Contrary to the fact that I got up early at times when most reasonable people should have been sleeping, I quite liked to sleep. Not because of the fact that it was deemed 'lazy' in this house, but because it was my alone time. A time for me to use my imagination without limits or societies ropes to tell me what's right and what's wrong. If I wanted to dream about chocolate covered lima beans, I could. If it were unicorns, I could. (Not that I would dream of them in particular. They just seemed like the perfect murder weapon and get away vehicle.)

In my dreams, I could faintly hear the others. (Although, by the time that morning rolls around, I forget them all together due to the fact that I'm either woken up by quake-shaking children or tuna breath.) While Nana dreamed of the days where she gets to make and have dinner with the entire family at her table, her son dreams more or less of a place that's full of nothing. No fires or famine, or scary hitman babies yelling at you. (Mind you, that guy turns up in his mid morning nightmares. I could never get a hold of Reborns, which made me wonder if he dreamed at all.)

Today's morning started off like the usual, with me waking up between six and seven am, and Al sitting beside my face. Once, he sat on my chest too hard and I ended up dreaming that I was seriously drowning. He laughed in my face when I told him that but ever since, he instead took up the space that was left on my pillow. I think it was his way of compensating.

He murmured good morning and immediately buggered off downstairs after I had opened the hatch to the kitchen, where he smelled Nana's breakfast cooking. I would have followed him mindlessly, following where my nose would have wanted to go, but I decided to change first, since I could hear the sounds of voices echoing downstairs. Sensually, I breathed and sat up, blocking all of the noise out. My bones creaked as I stood, peeling off my pyjama top and bottoms. It was still autumn, but it will turn into winter soon, so my intuition told me to start using my thicker pair of pyjamas.

I kept my clothes on the other side of the room, in a large chest. That way, I wouldn't have to travel downstairs to the spare cabinet again and again.

It feels like it's going to be a good day. Should I wear shorts, or some jeans? I don't want Nana to get worried about all the bruises I got from freaken die hard Hibari. I think jeans will do for today.

I took out the jeans and threw them on the bed, along with a peach t-shirt and a bra. Today, I figured, would be a warm day that would be covered by some wind. Therefore I s-

"HUUUAAAAAGGGHH!"

Out of instinct, my hand reached out to cover the top of my chest, but from the surprisement I'd heard, it's fair game to say that it probably wouldn't have done me much good. I heard him fall over as he backed up and then, stumbling as he got back up.

Without turning, I looked over my shoulder to see Dino with his back to mine, his hand up over his eyes, his elbow shaking. His thoughts were all jumbled. But the ones I could thread together made my face heat up. My chest tightened and my throat clamped up.

"Mama told me t-to c-come and get you." He stuttered, still covering his eyes."W-Where is your bra!?"

"O-Over there." I replied, pointing to the mattress.

"THEN WHY HAVEN'T YOU GOT IT O-ON?!"

"You know I don't wear that to bed, numbskull. that would be extremely uncomfortable." I paused, realising my voice had come back and when I did, the realisation hit me like a ten ton bag of cement; right in the face. "WHY THE HECK ARE YOU STILL HERE?! GET OUT!"

He cringed and ran straight out, thumping down onto the second story floor, not even bothering to use the stepladder. I stood there for a minute, cringing in my own embarrassment and then got changed, trying to occupy myself with other things.

So why was my heart quivering, when I wasn't bothered by it at all?

I went down to the kitchen, just in time find Dino cowering in the hall as Reborn walked precariously towards him. His fedora sat low on his head, so that in its shadow, his eyes were covered.

"You saw her getting changed, didn't you?" He asked, in a menacing voice. I rolled my eyes. "You little perv."

Dino shook his head furiously, his arms waving in the air. Was that blood coming out of his nose? "N-no, no! Y-You're mistaken Reborn! I swear I-"

"Oh come off it Reborn. It's not a big deal, honestly." I said, rubbing my eyes.

"But he never apologised for it, did he?" Reborn asked, not needing an answer or confirmation from me because we could both see the scene clearly playing in Dino's mind.

"No."

"Then I'll take care of this pipsqueak while Dame-Tsuna wakes up. You should go see Iemitsu. He's waiting for you on the patio." Reborn turned his back to me. "You shouldn't keep people waiting."

