Late update! My bad!
Few things to get out of the way
With characters who aren't human I refer to them as it sometimes, hope that doesn't get annoying but that is how I refer to Kanahana (a vampire) and the Midnights (living armor) with a few exceptions like the heroic vampire Tyse who I refer to as a he.
I know it's way late to state that but just wanted to get it out there because in the coming chapters I refer to A LOT of things as it.
Also I sometimes refer to characters by their class though sometimes I use multiples like Soren. I've called him an Archsage (his New Emissaries class) and a Tactician (his Ymarkteg class) multiple times but I'm certain everyone gets it.
In the future I have a few scenes of only class references for a very important and somewhat personal reason. That is why I constantly mention the OC Sheets, every character is assigned a class on their for reference.
Really late to say that but if anyone has any questions about why I say somethings or write somethings some way please ask and I'll be more than happy to explain. I've found a few sentences from some characters that I don't even know why they're there and have deleted them occasionally.
BTW two more references to other works in this chapter, I'll let you know what they are in the next chapter unless you figure it out
Chapter Forty Nine
Grove Tower: Part One
The Fell Lord stood and looked over his commanders, Norad Jyuugo, Kanahana, Asai Versha, Kino, Ushnae and the Midnight's Apothecary.
"Our army of the undead has all but conquered Numengate…even now I can feel their numbers continue to grow. The time to begin anew is coming…"
The commanders bowed as the Fell Lord turned to the sunrise behind him. "I also feel that those…beings…the one who have been obstructions this whole time have begun to move. Clearly they seek to bring the conflict to us…a mistake…"
"What shall we do my Fell Lord?"
The Fell Lord turned and pointed to Kanahana, Norad Jyuugo, Asai Versha and Ushnae "We know where they have to go…be there and bring the last four actors to this grand performance. Once our curtain falls the tragedy will begin."
The Grove Tower Division of the New Emissaries comprised of Soren, Mia, Wyre, Wayu, Leah, Cadeera, Tyse Erent and Boyd continued moving across Anondye, at the moment they marched through a small, somewhat dense forest with the dark facts deeply embedded in all their minds. Whatever waited for them at the Grove Tower was something truly threatening to all of them.
The New Emissaries split up from Castle Anondye early in the morning with the Desert and Stone Tower Divisions heading East and West while Eien vanished with the Frost Tower Division as planned. There was no more time for second thoughts; they would all see the coming challenges through, to the end.
Wayu glanced over to Wyre, while there was not much talk along the way; Wyre had yet to say a single word.
Boyd sighed and scratched the back of his head "That is quite the messed up roster."
Mia nodded, she finished filling in the Reaver about the Midnight commanders. Boyd remembered the vampires of Hitenticul and he knew of Kanahana.
"I still can't believe they managed to bring him back…I guess we're lucky Wyre came along right?"
Mia nodded before glancing back at Wyre; vampires were very vulnerable to lightning magic, whenever they came face to face with Kanahana again the vampire would not escape.
"Should he have improved his resistance by some integration with the Elder Magic…I'm still here and every bit as ruthless." Soren nodded to Tyse Erent as Cadeera sighed "I would rather not have to see you lose your mind again…but it is a great boon to us in troubling times."
"We'll need to pull out all the stops to win the coming battles, no matter what." Leah added to which Mia nodded.
Soren kept his eyes forward and recalled the violent battle between Kanahana and Tyse Erent beneath the Numengate Citadel.
The group came to a stop upon reaching a clearing, before them was a small stream, past that the Grove Tower pointed towards the sky with the vague green shield surrounding it.
Mia brought out Balmung and approached the barrier, she wasn't too comfortable with the fully awakened weapon but she only had to use it once. With a quick strike the green shield seemed to falter before shattering. The group moved quickly as the barrier pulled itself together again behind them.
Soren looked at the gaping entrance and turned to his allies "This is it."
They all nodded and entered the Grove Tower.
"Deshler…what brings you here? Are you well?" The short man nodded and smiled nervously "Yes my king…I'm sure you know of the liaisons from Anondye…they are arriving soon…yes?"
The King nodded "Yes, I expected this sooner or later…have our troops begun preparing?"
