"I'm sorry." Was what I wanted to say. Essentially, I believed that I could so just go up to her and apologise. It was my fault for scaring her off, when she had stayed by my bedside. I couldn't find it in my heart to blame her for doing so either. I'd completely lost my marbles that day and refused to let anyone in the room after Dino had left. Both him and Reborn were the ones that unpicked the lock and convinced me to come out for dinner. They made chicken, and I couldn't eat much of what they gave me; the girls were, in my mind, slowly converting into little Nana's that kept dishing out food to everyone until you had to forcibly tell them to stop.

I was a lot like Reborn in tough situations. I'd muddle my words up, and never really be clear to what I was hinting at unless I really wanted people to understand. So, instead of apologising, I ended up frozen in the spot, back in the room where Yuni had slept by my side.

"Say what you need to." She told me, nodding her head sharply. She was petite and I remembered her mother as a taller woman. So, I wondered how old she was.

Then again, I don't always act like my father. I'm more like my mother, than anybody else.

"You're so cute…." I whispered, on the edge of showing the first smile in days. Her hat was two sizes too big for her head, and the girls had managed. But I realised how I was acting, how stupid I must have sounded. "Sorry. My tongue slipped."

Instead of chastising, something I'd expect from Lal or Iemitsu, she only giggled. Her aura was peaceful, and I felt like I wanted to sleep. I really wanted to, actually. It had been harder to get out of bed these days.

"You don't have to apologise, really. You're upset and you're allowed to mess up."

"That's all I do now, it seems…."

"He was your brother, yes?"

I blinked. "How d-"

She smiled and laughed with an uneasiness in her eyes. "You screamed it at the top of your lungs, remember?"

"I do, actually. Rather I didn't, but hey, I lost my marbles." I shrugged. "It's not like I was going to sit there and act like the sky was blue and everything was okay. It's not."

"I heard from you that he was from this time. That means not everything is lost. He's still alive in the hope is not lost!"

"I know," I replied quietly, imagining it. "I've already thought about that. But there is so much more I'm not ready to tell anyone about. They're dark and horrible and I think that letting them know would be a worser fate than death."

"Why's that, Aunty?"

I blinked at the given name that sounded so foreign. She called Reborn Uncle most of the time, so I guess due to our age difference she ended up calling me that. It felt odd.

"I can't hide my from my past, Yuni. Others drown their and I can't do the same with mine because I could climb the tallest mountain and they would swim after me."

"You look so sad when you say that." She mumbled absently, to herself rather than me.

I shrugged and she jumped a little.

"It's not hard to deduce why. I'm just getting annoyed by it, that's all."

I wasn't allowed to go back to the past with them. It would have only been for a few hours here, but I had to take care of the burns on my legs and waist. The most severe were the ones that had been applied when there had been no cloth between the vine and my skin. Giovanni told me I would be okay, that there would be cream I could put on for the inflammation. He told me that the wounds would heal completely within a week, due to the fast acting serum, but those scars weren't going to do a houdini act, unfortunately.

"I'll be fine." I told Reborn, as he stopped by before returning with the others to the past for some new trials he had planned out. He didn't have everything set out straight in his mind, and secretly I hoped that they wouldn't hurt too much. I wanted them to be in tip top condition for when Byakuran comes back. Yuni would go with them. She'd be safe, for the moment. "I'll be here with Lal and the others. For me it will be like I'm only sleeping a night or two alone at home. Not a big deal."

"Are you sure?" He questioned.

I nodded. "Yes, absolutely. I want to stay here, but I'm not going to lounge around, you realise. The minute these wounds are healed, I'm heading down to the training room."

"Don't push yourself."

"I have to." I told him, with a hint of bitterness. "I want to get stronger."

"For what?" He asked. "What's your purpose?"

"I want to get stronger, so that I can protect."

"Protect who?" Reborn pressed. "From what?"

That was a very good question.

I wasn't too sure anymore.

"I'll get back to you on that one." I replied, making sure that all of my bandages were a-okay before I walked him out. I wanted to go visit Lal after they went. You know, for fun.