I immediately straightened and my face became staunch as he spoke. I shot Dino a concerned look and walked back down the hallway. I said my good mornings to Nana and the children, who were eating happily, before sliding the door open and sitting next to boss.

He was donned in his jumpsuit. He and I both thought it looked the tiniest bit ghastly, although he didn't mind it as much as it bugged me.

"Phillipa, good morning."

"Morning sir." I replied, picking my words with care. "Is there a reason why you called me here?"

"I'm a bit annoyed with you Phillipa. Do you know why?"

I gulped silently.

"It's a bit cold tonight, isn't it Kyoya?" Dino asked, digging his cold hands in the pockets of the warm coat I gave him. He never seemed to leave the house without it. Dino, Kyoya and I were on the roof of the school. We had been on the roof for the entire day, waiting for the sun to set.

Well, actually Dino was the one that had waited impatiently. Kyoya and I battled it out quite fiercely, till Dino called time out. I had won three out of the five spars, only sustaining minor to moderate bruises on my arms and torso and a nasty cut to my bottom lip.

"Hmph." Kyoya plainly disagreed with Dino's comment and kept his distance from us both, leaning on the barrier. The light from the arena below shone up, reflecting off of Dino's blond hair.

"Not really." I admitted. Although, mind you, I was wrapped up in some pretty warm clothes, so the wind didn't affect me as much as it did for Dino. But it was his fault that he was so cold. All he wanted to wear was only a t-shirt and trackpants, being a macho man and all of that mumbo jumbo. "Hey, it's starting!"

~o0o~

"Yeah..." I answered sheepishly, not looking him directly in the eyes.

"Then you know why I'm putting you in indefinite lockdown."

"W-What?!"

"I asked you to look after the family, not sit on your ass and watch the trials. They're not something enjoyable." He paused, thinking that some of the members in the Varia taskforce would definitely argue against his case. "Which is why I'm banning you from visiting the arenas, okay?"

I sighed silently, thinking this over. I really wanted to watch them fight, since I hadn't seen most of either of the side's fighting skills. Ryohei was interesting last night. Lussy-chan got what was coming to him anyway, with how he was acting. I believed there was a time to fight and a time to flirt, and to me they didn't go together. (However, I can say that I had a good laugh at Ryohei's reaction. I don't think the poor kid has ever been flirted with a guy, let alone a girl yet.)

"Yes sir."

He nodded in a concluding fashion and took a sip of the coffee that Nana had brewed only minutes before, not wanting to touch on the matter anymore. Steam sifted from the top of the cup, enchanting my mind. Being yelled at was the last thing anyone wanted to have to endure in the morning. The smell of the coffee made my stomach grumble, so I bashfully excused myself and sauntered back to the kitchen, slumping in my seat.

Reborn drank his coffee slowly, looking up to read my mind. I sunk lower and then straightened up as Nana placed an omelette in front of me. I thanked her and reached for the ketchup.

"That bad, huh?"

I sighed and nodded, frowning as the red liquid squirted erratically from the bottom of the bottle. I made a note to tell Nana that she was running low on the stuff.

"You got told off!?" Dino guessed, feeling guilty. Tsuna gave me a concerned look and shuffled off to school, with toast in his hand. I shrugged their concerns away.

"I got banned from watching any further matches. It's a pity, since I enjoyed watching it but there's nothing I can do."

"That's your own fault kiddo."

I stuck my fork into the cooked egg. "I know."

I'm sorry for asking you to come, Dino said in his mind, guiltily apologising as he dug into his own share of the breakfast. It would be another ten minutes before the rest of the children awoke.

~o0o~

As soon as I told Nana that the ketchup bottle was running low on the sweet stuff, she sent me to the supermarket with a list stretching as long as the California coastline. She was in an absolute daze of innocent smugness and confessed that she didn't have the time or enough people to look after the children to do it on her own.

I immediately refused, at first. After that telling off incident with Iemistu, I had to admit that he was right. I had come here to do a job, not to play around, sitting on my ass all day. (Okay, maybe the last one was slightly true.). My main priority was the safety of the Tenth Vongola's family and close friends, as well as the wellbeing and treatment of them during the day.

