A/N: Here it is, readers, the next chapter! Sorry it's up on the later side – I severely underestimated how long this chapter would be, and ended up writing about half of it today alone lol. I'm always happy to hear any thoughts you have on the story – please read, review, and enjoy!

I do not own Avengers or Gravity Falls.

Tony scrambled to his feet as Wanda reared back her symbiote spear-arm. But before she could attack, Vision blasted the laser from the gem in his head into Wanda. The attack knocked her back a few feet, and the symbiote exploded outward where the laser hit it, like a puddle of water that a rock had been dropped into. She shrieked and turned towards him, then shot another red tendril at him. Vision became intangible not a second too soon, and it passed through him. But as soon as Vision stopped shooting his laser, the hole in the symbiote sealed over again.

Clint, meanwhile, ran back towards the Quinjet and slammed the button on its side that opened the rear ramp. Tony turned to him. "What are you doing?"

"We have to get out of here before that thing kills us all!" Clint shouted.

Tony was stunned. "That thing also happens to be Wanda. We can't abandon her."

"And we won't do her any good if we're dead. The soldiers in that base, they tried to stop her, and she tore her way through every single one of them like it was nothing. I barely made it out alive, and for the record, some help that 'plan' of yours was. All it did was piss her off more. We're at less than half strength. We need to regroup and all of us come up with some plan to stop this thing together."

"Well, now we know that loud noises won't work if she's still in a position to attack us." But with my speakers destroyed, there's no way to try again-.

Wait a minute.

"Rhodey," Tony said into their intercoms. "Your suit has a sonic cannon in it too. If the rest of us can distract Wanda, try firing that at her. If she;d focused on something else, it might-"

"Not gonna work," Rhodey interjected. "The cannon got damaged storming that HYDRA base in the Himalayas. I haven't had time to fix it, with all this alien nonsense going on."

Well, so much for that. But…according to both Stanford and that voice in his head, these things had a second weakness: intense heat. That was why Vision's laser had temporarily harmed it. Only the laser couldn't simultaneously hit the entire symbiote. And who knew if hitting the symbiote with a larger attack, like the kind Rhodey could deliver, would break through it and hurt Wanda too?

He turned back to the others. Vision flew towards Wanda and knocked her backwards, but the symbiote wound another tentacle around his leg. He became intangible to escape the attack. Meanwhile, Rhodey shot his hand lasers at Wanda. She turned to face him, and suddenly a salvo of barbs made of the symbiote's slime shot from her arm towards him. They hit his armor with a series of wet thuds, but didn't appear to penetrate it. Vision tried to retreat, but Wanda extended her other arm towards him. Several interwoven tendrils that looked to be half-symbiote, half-magic flew towards Vision and wound around him, even in his intangible form.

If this thing could harness Wanda's powers, this was even worse than Tony had thought.

"Got you," the symbiote said.

Tony flew towards Wanda while she was distracted with Vision. At the last second, he flipped around in the air and kicked her in the back. She fell forward, and the surface of the symbiote where his thrusters had hit her warped slightly. Her grip on Vision faltered enough for him to fly farther away.

Wanda was back on her feet in an instant, and she shot a large tendril at Tony's ARC reactor. He X-ed his arms in its path just in time to block it. The tendril wound around his hands. Please don't let it find a way inside….

"Can't…bond…with…metal," the symbiote snarled. "Die…Deceiver!"

"Must be confusing me with someone else," Tony said. "Whoever this Deceiver of yours is, he sure as hell isn't me. I don't even know who you are."

Wanda narrowed her large, blank eyes. "We…are…CARNAGE!" She thrust on him with her tendril, sending him flying backwards.

He activated his thrusters in midair and hovered several feet off the ground. "Carnage?" he called. "Bit on the nose, don't you think?" He was surprised that this one had a name for itself. Do they all have names, and we just don't know because they haven't bonded with someone like this before?

"You mock me?" Carnage growled.

Rhodey fired a barrage of smaller lasers into the symbiote's side. "Don't take it personally," he said. "He does it to every bad guy we fight."

Carnage roared and burrowed a large tendril into the ground. A few seconds later, a series of swirling tentacles emerged beneath Rhodey. He took flight to dodge them, but the tips of several vines still wound around his leg. Tony fired a rocket from his wrist at the vines, at the same time that Vision shot the laser from his gem at it. The combined explosion sliced through it. Rhodey flew higher into the air and shook the ends of the tendrils off his armor.

