Chapter Thirty Six
The Catacombs: Part Two
"Here it is. Finally."
An old man in long black robes decorated with gray sashes and a large E on one of his shoulder guards sighed as he bent down and picked up a black chest.
He had a short bandana tied around his bald head and a heavily scarred right eye. He turned to his comrade and nodded, the other man also had black robes but the sashes were blue and purple, his shoulder guard also had an N inscribed as opposed to an E.
"We're all set then? Ilan?"
The Elder Sage simply nodded "We've got to head back-"
The pair turned quickly, feeling powerful discharges of magical energy all throughout the catacombs.
"Again…"
Ilan shook his head and moved over to his ally "We have to go, whatever is going on down here doesn't concern us…Freen?"
Freen closed his eyes "There is something…or someone…familiar, here."
Ilan tilted his head as Freen took a few steps forward, his eyes opening quickly "Janie!"
Breathing deeply Shinon looked over the horizon, focusing on the Regalshin Stronghold, bringing Gore Eye up he closes one eye and allows his other to become Gore Eye. Using the bow he is able to peer across vast distances like Janaff of the hawk tribe, except even farther. He surveys the town plaza outside of the stronghold and notices King Gaelon, Queen Iseil, King Gra'Tisk and Queen Yi'Pyre acknowledging the people with their guard behind them.
"Why are you so…boring?" Shinon grinned as he then moved to Gorm, the giant man and his wyvern stood near the Regalshin King and Queen. "Boring? If I were to kill anyone like this…what would be the point? I like a challenge."
"You are a strange man…"
"I remember you saying something about me being more worthy than that crazed lunatic Unotch. Now shut up, I'm workin here."
Uhnie appeared next to Shinon "Hey…what's up."
"Not much, just a royal visit from Sarhara, people freaking out and singing their praises to the Kings and Queens and other bullshit."
Uhnie smiled and kissed Shinon on the cheek "That means all is well for us…any idea where we go?"
Shinon put down Gore Eye and turned to Uhnie "Soren and Mia were heading to Pozem…and while I'd like nothing more than to join with them…we need to find out why the military turned on us…what Orkra told us is nothing but lies, hell even she knows it."
Uhnie nodded "Soren and Mia have traversed Sarhara and Anondye with a small stop in Numengate…where do we start?"
Leah leapt up onto the roof with the pair "We won't make it far across Regalshin should they turn their eyes on us, Numengate is literally right there."
Shinon nodded as he stood and helped Uhnie up "Then we've got a set destination…"
"Also, Orkra is coming with us." Leah stated to which Uhnie smiled "Hey, that nearly evens the men to women odds, it is fine with me."
Shinon sighed "She did help us…and…I don't need to explain anything, sure, let's get a move on."
Inside Zihark turned to Orkra, fully armed again she glanced at Zihark "What?"
"You don't need to push yourself to come with us…we're skilled, we can cover you in a fight."
She shook her head "If I just sit around and do nothing I'll spend too much time thinking on what has happened to everything, Soren and Mia, the Regalshin Army I've so faithfully served for most of my life…"
"And yourself…" She kept her eye on Zihark as she sheathed a blade before nodding "And myself…"
She walked over to Zihark "I'm beyond capable in a fight; I'll do whatever it takes to find out why this happened."
Zihark grinned as they exited the building "No doubts there, I saw you back in Ukla Cave, we'll be just fine."
Orkra came to a stop with Zihark following suit a few steps later. The Hero smiled "I'm really lucky to have met you Zihark…"
"Hmm, I should say the same, you've allowed me something I haven't allowed myself since the Mad King's War…and I'm eternally grateful for that."
They heard Shinon call for them, Zihark turned as Orkra approached and kissed him on the cheek before continuing on her way. He smiled and followed her.
Tearing her lance out, Kay'Shera watches the last of the Dune Guard assailants fall to the ground, dead. The troop just finished another skirmish and Janie is certain a source of massive magical aura is ahead.
Following the constant branching paths The Catacombs finally descended into one large tunnel that continued into the black depths. Proceeding slowly and silently the group eventually found what seemed to be the end where the tunnel opened up into a large circular chamber, the level they stood on ran around the perimeter of the chamber, essentially a large ring with staircases connecting it to the rings above and below.