Deshler smiled again "Yes my King, they have been coming together since yesterday, arming themselves…are you certain it is wise to-"
The King laughed "Of course Deshler…I am King Hrodath of Pozem and the Midnight have brought war to us all. I will not back down from this challenge. This continent will not suffer like it has in the past as long as I command it."
Deshler nodded and turned to leave just as the Queen entered the chamber, he bowed and left as she approached her husband.
"You don't have to go along with the army…you know that, right?"
Hrodath smiled "Gemma, I can't let our men charge ahead to their deaths alone…they need to know we all stand together…everyone is at risk."
Outside of the royal chamber, Deshler sighed "This had better work…I'll not be a part of another glorious failure."
As the man continued through the halls he thought of the shadow that was undoubtedly nearby. He never enjoyed being so closely tied with the Altar but the Mistress demanded that the alliance was absolutely necessary and while it has been key to unknowingly subjugating the land, Deshler could not get over the lurking eyes that never left him.
Taer'Vix stood in the shadows with a smile, watching Deshler quiver in the unknown of his presence. The time was drawing near and his desire to kill was growing stronger.
Carefully, Soren's group walked through the first hall of the Grove Tower. The building was ornate yet extremely old fashioned. If Soren had to guess the structure was designed from the Fell Lord's memories of architecture during his time.
No one was sure what to expect upon entering the building, Mia thought it would be filled with Midnight seeking to protect the Tower while Wayu expected one of the remaining Midnight commanders to attack them the instant they stepped inside.
"We've got three people with advanced senses here…are you guys picking anything up?" Boyd asked looking from Soren to Mia and then to Tyse.
The vampire narrowed his eyes, peering into the dark corners before shaking his head "No one…even if they were standing still I'd be able to hear their breathing."
The group approached a winding staircase, after exchanging a few looks they nodded and began to ascend.
"I trust you all can handle this?" Ike turned to Eien and nodded. The Frost Tower stood before them, Eien remained concerned but the nagging feeling that she should join the Desert Tower Division continued to gnaw at her.
"Whatever is in there, I guarantee you that we're ready Eien, but something is speaking to you and I feel that you should listen to it."
Eien looked from Ike to Mertre who nodded then to the rest of the group preparing to enter the tower. "I wish you all the best."
As Eien vanished, Ike turned to the rest of his group which included Rhogam, Tyazaer, Zihark, Orkra, Titania and Ranulf.
"Are we all set?"
Rhogam grinned "I'm more ready for this than anything I've done before."
"Remember that our task doesn't end with the tower." Zihark added to which Tyazaer agreed "The corruption in Regalshin must be rooted out…we know Gorm has something to do with it but we need to find out who the Duke is. We can't trust the Altar past defeating the Midnight."
"If I recall correctly the Queen of Sarhara is a member of the Royal Ring. So the King or Queen of Regalshin…or maybe even both are playing a role in this as well, correct?"
Orkra nodded to Titania "Gaelon and Iseil have been righteous leaders since their coronation…I don't want to believe it but the peace of Ymarkteg is not the primary concern of the Altar."
Ranulf scratched the back of his head and sighed "Either way they command Regalshin's army. While we let the liaisons do their political work, we've got a much more pressing matter before us."
"Well put, Ranulf. Let's go." Ike brought out Dyeshein and approached the tower barrier, with one strike it fell apart and the group moved forward.
"I was wondering when you lot would show up."
Soren and Mia's group came to a stop in the center of the second floor. They all covered each other's blind spots and searched for whoever it was that spoke.
Leah clenched his teeth "I know that voice."
"There are some things about the Midnight that you do not know yet and I'd like to provide this information as you continue through this lovely tower."
"Kanahana." Wyre whispered before looking up to the ceiling "Where are you!?"
"All in due time, my friend…"
Soren glanced over to the rest of the group and nodded, as they continued to walk Kanahana began speaking.
"I know you all learned the truth behind Midnight 3 and how he was actually Murawk, brought back from the dead…again. You must all have been wondering…how?"
After a short silence Kanahana continued "The Midnights are all dead warriors that we combine with demonic armor and weaponry from the Dark Days of War. Remnants that contain blood and magic of the Fell Lord's soldiers and students…with the Midnight Apothecary's powerful magic we fuse the dead bodies and the cursed armor as one being. That is how we create the Hours of Midnight and you lot have successfully brought down nine of them. I warn you now that the remaining three will be more than you are ready for."