Reborn, it seemed, thought that they would be alright. After all, they had the worlds greatest hitman accompanying them everywhere. In short, I had been kicked out of the house without an option to stand my ground.

But heck, I wasn't going to go alone. I hated walking around by myself, in an unfamiliar surrounding. It was a contrasting characteristic of mine that was a stark difference to the fact that I could adapt to places well.

So, in the end, I didn't go on my own. I dragged the whole family along in the bandwagon to the supermarket.

Nana walked down the street with a smile on her face as I-pin and Lambo ran ahead of us. Not too far though because I didn't want them out of my sight, so I had to bribe Lambo with candy to behave on this trip.

Fuuta, who decided that it was too hot to wear a sweater today, held on tightly to Nana's left hand as well as having my right hand to grip onto. Reborn plodded along beside Nana. I was the closest to the road, since she didn't want any of the children to be near the route of passing cars. Al wandered behind, stopping every so often to sniff a lampost or to poke his nose at a random dandelion that grew out of a random crack in the concrete.

We reached the Family plus supermarket just twenty minutes after leaving the house. Namimori was one of those towns where everybody knew everybody; the houses were compact, jammed wall to wall and the talk of the town fluttered through the ears of everyone very quickly, just like the wind.

"Alrighty, let's start!" Nana proclaimed, wheeling out a trolley from the trolley stand, which was at the front of the store, just beside the automatic doors.

"Nyahaha! Hey, Lambo wants to ride in the trolley!"

"I-pin does too!"

"Respect your elders." Reborn said, sitting down in the child seat before either one of them could claim it for themselves. "I'm sitting here."

"No, no! That's not fair! Lambo wants it! Lambo wants it!"

"I hate kids. Too loud! Too loud!"

I nodded in a silent agreement.

"Now now." Nana said, trying to calm him down. "We can all share the trolley, okay? Here," She picked up I-pin and Lambo and put them in the part of the trolley where the food was meant to be. "See! You all fit!"

Fuuta didn't like the idea of sitting in the trolley. So when Nana opened her arms to him, in a lifting gesture, he shook his head and took my hand. He looked up at with those wide eyes. Secretly, he liked to go shopping with everyone else. He liked to cook with his Mama. He liked to be surrounded by family.

"Should we go and look in the freezer section Fuuta? I think we'll need hamburger patties tonight."

His lips perked up and the skin under his eyes crinkled. "Yes, lets!"

"Wait Phillipa!" Nana was wheeling the trolley and Lambo was trying to climb on the sides of it. "Don't get frozen ones, get actual mince! I want to start making fresher ones, since our families getting so big! Ara~ Maybe I should tell Tsuna to ask his friends for dinner as well...he never asks them over, so I never get to see how happy he is..."

I smiled at her train of thought. I had heard once or twice about how disappointed she had been with his performance at school and how she had hoped for a better future for him. But, in saying that, I think she hassled him out of love.

"Don't worry Nana, I will. Tsuna and his crew won't be able to make it, I don't think. They said something about a sumo wrestling contest, so they're practicing after school and may not be home till late."

"Oh, is that true? He never tells me anything..."

"Don't die." Reborn squeaked, as I turned to detach from the group.

I turned back and with my eyebrow twitching, I felt gutted. "You know, children shouldn't really be saying that sort of stuff Reborn. Do you want me to tell Nana on you? She'll make sure you don't get any coffee anytime soon."

Leon suddenly transformed into a gun, just as Nana was grazing though the fresh vegetables.

"Do you want to be shot at?"

"Ahaha~ You've done it now Phillipa! You've finally found a nerve to poke at!"

"Shut it rodent."

"Aw, is the baby getting angry?"

I shook my head. "Children. You're both children."

"Soon, this baby will get angry. If he does, he'll slam you into the freezer and you'll freeze till someone takes you out, thinking that you're chicken nuggets."

"Is that a poorly worded threat I hear?"

"You little s-"

I nudged Al with the bottom of my shoe in the other direction of the trolley and began walking in the other direction, Fuuta's fingers still firmly clasped around mine.

"See ya!"

Fuuta's eyes wandered across the random boxes of washing detergent that we passed, taking in the sale price signs, the ones that screamed 50% off! Only at Family Plus can you see prices like this!