He nodded, and just as he was walking back down the hall he came from, he called out to me. My head bobbed up, and he wished me a good night. And he hoped I was feeling better.

I wasn't.

But it was nice that he was thinking of me.

I liked that he was my Dad.

"Have you tried calling in at her apartment?" Romario asked, as his boss sat behind his desk, one finger tapping his cheek as Dino tried to figure out what to do.

"Already tried that." He replied, sighing. "She's not there either."

"What about Reborn?"

"He's not picking up the phone. Nor is she." Dino sat back in his lazyboy. "Maybe they're on a mission…"

"Wouldn't Reborn still be training Tsunayoshi?"

Dino blinked. "Ah, yes! B-But he's going to taunt me if I don't ask soon….."

"Then be a man and show your teacher who's who, boss!"

Dino smiled at his right hand man. Him and the rest of miss men were always trying to cheer him up if he ever felt down or nervous.

He really wished they weren't like that all the time, however.

"Yo Bro."

Lal was still lying on her backside, in the bed, stiff and no doubt annoyed as heck. She hadn't changed at all, and I was glad because of it. That meant she would treat me the same. I wouldn't get sympathetic, sickly looks. I wouldn't get politeness on extremities or extra servings of food and whatnot.

And she was asleep.

My first instinct was to yell at her, but then I would feel quite bad. So in the end, I had no choice but to back out of the room. I sighed heavily after closing the door, in the quickest way possible that made no sound.

I was so bored.

~o0o~

He was so bored. Summer was the one thing he used to look forward to when Dino was still attending school in Florence. He would be able to leave school early and head down to the corner store, just to buy sweets and popsicles. It seemed childish, as he looked upon the fond memory now, but he loved those days. They smelt of cut grass and rainclouds sometimes, when the gardener had decided to cut the lawns outside. He especially loved it when Phillipa would come over, and she would bake and cook things. He never learned how, despite his Italian heritage. The maids and chefs had done everything for him when he was younger, because his father wanted him to focus on more important things, like the family business.

She was a constant distraction.

A beautiful distraction.

Since becoming boss, much to the happiness of his men, he had been working as hard as he could to better the expectations of his image and that of his famiglia. There were times that he stopped signing the papers and stared out the windows of the circular office that had been passed down from son to son. Out the window, there was a view of some chairs and a patio table, accompanied with a green umbrella and surrounded by roses of all sorts. He remembered when his mother and father would sit out there, and he would play with a brightly coloured ball on the lawn with Harris, the dog he had pleaded for his birthday.

Memories aside, he was slowly realising that it wasn't enough to give off a smile, to hand out signed sheets and please everybody. Everybody expected him to move on soon. It had only been over a year and a half since his initiation ceremony and some of the alliances were starting to talk.

Some he had made on his own. But the ones that were talking were his father's acquaintances, and he knew exactly why. The family fortune would go to someone of importance from the circle of acquaintances if the head of the house had died or was not wedd by the age of twenty-five. It said so in the contract that his great grandfather had created. Dino was determined to burn and erase that parchment the moment he did marry.

The problem was Phillipa. Or at least, convincing her.

After rubbing his eyes, trying to get rid of the sleeping feeling that had been plaguing him for the last couple of days, he picked up the phone and called her cellphone. He'd tried her home phone, but there was no answer there.

"Hey, this is Phillipa. If you wanna relay a message, leave it after the beep and I'll try to contact you back."

Dino sighed loudly and put the receiver down. He had tried to call earlier with that number and she still hadn't answered any of his messages. Which was unusual, since she usually replied to them on the same day.

Where the hell is she?

~o0o~

It was just past six when the returned. I was finishing up my dinner, some chicken katsu, while talking over stuff with Giannini. They seemed more happier than when they left, so I assumed that everything was alright for the time being. I was the one that served the rest of them dinner as well, despite the inner turmoil of Reborn and Dino, who were giving me that glare. You know the one, the one that's all like "Why aren't you in bed? Have you taken your pills yet? Oh, darling, you should be resting!" You know the one. With the motherly voice.

"I made up my mind, by the way."