"Where are the rest of those Midnights holed up?" Boyd asked to which Kanahana laughed.
"One is currently in service to Ushnae while another is nearing completion with the last one…well; we just found the twelfth and final host. Soon you'll meet him."
The group ascended another staircase to a small hallway that led to a massive door.
Cadeera took a step forward "Here…if Kanahana is anywhere, it's past this door...as is this massive magical force…the Orichalcum."
The group glanced at each other again, Mia turned to Boyd who grinned before barreling into the door, smashing it open.
The group ran in behind him just as Kanahana turned to face them.
"Of black and blood, we serve the night…warriors of Ulyus we command dark might and for the Order of Rein we forever fight. An oath to our master that means little now, don't you think Tyse?"
The vampire moved past Soren "Our last match was interrupted; this one won't end until you are on the floor…dead."
Kanahana moved aside to reveal the Green Orichalcum "I've been dead before…not a fun experience…I'll show you all what it does the cruel beings…it makes us less than man, less than living."
Kanahana waved his hand over the Green Orichalcum causing it to shoot out green sparks. From the ground, countless vampires rose up, revived members of the Order of Rein.
Soren pulled out his tome "New Emissaries! Attack!"
With a wave of his hand, brilliant lightning magic shot from Wyre into one of the vampires. As it screeched Tyse flew by and ripped its neck open before moving onto another.
Boyd barreled into one, knocking it over before standing and turning to embed his great axe into the creature, as he kicked it to the floor an orb of light appeared above him. He leapt away as Cadeera brought her arm down, a white beam burning a hole clean through the fallen vampire.
Leah and Mia made a beeline for Kanahana who stood in one place with a smile. Any time a vampire approached the pair it was blown aside by Soren's magic who in turn was covered by Wayu. The halberdier was quickly and easily running her spear through any vampire that came too close to Soren. Upon pulling her spear out of one of the creature's necks she noticed more rising from the ground. "How many are there?"
Soren shook his head as he blasted another away "The Order of Rein was capable of waging war against an entire continent's army. Suffice to say there are a lot of them."
Kanahana grabbed Ein'Tosen as it approached and kicked Mia away before throwing the blade aside and leaping over Leah's strikes. The orange hair trueblade flipped over and made another series of attacks against the vampire's back. As Kanahana flew out of range he was blasted by Mia's purple flames. Shooting away, Leah pursued the vampire while Mia retrieved her blade and joined him.
Wyre found himself rolling along the ground following a brutal tackle from a vampire. As he looked up the creature approached him and screeched. Quickly Wyre brought his hand up and grabbed the creature's face as it tried to bite him. The thunder sage released a powerful surge and fried the vampire's face off before standing. He looked up to see Tyse taking on three at once. "Tyse! Give me some space!"
The vampire nodded and kicked the three before shooting away just as Wyre's Brave Bolt came in, killing two instantly while Tyse flew by like a bullet, taking out the last one.
Boyd leapt aside as a spear flew past him, jamming itself into a vampire's face. Following it up he lobbed the creature's head off before bracing himself as another rammed into him and threw him to the ground.
A whirlwind picked up the attacker and flung him towards Cadeera who released another wave of brilliant light magic that fried the vampire, ashes falling all around the White Valkyrie.
As Wayu retrieved her spear she helped Boyd up and the pair continued assaulting the vampires.
Leah yelled as he leapt into the air, Kanahana caught both blades and smiled "You've grown even more…I already know you aren't the frightened child from Hitenticul…but I've also evolved…you-"
Kanahana was cut off by Leah roaring and smashing his head into the vampire's. As Kanahana stumbled back in shock, Mia launched over Leah and slashed through the creature followed by Kanahana. The vampire regained himself and caught Leah's blades with his bare arms again, pushing the weapons aside, breaking Leah's guard. With a screech Kanahana jumped and shot both legs into Leah's chest knocking the air out of the trueblade and sending him across the room into a wall. The force of the impact reverberated through his spine.
Mia clenched her teeth and turned to strike at Kanahana again but the vampire ignored her purple flames and grabbed her by the neck. As he lifted her up he laughed before slamming her into the ground "This time I'll kill-"
Mia screamed, a torrent of purple flames shooting out of her mouth into Kanahana's face. The vampire screeched and flew away again, "My damned face has already been marred by Soren!" Kanahana pointed at the missing half of his face from their encounter at Pozem, the vampire's exposed right eye practically bulging out in rage "I'll not lose any more to you worms!"
