He was panting and blood was pumping in his ears, blurring out any other sounds. Daniel stepped out of the car and ran towards the front door.
She was coming.
His daughter was coming.
He was about to open the front door when it was opened from the other side by a very scared and anxious looking Cora.
"Oh finally." She sighed in relief.
"Where is she?" He asked, worry evident on his face as he stepped over the threshold. "Where is Regina?"
"Living room." Cora aswered as she pointed in said direction.
He quickly made his way towards the living room and immediately dropped on his knees next to the couch Regina was sitting on.
"Hello dear." The brunette said calmly as she took a sip from the glass of water in her right hand.
Daniel was shocked that Regina could be this calm right now. "Regina we need to get you to a hospital. Like, right now." He said as he stood up. "Cora, would you grab Regina's bag? It's in our bedroom." He asked to older woman who was standing in the door opening.
Cora nodded. "Yes, of course." She said before quickly making her way upstairs to do just that.
"Daniel, there's no need to go to a hospital just yet, the contractions are at least thirty minutes apart. So why don't you ju-" Regina stopped talking immediately as pain filled her face and she grabbed Daniel arm in a tight grip. Once the wave of pain was over Regina let go, panting as she tried to control her breathing.
He lifted his eyebrow in a pointing look. "How far apart was this one?"
Regina rolled her eyes as she rubbed her stomach and looked up at the clock. "Twenty minutes, I think."
"That's what I'm talking about. I'm taking you to the hospital, whether you or dr. Cross like it or not." He stated and quickly walked over to the foyer to grab Regina's coat and purse.
Cora came walking in the living room, carrying the large black duffle bag that contained all Regina's things and some things for the baby as well. "So you've finally convinced her to go to a hospital?" The older brunette asked as she put the bag down.
"This is completely unnecesary at this moment." Regina tried again, to be honest, going to the hospital made it all the more real. And Regina was just so terrified. "I would've thought you'd understand mother, you had me at home."
"Yes that's true, but I didn't have a choice. You do, Regina." Cora said softly as she took the coat from Daniel's hand and gave it to Regina so she could out it on.
"I'm so glad we decided to let Henry stay at Emma's in case this happened." Daniel smiled as he grabbed the duffle bag from the floor and hoisted it over his shoulder.
...
"Dear, you're probably breaking every speed limit there is in this town. And I should know, I'm the mayor." Regina said pointedly as she rubbed her stomach. Fortunately they were close to the hospital. It was about five minutes away.
"I need to get you to the hospital as fast as possible, Emma can arrest me tomorrow." He huffed as he turned the corner.
"I'll probably still be in labor by then, this is not going very fast." Regina said softly as she suddenly felt another contraction coming. Her hand curled around the car seat, squeezing until her knuckles turned white. A soft whimper left her mouth as she tried to breath through it. "Fuck this hurts."
Cora's hand softly squeezed her daughter's shoulder in silent support. "It's alright, Regina. We're almost there." She said from behind her. Regina wiped the sweat from her upper lip when the pain passed.
"I can't do this any longer." She panted as she released the tight grip on the leather of her car seat.
Cora chuckled. "It will be alright, dear."
Daniel smiled reassuringly and turned another corner. He parked the black Mercedes on the hospital parking lot and both Cora and Daniel quickly got out off the car to assist Regina. "I need a doctor, my fiancée is in labor." He yelled as he allowed Regina to lean most of her weight on him.
A blonde nurse wearing a braid walked around the counter. She grabbed a wheelchair and rolled it towards them. "Please sit down, miss Mills. I'll escort you and your fiancé towards a room, dr. Cross will be there as soon as possible." She said kindly.
"No." Regina shook her head as she carefully lowered her body on the wheelchair. "I want my mother there too." She said as she smiled up at her mother.
Cora smiled down at her daughter as tears began to fill her eyes. She just couldn't stop the salty liquid and to be honest, she wasn't sure if she even wanted to. Regina wanted her to be present for the birth of her granddaughter. This was possibly one of the best days of her life. "Thank you." She said with a croaked voice.
"Very well." The nurse answered as she pushed Regina's wheelchair towards one of the free rooms, Daniel and Cora following on the foot.
It wasn't long before Regina was hooked onto several monitors. The nurse had left a few minutes ago, searching for dr. Cross. Daniel was right beside her bed, letting Regina squash his hand as the brunette was going through yet another contraction. They were now about fifteen minutes apart.