How familiar, I thought, as we passed through the health section, grabbing a 4X pack of toilet paper. Wherever I go, those hounds always find some way to scream an advertisement in my face.

"Over there." Fuuta took the finger that he had been biting on and pointed to the refrigerator that stood against the side of the white brick supermarket walls, humming indefinitely. Light from the overhead lights made the floors shine. Both Fuuta and Al liked looking at their reflections.

I smiled. "What looks good Fuuta?"

"That one." He poked a brand that was on the second self. "This brand ranks 1st out of twenty seven brands of mince meat that are sold in the region."

"We'll get that one then." I took two of the large packets off of the shelf and wrapped them in one of the plastic bags that they provided so that you wouldn't get meat juice all over yourself. I really hated stains, so I thanked whoever installed it there.

"What else?" Fuuta asked.

"Well," I looked at the paper that Nana had ripped in half, so that we could get half of what she needed, and then we could meet up later at the checkout. "We need more rice as well and some salmon flakes...Oi Al! Get out of there!"

"But the sausages..."

"We don't need sausages!"

"We don't need sausages!" He repeated, mocking me. "But I want them!"

"I DON'T CARE!"

"Baka-philly baka-philly baka baka baka!"

"I'm going to skin you alive."

"Shishishishishi~ You know, you're arguing with a cat. You're making such an unpleasant scene."

I turned around and without even seeing him, I already knew what I wanted to say. Fuuta was clutching to the back of my skirt, making the purple fabric crumple. He didn't like the way that Belphegor looked at anyone, nor the way he spoke to them.

"Go away." I said, being firm with my words. "Did you not hear the warning put out to all Varia members that they are not allowed to socialize or approach the friends or family of the Tenth Vongola?"

"You don't need to bare your peasant fangs at me. I already know."

"Then why are you here?"

"Ushishishishishi~ I don't care for that blond idiot's rules. I'm hungry and I'm getting food. Shishishi."

"Then we will leave." I guided Fuuta in the direction I wanted to go and didn't pay any heed to the blond fool of the Varia. "Al, come."

"But don't you want to see what will happen when I tear his eyeballs out?"

"No, no eyeball tearing."

"Ushi? Are you trying to piss me off?"

I sighed. Of all the times for Al to be a hormonal teenager...

"Al, we're leaving. Nana wants us to get some rice and some salmon flakes. You can stay if you want, but I ain't carrying your fat-injured-ass home."

Fuuta ran off in the direction of the rice and I jogged, wanting to get away from the freak. I didn't like the vibes he gave off, or what he thought in his head. It seemed that most of the Varia, spare Lussy for the fact that he thinks of totally different things, lay along the lines of murder, killing and general fighting.

"Here!" Fuuta called, behind down to the bottom shelf. He tried lifting the bag with on his own, his little knees buckling from the disproportion of weight. "Maha..."

"Are you okay?"

"Y-Yes!"

"You don't need any help?"

"No!"

I smiled at his stubbornness as he tried to lift the bag of rice again, this time, getting it off of the ground for a few seconds before having to drop it down again. His bottom lip pouted and I heard him think that he wished to grow up faster.

"How about we swap?" I suggested. "I'll carry the rice and you carry the meat. And when we find the salmon flakes, you can carry that too."

He thought on the offer and then nodded, thinking that we should get back to his Mama. He didn't like being away from her for long periods of time. And since we ran into Belphegor, Fuuta's nervousness was considerably high.

I gave him the bagged meat and picked up the bag of rice, grunting a little, realizing that this bag was indeed heavy. It kind of surprised me that Fuuta even lifted it off the ground. Al wandered off to another aisle and eventually after going the wrong way, we found one of the last packets of salmon left on the shelf.

I put the bag of rice down by my feet and stood up onto my tip-toes, lifting the bag down to Fuuta. He thanked me with a very cute smile and put it on top of the meat bag.

"Getting infatuated by a child?"

His comment caught me off guard and I shot the little flea ball a glare as we walked to the checkout counter, to find Nana and the children. Nana had her back to us but by the time we got closer, I saw a very distinct multicoloured hair-do and immediately put myself between the two.