"What the hell is all this?" Mikel asks as the troop peers down towards the bottom where torches have been set up and people move around quickly.
"Did we reach the end?" Soren asked, turning to Janie who opens her eyes and nods "All the tunnels seem to come out here and we're effectively under the sea."
Several members swallowed hard and proceeded down makeshift stairs along the wall.
"What was the point of this chamber?"
Janie turned to Soren and sighed "I wish I knew…I'm sure Ilan does and possibly some crazy history buffs…"
As they moved, voices from the massive room below echoed and Mia's ears perked up. Quickly she tapped Soren and whispered "Meloi."
Sure enough at the center of the base level, Meloi sat there holding the Item in his grip and looking at an empty stand before him. He placed the item on it and held his hands out as he began to speak in an unknown language. The other members of the Dune Guard fell to their knees and gripped their ears as they began screaming.
Soren's eyes widened but before he could say anything a wave of ear piercing sounds reached them and the troop fell to their knees as well.
"Ushnae!" Lyle called out as he walked into the cave, it was very dank, some light came in but if there was some kind of home built here like Freen's Keep in the Negative Wastes its long gone.
Orgoth and Rhogam entered next followed by Versha, Pesh and To'Eltz.
"Strange…its barren…how did you meet Ushnae here again?"
Lyle turned "Travel…I heard rumors of a man who lived on his own and went to see for myself…I was young, any little thing interested me…ah!"
Lyle got down on one knee and picked up a key "What is this?"
The others gathered around, it was very old and rusted; To'Eltz shook his head "It can't open anything in that condition."
As Lyle let out a frustrated sigh, Orgoth turned to see what looked like a book, partially buried in the dirt.
Pesh came to his side as he picked it up, the knight turned "I don't recognize this writing…"
Pesh tilted his head "Ancient magical language…used in the time of the Fell Lord. You know, the Dark Days of War."
Orgoth nodded "Why would this be here? Lyle?"
The swordmaster walked over "Ushnae was always a strange one…but I never thought him capable of reading that kind of language."
"What can it be used for?" Versha asked as she joined them.
Pesh shrugged "Apparently certain verses when combined with the 'stone of no origin' can summon and channel spirits of the dead."
At that To'Eltz twitched but no one noticed as Orgoth opened the book, the covers were broken and most of the pages were worn beyond legibility or just torn out.
"Stone of no origin…you don't mean the Orichalcum?"
Versha smiled "Your education continues to astound me Orgoth. Yes, rocks believed to come from beyond our world's skies. The truth of what they can do is unknown as most of them were used after the Dark Days of War.
"The Warring Ages." Lyle muttered as he walked away and let out a huge breath.
"It's interesting but doesn't tell us much."
Rhogam who remained silent thought of the old ages of never-ending war his comrades discussed. "I'd hate our world to fall into another era like those."
The rest of the group gave their affirmations though Pesh kept his eyes on the ruined tome as Orgoth closed it. The group broke apart and Versha sighed.
"I guess it's a dead end then. Ushnae isn't here and it doesn't look like anyone has come this way in years."
The group decided to examine the rest of the cave once more, just to cover their bases when they heard a scream. Rhogam turned "That came from outside! Let's go!" he charged out followed by Orgoth and To'Eltz. Lyle came to a stop and turned to Versha and Pesh "Well?"
Versha shrugged "I can't fight." Pesh just looked away and Lyle sighed before joining the others outside.
Dent threw Eminse to the ground and covered her as Telm dove aside, a large gash across one of his arms from a Griffon rider overhead. Hectain swung his axe around "Kill them! They'll interfere with…there! There they are!"
The Griffon Knight was distracted as Lyle's group emerged from the cave, half his forces moved to attack them while the rest continued to attack Dent and Telm.
Orgoth was pushed back as an axe bounced off his armor and saw one person standing with no weapon out avoiding the Griffons while another was lying on the ground "Lyle! Someone has to get over there and cover them!"
Lyle turned "To'Eltz!" the trickster quickly disengaged from the Griffon Rider that he dragged off the mount and charged towards the people.
Rhogam swung his axe, tearing into a griffon and causing it to fall over, throwing off its rider. "He won't make it in time!"
A griffon screeched and charged right down on Telm who closed his eyes just as something else shot out from behind him and cut through the rider. The man fell dead and the griffon screeched again as it flew away.