"Where do you think you're going?" Kanahana came to a stop and turned around.
"I appreciate the gift of life you've given me…but I've got some very personal matters I must attend to."
The vampire stood still as the man approached him; he noticed that there was a metal plate with glowing red visors attached to his face.
"We did not revive you for you to continue your personal vendetta. We have a greater task for you, Kanahana."
The vampire smiled "I take orders from no one."
Another man whose face was obscured by large cloaks approached Kanahana "Soren."
The vampire tilted his head "How do you know that name?"
"Would you like to know more? Would you like another chance at him? Come with us."
"He was the one that killed you in the first place…right?"
Kanahana thought this over briefly before nodding "Yes, I will join you and put that man in the ground."
"This man is Norad Jyuugo and I am the Midnight's Apothecary, we will bring you to our continent and in return for giving you a chance at Soren…you will help realize our goal."
As they walked away, Kanahana followed "I can tell you two are powerful and whatever you have planned, I'm going to be on the winning side."
Roaring, Boyd's axe sunk into the ground after tearing through a vampire. The creature fell to the side as Boyd ripped his axe from the ground and spun around, catching another vampire and pinning it to the wall. The creature flailed and added another deep cut to the Reaver's arm before dying.
As Boyd backed away a pair of vampires slammed into him from behind and he hit the wall. Spitting blood he turned "Shit." Holding up his axe he stopped the four claws that were eager to tear him up "Cover!"
"On it!" Wyre yelled creating a large electrical ball and firing it over "Thoron!" it exploded behind the two, giving Boyd the leeway to push them away and dive aside towards Cadeera.
The White Valkyrie spun her physic staff and began healing Boyd as Tyse Erent came down on the two vampires and killed them.
"Cadeera!" Tyse called, she turned to see a vampire charge her until a blade sailed across the room into the creature's back. Acknowledging Soren, Cadeera returned to healing Boyd as powerful gales disrupted the vampires' flight patterns.
Wayu held her shield up and clenched her teeth as the weight of a vampire threatened to toss her over. With incredible force she pushed the beast away and impaled it. Withdrawing her spear she returned to Soren's side "For every one I take out three more seem to fill their place."
Soren glanced over to the rest of his group, Tyse was lost in a mess of six vampires while Boyd's powerful but open moves caused him to fall victim to more strikes. Wyre and Cadeera covered each other with their magic but the vampires were everywhere.
"Hold out for a bit more, I have an idea." At that Wayu smiled "I was hoping you'd say that."
Standing Leah shook his head and spotted Kanahana in the air, he also saw Mia jump up after him, her mighty blade being countered at every turn by Kanahana's claws.
The trueblade charged and leapt into the air to help his ally, seeing this Kanahana disengaged and flew around Mia. Leah crossed both his blades just as Kanahana slammed into him. Catching himself, Leah landed on his feet and skidded along the ground, before he could move three vampires surrounded him.
Cursing, he began to dispatch them; Mia attempted to aid him only to be cut off by several more vampires.
"You're all starting to get on my nerves!" Swinging a flaming Ein'Tosen she cleaved vampire after vampire into burning pieces.
"Wyre!" The sage turned just in time to see a vampire take a spear to the head. It got far too close for comfort; he turned towards the Halberd "Wayu!"
She fell to the ground as his magic shot past her and into a group of approaching vampires.
Rolling past him, Wayu picked up her spear "Soren has an idea, he needs you."
Wayu blocked a vampire and sunk her spear into its throat as Wyre nodded. The thunder sage continued to spread his Brave Bolt all around "What's the plan?"
Wayu swung her shield, bashing a vampire across the head, as the beast stumbled; Wyre shot it to death with his magic. Wayu turned and thrust her spear past Wyre, striking another vampire before kicking it off her weapon.
With a smile she turned towards Wyre "A really big storm…"
"Cadeera!" The Valkyrie created a swirl of white wind that burned the vampires' wings causing them to fall to the ground. Boyd and Tyse took the chance to kill the fallen vampires before they could stand again. She turned to Soren who thrust a tome at her "Can you pull this off."
After a few seconds of looking at it "Give a few minutes and I'll be with you."