"Eh?" Tsuna murmured, not really understanding what I was hinting at. But Reborn caught on anyway.

"And?"

"I'm fighting with you guys."

"What!" Dino shouted, almost dropping his fork onto the china plate. "But you're not even healed yet!"

"I'm almost them one more day." I replied sternly. Fuck, I was probably the least injured out of the three of us in the medical bay. There's me, then Shouichi and Lal, who were both bedridden. I had no idea when either would get up. It'd be a while for Lal, or until the battle was over. "And right now, you don't have much of a choice. I'll even stay in the back lines. But sitting me out is going to give me cabin fever, and then I'll really lose my mar-bls."

"You'll rip your stitches for the millionth time!"

"So, I'll just stitch myself back up."

Dino snorted out air and stuck his fork in his mouth. Surprisingly enough, most of his food was gone. There was food everywhere, but I gotten used to not pointing that out. It just embarrassed him.

"More rice?" I asked, gesturing the paddle at the ricecooker.

"No." He said, shaking his head. His eyes were dazy and then, he looked at me, with the contemplating thought gone. "More chicken."

I smiled.

~o0o~

For once, I was having a nice dream that was unfortunately interrupted by a rather loud explosion that set the fire alarm off. It was drowned out by another signal, that was the same one that was sounded when Lambo accidentally triggered the security beacons.

That meant shit was going down while I was hitting the hay.

Fuck.

"What's going on?!" I yelled, making sure that the door to my room was locked before I ran towards the control room. Which was on the other side of the base. That meant I had to run without stretching. Great.

"This is an emergency transmission! This is an emergency transmission! Please ensemble at the control room at once! "

They're here already? Geeez, freaking eager beavers, aren't they? They can't let me have some sleep, the bastards…..

I wasn't left alone for long. Luckily, it was Yuni that I ran into, and not anybody else. I couldn't bare to be as blunt towards her as I was to everybody else. I don't know why, but Reborn was very forgiving and nice to her. He even called her his 'niece'. So I guess, though that, I ended up treating her like family. She called me Aunty, and I was fine with that.

"What's happening?" I asked, having to put my hands on her shoulders.

She was shaking, and her eyes were wide open. There wasn't any sleep in them, and I had the itching feeling she was going to fall asleep soon. That wasn't terribly good.

"The base." She whispered. "They've gotten in here!"

"W-"

It was only by milliseconds that I had time to shove Yuni on the ground, before the wall next to us was shredded easier than a piece of tissue paper. It made a horrible sound and Yuni coughed a little at the dust that poured out from the cement blocks.

And my brain whirled into action.

"Get up." I ordered, holding her by the armpit. "Get up now, we have to leave!"

"But that's the way to the control room!"

"Then we'll find another way!" I yelled. I pushed her in front of me and we both ran the opposite way I came. "Because there's no way I want to be in the same room with one of those bastards."

His voice boomed down the halls, and Yuni cried out, in the fear that he might catch up. I would never allow that to happen.

Reborn would never forgive me.

"Princess Yuni…...Idjits, it's no use to run away from me."

"Fuck off!" I growled back, looking over my shoulder to see Zakuro gaining on us, quicker than I had anticipated.

"Duck!" Yuni yelled, and I made her hit the ground with me, just in time to miss Squalo's flying frenzied attack on our attacker.

"Vooooiiiii!" He took another swing at the man, who dodged it easily. "GO!"

"Be careful!"

"Just go already!" He snapped.

I helped Yuni to her feet again and we went the long way around to the control room, just as everyone was evacuating. I was worried for Squalo, but my mind told me to hurry on up and get over it. He wouldn't be too impressed with me if I went back for him.

Reborn breathed a sigh of relief. "You're both okay…."

"Squalo's still in there with Zakuro." I told him. "Someone has to go help him!"

"I'll go!" Yamamoto said, putting a hand up, and Reborn advised against it, saying that we should get to safety. Squalo was the type of guy to get all batshit crazy when he was facing someone alone, and he liked it like that. Despite how I really felt, I thought that this too was the better idea. Protecting Yuni was the main goal right now.