Cora was sitting in a chair, just watching helplessly as her daughter was going through excrutiating pain, and she could do nothing. Absolutely nothing. And it was only going to be worse from now on.
Oh yes, Cora remembered the pain of childbirth all too well.
"You're doing great, darling." Daniel said as he kissed Regina's sweaty forehead.
Regina whimpered as the pain started to subside again. Mercifully. "Fuck, this really really hurts." She said in a pained voice and realised Daniel's hand. Instead she moved onto her side and pulled her legs up.
"It's going to be alright, darling. Just think about the beautiful little girl you'll have in your arms after this." He tried as he rubbed his hand to return the blood flow. But he did it were Regina wouldn't see it, of course.
"Well that was about time, wouldn't you say Regina." Dr. Cross said with a smile as she stepped inside the room and closed the door behind her again.
Regina just mumbled as she moved onto her back again. Dr. Cross quickly walked over towards the bed and carefully placed her hands on Regina's stomach. "I need to check how much you've dilated." She said as she removed her hands again.
Regina nodded as she pulled her legs up and placed her feet flat on the bed. Dr. Cross pulled the sheets away. She quickly checked before putting the sheets down again. "You've only dilated four centimeters, so there's still a long road ahead." She said as she rounded the bed and looked at the monitors. "But everything's going well with both you and the baby. Have you thought about an epidural yet?" She asked.
Regina nodded. "Yes, I don't want one."
"Really Regina? You're absolutely sure?" Daniel asked softly. He didn't want Regina to be in pain.
"Yes." Regina nodded. "I will not take any drugs to deliver a child, many women have done it without that." She stated.
"Alright." Daniel nodded with a sigh. "Well, then I'm ready for now, I'll come again in about an hour to check on you again. In the meantime, if something happens, just push that button." She said as she pointed at the red button on the wall next to the bed.
"Will do, doctor." Regina said as she shot her a tired smile and then moved onto her side again. She found that this position relieved some of the pain. And she would need that, seeing that the doctor had said she still had a long road ahead of her.
Fuck.
...
"Henry get your butt down here!" Emma yelled upstairs as she pushed the phone to her ear again. "So it's really happening?" Emma asked with a small smile.
"Yes." Daniel answered, he sounded very excited through the phone.
"And Regina let you leave her side? I'm surprised."
"Well, she was the one to order me to call you and Henry." He chuckled.
Henry quickly made his way downstairs. "What is it?" He asked, the controller still in his left hand.
"Your little sister is coming." Emma said with a smile.
"Really?!" Henry yelled as his eyes widened with excitement. "She's really coming?!"
Emma chuckled and nodded before she lifted the phone again. "We'll be there in ten." She said and then hung up. "Grab your shoes kid, we're going to the hospital."
...
"Hey, Daniel, how are you holding up?" Charming asked as he, together with Snow, Emma and Henry stepped inside the waiting room.
"I'm nervous. Cora is with her now, so I could take a quick bathroom break, we've been here since this morning." He said, nudging at the clock which said it was 4 PM. "That means already five hours in."
"Can I see my mom, dad?" Henry asked as he stepped away from behind his grandfather.
"Let me ask first, Henry." Daniel said with a smile as he turned around and made his way towards Regina's room. He opened the door and quickly got in, but he stopped when he saw the scene in front of him.
Regina was lying on her side, her back to the door. By the way the muscles of her back were taut, Daniel knew she was having another contraction. Cora was bent over her daughter, holding her tight as she whispered soothing words in Regina's ear. Small whimperes of pain were leaving his fiancée's mouth and Daniel felt guilty that he couldn't do anything to stop the pain.
Only when he saw Regina's body relax again, did he move. "Hey," he said softly and bent down to kiss Regina's cheek. "There's someone who wants to see you."
"Who?" Regina asked as she rolled on her back. She was still panting as she rubbed her stomach.
"Henry." Daniel smiled softly as he quickly looked up at Cora, who was rubbing her hand, the same way he had just done. "Should I let him in?"
"Yes." Regina smiled.
Daniel nodded before quickly stepping out of the room to get Henry.
"Mom!" The preteen yelled as he stepped into the room and immediately ran towards his mother's bed. "Are you alright?" He asked carefully as he looked at her sweaty and pale face.
"I will be, sweetheart." Regina said with a smile as she used one hand to softly stroke his cheek.
"Can I stay with you?" He asked softly, looking way younger then his actual age.
