He couldn't believe his eyes. But she was sitting right in front of him, wasn't she? Was this all just a cruel trick? yeah a joke, that's what it was, a joke. Any minute now her heads going to snap up and she's going to yell 'gotcha! But her head wasn't snapping up. It was lolling off to the side. And the bruises and blood everywhere told him a more gruesome story. Pushing aside his shock he sprang forward from his spot at the door and went to her side to which got straight down to his knees.
Oh god, what have they done to you? Slowly and with a shaking hand he picked up Jamie's limp wrist and felt for her pulse. Not to soon he felt tears coming to his eyes blurring his vision slightly. He felt nothing, it took all his might to contain the sob that was rising in his throat. But he didn't let go, he held on to her wrist and waited patiently. I know Jamie, she wouldn't die like this, right? Just then in the seconds it took him to recount all the good and the bad times he had with Jamie that he'd cherish forever he felt her pulse flutter. It was weak and inconsistent, but it was better than nothing. He smiled as if he'd just met his long lost parents and he slowly, but carefully, got up and slid his arm under her legs and wrapped his arm around her right shoulder. Her head lolled backward and only now did he notice how hurt she was. She had slash marks all over her shirt and her bones were almost showing in some areas and her face was almost unrecognizable. She moaned in pain almost instantaneously when he picked her up but she made no movement once so ever to stop him or to lift her head. So he picked up her head for her and propped it on his shoulder. Only then did she move if only to nuzzle her head in closer to his neck but he still took it as encouragement and continued to turn around and move out the door.
Alec moved fast but carefully as he did not want to get caught but he also didn't want Jamie in more pain than she was already in. When he made to the door once more most of the panicking agents were gone and he began to worry that he wouldn't be able to slip under their noses since there were so few left. But then he remembered the last time he was in this situation with the Wattersons, except this time it was Jamie who had taken the beating, a beating she hadn't escaped as soon. Instead of going straight like last time he went left trying to get to the staircase the Wattersons had used quicker. He half walked half ran the entire way down the hall until he reached the all too familiar floor to ceiling windows then he went right. There was no one in this hall at the time so he decided to speed up into a jog, Jamie whimpered at the increased movement. It hurt him to know she was hurting as much as she was but if he slowed down he could be caught by a passing by agent. So, he kept moving.
He reached the end of the hallway in a short amount of time and he turned right again to see the stairwell and the elevator the Wattersons and him had used. Slowly he jogged to the stairwell and opened the door the same upon arrival as to not alert anyone. He walked down the stairs wincing every time he took a step as he was worried he'd hurt Jamie. When he reached the bottom he swung open the door with one and ran through the back of the "Lobby" and pushed open the handle-less door that led to the receptionists desk. He lifted up the divider table that let the receptionist leave and walked out the front double doors looking at Jamie once again as he realized how lucky he was to leave without anyone noticing. He was ripped from his thoughts when more than thirty blinding lights accompanied by guns being cocked and aimed, aimed at him.
He immediately covered his eyes with one hand at the sudden intense light. When his eye finally did adjust he covered Jamie from the light by hunching over her slightly. Not a single man or woman among the mass faltered with their guns at this act of protection and this made Alec soon realize, they meant business. He prepared for the worst when suddenly a car came barreling down the road causing the agents to scatter. Many of them yelped in surprise and practically flung themselves to the side of the road. The familiar family wagon, as he soon found out, came to an immediate stop in front of him and he wasted no time in savagely ripping open the back door and climbing in with Jamie still in his arms.
The car lurched forward when he was just closing the door and only then did he realize who was driving. It was Richard. Alec silently prayed to god that they would live to see another day. Nichole was in the passenger seat hanging on to the dashboard and from the looks of it, praying just the same.
Alec put his head down as a hail of gunfire hit the back of the car and broke the back window. He gripped Jamie tightly as to not let her roll out of the seat. A small squeak came from the other side of the back seat and he noticed that Jamie's limp body was crushing, Anais and Gumball? Darwin was also there except he was being crushed against the window. He was just about to yell at Nichole and Richard for their neglect for their children's safety when even more bullets hit the car. Alec quickly picked up and set Jamie on the floor of the car so Anais and Gumball could breath. Then he swung his SKS from his shoulder and turned around to perch the barrel on the back seat. He looked out the back window and found there were two black SUV's close behind.
Making a quick decision he fired at the front tires and soon heard a couple satisfyingly loud pops. The SUV's slowed to a stop instantaneously. Alec sighed a quick breath of relief and looked toward the now pale family.
"...you guys alright?" he asked tentatively and Nichole looked back at him with a pained expression.
"Did you have to fire that gun? My ears are still ringing." she said which earned a murmur of agreement from everyone except Jamie who was still unconscious.
"Sorry." he responded sheepishly. He looked back up from the ground which had seemed so interesting a moment ago and looked at everyone. "What are you guys doing here though? And Nichole, why in the world would you allow you kids to come?" he asked bluntly to which she was thrown back slightly but responded quick enough.