Lal was carried by Bianchi and Fuuta got the sickly Shouichi out of there alright, and I was secretly thanking my lucky stars that they weren't still in there.

We had to stop outside, since Shouichi was being carried with a stretcher and we didn't have anywhere to go but outside the base.

"Thank god we got out okay…" Tsuna said, his eyes checking upon everyone.

"Well?" Giannini asked. It was directed at Reborn, Lal and Yuni. Reborn had managed to climb into my arms as we were directing everyone out. "How's the new anti-non-7 policy cover working?"

Lal looked at her pacifier, her eyes shaking. "I...I feel the same as I was in the base…"

"I can barely feel a thing." Reborn replied, a smile plastered where his mouth was.

"Yes, I should be fine now!"

Well, that's one thing I don't have to worry about now…

He breathed a sigh of relief, and talked a little more about his new invention, while I checked on the status of everybody, seeing if they sustained any injuries during the evacuation. Thankfully, there weren't.

But I had that bad feeling in my stomach again, since I couldn't account for everybody. I couldn't feel that little red string that I saw when I closed my eyes. Everyone had one, and I couldn't see Squalos.

It was the swimming incident all over again.

The next topic was where we were going to stay next, since the base was practically a no-go zone now. Tsuna suggested his house, while Shouichi and I went against that motion. I was taught by Iemitsu that if I ever needed to go on the run, never go back to the places where everyone knows you go. That was a simple rule.

And then, Gokudera brought up that we could hide out at the hospital, the one where Lambo was transferred to when he got his ass bitten by that Varia dude. Huh, never did remember his name. He was creepy and stalkerish and I got the feeling that Xanxus was finding it like that as well.

But that didn't work either. The place just wasn't the same like it was ten years ago.

"In that case," Haru interrupted, clapping her hands together. "I have a good idea!"

"Huh?"

"I happen to know this realtor. She mentioned she knew a good hiding spot if I ever wanted to run away from home."

"Huh, a realtor!"

How convenient….I mused.

"That sounds wonderful." Kyoko quietly said.

"Yeah." Reborn nodded, surprisingly. "That might actually slip under their radar."

Tsuna was probably leaning towards my side. "Are y-you sure about this?"

"I'm with Tsuna on this one." I said. "Can we trust them?"

~o0o~

I, for one, did not trust this dude at all from the moment we shared glances. He knew a lot of things that certainly tipped my radar into the zone of suspicious. Not to mention he looked very similar to Gokudera. He didn't like me much either. He didn't give away a lot of information on his mind. That combination of things made me perturbed.

I was the last one of the Vongola group to enter the premises.

"Aren't you going to go in?" He asked blankly, slurping down on the broth of his ramen.

"I will." I said, entering. "Mr Whatever you are."

"That's Mr Kawahira, Miss."

We didn't have time to quarrel, and he knew that as Zakuro would be hot on our heels. Back when we were outside the base, my premonition was right about Squalo. Something was wrong down there, but we didn't have the luxury of exploring the base for what caused the explosion, even though that was evident. We had to hide before he came, and I made sure Yuni was close to me under the table. Somehow she had become my responsibility.

"Lambo is hungry…"

"Quiet." I hushed at him, turning to check the window out front. I'll by you crap later, if you promise to be quiet."

Lambo zipped his mouth shut and sat next to us with his legs curled up to his chest, like a lot of others were.

And, oh shit, how intense it got quickly. I heard the door open behind the table out front and Yuni grabbed my hand. She was very nervous and I prayed for the man to go away. To go away and take that bastard Kikyo with him.

I sensed him light his flame up and the back of my legs tensed.

"Guess I have to burn down each building to smoke them out."

Ah, crud…..

Al would be ripping out his eyeballs by now.

But then, very strangely, just as he was going to burn us to hell, he left very suddenly. It made me wonder what the gray haired man was really capable of, since Zakuro had proclaimed he had a stronger sense of smell than most.

"Off you go now, to Mount Fuji, in pursuit of an intangible high speed force."

My ears were burning at this man's bluntness.

"Is he gone?" Tsuna asked, carefully coming out from under the table.