The group turned as the savior landed on all fours. Rhogam raised an eyebrow "A blue cat?"
Lyle's eyes widened "Ranulf?"
With the silence came groggy awakening as the troop stood, Meloi grabbed the Item from the pedestal, it now gave off a powerful blue light. He smiled as he examined it "Meloi!" he turned and saw Soren, giving the sage a wide smile he held the Item above his head "Soren…can I tell you a story?"
"Never!" The Archsage called out as he leapt from the wall and brought out his blade.
A rock wall stopped Soren's blade as Meloi continued to speak "The Dune Guard did not break away from the Sarharan Royal Hierarchy for any sort of self-interest."
The rest of the Dune Guard and Soren and Mia's Troop woke up and seeing Meloi and Soren fighting began attacking each other. Verrine, Arcthunder and countless Stalagmites shot between both troops as the armed units charged each other spinning their weapons.
Soren tore his blade out and spinning he released a burst of air destroying the rock wall. Meloi was in the air now smiling "No it was all an elaborate plot created by Mistress. She gave us the platform and power to separate from Sarhara and become a real terrorist threat. All to show how weak willed the King and Queen of that time were…"
Soren shot another Arcwind towards Meloi who held his hand out, stones from all around collided in front of him to form a shield and brush off the gale. As Meloi landed one of his arms was covered in earth and he held it in front of him, catching Soren's blade.
"It worked…the Mistress and her Order were then looked to for answers so we pretended that her forces decimated some of our terrorist activities and with the Dune Guard out of the way that group ascended! However…she needed to solidify her power…"
Soren leapt away "So…she cut all ties with you…"
Meloi smiled and pointed to the gray half of his face. "Her armies stormed my headquarters and killed everyone, they took half my face with them before destroying the headquarters…I should've realized nothing would be that easy. She played me for a fool but no I can have my revenge on her…The Midnight may no longer care what I do…but The Altar most certainly does!"
"Who is this…Mistress exactly?"
Meloi smiled as Soren came to a stop in front of him. Whether or not Meloi was going to answer, arrows littered the battled causing the two to look above. Zey'Yu and Fre'Han's forces shot into the room and engaged the Dune Guard and the troop, Meloi stood in place as people fell dead and blood splattered the cave floor.
"What will you do Soren? Continue our bout?"
Soren spun his blade again "You're not leaving her alive. To'Eltz trusted me to retrieve that item…and that is exactly what I'm going to do."
"Stop!" Re'Zin called out as he spotted Kraener, the cowardly Archduke screamed for help causing several armed soldiers to enter the hall and charge Re'Zin. The nomad pulled out a large arrow and leapt over a guard before jamming his weapon into an oncoming guard. Lifting the man over he tossed him into the other that just started turning around.
Kraener screamed again and ran off as Re'Zin leapt and kicked the last guard across the head; wrestling his weapon away he smashed the fallen guard in the side of the head with the hilt knocking him out.
Re'Zin continued to charge forward barely missing the Archduke's jacket as he rounded a corner, the roof exploded and Midnight 6 hit the ground his bladed arm cut into Re'Zin and the nomad stumbled back. "Elimination." Midnight 6 charged as the swift nomad kicked off the wall and spun overhead before continuing towards Kraener. Midnight 6 skidded to a halt and turned "No use." Kraener turned seeing Re'Zin closing in and Midnight 6 behind him "No! No! Someone! Help me!"
With a long leap, Re'Zin tackled Kraener to the ground and Midnight 6 barreled over them and into a wall "Where is Rey Oshwa!"
"I don't know!" "Where is she!?" "I don't know! I swear!" Re'Zin grabbed an arrow out of his quiver and stuck in Kraener's arm. "Swear to me!" Kraener continued to scream as Re'Zin impaled his leg with an arrow.
Midnight 6 appeared at the hole in the wall and approached the pair "Elimination."
"Under…underground…under the…mansion." Re'Zin looked up in time to see the Midnight's blade glow and leapt away.
"The mansion…under…under the…" Midnight 6's blade cut into Kraener and exploded, tossing Re'Zin down the hall and into a wall.
Ranulf leapt high into the air; his claws dug into a Griffon Rider, the man lost control of his mount and began tossing wildly in the air. Thanks to the Laguz' timely arrival, To'Eltz reached the three and picked up a stray lance Dent sighed "Axes…Telm is swords."
