 8/3600/2200)
Barrel Dragon (7/2600/2200 - 7/3400/2200)

Keith drew his next card. "Now I'll show you what real firepower is! Machina Force, attack!"

The monster lunged forward, its powerful cannon-arms at the ready to smash down on the samurai! Then suddenly a powerful dark aura spread out from the samurai, his eye glinting in the shadows as they repelled the machination!

"Your monsters are afraid, just like you are," Andrew retorted. "My Fear of the Ancient Heroes will stop your monsters from attacking so long as I have an Ancient Hero on the field this turn! Of course that wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for your own card!"

Keith realized what Andrew was talking about, looking down at his Skill Drain Trap! That punk's right! With Skill Drain active, I can't even use Desperado Barrel Dragon's effect to try and blast away at those monsters!

Andrew now pointed his own finger out towards Keith. "Your only claim to power is to get the edge over those you couldn't beat before. You want to get stronger, but you don't understand what it means to be strong. You say you crawled out of hell, but you're even more afraid of falling back down into its depths! That fear will hold you back, no matter how much power you may have!"

"Shut it, punk!" Keith angrily slammed a card into his Duel Disk. "I'll Set a card that'll make you squirm!"

"All you are is talk, Keith, but you've never been able to walk the walk," Andrew retorted. "Strength isn't about having power enough to avoid a fall, it's about being able to accept that you may fall and having the courage to stand back up again."

"And though we've been on the back foot for much of this duel," Matt remarked, drawing his next card, "it's time for us to fight back in full! And it starts with this: my Dragon's Mirror Spell card!"

A golden framed mirror rose up from behind Matt, its glimmering purple glass shining on the field!

"With this, I can fuse a Dragon Fusion monster with monsters on my field or in my Graveyard," Matt explained. "So now I fuse the three Blue-Eyes White Dragons together, calling forth the ultimate dragon!"

The Blue-Eyes on the field rose into the mirror, where two other Blue-Eyes were reflected back at it. The three dragons merged together, and from the mirror's surface, their fused form crawled out and roared onto the field, its three heads crying out triumphantly.

"Behold, the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon (12/4500/3800)!"

The monster roared down onto the field, towering over the other machines! Its power surged all the more as the ancient draconic temple empowered it even further!

Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon (12/4500/3800 - 12/4900/4200)

Keith gritted his teeth. "You may have a powerful monster now, but it's still no match for my strongest monsters! This duel's not over yet, punk!"

"Actually, the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon is the strongest monster on the field," Matt remarked. "Especially once I activate my next card: Stamping Destruction!"

"What?!"

"Now with a Dragon on my field, I can destroy a Spell or Trap card and deal 500 damage to its controller! And the only way to show you how fragile your strength truly is, is by decimating the power you already have! So now I'll destroy Solidarity!"

The magic card spewed forth a fiery blast that eradicated Keith's Spell card, incinerating his Life Points as his monsters lost their attack boost!

Keith: 500
Matt: 4900
Andrew: 4000

Machina Force (10/5400/4100 - 10/4600/4100)
Machina Fortress (7/3300/1600 - 7/2500/1600)
Commander Covington (4/1800/600 - 4/1000/600)
Desperado Barrel Dragon (8/3600/2200 - 8/2800/2200)
Barrel Dragon (7/3400/2200 - 7/2600/2200)

"And that's not all I'm about to do," Matt continued. "Now I'll activate Dimension Fusion by paying 2000 of my Life Points!"

Keith: 200
Matt: 2000
Andrew: 4000

"So now I can bring back the monsters I banished for Dragon's Mirror!"

"What?!"

"Come forth, Blue-Eyes White Dragons!"

Flying out from a dimensional rift, the three dragons rose up alongside their three-headed counterpart, the swarm of dragons roaring out over the field! As each one arrived, the ancient temple granted them even more power, further strengthening the onsluaght!

Blue-Eyes White Dragon x3 (8/3000/2500 - 8/3400/2900)

"No way!" Keith yelped. "You gotta be kidding me!"

"Go, Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon! Wipe out Machina Force with Neutron Blast!"

The three heads aimed towards a central point, charging up a powerful blue energy beam before launching it in full force at the ultimate machine, destroying it in one go! The machine toppled over as Keith held up his arm to deflect the blow!

Keith: 200
Matt: 4000
Andrew: 4000

"Now go, Blue-Eyes! Eliminate Commander Covington!"

One of the dragons blew away the red commander with ease!

"Next up, let's take care of that Barrel Dragon!"

"NO! I won't let you!" Keith shouted out. "I activate Interdimensional Matter Transporter, banishing my Fortress until the end of the turn!"

Just as the dragon charged up its attack, the massive tank disappeared into a wormhole, removing itself from the field.

