A/N: Because no adventure with the Straw Hats goes flawlessly...
When Zoro and Sanji finally caught up with the rest of their crew they had gone several hundred yards into the side of the mountain before hitting a dead end. That was apparently the cause for the scream though, as Nami had discovered the so-called 'treasure'. "This is all junk!" she cried as she kicked at a piece of broken pottery. "This was a complete waste of time!"
"Oh come on, Nami! It was fun!" Luffy said as he dug through another pile of what looked like the entire contents of a house that had been trashed at some point. He promptly got his hand stuck in another pot as he was digging around. "Ah! Let go of me!" he said, flailing his arm around to try and shake the dirty piece of ceramic off of his hand. "Usopp help!"
"How do you always do this?" Usopp asked as he went to go pull on the pot to try and get it unstuck from their captain's hand.
Luffy's arm stretched but his hand remained trapped. The rest of the crew ignored their antics, with the exception of Chopper who went over to try and help. "This pottery is all very old. Almost as old as the ponygraphs," Robin said as she examined a nearly intact pot that had been cushioned by the crushed pieces of its neighbors. "It may be from the same people who recorded the 'True History' in the first place."
Sanji flicked his cigarette as he examined a large piece of slightly curved ceramic by his foot. It had a large sea monster carved into the surface and then painted, though most of the paint had worn off. Only a few smudges were left behind. "So, I guess this trip was a bust," he mused.
Nami sunk to her knees in front of the pile of half rotted wood that looked like it had once been all sorts of furniture. "It's not fair… why can't we ever find any normal treasure?" she asked, dramatic tears streaming down her face.
"Ah, don't cry, Nami-swan!" Sanji said, moving closer to her. "It's not that bad!"
"Seriously. You're acting like it's the end of the world or something," Zoro grumbled.
Nami whipped around, tears dried up and eyes blazing. "Don't you get it? We need money to get supplies, moron! We're scraping the bottom of the barrel as it is! We haven't found anything decent or gotten any good rewards in months! Our expenses are through the roof and we don't have any income!" she snapped before pointing to Luffy who's arm was stretched across the entire cave as Usopp strained to keep pulling. Luffy himself was wrapped around a large rock, trying to keep himself from snapping back into shape. "Especially with him eating half our profits all the time!"
"But Naaamiii-"
Luffy's whining was cut off when the rock suddenly cracked and gave way. "Gaaahh!" Luffy zipped across the cave to slam into Usopp hard. They both went tumbling back before disappearing over the side of the cliff. The rest of the crew could hear them screaming before being cut off by a huge thud. A moment later there was another, louder, crash.
"Great…"
Sanji rolled his eyes and headed for the front of the cave. "Those damn idiots," he muttered around his cigarette. When he got to the edge of the cliff he peered down after them. His eyes widened at the huge hole that was now at the bottom. He could see Luffy and Usopp laying amid rubble looking dazed or just outright unconscious. But what was really surprising was that Sanji could see actual square paving stones under them. Too well formed to be natural. "Hey," he called, looking back at the cave at the rest of the crew.
"What is it, Cook-san?" Robin asked as she and Zoro led the way over to where he was standing.
"Looks like the idiots actually found something," Sanji muttered, nodding his head over the side towards the hole.
Nami brightened instantly at the sight of the hole. "An underground treasure vault!?" she guessed, eyes turning into belli signs instantly. "We've got to get down there!"
Zoro snorted. "It's probably just an old empty storage room," he declared, clearly unimpressed.
"Don't say that!" Nami snapped.
"Either way we should check it out," Robin mused as she crossed her arms and made a stairway of arms and legs. It was kind of creepy to be honest.
"Plus we need to get Usopp and Luffy! They might be hurt!" Chopper said as he hurried behind Robin down the stairs.
Sanji snorted inelegantly. "I doubt they're hurt, Chopper," he muttered as he followed the little reindeer. Luffy was made of rubber after all and Usopp had gone through worse than falling down a hole and landing on a stone floor. Though, admittedly, he would most likely milk the hell out of it.
By the time the rest of the crew had gotten down into the hole, Luffy and Usopp had come around and were looking around at where they landed. It seemed to be some sort of hallway. There were unlit torches nearby on the walls. The stone that made up the wall were full of carvings depicting different sea animals, both big and small. Every single animal had a jewel imbedded in its eye and was painted with bright colors, though Sanji couldn't help but notice that Elephant Trunk Tuna were not red with blue eyes.
"The fact that this is underground must have protected the paint unlike the pottery up in the cave," Robin mused as she put a hand on the wall she was standing beside. The large whale she was beside had been painted green. "Though they weren't very accurate with the colors they decided to use."
"Are those real jewels for eyes?" Nami asked, eyes sparkling just like the gems were. "We might get a payday out of this yet!" She quickly went to the nearest carving which had a diamond in the eye and started trying to pry it out.
Zoro scoffed and looked down at the dark passageway. Neither direction had any visible turns or even doors. It was just a single passage that disappeared. "What is this place anyway?"
"Gee, Marimo, you can't even recognize a hallway when you see one?" Sanji drawled as he took out his lighter and lit the nearest torch. They would definitely need the light in here. The fire reflected off of the different gem stones, making the walls sparkle slightly.
"I know what a hallway is, bastard," Zoro growled, his grip tightening on the swords at his waist. "But this place is supposed to be deserted."
"Like the artifacts in the cave this structure appears to be quite old. It was probably abandoned a while ago and we're only now discovering it again," Robin surmised as Sanji lit the other torch and handed it to her. He'd rather someone smart be in charge of the fire and source of light.
"Hey guys! Look what I found!"
The whole crew turned at their captain's excited voice. He was running towards them from the shadows, with a hand keeping his hat in place. When had he even slipped away? Suddenly, a deep rumbling sound echoed through the halls, getting much closer. Luffy ran straight past them and kept going. "Hurry!"
Chopper blinked after him before turning back to face the way Luffy had come from. Then, a huge metal ball caught the torch light. It was rolling right for them and taking up the whole hallway. "Gaaaah!"
The crew booked it after their captain. "What did you do!?"
"Hehe, sorry!"
"It must have been some sort of ancient trap," Robin supplied as she ran.
"Goddamn! Why do you always have to get us into these messes, idiot?"
Zoro growled. "Stop complaining and just run!"
"Don't tell me what to do!"
"Look! A door!"
Luffy skidded to a stop and jumped into the open doorway. The rest of the crew followed him into the darkness, without paying much attention to where they were going. As a result they all were suddenly tumbling down into the dark as the floor they assumed was there, turned out to not exist. "Aaaaaahhhhh!"