To'Eltz cursed and noticed a stray axe "I'll cover these two, go." As Dent took off To'Eltz knelt next to Telm and a woman "Injured?" he took out a staff and proceeded to heal them.
Hectain shot down and crashed into Orgoth, throwing the man into the air before whipping back around, his axe clashing with Lyle's blades. The swordmaster flipped away, his third blade cutting through the Griffon's body as it took off.
Rhogam continued to evade the Griffon strikes and took out his bow and arrow. Upon doing so the flying units began to move farther away "Hey! That's not supposed to happen!" Firing off a few bolts that caught one retreating, it fell, the rider was thrown off and hit the ground, hard.
Pesh emerged from the cave and inhaled, he shot across the ground past Rhogam and leapt high into the air, spinning he kicked a rider off their mount and fell back to the ground before exhaling. "How the hell did you…"
As Hectain continued to hassle Lyle, Orgoth began moving towards the others as Dent returned with an axe "Just stay down!" To'Eltz called as he turned and brought his sword out. "Orgoth! These two could use some cover!"
Dent and Telm looked at To'Eltz then off to the side where Orgoth approached. Eminse brought her head up and saw him; the knight came to a sudden stop "Eminse…"
"Look out!" To'Eltz screamed as a Griffon Rider shot by, striking Orgoth with a hammer, shattering a large portion of his armor and throwing him to the ground.
Leena and Mikel continue to tear through the Dune Guard as Tyazaer and Mia held off the approaching Altar assassins. "Did they follow us down here?"
Janie leapt away from a pillar tearing out of the ground "I didn't sense anything…I can't say!"
Kay'Shera flew by Janie and impaled the earth sage attacking her before taking to the sky again as arrows tried to reach her.
Wyre remained up high and continued to rain down lightning on the enemy forces that were busy killing each other. He struck an Altar assassin, knocking him to the ground and stunning him long enough for a Dune Guard to run over and kill him.
"I could care less for either of them." Wyre muttered as he continued aiding the enemy forces in taking each other down.
Wayu held her shield up and landed near Janie as an axe struck it. Pushing back with all her force the warrior stumbled away, Janie turned and several balls of black matter formed around her "Luna!" they all shot through the warrior and he fell dead.
"Fre'Han! Cover that side!" Zey'Yu called out; the man nodded and moved several feet, bringing up his bow and arrow he struck down Dune Guard soldiers quickly, freeing up more Altar assassins to strike at the troop.
Tyazaer rode by, her blade cut through Fre'Han's arm and he stumbled back "Zey'Yu! I need some help over here."
The woman turned as Tyazaer rounded back. Quickly Zey'Yu shot towards the paladin and tackled her off her steed.
Kay'Shera turned upon shooting into the sky again "Did someone just say…Zey'Yu?"
She surveyed the battle field as Mikel and Leena struck down Altar archers "Watch yourself Kay'Shera!" Leena called out.
The woman remained floating in place looking around at all the fallen soldiers and the ones still fighting "Zey'Yu…" Kay'Shera reached into her pocket and pulled out a locket.
A large first of stone struck Soren and he skidded several feet away before unleashing branded fire that burned through Meloi's earth armor.
"Since you are in such a story telling mood Meloi…what is the Item?"
Meloi glanced at the glowing item in his fist and put it away before smiling "It goes by the name of Orichalcum, an infinite stone of unknown origin that can house a dead soul…"
Soren narrowed his eyes "Orichalcum? What soul did you draw into it?"
Meloi smiled "There are countless renowned war criminals and generals that died down in these Catacombs! I had half a mind to restore one of them to their full glory…but another power pushed through them and entered the stone on its own…I know not who but something tells me it was one of the Fell Lord's students. If that is the case…I am truly unstoppable."
"The Fell Lord's students…you mean Gashuuka, Meltraitis, Seino, Drake and Telray?"
Meloi nodded "Regardless of which now resides within Orichalcum…I've won!"
Meloi raised his foot and slammed it on the ground; a crack formed and began to ripple through the entire chamber. Up the walls and across the floor were men fell and died.
"What did you do!?"
"You must fight in order to survive Soren! It is the fundamental, unchangeable and basic law of humanity!" Meloi shot at the Archsage again as they engaged in battle with the chamber threatening to collapse as the cracks began to splinter into various directions and grow larger.