"Alright then, let's try this," Matt said. "Since attacking Machina Fortress would just trigger its destruction effect, I'll have the third Blue-Eyes destroy Desperado Barrel Dragon!"

Another dragon fired a beam of white lightning towards the armed mechanical dragon!

"I activate Negate Attack!"

And just like that, the energy burst was absorbed inside of a vortex, stopping the assault in its tracks.

"So now what, Keith?" Matt asked. "You don't have many options left. I'll summon Vandalizing Dragon (4/1900/0) and end my turn."

As the punk dragon appeared on Matt's field, Keith drew into his next card as his Barrel Dragon returned to his field. He looked up at the three dragons looming over him, their blue eyes staring down at him menacingly. He had built up a field of unstoppable machines, and in a matter of turns, now he was the one at a disadvantage. He couldn't believe it! He wouldn't believe it!

And yet as he looked over his hand of cards, Keith realized he didn't have anything.

"I…I…I'll Set two cards face-down, switch my monsters to Defense, and end my turn," he finally admitted.

Machina Fortress (7/2500/1600 - 7/2500/1600)
Desperado Barrel Dragon (8/2800/2200 - 8/2800/2200)
Barrel Dragon (7/2600/2200 - 7/2600/2200)

I can't do much right now, but these cards should do the trick, Keith thought to himself. When my monsters get attacked by theirs, I can use Mirror Force to completely wipe them out and take them out on the next turn. And even if they manage to find a way past that and destroy my monsters in battle, I can use Time Machine to bring one of them back to keep up my defenses. Either way, it'll be the end of the line for these punks!

"Looks like this game's almost over then," Andrew said, reaching out to draw his next card. A pulse of energy raced through him, his eyes widening for a moment. He looked down at his deck, knowing what was to come. It was here - it was time.

"I draw!"

Andrew took a look and saw his next card, and he knew what to do. "I now sacrifice the three Blue-Eyes White Dragons!"

"What?!"

Keith stumbled back for a moment, shocked as the three dragons rose up and flew towards the ceiling, merging together above their heads. Even Matt was surprised by this - he didn't expect it to come about! Andrew held up the card high as clouds gathered around the museum, lightning crashing from the heavens. And then, gently descending from above, a large golden sphere slowly dropped down into the museum, melting through the ceiling like a phantom, its radiance blinding above the field.

"I-impossible!" Keith yelled out as he witnessed first-hand the power of a god.

Andrew's eyes lit up for a moment as he looked at the monstrous orb. Then as though he knew what to do, he held up his hands and began to chant.

"Great beast of the sky,
hear now my cry,
Emerge from within thy orb of light,
And bring victory to me in this fight!

From across the desert sands aglow,
Unleash your power upon my foe!
Reveal your secrets buried deep within
And so together we shall win!

Now humble us here in this game,
Appear now as I call out thy name!
Winged Dragon of Ra!"

The orb began to shift about, parts of it opening up as light emerged from the sphere itself. First a long golden tail unraveled itself, followed by a pair of wings spreading out to each side. Its arms shifted outwards like mechanical pieces, safely tucked away inside. Then beneath a golden arch, the head rose up, the red eyes of the god glowing beneath a blue gem in its forehead. Its beak-like mouth opened wide, crying out into the exhibit hall, echoing all throughout the museum! Outside, thunder and lightning crashed overhead, drawing the attention of anyone nearby towards the location!

"What's with da thunderstorm?" Joey asked aloud, seeing the storm clouds gathered above.

From another part of town, Yugi and Tea looked on at the unusual weather phenomenon. Yugi could sense it though - he had faced off against the Winged Dragon of Ra before. He knew the feeling of it appearing now.

In the museum hall, the golden dragon finally landed behind Andrew, staring down at Keith's field. Keith looked on with horror, a dread unlike any other. Memories flooded back to him of his time possessed by a former wielder of the god card.

"No…no! NO! I won't let you have that monster!" Keith remarked. "My Skill Drain is still in play, so your card does nothing! It won't be able to do anything!"

Andrew merely looked back, the powers of the sun god running over him. "Your Skill Drain does nothing," he declared. "This isn't just another monster - this is a god! And in the face of it, your Trap card is useless!"

"What?!"

"The Winged Dragon of Ra gains its power from the monsters sacrificed to summon it! And with three Blue-Eyes White Dragons as tribute, the Winged Dragon has a strength of 9000!"

The golden dragon cried out as the souls of the three Blue-Eyes merged into its body, granting it their combined strength!

The Winged Dragon of Ra (10/?/? - 10/9000/7500)

"Next I call upon the power of Ra," Andrew continued, his Life Points draining out.

Keith: 200
Matt: 4900
Andrew: 3000

"By paying 1000 Life Points, I can destroy one of your monsters," Andrew explained. "And so Ra now destroys your Barrel Dragon!"