"Here you go Nana." I pushed the bag into her arms. "Oh, and can you help Fuuta as well? He also said he wanted some tomatoes, so you should go look for those as well!"

"Really? Then I'll just have to run back and get some." She shrugged and walked back to the fresh produce department, leaving me with the trolley, full with food and children.

"That wasn't very nice!" He cried, pouting like a child would.

"He's like a peacock, this one is."

"Well, I don't know if you've noticed, but you're not allowed to talk to that woman. Or be in ten metres of her."

Lussy waved his arms around. "I wasn't following her! I'm actually just getting food!"

"Lies. If you wanted food, you would have gotten one of your subordinates to do it."

"They never get anything right." Mammon said, floating over to us. He had a can in his hand. His fingers covered most of the kanji , but from what the picture depicted, I guessed it had something to do with corn.

"Right." I rolled my eyes. "Make sure you keep your distance, yeah? The last thing I want is for Iemitsu to be on my tail again."

In return, Lussuria rolled his eyes, agreeing. "Whatever!"

"Thank you."

Mammon sniffed. "I have information, if you're wondering."

"I'm listening." I replied, looking around to check if Nana had returned yet.

"It's not anything specific, but here." He handed me a piece of paper and without looking at it, I put it in my skirt pocket and did up the zip. "Those are addresses of old hideouts that he used."

"I don't need old hideouts. I need his location."

"Hold your horses. These are a list of his old hideouts, who's power has been reactivated recently. It's not anything definite, but it's the best I could get. Verde knows how to conceal himself well."

I suddenly found myself getting very excited.

"T'ch, forget her Mammon! We've got to get back to the boss or he'll kill us!"

"Thank you." I said.

Mammon didn't reply, but instead walked to the checkout and paid for the corn-thingy. Nana, ironically, managed to get back to me just as they disappeared from my thought radar. (Not that I could read Mammon's thoughts that well. He was a difficult fellow to navigate.)

"Here we go!" She smiled, holding up a massive bag of tomatoes. The kids screamed wildly as she returned, happy that she was here again. "Let's get these to the checkout and go home already. I want to start cooking as soon as possible!"

~o0o~

Nana decided that since Tsuna and his crew wasn't going to be back until late, we should do a slow cooker meal. I heard Tsuna call his greetings as he got home, obviously tired and dreading the next trial. He didn't look so happy at the first, so I put it down to his usual nerves.

That, and he was most definitely afraid for the safety of his friends. His soul was so kind and so quick to forgive, that I found myself worrying a little for his future. Not only did I believe that he would pass these stupid trials, and that he would also go onto greater things.

All he needs to do is to fix those god damned nerves.

I excused myself from cutting up the onions and climbed the stairs to his room.

I knocked on the door and entered to see Tsuna playing with Lambo. Well, not playing. More like Lambo running around with Tsuna sighing heavily, his mind obviously worrying tremendously about the small cow child. (Which made me wonder, why in god's name did he decide to dress like a cow?)

"You okay?"

He looked up and his eyes widened in surprise. "P-Phillipa!"

"You look down." I said, hanging off of the door frame.

"I'm not!"

Is that so?

"Really? With the face you were pulling, I could have sworn you were worrying about tonights trials. Oh well, must have been my imagination then. You better hurry off soon, because you might be late or Nana will figure out that Lambo won't be here. Or both, if you're very unlucky."

He smiled at my apparent airheadedness, not sure if I was kidding or not. Tsuna wasn't too sure what I was thinking most of the time I opened my mouth.

"You know what, just because I can, I'll try my best to keep your Mama occupied while you guys are at the trials!"

"Eh? You're not coming?" He asked, eyes wide open with shock. He could've sworn that I would have been more eager to watch some fighting, since I was Reborn's daughter.

How right he was.

"So-ree, Tsu-na. I'm grounded indefinitely till the period of the trials is up, or when Iemitsu lifts my ban."

"W-What?! For what?!"

I nodded. "Not doing my job properly." I shrugged. " I'll send Al along with you, since he too likes to watch the trials."

"Your cat?" He asked questioningly.

"Hey, if you want your face torn off, that's fine by me; he will find out though. Don't ever underestimate my moggy. Now if you don't hurry up and get out of here, I'll whack you with the spatula!"

