Chapter Fifty Four
Border Wood Pass
"Midnight 1. Active."
Kino crossed his arms and smiled as the Midnight walked past him "We certainly aren't making it easy for them to reach us…"
"Of course not…"
The swordmaster turned to see the Midnight's Apothecary entering the room "We need them here but we don't need them capable of fighting against us. They will not be at full strength when they arrive and that will give us the chance to take what we need."
Kino shrugged as the Apothecary joined him, the two were watching the creation of the final Midnight.
"Is it wrong to say I forgot about this one?" Kino asked only to receive silence from the Apothecary next to him.
"Gashuuka. Telray. Meltraitis."
"Seino."
Eyre: Helena!
Helena: We are all set down here!
Eyre: Istequil!
Istequil: The cavalry is prepared to charge.
Eyre: Krey how is Vargas' division?
Krey: The batteries, catapults and cannons are armed and ready!
Eyre: My Queen; give the order.
The Queen stood and looked out over her army. The Border Wood Pass was completely flooded with undead hordes. Extending her arm she called out "Charge!"
Battle cries filled the night as the mighty army of Anondye surged forward to engage the undead armies that stood between them and the Midnight.
As the army around them charged forward Soren turned to the Emissaries "We have to trust the armies of this nation, they will subdue this threat, our goal is to break through as soon as possible."
The group called back affirmations as Mia spoke up "However, we will not ignore them if they get in trouble. Until the armies of Sarhara, Pozem and Regalshin arrive we can't let them get overrun!"
Soren nodded then called out "New Emissaries! Move out!"
The Anondye Army not only had the Numengate Commanders: Helena, Istequil and Vargas heading their ground forces but the two remaining Elder Sages: Opstun and Teyron were with the magic battery.
The Great Knight Wilt stood along with Vassaan at Queen Talia's side, determined to protect her from the invisible Altar threat.
At the head of the army a soldier raised his blade and ran through one of the Midnight's undead men. With that first strike the final war for Ymarkteg began.
"Kay'Shera!" The woman rolled over to see To'Eltz "What?"
The trickster cleared his throat and turned away as the roc knight pushed Zey'Yu off of her "Are we moving?"
"Not yet but I think I see the Sarharan Army, I need you to clarify…"
Kay'Shera was instantly wide awake and ran after To'Eltz to the roof. Calling down Michalis she took to the night sky and looked towards Myillheim. Every once in a while massive flashes of magic lit up the night sky. A force was moving through the Black Fort Town and likely engaging with the enemy.
She came down to To'Eltz side "I'm almost certain that it's them."
The trickster the turned to see the massive Midnight Bastion in the distance "Once they draw closer we'll join with them we could use the support and cover as opposed to approaching the Bastion on our own."
Kay'Shera nodded slowly "That's true…but…from what I can make out there are some pretty sizeable groups of Undead heading back towards the Midnight Bastion."
To'Eltz scratched his chin before signaling to head back down into the library "This is all good…let's get as much rest as we can because once we start moving we don't stop until the Fell Lord is on the ground, dead…"
"Take this you son of a bitch!" The undead masses roared as countless arrows from the Anondye archers pierced them. The Halberd divisions charged forward with shields and spears up, blocking any undead attacks and running the beasts through. The Halberds then fell to the floor allowing the agile swordsmen and women to shoot over them and strike down more of the undead creatures.
Among the Halberd group ripping their spears free were the Numengate guards: Dawson, Krey and Gill.
Gill looked up "Alright bitches! Whose next!?"
Charging forward Dawson missed grabbing him, the man turned to the Halberds who were following his lead "Don't let that idiot get himself killed! Come on!"
Krey echoed the order to his troop and Gill's, continuing their push into the enemy.
Mikel and Boyd appeared from out of a mass of undead, swinging their mighty axes and flooring many undead soldiers. The ones that weren't permanently down were soon silenced by Leena, Leah and Mia's blades.
As the attack force moved forward Janie, Cadeera, Soren, Mist and Rhys used their magic to annihilate or push hordes of enemies away from occupied Anondye forces.
"These things are slow!" Cadeera called out over the roar and whistle of Soren's wind magic.
"Maybe so, but their numbers are staggering. This is just the beginning, give them time and they'll halt our advance-"
"Can't let that happen!" Mist called out, finishing Soren's statement.