The sun god charged up its arch, the sides of its head glowing as it charged a powerful orb of light and heat before incinerating the black-barreled machine!

"And now I pay another 1000 Life Points to destroy Desperado Barrel Dragon!"

Keith: 200
Matt: 4900
Andrew: 2000

Again, the golden dragon fired a shining orb of light down at the gray machine, melting it down into nothing! Keith shuddered and stumbled as his monsters were taken out one by one.

"And now I pay 1000 Life Points again! Destroy Machina Fortress!"

Keith: 200
Matt: 4900
Andrew: 1000

Once more, the sun dragon shot down its orb of destruction, causing the tank to explode into flames and disintegrate into nothing! Keith covered himself with his arms to avoid the blast, then he waved it off.

"If you think I'm out just because of your so-called god, I've got news for you, punk!" he retorted. "My Machina Megaform in the Graveyard's effect activates when Machina Fortress gets destroyed, letting me remove it from play to bring Megaform back in its place!"

The Fortress card emerged from his Graveyard, but as he reached back for the Megaform, a paper seal locked it into place! Keith recoiled in shock before looking up and seeing the samurai warrior had its arm extended, as though it had thrown the seal. Behind it, a Spell card was revealed!

"My Ancient Heroes' Seal will put a stop to that," Andrew continued. "With it, I'm able to negate the effects of a card that activates while I control an Ancient Hero monster. So your Megaform is staying right where it is."

"But…then that means…" Keith's eyes widened as he stared back up at the sun dragon.

"This duel is done." Andrew drew back his arm and pointed it to Keith! "Now, Winged Dragon of Ra, attack! Blaze Cannon!"

One last time, the golden dragon charged up its power, the arch glowing behind its head! The raw power of the sun merged together in front of its mouth into a massive fireball! Keith stared at it, blinded by the intense light! And then the dragon shot down the fireball, and Keith cried out as it surrounded him, burning away at his Life Points!

Keith: 0
Matt: 4900
Andrew: 1000

Keith fell back onto the floor, utterly devastated. He had been totally defeated.

Matt looked over at Andrew, the firm stare of his brother trained on Keith's unconscious body as the sun dragon cried out one last time before disappearing. Andrew blinked for a moment, and then he took a knee, catching his breath. Matt rushed over to him and checked on him.

"You okay?" he asked, genuinely concerned.

Andrew chuckled back at him. "I'm alright," he replied. "Didn't realize using a god card would be that intense."

Matt briefly smiled. "You did good."

Andrew raised a finger. "We did good."

The brothers took a moment to look over at Keith, still lying prone on the ground.

"What're we gonna do with him?" Andrew asked.

"Leave him be," Matt replied. "If anything, Kaiba and the local authorities can take care of him and the Neo Ghouls."

Suddenly, a glow emerged from Matt's Duel Disk! The brothers looked over at it as Matt pulled out his deck, looking it over. His eyes widened, and a broad smile spread across his face.

"The Spirit Dragons!" he remarked. "The ritual!"

Andrew nearly jumped up with excitement. "We can find the location of the last one!"

Matt looked at the Spirit Dragons glowing in his hands eagerly. The light from the dragons grew brighter, enveloping the brothers in their glow. For a moment, there was nothing but a blinding brightness. Then they saw it.

It was an ancient temple, far and away from civilization. They saw the ancient kingdom of Babylon, the sight of the Tigres and Euphrates river. Then they saw the ocean, vast and expansive. Then they saw the temple flying above the waters before sinking below the waves. Then they saw another temple, this one sinking into the desert sands. They saw flashes of civilization far out in the distance but never close enough to find it. Then they saw themselves, Matt holding out the Spirit Dragons, and then-

"That's it!"

Matt's exclamation came as they found themselves back inside the museum. Andrew blinked for a moment, almost confused.

"Wait…are you telling me we have to go back to Babylon?" he asked.

"Not just back, back with the Spirit Dragons," Matt replied. "We know where they're at! The temple must be where they've resided all this time, and only by having all six of the Spirit Dragons could we reveal its location and summon the entrance!"

"But…why were there two?"

Matt's excitement paused for a moment, his smile waning for a moment. There were two temples they had seen in their vision, weren't there? So if one of them was for the Trinity…was there another temple? But then why was it out at sea? And wouldn't that imply there was a third temple? But then why didn't the third appear? Questions began racing through his mind, and he shook his head as though to rattle them out of his brain.

"We should regroup with the others first," he said. "There'll be time for questions on the way there."

And with that, Matt turned and headed out of the exhibit. Andrew looked back at his brother, then back towards the unconscious Keith lying on the ground, and then finally he followed his brother out the door.

Neither of them saw the lingering shadow slink into the darkness from Keith's body.