Vision spun around in midair, his yellow cape billowing behind him. "Wanda!" he called. "Wanda, I know you are still in there. You have to fight this creature…don't let it control you."

Carnage's eyes narrowed. "Wanda. Is. GONE!" She shot a string of barbs through the air towards Vision, but he became intangible and they passed through him harmlessly.

Tony flew towards Carnage while she was distracted with Vision and rammed into her with his side. He grabbed hold of her arm, and they both spun around each other through the air. "Come on, you heard Vision," Tony said. "You've got to fight this." He didn't care what the symbiote said; he didn't believe for a second that Wanda was truly gone.

"That's not true," he said. "I don't care what you are, but my friend doesn't have any vacancy right now, so you need to get-"

Carnage turned one of her arms into a blade, and stabbed it into Tony's ARC reactor. He gasped. The suit of armor shut down, all the lights inside his helmet went out…all that was left were two narrow slits of light out the eyeholes. With no more propulsion, the suit crashed to the ground with Carnage on top of it. Something crashed against the suit's stomach; he couldn't see exactly what it was, but no doubt it was some extension of Carnage.

Was this how he was going to die? Torn apart by an alien creature possessing his friend while stuck in a powerless suit of armor? But this wasn't in either of the visions I saw in my dream. Whether I accepted his help or not, this wasn't-.

Suddenly, a series of lasers blaster into Carnage from somewhere behind him. Carnage shrieked and ceased attacking Tony. He turned his head, but that didn't do any good; his field of vision was still severely impeded. "Stop!" he shouted, his voice echoing back to him over and over inside the helmet. "Whoever's doing that, stop – we don't want to hurt her!"

Then his helmet's faceplate was gone, and Rhodey was crouched over him. "Hey, man," he said. "You okay?"

"Who did that?" Tony asked. "Was that you, or Clint in the jet-?"

"Whoever it is, they're not with us." Rhodey gripped Tony under the arms and lifted him to his feet. Above them, lasers continued to fly through the air towards Carnage, who was currently sheltered behind a giant shield extended from her arm. Tony turned to look behind him. Hovering about fifty feet off the ground was a black jet…not a Quinjet, this one looked very different. It had a narrower body with two wings on each side; a small one in the front, and a larger one with two engines in it in the back. The lasers bombarding Carnage shot from two fixtures on the front of the jet.

Clint ran over towards them. "It's a jump jet."

"A what?" Tony asked.

"A jump jet. SHIELD uses to use them as an alternative to Quinjets."

"But SHIELD's gone, so who the hell is flying this thing?"

The lasers drove Carnage back towards the edge of the crater. "Whoever they are, they clearly want this thing gone too," Rhodey said.

"Drive her back into the crater," Clint said. "It won't hurt Wanda. The soldiers in the base already knocked that thing off a ledge twice down in the crater and it did nothing, but it'll buy us a minute to get out of here."

"Vision, laser!" Rhodey kept one arm around Tony to help support him, and turned and blasted his other arm's laser towards Carnage. Vision flew down and added his gem's laser to the attack. The combined assault drove Carnage back the last few feet to the precipice, and she fell over the edge.

"So…sound?" Clint asked. "Is that the aliens' weakness?"

"Sound and extreme heat," Tony said. "Rhodey could probably provide enough heat if he went all-out with his attacks, but who knows what that could do to Wanda."

Behind them, the jump jet turned around in the air and landed. Its rear ramp opened, and over half a dozen soldiers in black gear emerged from the jet.

"HYDRA!" Clint shouted. "Everyone, get back to the Quinjet!"

"Take down those Avengers!" a female voice ordered from inside the jump jet. "I want them alive – alive, you hear me?"

Rhodey and Tony hurried back towards the jet behind Clint. The HYDRA soldiers fired at them. At the last second, Vision dropped from the sky and blocked the attack, the bullets ricocheting off his vibranium body. "Go!" he said. "I will hold them off."

The soldiers concentrated their fire on Vision. He blasted his laser at them, flinging the fr4ont row of them backwards and spraying dust into the air around the jump jet.

"The hell is HYDRA doing here?" Rhodey asked. "How did they even know about this?"