Tyse flew above the group, joining Eyre's Falco Knights in clearing the skies of undead mounts. The vampire ducked as a stray wyvern flew over him "I can't believe that even the animals were converted."
The vampire descended on a pair of gryphons as they attempted to rip through the advancing Pegasus knights. Using his mighty claws he dug deep into the birds and brought them to the ground.
Eyre called out a quick "Thanks!" before ordering her Falco Knights to shoot forward, spears filled the air and embedded themselves into wyverns, gryphons, Rocs or any undead unfortunate enough to be in range on the ground.
Wayu and Uhnie worked over time clearing Shinon's perimeter, allowing the marksmen to focus on the targets in the distance. "Shinon…I think we've made a mistake…"
As the marksmen feathered a Roc he raised an eyebrow "What mistake?"
Elsewhere the Elder Sages Opstun and Teyron fought alongside Vargas' forces.
They were in deep thought over Janie's self-realization and her embrace of being Night Shade. Despite the loss of her friend, her teacher and her old identity she continued on stronger than ever, something they truly admired.
"Our roles in her life have ended." Opstun commented as another undead man fell.
"For Ymarkteg to move forward all relics of the past must disappear..." Teyron stated silently.
Opstun turned to his ally and nodded slowly "The peace of the next generation can no longer be held back by those of us with ties to the past."
"As the path descends the walls to our side rise and the trees will-"
"Conceal..."
Turning Shinon roared as loud as he could "Above us!"
Soldiers of the Midnights emerged from the trees and began sliding down the rock walls around Anondye's forces. As the troops realigned themselves arrows came from within the trees and crisscrossed in the skies. Several Falco Knights fell victim to the surprise attacks before many ground troops were gored to death by the black rain.
Mages then emerged from the trees and began calling down magic on the Anondye forces.
Vargas turned and used his hand signals to order his mages to strike up at the cliff sides with earth and fire.
Doing as they were told the cliff sides were bombarded with flames and broke away from below the enemy mages causing them to tumble down.
The Midnight troops that landed on both sides of the armies quickly charged into the mass of Anondye and Undead and began striking down the green knights.
Soren cursed "We've got Midnight! Find them and root them out!"
"Tyse!" Shinon called.
The vampire swooped down and grabbed Shinon and Uhnie then flung them into the trees, as Shinon spotted his landing he fired down on the mages still along the Cliffside. Once Shinon and Uhnie hit the ground they got to work finding and killing the hidden enemy archers.
"Janie!" Soren called before shooting himself off the ground with wind magic. "Right behind you!" The two mages entered the woods on the opposite cliff to take out the rest of the archers as the Emissaries now led by Mia continued cutting a swathe into the Midnight's Undead Horde.
"Regalshin…" Ranulf muttered as a massive army followed by countless Wyvern Lords above began moving through Numengate. Turning the Laguz nodded to Titania "They're going to strike the Midnight from behind…"
The deputy commander looked out into the night "Then that's where we have to be. Tell Ike and get ready, I'm certain he'll want to move out immediately."
Just as Titania predicted Ike had the Emissaries rounded up and prepared to move instantly.
"We're about to head into the heart of the enemy. We'll face numbers unlike anything we've ever encountered before but I know we all have the strength and desire to win..."
Mertre, Rhogam, Tyazaer, Zihark, Orkra, Ranulf and Titania nodded as Ike turned "This continent deserves the freedom it's giving everything for and we will help it reach that goal! Let's move!"
The Emissaries charged out of Temas Tower and began their trek towards the Midnight Bastion; no matter how many hordes they had to break through to reach it they had the intense motivation to accomplish anything.
"Don't even try that on me!" Shinon called, ramming an arrow into a man's eye before kicking the now dead soldier to the ground. Hearing the pull of a bowstring the marksman spun around and shot the perpetrator in the dark earning a roar from another man.
"How can you see us?"
Shinon laughed "After Unotch…no other archer compares…"
Several men cried out in pain as Uhnie continued ripping through them. Shinon then pulled out another arrow and took off deeper into the trees.
Across the way Soren and Janie nodded to each other and unleashed streams of Arcfire into the woods. Several Midnight troops called out in pain or in fear as they retreated.
Janie shot forward and grabbed one of the enemy sages.
"How many of you are there?"