With a palm on his back, Lyle was sent into the air by Pesh and landed behind Hectain. The Griffon Knight stood "I'm under orders to bring your head in!" Axe in hand Hectain began attacking, Lyle easily pushed the weapon away with his two blades but it became increasingly tougher as the Griffon began to fly wildly and spin in the sky. Lyle nearly fell off, Hectain seized the opportunity and brought his weapon into Lyle's left arm, dropping one blade Lyle fell and gripped his arm. Just then the griffon banked hard and Lyle was flung off, Ranulf shot into the air and grabbed the swordmaster before landing and throwing him on the ground.
"Ranulf…" the cat stopped and turned, head tilting "I'm sorry…do I know you?"
"Soren…Mia…my friends…" Lyle muttered to which Ranulf got closer to the swordmaster "Really? Where are they?"
Hectain shot at Ranulf; the cat quickly grabbed Lyle by his shirt collar and leapt aside again.
Pesh continued to toss Griffon Riders to their deaths as Rhogam fired arrows into the sky, Dent protected Eminse as Telm covered To'Eltz while he healed the fallen Orgoth.
Ranulf turned again and shot into the air, rolling into a ball the blue blur shot past Hectain, tearing through the griffon it fell out of the sky, Hectain leapt off and landed safely, his ruined helmet fell off and he turned to face Ranulf.
"What the fuck are you?"
Ranulf licked his paw before rearing up "I'm Ranulf, right hand…hmm…I can't add anything on here…but I trust that will be enough?"
Hectain laughed and charged the cat; his axe slammed into the ground as Ranulf leapt over him and tore into his back, biting his shoulder before kicking away. Hectain turned and swung his weapon, tossing it. The cat leapt over it cleanly spinning in midair before landing on all fours and shooting at Hectain. Once against assuming the form of a ball he crashed into Hectain's chest, cracking the armor and forcing several pieces to break off. The Griffon Knight felt the pain in his chest as some bones snapped and he stumbled back struggling to breathe.
The other Griffon Riders saw this and called for a retreat, Hectain looked up at them as they flew away and cursed, Ranulf shot at him and raked his claws across neck and face. Landing as Hectain fell dead.
The battlefield now barren, Versha emerged from the cave and whistled "Wow…" Ranulf changed into his humanoid appearance and she gasped "Did you…did you see that Pesh?"
He nodded "You should've seen him fight."
Ranulf helped Lyle up, the swordmaster grinned "You are much more impressive than in any story…"
Ranulf nodded and turned to see Hectain's dead body "I'm actually rather surprised myself…I have a history with not faring well against big guys in armor…glad I finally broke that streak."
"Lyle!" the pair ran over to To'Eltz who stood up from the injured Orgoth who was moving again and sat up slowly, he nodded to Ranulf and thanked him before turning to Dent and Telm, they parted allowing Eminse to walk past them.
Orgoth shook his head "Eminse…" he still couldn't believe it. She embraced him and they shared a deep kiss.
As Tyazaer stood she kicked Zey'Yu, the whisper grabbed her leg and tossed the paladin away before pulling out two short knives. Tyazaer flipped over and pulled out her lance, spinning it and striking with the hook end first. Zey'Yu avoided it as Fre'Han treated himself with an elixir and trained his arrow on Tyazaer.
Kay'Shera snapped out of it and shot at Fre'Han, tossing him over, Zey'Yu turned "You!" Tyazaer struck the whisper across the back as she leapt into the air and landed on Kay'Shera's roc.
Kay'Shera turned to face her, blade stopping at her neck; each of them stared at each other in shock. Kay'Shera held up a locket and Zey'Yu absentmindedly felt the one in her jacket.
"Kay'Shera."
As the roc knight opened her mouth an arrow caught her in the chest, Zey'Yu's eyes widened as Kay'Shera nearly fell off the roc "Michalis! Keep her away! Understand!" the roc screeched and banked away, Zey'Yu leapt off and landed in front of Fre'Han "You're alright…good…I-"
Zey'Yu's blade sunk into his neck, Altar assassins standing nearby turned in shock. Fre'Han stared at Zey'Yu in surprise and could not comprehend what was happening as he hit the floor dead.