We were all left wondering who the heck this guy was. But, yet again, we weren't left time to squander over silly little details. Tsuna was rather worried about Dino and Hibari, since they weren't at the base when it got attacked. That meant they were more susceptible to attacks.

Dino confirmed that he was facing Daisy, who had gone berserk. Despite that, he still remained calm, and asked how Yuni and I were doing. I said we were fine, dumbass, and he chuckled happily. He already knew that I only ever used that name when he was doing something incredibly stupid, for fear of his safety.

I sighed and smiled silently.

He's something.

Kawahira had to leave shortly after, apparently due to a job overseas for a couple of weeks. I didn't like him and all of his "convenient" placements. I looked over to Reborn, but he was too busy talking to Yamamoto.

"How are your legs?" Fuuta asked.

"Fine. They're fine, good as new now." I smiled. "I'm glad they've had a test drive before the fight."

"So we can use this place, eh…" Tsuna was a little reluctant to use a house/restaurant from a person he had just met, but he didn't have many choices.

Yamamoto wasn't that keen on staying in one spot either.

"You're going back?" Tsuna asked.

"Yup!" He said, laughing so. "Knowing Squalo, he should be fine. but just to be safe."

"You're right. Sorry that we can't come with you…"

"Don't worry." Bianchi chimed, standing next to Yamamoto. Her hair shined through the glazed glass, making it a light pink, almost a baby colour. She pointed to Spanner and Giovanni. "We'll be with him."

"Want me to come?" I asked.

Reborn shook his head. "No."

"...Alright. Take care then Bianchi."

She nodded, her lips glistening. "You too, Phillipa."

~o0o~

It wasn't any more than half an hour later after they had left that we were attacked by the Millefiore's mist guardian, who thought it would be a smart idea to become a fake Lambo.

But I caught him out, unexpectedly in his mind.

I mean, really. Lambo's not always stupid - sometimes - but heck man, he doesn't have that vocabulary. He refers to himself in third person as a kid and third person alone.

Torikabuto grabbed Yuni and flew away, bashing through those who had tried to barricade the front entrance. I barely got a foot out of the door when Yuni was saved.

By the man I met, who was trailing after her mother. But at least she was safe with someone who I knew that cared. Gamma really did love her mother, even though their romance would never be. That's what I felt from him. It was tragic, in all honesty. Nosaru and Tazuru, two people I had never met before, also aided in the protection of Yuni.

And the bastard was up there as well. I was going to kill him the next chance I got.

"Black spell?!" Kikyo growled, obviously not expecting their presence. "I thought they died when the base teleported!"

"Boo! Why are these twerps gettin' in our way?!"

"What's going on?!" Tsuna cried.

"It's Gamma." I said quickly. "And a couple of Yuni's friends. Come on Tsuna, think quick now! I promise, they're not going to hurt us! They just want Yuni safe!"

"I'm sorry for being so late princess." Gamma whispered, thanking his lucky stars that he got there in time. "But we can talk later."

"Torikabuto, what are you doing?! Take Yuni back already!"

"You should know all of Gammas tricks by now...I can handle this by myself." He hissed, and went straight in for the kill.

"Just bring it! I've been waiting for a battle to the death!"

"I can't wait Bro! We're not Black Spell anymore, we can beat them up all we want!"

~o0o~

I didn't feel like time was a reasonable concept in this impaired the time the group that contained Kikyo had fled, we too had ran away, deep into the forest near the mountains. It was dark, and we were all sitting around a campfire, be that because of drinking the night away, or the majority of people were sleeping. I wished I was in one of those groups, but after seeing the green haired hag my blood had really boiled up, which prevented me from sleeping. I wished I could, for the life of me, but it ceased tonight. We were going to battle, we were going to war tomorrow.

It was lucky that Bianchi had gone into my room for me and got the box out. I'm ashamed to say that I forgot it, but in all respects I really hadn't thought about it since Al died. I hadn't been able to open it, and unlike all of the other boxes, mine didn't have an opening.

So when I asked Dino about what it was, he shrugged and stated that he hadn't ever seen me use it before, because I didn't like to. On top of that, apparently, I'd asked Verde to make one especially for me so that it could respond to my flames alone, which explained why nobody could open it.