"Asking won't help!"
Janie smiled "Didn't think so!" She put two fingers on his head, as her eyes shifted to purple the sage's eyes rolled back in his head before bleeding. Eyes shifting back to normal the woman released the dead man and turned to Soren "Forty six..."
Soren narrowed his eyes "Since when could you do that?"
Janie shrugged "I'm Night Shade..."
Below a group of Midnight were ripping through Anondye's advance guard in search for the commanders.
One called out "Cut off the head and this invasion will crumble!"
As he turned a woman landed in front him and her lance pierced his chest. Ripping it out she spun about and stabbed another man in the throat "Is that all you fucks!?"
A whirlwind of death Captain Helena continued weaving around enemy attacks and bringing down more of the Midnight. She came to a stop as a group of mages shot fire and wind magic towards her. Shield up the magic only succeeded in pushing her back "C'mon at least try to impress me!"
Lowering her shield she charged forward and impaled one of the mages as the others leapt away. Several swordsmen moved in from behind as the Sentinel ripped her spear from the mage.
Several precise sword strikes brought down all the swordsmen causing Helena to raise an eyebrow. Leah rolled across the ground and killed another mage before he could retreat.
"Are you alright, Captain Helena?"
With a small smile the woman spoke "You again…"
"Coincidences aren't always bad..."
The Sentinel continued to stare at him before turning and striking down another enemy. The woman glanced at him again "Are you just gonna stand there or are you going to keep lending a hand? Not that I need it."
Leah couldn't help but smile before nodding "I know you don't but that won't stop me." Spinning his blade Leah launched past Helena towards another Midnight troop.
Vargas continued to silently grab enemies with his wind magic and shoot them high into the sky where they were either gored by Eyre's troops or fell back to the ground and snapped their necks on impact.
Mist and Rhys joined Opstun and Teyron, dark and light magic made short work of large undead groups allowing the rest of Vargas's mage squadron to continue their pursuit of the Midnight forces.
Covering the four mages were the brutes Mikel and Boyd "I wish I was keeping track of how many I've taken out, no doubt this will end with a massive new record." Mikel commented.
Boyd nodded as he cleaved another man's head off "Honestly in all my time on the field of battle I've never seen numbers like this. It's almost like we're just fighting a writhing mass of creatures."
Mikel moved back as another being fell dead "I hope that doesn't mean you're worried about being overwhelmed."
Boyd shrugged as his axe stuck into an undead man's head "I'm not going to let these things end me…but I try to forget that they were once the population of Numengate."
Mia led the rest of the Emissaries ahead of even the Anondye advance halberds as they continued to cut through towards the Midnight Bastion.
Wayu, Cadeera and Tyse made short work of countless undead soldiers. Relentless spear, magic and savage claws not stopping for anything as Ein'Tosen flared to life and burned away dozens of enemies.
The trueblade occasionally checked the cliff tops making note that the Anondye Army was now entirely within the Border Wood Pass and the walls rose up on either side of them.
Tyse moved over to Mia, kicking a dead man off of his claws "So, do you want me to go check for anything?
As Mist, Rhys, Boyd and Mikel rejoined the Emissaries; Mia nodded "Make sure there are no more ambushes in waiting…we'll hold position here."
Nodding the vampire shot off towards the cliffs where Shinon and Uhnie were still hard at work.
"I'm afraid I'll be leaving your side as soon as we're on site…"
Deshler turned to the Altar man next to him "What? How will I-"
"Org'Eeris and I have one of the most important missions…once Talia is dead I'll be back and all of Ymarkteg will belong to us."
Deshler was traveling with King Hrodath and the Pozem army as they swept through the dead filled Riverside Hold of Drakwaeter.
Taer'Vix tapped the Hierarch's shoulder and grinned "You'll be fine, just stay close to the King and Queen. They'll need to be eliminated to make room for your ascension."
At that statement Deshler's worried look vanished "Pozem King Deshler…"
A wide vile smile appeared on Deshler's lips and Taer'Vix turned away "Just keep thinking about that. Soon you'll be King. Suffer through whatever you must because it is a guarantee."
"Don't let up!" Istequil called out as the cannons lined up next to him and fired fiercely into the undead horde. Bodies flew in pieces throughout the air as the cannons reloaded. During the pause undead soldiers charged the cannons and Istequil ordered the halberd forces to block their approach.