"Anais told you were alive after a raid by that awful man, Tess." she began but from the first few words Alec was already shooting Anais a glare; immediately she shrank back and Alec looked back to Nichole who continued, "When he left we got in the family car and immediately left to stake out the headquarters or whatever it's called. And i really didn't want to just leave Anais, Gumball, and Darwin home alone, so they came too. Besides Wattersons stick together, and that means no one is left behind." she finished triumphantly looking toward Alec. All the other Wattersons were smirking slightly at the reference to their family motto.
"ok, I understand, but that would mean you've been watching the building since i came in. Why didn't you rush to me when you saw me?" he asked curiously looking at Nichole as Richard drove on in an empty highway he must have turned off to when Alec wasn't paying attention.
"We thought you had a plan?" she said looking at Alec questioningly now.
"I didn't have a well thought out plan, but it turned out well. I guess..." He answered looking down at Jamie who was sprawled on the floor.
For the first time Nichole seemed to notice who came with him as she gasped in surprise, "Is she alright?!" She asked a hand over her mouth. Alec carefully picked her up in the cradle he had before as to keep her from lying on the uncomfortable floor carpeting.
"I don't know...from the look of it she might not make it..." he said ruefully sating the fact he had to come to terms with. "We'll have to find somewhere safe...so we can get her medical attention."
Nichole frowned and looked forward out the front window which was littered with bullet holes. "I'm definitely sure we can't go back home," she started thinking deeply. Secretly Alec liked that she had said 'home' instead of 'our home', as if everything was shared between them all. Just then Alec remembered and from all the commotion had almost forgot. "..I honestly have no clue-"
"Wait! I know exactly where we can go!" he exclaimed.
"Where?" she asked looking at him as if he hd all the answers.
"Well, first I need tell you all something." he said glancing between them all. He tried to find the right words that describe his relationship with them.
"Well, spit it out! I'm a pinch tired after looking at a single space for five hours!" Gumball -with rings around his eyes- growled to which Darwin answered pale faced.
"Really? Because I don't think I'll ever sleep again.."
"Boys! Let him speak!" she shushed to which they quieted immediately.
"Well I'm, by blood, a Watterson." croaked Alec as he gulped hoping for a positive response. There was utter shock around the car as Alec's words sunk in.
"H-how?" asked Nichole looking at him directly in the eyes.
"Uhm, well, the names on my birth-tank said the DNA donors were a Frank and Elizabeth Watterson.." He answered looking down and not meeting her gaze. At this Nichole set her jaw and said,
"Right, I'll call Frank and we'll have him set up a bed-"
"No! No, I-I want it to be face to face the first time, they uh, see me." he said obviously covering for the fact that he was terrified of facing the person who gave him life. To him that would be like looking death in the face, he's done that already, no way would he want to do it again. Well, unprepared anyway.
Alec looked at Anais, Gumball, and Darwin; shocked wasn't really the word that fit the looks on their faces. All were shocked of course but they also looked as if they were getting a million dollars. Anais, though, on the other hand looked ashamed, as if she should have known all along that they were cousins. Alec silently looked toward Richard then and the only expression he showed was a wide innocent smile as he drove the car along the highway. Suddenly Richard said, "That really does explain a lot.." A, still shocked, murmur of agreement came from the entire family and that was that, no one said a word the rest of the ride as Richard silently drove to their new destination.
Alec didn't sleep, the entire ride he thought of what his parents may be like plus he had to focus on Jamie's wounds; making sure they didn't get worse. Nichole handed him a first aid kit after he had asked if there were any medical supplies, he wrapped up her wounds the best he could and he silently prayed for her to make it. By the time they got to- who Alec guessed ws Nichole's brothers house the only two that were up were Alec and Richard.
Richard slowly shook Nichole and she immediately woke,
"huh what!" realizing were she was she shook her head and looked back to her kids and said slightly above a whisper "Gumball, Darwin, Anais wake up we're here." they only groaned slightly and nuzzled into each other more. Nichole sighed and was about to raise her voice when Alec spoke up,
"Nichole? Why don't we just carry them in?" He said questioningly, honestly he didn't want to break them apart because the sight was heartwarming. Gumball's head was leaning on Darwin's While Darwin's was on the window, Anais was curled up in a ball between the two. Nichole smiled and so did Alec. He took a deep breath and opened the car door, with Jamie still in his arms, and climbed out. Nichole and Richard did the same and shut the door silently along with Alec and Richard. The trio walked up cobble stone steps to a light green three story suburban house. They were on the outskirts of Elmore; noticeably because the houses were far apart.
It was nighttime, he wasn't so sure they'd be up. He looked at Nichole but she was sill looking straight ahead at the green house, she looked as though she was dreading the moment. Alec wondered why until Richard reached to press the doorbell and Alec noticed his own erratic heartbeat. Richard's finger connected with the button and a musical tune rang out from inside. He had to press the button a few more times but soon the door swung open and a pink cat in floral pajamas stood in the doorway..
Notes~ its been a while and I'm sorry for that but internet is hard to come by for me. We may get a new provider but my parents don't care much. I'm also using a laptop now so hopefully the chapters will have less spelling errors. Plus a shout out to Lexboss and Laengruk10001 for letting me use their characters. And I'm going to try to gt to everyone's stories, I've really missed reading stories on this site...Read & Review, until next time!