~o0o~

The smell of cooking beef lingered throughout the Sawada household. Seeping through doorways, dancing in the air, waking me up from my afternoon slumber. I had fell asleep at three, and it was now eight at night.

I had slept for five whole hours without being jumped on or licked in the face.

What a miracle.

That being said, it didn't feel like one. I just felt even more tired. I needed to sort out a proper sleeping plan.

I sauntered downstairs to see the children enjoying the start of the meal, calling their greetings, just before they dug in. Nana had dealt out my portion into a white ceramic bowl and frowned in a puzzling way.

"Hm? My my, where's Lambo today? I haven't seen him since we got home Phillipa! And he's not in his room..."

"I remember Tsuna saying that he was going to take him to the wrestling practice."

"What? I don't remember Lambo saying anything about that. He would have told me about it. He loves going to new places you know, so that's what he would've been thinking all day.."

Crap, she's oblivious sometimes, but she can be a sharp thinker. I'm going to have to stretch my bluffing skills...

"Mhm. He did, he did I tell you. Just after he got home from school, Tsuna said I'm taking Lambo to training with me! And then I said What, but that's too late for a child to be out at night! And then he said Don't worry, it'll b- HIIEEEEEE Phillipa, don't hit me with the spatula! Mhm, that's what he said exactly."

"He said that?"

"Yeah."

"Smooth move." Al mouthed.

She sighed for a minute and then regained her smiling composure, handing me the bowl full of beef and tomato stew.

I thanked her and then excused myself, taking my dinner up into my room. From there, when I closed the floor door, I called up Basil for a status update.

"Basil speaking."

"Yo. Anybody dead yet?"

"Phillipa!"

I heard the rustling of the phone and suddenly, Iemitsu's voice came on the line.

"What is it Phillipa? Has something happened?"

"No, but Nana is getting worried. I won't be able to hold her back for much longer. Is there an update on the trials? I'm itching to know."

"Tsuna just interfered with the battle, so the lightning ring is going to be handed over to the Varia."

Well, that didn't end well, did it?

"I take it that Lambo lost them?"

"He did. He even used the ten year bazooka and still lost."

Ten year bazooka?

"Ain't that thing a myth?

"Nope. It's been passed down in his family for a while now. Only a select few know about it's existence. Remember, you're still meant to stay with the family, okay? After I hang up, I'm going to call Nana and say that Lambo's being transported to the hospital. You're to go with them."

Well crud. This day just wasn't nice to the Vongola boss, was it?

~o0o~

I sat that night holding Nana's hand as she sat by Lambo's bedside, waiting patiently to hear any news from the doctors on stand-by or if Lambo would even wake up. She was practically hysterical when Iemitsu called. She was so worried and worked up over it. Flooding of her thoughts was basically impossible to stop, just because on the fact alone that she was so upset. Thinking that she had failed as a parent.

Bianchi had agreed to watch over the others and I kept her in the loop with what I'd heard. Apparently, her little brother was in for the next trial. She was worrying in her own way. Reborn had tried to comfort her and I think it soothed her a little.

I had never needed a good enough reason to go to a hospital. Even when I had been injured with those lashes on the back from the torture chamber, I didn't go there. (I had found out later from Oregano that it had been a testing facility on the limitations of pain and experimental ways of inflicting it. They used tourists, the homeless, people who faded into the sidework. The ones who nobody noticed and the no-goods who nobody would miss.)

It stunk of antiseptic and was only filled with less than pleasant thoughts with the exception of the people who prayed for a better day.

My eyelids were heavy and ever since my nap, I hadn't felt energized at all. It was so quiet at night. There were no families bustling to see their loved ones. No doctors or nurses rushing to help a patient. No sirens outside to proclaim someone's detrimental health.

It was terribly quiet.

I detested it bitterly.

It was a bubbling kind of silence. My ears hurt at the lack of noisy squealing. So quicker than you could say I hope he turns out alright, the lights in my head turned off. I nodded off to sleep without realising it, wondering if Dino was asleep yet. He must have gone to the trial and gotten soaking wet.

I wonder if he took a raincoat.

Wait, what am I thinking?