Soren nodded and shot Arcwind at the ground, as he sailed through the air he slashed through a few vampires before hitting the ground.
Tyse turned but before he could say anything a loud screech came from the air followed by Kanahana tackling Tyse to the ground.
Cadeera and Tyse made eye contact as he struggled on the ground with Kanahana, the Valkyrie nodded to him and the vampire's eyes went blood red.
Releasing an extremely loud screech he punched Kanahana into the sky before shooting up after him. The two began exchanging powerful blows that made very loud impacts. However, neither was tiring and they continued to brutally wail on each other.
"Sorry I'm late!" Boyd yelled killing a vampire and tossing it away before helping Leah up. The injured trueblade nodded "No worries." Quickly, Leah leapt over Boyd and struck a vampire.
"I'll cover you Boyd, feather em!"
Boyd grinned and stuck his axe into the ground before pulling out his bow and arrow "Take this you flying rats!"
Each arrow found its mark be it a wing, arm, leg or right into the head of the flying vampires. As the injured ones fell, Leah charged them and finished the job.
Mia flipped away from a vampire as a stream of black flames burned the creature's back.
Soren landed near her and the two began swinging their swords towards each other. As Mia nimbly dodged Soren's attacks the slashes formed into waves of black flames and struck the vampires behind her. Mia mirrored the same moves and Soren avoided them in turn.
The pair came to a quick stop and Soren used Arcwind to launch them both into the air away from the remaining vampires.
"You're dodging is as flawless as ever, Mia." Soren said as he noticed there were no burns on her.
She smiled "I wish I could say the same about you." As she chuckled Soren glanced at the charred sections of his coat.
The pair hit the ground, blades out, killing another pair of vampires.
"Die!" Tyse's fist struck the side of Kanahana's face with the exposed flesh. He quickly followed it up by shooting his knee into Kanahana's stomach. The Midnight Vampire responded by grabbing Tyse and ramming his head into him. As Tyse reeled back Kanahana spun and brought his knee into the side of Tyse's head. Tyse quickly spun around and backhanded Kanahana, as the Midnight Vampire tried to escape Tyse grabbed his arm and swung him around several times before releasing him. The Midnight vampire crashed into the ground and looked up in time to see Tyse shoot towards him, both fists crashing into his chest.
"Well, Tyse…" Kanahana managed to cough out "You are very powerful…but it isn't enough."
Before Tyse could say anything beams fired from Kanahana's eyes into Tyse's face. As his hands came to cover the burning sensation Kanahana leapt up and grabbed Tyse's head before swinging the vampire around and sending him sailing across the room and into a wall.
"I'm no longer a run of the mill vampire underling like I was during Ulyus' time. I am the new lord of the new Order of Rein. I've got big things planned for Hitenticul once we conquer this land."
Tyse floated into the air near Kanahana "You think you'll be able to destroy Hitenticul? You won't even come close."
"The Order was only stopped by the Greil Mercenaries arrival and several men's selflessness…but the Midnight will rid the world of all of you and before my newly formed armies, Hitenticul will fall."
Tyse spat "You are more of a fool than I remember, Kanahana. I'll be forever grateful to my friend Klein Kruse and my leave of the Order…I've regained my humanity…I am no longer a blood and rage fueled creature like you."
Kanahana shook his head "That is exactly why you won't win this fight!"
Wayu moved away from a vampire corpse before turning to see Wyre had stopped moving. He stood in one place watching Kanahana and Tyse fight. "Wyre?"
The thunder sage seemed to be in some sort of trance. "Wyre!" He clenched his fists and seemed to be ready to do something until a vampire came down on him and dug his claws into the thunder sage's chest. "Wyre!"
Wayu charged and stabbed the creature in the face, as she kicked the corpse away she glanced at Wyre who fell to his knees. "Wyre? Are you alright?"
She kneeled at his side "Wyre!" He shook his head and looked at her before realizing he was stabbed in the chest "Damn…sorry, Wayu…I was…"
She turned and brought her shield up to stop another attack "Cadeera!"
The White Valkyrie leapt away from Boyd and Leah as they continued to rip through the vampires. She could just barely make out the deep wounds on Wyre and pulled out her Catharsis staff "Cover!"
Mia and Soren came to her side and began dealing with the vampires as Cadeera cast a powerful light on Wyre, healing him.