Regina shook her head. "I don't think you want to be here when she gets born, dear." She smiled. "Lots of icky stuff."
The boy seemed to think about it for a moment but then quickly nodded. "I'll wait with Emma."
"I think that's a good idea."
Regina wanted to laugh but instead her face scrunched up with pain, her hands curled around hospital bed tightly as she let out a pained whimper.
"Mom?" Henry asked, worry evident on his face. He didn't like seeing his mother in pain and by the way her whole body went rigid, she surely was. And a lot of it that is.
"It's alright, Henry." Cora said softly as she moved to stand in front of him, blocking his view from his brunette mother. She was sure Regina didn't want Henry seeing her like this. "It's all going to be okay."
"But she's in pain." He objected.
"Yes, she is. But that only means that the baby wants to get out and that everything is going well."
"Oh."
"So why don't you and I go and have a snack from the cafeteria?" She asked with a smile.
The young boy nodded. "Okay." He quickly made his way towards his mother - who was now panting as her body started to relax again - and pecked her on the cheek carefully. "I love you mom, and I'll be right there in the waiting room" he smiled.
...
Another eight hours passed slowly, at least for the Mills family. And most of all Regina. Contractions were now two minutes apart and that meant the brunette barely had time to breathe. Cora and Daniel were still with her and the rest of the family was sitting in the waiting room, just waiting, or fast asleep.
"Oh god." Regina moaned in pain as yet another contraction ripped through her body. She curled further into herself and gripped Daniel's hand even tighter. Cora was watching with tears in her eyes. She hated seeing Regina like this.
Dr. Cross came walking in the room with a calm expression. "So Regina, I'm going check you're progress, okay?"
Regina nodded weekly as she released Daniel's hand, only to grab it again a few second later when she felt another contraction starting again.
"You're ready to push, Regina." Dr. Cross said with a smile. "Ready to meet your little girl?"
"God yes." Regina moaned as she gripped Daniel's hand.
Dr. Cross quickly grabbed a pair of latex gloves and asked for a nurse. "Okay, I want you to push on the next contraction." She said as she placed Regina's feet flat on the bed.
Regina nodded as she took a deep breath. "Mother?" She whimpered softly. She wanted and needed her mother with her.
Cora quickly stood up and took Regina's other hand. "I'm right here, darling. Everything is going to be okay." She said reassuringly as she placed a kiss on her daughter's sweaty forehead.
A contraction ripped through her body again and Regina started to push. A pained scream ripped it's way out of her throat before she could stop it.
"Breathe honey." Daniel said softly as he used the washcloth and wiped the sweat from her brow.
"Oh fuck! You did this to me you bastard!" Regina yelled through clenched teeth as she dropped back down against the pillows. "We're never having sex again!"
"Regina." Daniel couldn't help but grin at Cora's disgusted expression. "You're mother is right here."
But Regina really didn't care because she felt another contraction coming again.
"She's almost there, Regina." Dr. Cross smiled as she patted Regina's knee in a comforting manner. "Just one more push."
A pained scream echoed throughout the room as Regina pushed with all her might. She felt a small body leave her own as she fell back against the soft pillows. A high pitched cry filled her ears as she released both her mother's and Daniel's hands.
Dr. Cross smiled as she cut the umbilical chord and laid the baby down on Regina's chest. "Regina I need you to give one last push, we need to get the afterbirth." She said softly.
Regina was crying with joy but she nodded, her eyes trained on the little girl on her chest- who had stopped crying the moment she looked up at her mother. She gave one last push, even though she was exhausted.
"Oh Regina, she like an exact replica of you." Cora laughed with joy as she stared down at her granddaughter.
Regina smiled brightly as she stroked Aiden soft cheek with her finger. "She is, isn't she?" Regina said softly. Aiden's little mouth started sucking at the fabric of Regina's shirt and Regina laughed. "You're hungry aren't you?" She softly coed. "You really are your father's daughter."
"Hey." Daniel protested, but he was still staring in awe at the small human on Regina's chest. "I- I can't disagree with that."
Regina laughed as she quickly unbuttoned her shirt and let Aiden latch onto her nipple. She gasped softly at the sensation she had never felt before and thought she would never feel.
"Look at what we did." Regina said proudly as she stroked her daughter's soft dark hair.
"She's beautiful, dear." Cora smiled as she looked at the small family, her eyes full of love.
"I love you so much." Daniel said as he softly kissed Regina's temple. "You can't even imagine.