At the head of those troops Dawson, Krey and Gill continued their support, goring the undead before moving out of the way at Istequil's command, allowing another volley of cannon fire to break apart the undead forces.
Talia remained with her caravan; to her immediate right was the Great Knight Wilt who had the caravan surrounded it with guards he determined were the best of the best. The Great Knight still wished he could be out there but knew that there was a threat on Talia's life and he would not let her die.
Vassaan was to the Queen's left, using his all-seeing eye to scan the combat before him. He knew the Altar would use the confusion to draw close and he was focusing as hard as he could to make sure nothing escaped his gaze.
"Queen Talia..." She looked to see Re'Zin approach her; the nomad was all but forced to come on Iltar'Elm's orders. The sniper could not help with one arm but insisted that Re'Zin represent Sarhara until the army of the Desert Nation arrived.
"What is it Re'Zin?"
"Eyre and Helena sent word to tell you the Midnight ambush has been repelled. There may still be a few engaged with our forces but their numbers are irrelevant..."
Talia sighed "Good to hear but I imagine the damage they caused was not something we took into account in planning this attack..."
Re'Zin shook his head "Unfortunately not but we have our best spotters deployed into the forests searching for anymore enemy ambushes as well as some of the Emissaries who entered the wood of their own accord."
"Good to hear. Return to the front Re'Zin and do as you see fit..."
The nomad bowed and took off. Talia noticed the sky above was now a vile black, night had fallen but it seemed what was above them was the dark aura seeping out of the Midnight Bastion. This unnatural night would last until the battle was won…or forever should it be lost.
Landing Tyse peered around a tree to see several Midnight soldiers working around some sort of device. Upon closer inspection he noticed a tome tucked in one of the Midnight's robes.
"Quake…they're going to bury the Anondye army..."
Moving away Tyse rounded a tree and ran into Shinon, the two took a deep breath as Uhnie emerged from a tree "I thought you were someone else Tyse…"
"There is a group of Midnight Earth Sages planning to bury the entire army below. I'm certain there is an identical detachment across the way; I'm going to warn Soren and Janie. Do you think you two can handle this one?"
Shinon laughed "Do you even have to ask?"
The vampire smirked and took off allowing Shinon and Uhnie to move past and prepare their assault on the Earth Sages.
"Midnight 12. Active."
The being stepped down and kneeled before the Fell Lord who smiled "You know who you are…correct?"
Unlike all previous Midnights this one did not speak with a monotone voice, instead an almost human voice echoed "Yes…I know who I am, my Fell Lord."
Now filled in, Soren and Janie followed Tyse and found the exact same mechanism surrounded by Earth Sages, just like on Shinon and Uhnie's side.
Soren pulled out his Arcwind tome "Tyse and I will take out the Midnight. Janie-."
"The device, I'm on it."
The three burst out of the woods and engaged the surprised Midnight soldiers.
Janie raised her arms slowly and strenuously causing the ground below the machine to crack. With a powerful cry she lifted her arms all the way up and the section of land below the machine rose into the air.
She turned to see one Earth Sage shake his head "Don't drop-."
"Oops..." Allowing her hands to fall to her side the chunk of land fell over and rolled down the Cliffside. The device broke apart on the way down and upon hitting the ground floor it was in far too many pieces to count.
The Earth Sage was then killed by Tyse who looked across the way "I think I should go check on Shinon and Uhnie."
As the vampire prepared to take off there was a massive explosion. Janie smirked "I think they got it."
As the battle at the Border Wood Pass raged To'Eltz and the rest of the Western Emissaries came to a stop near the Sarharan army as a woman in a blue robe approached.
"You must be the new Water Archsage." Zey'Yu commented.
"Yes. I am Fee'Tal, from what I understand you are some of the men and women responsible for bringing down the barrier around Numengate."
To'Eltz nodded "Yes. We just require travel with the Sarharan forces to reach the Bastion."
Fee'Tal turned "If half of the stories are true it would be my honor to escort you…"
"Is that all of the Sarharan army?" Heather asked with a little doubt in her voice.
As the group followed Fee'Tal she shook her head "No, the rest are following Ro'Hozak through the Void Treant. To be honest the only reason I'm here is because my queen believed that I'd find something going around the Treant."