"Are you all ready Cadeera?" Soren asked as the Valkyrie turned to him "Yes, just give the signal and we'll wipe em all out."
Soren nodded to Mia and the pair began moving towards Wyre and Wayu while Boyd and Leah covered the White Valkyrie.
Kick to the head. Punch to the stomach. Claw to the arm and knee to the chin; the vampires continued to pummel each other in the air as the New Emissaries and vampires battled each other below.
Powerful beams shot from Kanahana's eyes again, this time Tyse swerved as quickly as he could and turned to see the beams shred through unfortunate vampires that were in the way.
"Can you do that Tyse? No! You know why? Because you're weak!"
A powerful white flash exploded against Kanahana's back, as he screeched Tyse shot towards him and buried his claws into Kanahana's chest before crashing into the ground again.
Tyse smiled to Cadeera before facing Kanahana "Can you do that? No. You know why? Because you are all alone."
Tyse ripped his claws out of Kanahana and flew away as the vampire stood up. "Alone? I have an army!"
Tyse smiled and gestured towards Wyre, Cadeera and Soren all armed with Rexbolt "We have magic."
Moving in unison the mages' capes flared as three orbs of light united above their heads and from them three electrical dragons shot out and rocketed throughout the chamber, incinerating every vampire in their path.
Kanahana watched in silence as his armies numbers dwindled before the three bolts shot towards him. As they collided a loud screech was heard before the chamber fell silent.
"Kino…how do you think your allies will do?"
The swordmaster bowed "No offense my Fell Lord but I do not really consider Ushnae or Kanahana allies…"
The Fell Lord smiled "Indeed…but I was referring to the five that have yet to arrive."
Kino nodded "Them. Yes, they will help us conquer all…though with Murawk, Einseek and Jyim'Son dead what will we do about Gorm and Night Shade?"
"Night Shade…hard to believe we cannot find Drake's disciple."
Kino nodded "I searched all those years ago; the only two people who were close were dead by Pesh and Versha's hands. I'm certain whoever was responsible had no idea what they interfered with but it is incredibly infuriating."
"No worries Kino…soon, it will all be worth it."
Wayu shook her head trying to get the spots to disappear, upon focusing she noticed a very small amount of vampires still around, though they were quickly dispatched by the rest of the group with the exception of Wyre who stood near the crater in the center of the room.
"Mia, go destroy the Orichalcum, we're done here." Soren stated. The trueblade nodded and began heading towards the stone.
Wayu came up to the thunder sage's side "Wyre?"
Once again he seemed to be somewhere else "Wyre…"
He turned to face her and she saw that he seemed…sad.
"Wyre, I don't mean to pry but since we departed you've been very distant…is something wrong?"
The thunder sage looked down at his hand and felt his ring before looking at the crater again "Yes…something is very wrong."
Before she could ask Wyre pushed her back and narrowed his eyes as Kanahana rose out of the crater.
Quickly the vampire cut Mia off, forcing her to jump away. "The stone stays where it is."
Boyd spat "How did you survive that?"
Kanahana smiled "The Midnight has granted me far greater power than you know…I'd be lying if it said it didn't hurt but as you can see, I'm still alive, so it was worth it."
Soren approached Kanahana "Maybe, but now you are alone. You stand no chance against us."
"You're a coward at heart; no way you'll remain here to die." Leah added to which Kanahana nodded.
"I would agree with that…but should worst come to worst I can keep you lot in here long enough the invasion will begin without you. How long do you think the armies can hold out? It won't matter because as long as the Fell Lord lives, we'll win."
Mia shook her head "After all that talk of invading Hitenticul, you'd settle for dying here?"
Kanahana shook his head "You've thrown your best at me and I'm still alive. Nothing you have in reserve can bring me down and my first goal has always been to rip the life out of you…Soren…I'll not miss my chance to do so."
As the New Emissaries prepared to attack, Kanahana screeched and charged. Soren noticed a flash move out of the corner of his eye; a fist crashed into Kanahana and sent the vampire into a wall.
The group stopped to see the fist belong to Wyre Reh.
Soren shook his head "Wyre?"
"I've waited…so long…I've kept everything to myself…for this moment."
As Wyre brought his arm down Soren noticed that Wyre's eyes were completely red.
