It was the smell that work her, not the nearly blinding white light, the beeping of machines pumping chemicals in and out of her body or the sound of voices just a few feet away. Opening her eyes slowly, she wrinkled her nose at that overwhelmingly clean smell that hospitals always had. The young woman went rigid with alarm and tried not to alert the doctor and nurses hospital? She thought what's happened? Why would I be in a hospital? Where is Mama? Papa?!
The woman had no memory of where she was, even remembering who she was seemed a challenge. There was a man, she remembered, a handsome man and a woman with red hair, the woman screwed her eyes shut as she strained to remember who those people were.
The beeping of her heart monitor began to race and she tried to calm herself down but it was too late, the doctor had noticed that she was finally awake and came to check on her "как ты себя чувствуешь?" he asked and then translated "how are you feeling?"
The woman didn't respond but eyed him cautiously
"Вы бы предпочли русский или английский?" he asked "would you prefer Russian or English?"
She had no idea why he was saying the same thing twice but if it got him to stop, she answered that she would like him to speak English.
The nurse had come over now with a tray of food and offered it to her, she began to eat suddenly realising that she was very hungry. The doctor checked her eyes with a small light and made her follow his finger asking her if she knew her name and where she was "my…name is…I think it's…A-Anya?" she asked
"Correct. Do you know where you are?" he stopped fawning over her and then sat down in a chair
"I'm guessing there was an accident. Are my Mama and Papa here? I would like to see them"
Something in the doctors face changed ever so slightly, it was like he was expecting her to ask but wished that she didn't, he got up again and held her hand "I'll get your Papa for you. In the meantime I would like you to rest as much as you can" he smiled again and gave her hand a gentle squeeze. Something in that friendly gesture made Anya smile back, small butterflies fluttered in her stomach.
Anya rolled her eyes, yes the doctor was cute but after she got out of here she probably would never see him again, so why bother?
The door to her room opened as the doctor left, he looked back and gave her another warm smile, then another man came in; immediately Anya felt very uncomfortable. This man was not like the doctor, he a suit and looked business like, yet also very dangerous. He didn't at all look the part of a father. The man sat in the same chair the doctor sat in, when he reached for her hand Anya snatched it away yet didn't know why.
The man looked at the machines, poked them a little and then went to look at her chart. He thumbed through the graphs, numbers and written information but didn't seem surprised by any of it, he sighed, looking defeated, and went to sit by her again.
Anya tried to take her hand away but he grabbed it quickly this time and held it firmly "I'm so happy you're alright, sweetheart" he went on when Anya didn't say anything "you're going to be fine"
"Where are my parents? I want to see them now" Anya said firmly
"So" he sighed to himself and looked away "…square one" he said more to himself than to her
"What?" Anya asked and the man's hand gripped hers tighter
"You know, you were promising. When I first saw you, you seemed like all the others, except for your episodes of course. Oh they were a nuisance, you could slip into one for many days believing this or that about who was around you or raving stories about me. They were a problem until I found one that I liked, a personality that I could use"
Anya felt fear rising in her now as he spoke, was he really talking about her? It seemed like he was talking about a horrible murdering maniac!
"Yes, she was what I wanted. She would come out and everything would pay off. All the training, the acting would all come into play. She was perfect, take any orders without question" his voice took on a deadly smooth tone, she felt like she heard it before, it consumed her "she would do anything I wanted" his hand found her thigh and gradually scaling upwards "and I want her back!"
He then gripped her thigh in a vice-like grip, making her gasp in pain "You are pathetic! I'm going to get her back, I have almost perfected the serum–"
Anya silenced him with a swift kick to the head and swung off her bed, her mind having all these thoughts she never had before: martial arts moves she didn't remember learning and working out an escape route of the building. Her body moved of its own accord, when the man came at her she kicked him and punched him until he was on the ground, looking up at her in awe and bewilderment. Anya made for the door, her hospital gown allowing her the movement she needed to run quickly and silently.
Once she was through the door she stood there, where was the doctor? She knew that doctors were meant to help people; if anyone needed help now it was her. Blindly choosing a route she ran, aware the man, for some reason she knew as 'Father', was running behind her, slower now because of her attack.
A door ahead of her opened, a white coat stepped into the hallway and saw her, Anya reached out her hand silently begging them to help her, to protect her. It was the doctor, she could have cried thanks to the heavens as she came face to face with him and asked him to please help her
"Anya? Are you alright?!" he asked "what's happened?"
Anya spoke in a rush "Idon'tknowwhereIamorwhoIreallyam! There'samanaftermeandI'mscared! Please help me! Don't let him get me!" she was almost hysterical.
The doctor heard running footsteps and held her, pushing her half behind him as his boss, Ivan Vanko, came around the corner. Anya gripped her protector tight and tried to pull him back not wanting him to be hurt "Sir, I…" he wavered
"Andrei, good you have her" Ivan caught his breathe "just a minor setback. It will be fine. Just bring her back to the healing ward and we can get back to work" he made it sound like it was no big deal
"NO! PLEASE NO! DON'T MAKE ME GO BACK WITH HIM!" Anya held the doctor desperately as Ivan came forward and tried to pry her away "PLEASE NO!"
Anya's screams tore through him like a hot knife, Andrei felt like dying right then and there, he knew of her condition – Multiple Personality Syndrome – and had tried to work with Ivan in not finding a cure but subduing other personalities and bringing just one to the surface, to make that personality the main one. Andrei hated what he had been doing to her, hated putting her through test after test and trying out knew drugs to 'help' her.
A/N: Andrei is a doctor and forced to work for Ivan Vanko. He hates his job but he can't do anything against Vanko or he will be killed. Since working with Anya he has begun to fall for her.
Andrei fought the urge to fight him off, he held Anya and whispered that everything was alright "Please Anya, trust me. You're alright now" he gulped down the lump forming in his throat as he reached for the syringe in his pocket.
Anya tried still backing away from Ivan, her pleading eyes never leaving Andrei, "Please no, I don't want to go with him!"
"I know, everything is going to be alright" he pierced her skin with the needle and watched, his heart breaking, as Anya came to realise what he had done. Her eyes went wide, she gripped him tighter and began to scream hysterically at him. She tore away from him and spun around to run but the drug was already taking effect, she was getting drowsy and couldn't hold herself up. Andrei caught her before she hit the ground and whispered that he was sorry. So sorry.
Ivan took Anya from him and smiled, thanking him for his service "She was doing better, this serum was working"
"Yes, but she is strong. There hasn't been a serum we have given her that her mind and body can't break down. I'm telling you sir, I don't think I can make a serum that strong without killing her or making her into a mindless drone!" Andrei raised his voice "what you want is impossible!"
Ivan raised a concealed gun to Andrei "You had better hope not. Work all night and day if you have to I know this can work. You will make it work. Understand?"
Andrei nodded weakly and watched as Anya was carried off by that monster, his heart hurting.
A/N: WOW! Where did this come from!? I really liked this chapter! I wanted to bring Anya back and give her a little bit of background. I started off hating her but now, I am feeling sympathy for her since it wasn't the real her. WOW again. I can't wait to write more about this!