To'Eltz turned to Eien who nodded and mouthed "Mistress."
"Well we are grateful for the Queen's intuition." Eien stated to the Water Archsage.
As they continued walking To'Eltz moved towards Volke who read the trickster's mind "I'm keeping my eyes on everything. There is no malice, though I can't be sure that will be the case once we join with the Mistress."
Vassaan's eyes widened as a dozen pillars rose out of the ground in the far distance.
"Eyre! Let the army know to watch out!"
The Falco Knight nodded and had her team echo the warning just as the men on top of the pillars called down meteors.
Soren emerged from the trees alongside Tyse and Janie, the three saw the burning rocks headed for the army.
"We need to stop as many of those as we can!"
Pulling out his rarely seen tome he spun around and released massive ice shards of Rexcalibur, destroying several inbound meteors which were soon replaced with more.
Janie pulled out her tome and breathed in "Here we go…Eien no Kuro! Goetia!" Extending her arm a black fog shot into the sky releasing sharp tentacles that sliced cleanly through the meteors.
Several still managed to get past her and crash into the ground eliciting screams of dying soldiers and moans of the undead.
"Soren, Janie I'm going to fly ahead and take care of the sages!"
The Archsage nodded quickly as Tyse took off, seeing the vampire Eyre spun her lance and followed him.
Shinon and Uhnie also emerged from the other side and noticed the two headed towards the pillars as well as the meteors above.
"One is-"
Uhnie was cut off as Shinon grabbed her and jumped down the cliff, the forest behind them erupting in flames.
"Incoming!" A Midnight Sage yelled as he prepared to shoot at Tyse. The vampire turned as a spear shot past him and impaled the Sage.
Eyre came up next to the vampire and winked; Tyse grinned and nodded his head towards her. The vampire and Falco Knight then proceeded to kill the rest of the Midnight Sages.
Another undead man fell to the floor in front of Mia, the Trueblade wiped her head and prepared to strike until she saw something else and cursed "What else is the Midnight planning to throw at us!"
Whistling she signaled for the Emissaries to fall back as a large human like creature emerged from the ground and began marching towards Anondye's army.
Soren and Janie landed next to Mia who gestured towards the creature "They're not holding anything back."
Janie examined the creature closely "A golem…where did they find one?."
Soren shook his head "Knowing the Midnight they probably created it. I'm not sure how but all that matters right now is that we get it out of our way."
Shinon and Uhnie joined the group with the marksman whistling then glancing at Soren "I'm guessing your brain is forming a plan to topple that thing right?"
Soren nodded "Yes, and I think I've got it. Listen closely!"
The golem let out a monstrous roar as it lifted its arm, the Anondye troops in range panicked and ran while the Undead continued forward, not even turning to see the massive monster. The beast's fist hit the ground causing a quake that threw several men into the air before shards of earth shot out of the ground and impaled them.
The golem continued marching into the mass of Anondye troops not noticing Istequil raise his arm "Fire!"
The cannons released a furious volley that crashed against the golem, however the beast walked through the smoke not even flinching as it raised its arm and struck down again.
Tyse took the skies with Wayu in tow "Are you ready?"
The woman nodded and Tyse swung her around fiercely, with her lance out in front she stuck into the back of the golem's head. The beast came to a stop and reached behind it, Wayu jumped away just in time for a gust of wind from Soren to catch her and pull her out of the creature's reach.
On the ground Janie lifted and manipulated an orb of stone and threw it, pushing the spear deeper into the golem's head.
Letting out a frustrated roar the beast tore the lance out and threw it at the ground. Shinon smiled at that and nodded to Soren, the marksman took off at high speed and upon pulling back on his bowstring Soren blasted his feet.
Shinon shot high up into the air and using Gore Eye's aim shot an arrow into the hole in the back of the golem's head.
Landing Shinon smirked as his bolt exploded, taking off the golem's head. The beast tripped over itself and crashed into the ground, crushing countless undead soldiers before the rocks that composed it fell apart.
"Your planning speed is as impressive as always."
Soren turned to Mia and smiled however the woman's expression quickly changed. Soren turned again to see what she was looking at and cursed. Three more golems emerged from the ground and began moving towards the army.
Upon emerging from the Void Treant, the Sarhara Queen turned to see Fee'Tal's group traveling with the ones who knew her true identity, just as she predicted.