Mia saw that and shook her head as Zey'Yu walked away, Tyazaer was lost as well, they were just trying to kill each other. The assassins began to call her a traitor and charged her, Tyazaer moved in along with her steed, leaping back on she brought her hook into one the assassins and swung the body around, knocking aside several others as lightning from Wyre struck another.
Alsyia came to a stop near Zey'Yu with Tyazaer calling out "I'm not sure what's going on but come on!" The assassin nodded slowly and joined her as they charged away from approaching Altar assassins.
The sage turned as an assassin charged him; Wayu appeared and ran the man through "I've got your back, as always!"
Wyre smiled and turned back to the main battle where Mia and Leena finished with the last of the Dune Guard. Leena turned, all set to deal with the Altar when Mia grabbed her shoulder and pointed at the walls of the chamber. Leena looked up and saw the cracks dripping "Shit."
A large fist struck Soren followed by a gust of air in a concentrated ball slamming into Meloi's gut causing him to choke and fall to one knee, he raised his hand and Soren stuck his blade through the open palm.
Meloi clenched his teeth as he used his other arm to punch Soren in the stomach again and then leapt, bringing his knee into the sage's chin and tossing him aside.
"Soren! The chamber is collapsing! We have to go!" Janie called as she landed and raised her hands causing a platform to shoot up and throw Meloi high into the air before he landed on his back.
Soren nodded "Everyone! Gather around Janie!"
The troop moved in close, fending off the remaining Altar assassins, Soren turned as Michalis landed with a severely injured Kay'Shera. Tyazaer joined them and Soren noticed another woman jump off the horse and move towards Kay'Shera. "Who are you?"
"Doesn't matter! Can any of you heal? Kay'Shera is wounded!"
Janie lifted her arms as a rock shot across the open space and struck her. Soren glanced over at Meloi and tossed his blade, the Archsage dove as the blade cut into his side.
"Janie! We need you now! Janie!"
"We got it." Soren looked up as two men landed and raised their arms "ArcPillar!" a circular platform around them formed and shot up quickly, leaving Meloi and the assassins behind. As one man kept his hands above his head the other began to make a spinning motion with them before raising them up again causing the ceiling above to burst and giving them clearance to the surface.
Meloi smiled as the chamber exploded and water began to fill it, washing the dead bodies away and drowning the remaining soldiers, he reached into his pocket and his smile vanished "Orichalcum? Orichalcum!" he screamed as raging water rushed over him and filled the chamber to the brim.
"Kino…is there a reason you called for me? Certainly not for tea." Iltar'Elm sat with his arms crossed as Kino put down his empty cup of tea and sighed "I'm afraid you've been lied to…"
Iltar'Elm raised an eyebrow "What?"
"Re'Zin was never home…apparently he's been on a cross nation trip…he assassinated Kraener the Archduke of Myillheim yesterday."
Iltar'Elm shook his head "Impossible…why would he?"
"Why would he indeed…he never asked for anything, the perfect soldier, the most loyal man…gaining your trust to use it."
Iltar'Elm shook his head he opened his mouth but stopped "Wait. Archduke? What happened to the Archduchess Rey Oshwa?"
Kino shrugged "I'm a sword instructor in Corelis, the matters of other nation's politics don't concern me…I need to ask, were you involved in this…at all?"
The sniper laughed "You think I sent him on this mission? For all I knew, Rey Oshwa was still in charge in Myillheim, I've never heard of the Kraener character before."
Kino nodded "Very well…you may go…"
Iltar'Elm stood and walked away as Kino poured himself more tea.
Opening his eyes, Re'Zin looked around, a very dark and dirty room; he blinked to clear his vision. A door opened and a man walked in.
"I've been arrested haven't I? For a crime I didn't commit…I didn't kill the Archduke…"
The man chuckled as he reached into his robe "I know you didn't…you were looking for Rey Oshwa…that is why you are here…the public knows nothing of Kraener's death or your involvement…you were never here…though just to be sure we had to kill the woman from the bar you spoke to."
Re'Zin's eyes widened "Who are you? How does something like you exist? We're-"
"At peace?" the man took a golden watch out of his robe and smiled "No…we…" he gestured to Midnight 6 and three other Midnights as well as a man with large wings and another with long silver hair and a strange unit covering one of his eyes.
"We…are…peace…"