Although, I had no idea how to open it myself.

Geeez, future me. That's some fiiiine work you're doing for yourself.

"Are you still up?" Reborn asked, as he sat next to me. I was facing away from the bonfire, into the forest, into a darkness where I couldn't hear or see anyone's mins or faces. It was a sort of break for me. Reborn didn't disturb the practice that I related to meditating.

"I was going to keep watch tonight, in case something happens."

Or someone comes.

"I thought you were going to fight tomorrow." He stated cheekily. "You need sleep for that."

"You want me to sleep Old Man?" I laid down on my back, and closed my eyes. The star alignments were imprinted on my eyelids. I could see them, "Goodnight then."

Reborn's presence didn't dissipate, like all the other minds were. They switched off sometimes, when they slept, but I kept my eyes closed, waiting for him to wander off to Tsuna, like always.' But he didn't, in the end.

I felt his head rest against my stomach. He was warm, and the only mind I could hear over my slow breathing pattern was his.

"You have too much pride." He said randomly. "Or maybe I wish for the best out of you. I don't know anymore, my brain is aging…."

"I hold pride in what I hold dear. It's all I've got to hold on to as I dig myself to an apparent, early grave."

"I'm sorry….about Allemande. I knew you two were close."

I opened my eyes, and unexpectedly, I chuckled. "Not as close as I thought. And why are you sorry? It's nobody's fault except…..Kikyo that he died the way he did." I breathed out my nose. "But I believe that if I wasn't out there, he would still be alive. And that I would still be walking around as naive as ever,"

What got me was why he came back to the past. What on earth did he need to find out, before I died.

"I just regret not telling him how much he meant."

"To Mason?"

"To both." I replied, in a whisper. "I feel they were two. Not one. I'll probably always see them as different."

"You really going through with the revenge thing tomorrow?"

"You're a hitman, are you not? Why should it surprise you?" I asked, sitting up slightly, then laying back down. I sighed, and thought about it. "I'm going to go in fighting. If he dies, he dies. I'm certainly not going to let him get out alive, you realise,"

"I know." He said, thinking this type of thinking runs in the family. That made me wonder how my grandparents were. Reborn muttered the next bit, so that the others wouldn't hear him. I thought it was cute. "Kick him good tomorrow, but be classy about it. Make me proud to call you my daughter."

You're bringing up the daughter card? I questioned in my head.

In the end, I nodded. "Thanks Dad."

~o0o~

The next morning came with high anticipation for most of us. We all got up early, and my hands were shaking.

Today's the day.

Today's the day.

We planned to sneak up on them. To get them before they get to us. To pick off Byakuran's key players would be key in this battle, if we had a chance of stopping him at all. His power was weakening, but Reborn didn't want to take any chances.

And boy, was he a worrywart today.

"Can you feel that Yuni!?" I yelled, as an explosion sounded near us. "Those smell like Storm flames!"

"They feel like Zakuro's….." She murmured.

"I wonder what happened." Kyoko voiced. "There were explosions, but now they've died out."

"That's my cue." I said, getting ready to head out. "You guys, please be careful. Message me if you need anything."

"B-But you can't!" Haru cried.

I smiled at her tenacity. "I don't have an option this time. I want to fight. I want to live."

She didn't say anything, but she was upset. She still thought I was mortally wounded, after all. Haru and the others did manage watch my freak out. What's to say I won't come out again, was her thought. What if I get hurt badly, and no-one helps me this time?

"I'll be back, I promise." I assured her.

"Don't make promises you can't keep kiddo. The only people that will help you after that is yourself."

My gut turned on its side as Al's voice played in my head. He was constantly there. And I had failed so much in my life, I always felt at ease if he was there.

But he wasn't.

So, I decided, this was one promise I was going to keep.

I was going to kill the man who murdered my friend.

At times, I swear I'm as clumsy as Dino himself. Already this week, I've tripped up the stairs more times in my life. Almost broke my ankle too. Would be unfortunate, however, there's a first for everything and breaking a bone is still on the list.