"Well, well! Look my Queen; it seems Fee'Tal has found some of Ymarkteg's heroes!"
Yi'Pyre turned and gave a fake smile to her husband "Yes, their aid will be invaluable."
Ro'Hozak landed near them and extended his hand to To'Eltz who begrudgingly shook it.
"I know of your valor. You didn't just save our King and Queen from the Midnight but fought them off at every turn. It is an honor."
Kay'Shera tilted her head Ro'Hozak. Weren't you one of Hashten'Kor's personal students?"
The man bowed "Yes, I was honored when Gra'Tisk announced I'd replace him but I still don't believe our training was enough. I'm trying to honor him in my actions and maintain the high level of respect the Roc Knights have."
"I'm sure you'll do well." Zey'Yu commented as Fee'Tal cleared her throat.
"We must keep moving, we are nearing the Midnight Bastion."
"How long do you think it will take?" Nephenee asked to which the Water Archsage looked down for a few moments.
"In a little under 10 minutes we'll reach the Citadel Bridge, from there it is a half hour; double time march to the Midnight Bastion."
"Then let's get going." To'Eltz quickly said and signaled the Emissaries to move forward.
Eien took that chance to glance over to the Mistress who was also staring back at her with a smile.
"Look out!" Leah pushed Helena out of the way as a Pegasus slammed into the ground. The golems were making the aerial forces their prime targets and countless were coming down. Eyre was working hard to prevent more losses but pulling back allowed the undead horde to push through the advance Halberd line.
Helena stood and dusted herself off "You sure know how to treat a woman trueblade."
"My name is Leah."
Smiling she spun her lance about "Well Leah, I appreciate the concern but we're continuing our forward push. Those golems aren't going to scare me."
"But-"
Seeing her expression the trueblade sighed "Very well, may I at least suggest we keep close to Vargas' magic brigade?"
The Sentinel smiled "You may say that."
Nodding she ordered her division to move and gestured for Leah to follow.
"I got it!" Janie cried out and motioned for Cadeera, Soren, Rhys and Mist to move towards her.
She took out an Earth tome and began explaining the basics as quickly as possible and the idea she had.
Soren nodded "Much better than trying to duplicate my previous strategy."
"Good thinking Janie!" Rhys commented.
The Elder Sage smiled and passed out Earth tomes to the other magicians "Ready?"
Together they shot their magic into the earth causing five portions of stone to rise into the air. With intense focus the stones were merged into a magical golem.
Mist and Rhys controlled the feet while Soren and Cadeera controlled the arms. Using all her focus Janie kept it together "Alright! Move forward we're taking out the golem on the left!"
Nodding the mages called out and the magical golem began taking steps toward the enemy golem.
As Mia, Leena, Mikel and Boyd tore through more of the enemy they looked up to see a stone fist bust a hole clean through an enemy golem. "What the f-"
Boyd screamed before diving aside as pieces of the golem landed all around him.
Leena smiled "I think we've evened up the playing field.
Even from as far back as the Queen's caravan they could see the golem deliver a second punch, destroying the head of the Midnight golem which then proceeded to fall apart. However the other two golems saw it as well and began moving towards the magical beast.
"Mist! Rhys! Think you can bring the legs up?"
The Saint and Valkyrie glanced at Janie then at each other and nodded.
The magical golem brought up one arm, stopping a punch from an enemy golem. As pieces of stone broke apart the magical golem spun around and brought its leg up. The roundhouse kick slammed through the enemy golem's chest. Upon completing the rotation the magical golem leaned back and delivered a mighty head butt destroying the second enemy golem.
With one left the magical golem brought its arms around itself to block a couple of punches. Linking both arms together the mage's golem lifted its arms and brought a double fisted punch on top of the last enemy golem, shattering it.
The mages were all sweating as they strained to keep the magical golem up "Move it into the undead horde! We'll break it apart there and bury as many of them as we can!" Janie called out.
Sure enough they succeeded in taking four more steps before the beast came apart.
As the smoke cleared a smile came to Soren's face "The gates…"
The Anondye army was drawing close to the gates of the Midnight Bastion.
"My Fell Lord."
"I know."
The Fell Lord stood on a balcony overlooking the battle and smiled
"They have arrived…and soon they will knock on our doors. I can't wait."