The soldiers who were still standing retreated up the ramp, where the body of the jet offered them partial cover from Vision's laser. Tony, Rhodey, and Clint, meanwhile, made it partway up the Quinjet's ramp. Tony let go of Rhodey and gripped a handle in the side of the jet to balance himself. Rhodey reached for him again, but Tony waved him away. "I'm good."

Then someone else strode partway down the jump jet's ramp between the soldiers. They weren't wearing the same standard black helmets and gear that the majority of the HYDRA agents Tony had come across wore. This person wore mostly black too, but with a vertical grey stripe down their chest, a hood covering most of their head, and a black mask with large, dark eyeholes.

"Who's that?" Clint asked.

Suddenly, before any of them could react, the figure reached onto their back, grabbed a ring-shaped metal disc, and hurled it towards Vision. The synthezoid shot his laser at the disc, but its edge refracted the beam off it to the sides. The disc hit Vision in the chest with a barely audible crunch, and stayed lodged in there. Vision gasped, his laser faltered, and he dropped to his knees.

"What the hell?" Rhodey exclaimed. "Is that even possible?"

"It…shouldn't be." Tony had always thought there was nothing that could possibly pierce vibranium. Aside from maybe more vibranium, but if that was the case, how the hell had HYDRA managed to get their hands on a batch of the rarest metal on earth? That guy Ultron and the twins met with in Johannesburg, maybe? Ulysses Klaue, was that his name?

"Rhodey, cover me," Clint said. He spun his bow, collapsing it into its bo staff form. He dashed from the Quinjet's ramp towards Vision. The HYDRA soldiers fired at him, but Rhodey shot several small missiles in their direction to distract them. Clint rapidly spun the bo staff, deflecting several of the bullets.

"Someone's been practicing," Tony remarked. He didn't know if Clint had been experimenting much with the new features of the bow Tony had made for him, but this just about answered that question.

Vision tried to get up, but stumbled and fell down again. Meanwhile, the HYDRA soldier who had stabbed him broke from the others and dashed across the battle zone towards him. Whether HYDRA had expected to find Vision here or not, no doubt they wouldn't pass up the opportunity to kidnap him. Who knew what they would be capable of with someone with his abilities at their disposal?

"Rhodey-," Tony started.

"I see 'em." He raised his arm and fired several laser blasts from his hands at the figure. They leapt over one, then somersaulted around the others. Tony studied the person. They were far more athletic than a run-of-the-mill HYDRA grunt…and had a smaller stature than most of them, for that matter.

Meanwhile, some of the HYDRA soldiers returned fire towards Rhodey. Their bullets bounced off his armor, but he still sighed with what sounded like frustration. "I can't get a clear shot with them shooting at me," he said. "And that soldier's getting too close to Clint and Vision for me to be confident I wouldn't hit them by accident." He turned and shot another missile towards the jump jet, but the soldiers took cover and were spared. "Clint, watch out – someone's coming up behind you!"

Clint finally reached Vision after running for what felt like forever, but he knew had been less than half a minute. He crouched next to Vision. "Hey, buddy, you with me? What happened to you? How did this…?"

Vision loosely gripped the blade lodged in his chest. "I scanned its molecular structure. It appears to be made of vibranium. Like me. Whatever it did, I…I can't phase through it."

Clint gripped the curved handle that ran through the center of the weapon. It was called a chakram. He'd only seen them on a few occasions before, on various missions around the world for SHIELD, and had never known them to be a choice weapon of HYDRA soldiers. Then again, vibranium wasn't exactly their choice metal to construct their weapons from, either. He pulled on the chakram, and it tore free from Vision's chest. The edges of the jagged cut sparked yellow.

Vision raised a hand and gasped, "Behind…you."

At almost the same moment, Rhodey's voice came across his intercom. "Clint, watch out – someone's coming up behind you!"

Clint whirled around just in time to take a knee to the face. He sprawled backwards next to Vision, the bo staff and chakram flying from his grasp. His vision swam for a second.

"Get up," he heard someone say harshly.

He looked up. The HYDRA soldier grabbed Vision by the arm and pulled him up. He swung his other arm at them, but unfortunately the attack was too slow. They easily twirled around it and twisted Vision's arm behind him. He grunted in pain. Clint felt around on the ground, grabbed his staff, and swept the attacker's legs out from under them. They lost their grip on Vision and tumbled to the ground. Clint got up and put an arm around Vision. "Come on, we have to get out of here."

On the Quinjet's ramp, Rhodey continued unleashing his arsenal in the direction of the HYDRA jet, which prevented the soldiers from having a clear shot at Clint and Vision. Hopefully he had enough ammo to last until they got back to the Quinjet. He'd never seen the War Machine armor run out of firepower, but it couldn't exactly have an infinite supply in it either.

Then an ear-splitting shriek came from the bottom of the crater, followed by a brilliant flash of red light. She's coming again. They were running out of time.

Clint heard a whistling from behind him, and turned around and ducked just in time to avoid the HYDRA soldier slashing him across the back with the chakram. Damn; if nothing else, they were persistent. He sidestepped another attack and turned to Vision. "Do you think you can get yourself back to the jet?"

"I…believe so," Vision replied.

"Then go. I'll hold this octopus off."

Vision nodded and staggered back towards the jet. The HYDRA soldier grunted and swung the chakram at Clint again. He ducked under it, then swung his staff towards them. They deflected it off their arm and spun away from the attack, making Clint lose his balance slightly. They kicked him in the back of the leg, knocking him down to one knee. They brought the chakram down towards his head. He raised his staff in its path to block the attack. The chakram bisected the staff, but slowed the attack enough that the bladed disc missed Clint himself. Of course the staff wouldn't deflect it; it was made of vibranium. Great; there goes my bow.

Then, behind the HYDRA soldier, a swirling mass of streaks of red symbiote slime rose from the crater, with Carnage at the center. "My turn," the symbiote snarled. The swirls of slime arranged themselves into over a dozen massive spears that hurtled towards them. Clint and the soldier both leapt to the side to dodge ones aimed towards them. A third ricocheted off Vision, a fourth sheared through two of the jump jet's engines, and Rhodey destroyed two more with his lasers and missiles before they could take out the Quinjet's engines.

Carnage landed on the ground at the rim of the crater. Several jagged strands of the symbiote slime trailed behind her like a cape, and floated lazily in the air even once she landed.

"Clint, get back here now!" Rhodey called through the intercoms. "Vision's at the jet – he's starting it up!"

"Got it," Clint said.

The HYDRA soldier leapt at Clint again. He deflected their chakram-holding arm to the side with one half of his staff, then shoved up against their stomach with the other half, flipping them backwards over him. They fell to the ground on their back with an audible grunt.

Clint suddenly heard a low rumbling, like of a jet engine. It wasn't the Quinjet; that hadn't lifted off yet, and the noise it was making was more of a reverberating hum. The sound seemed to be coming from above him. He turned and looked at the sky.

There. Approaching from the north was another aircraft…. It's not a Quinjet, the shape's not right, and it's not a jump jet either. Whatever it was, for all he knew, if could be HYDRA reinforcements en route. All the more reason for them to get out of there.

Carnage plunged a mass of tendrils into the ground in his direction. Clint turned and ran towards the Quinjet. He looked behind him; he could tell where the tendrils were by the eruptions of dirt following him, and they were gaining on him. Come on, come on, not much farther now. He was thirty feet from the jet, then twenty, ten, five….

Clint lunged towards the rear ramp, and Rhodey ceased his attack on the HYDRA jet to reach out a hand to grab him.

But he started his pushed off the ground a fraction of a second too late, and the tips of Carnage's tendrils wound around his foot. He fell to the ground, his hands grasping at the edge of the Quinjet's ramp. Rhodey reached down and grasped his arms and pulled him forward. But then Carnage pulled even harder on him, and he slid backwards. "You're not going anywhere," the symbiote said. "The Deceiver and his cohorts shall die."

Rhodey fired a missile from his shoulder into Carnage's tendril closer to her arm. The attack briefly tore a hole in the tendril, and Rhodey pulled Clint farther into the Quinjet. But the symbiote quickly reconstituted itself and pulled back on him again.

I certainly didn't have a game of human tug-of-war in mind for the day when I woke up this morning. Then again, I didn't have any of this in mind when I woke up.

The HYDRA soldiers back at the jet attacked Carnage, but their bullets did nothing to her. She nonchalantly fired several more barbs at the soldiers without even looking at them, almost as an afterthought. Most of the barbs hit their targets in the face or throat, instantly killing them.

Rhodey fired a series of more missiles at Carnage's tentacle. The continual barrage finally severed it, and the tendrils wound around Clint slackened. Rhodey pulled him up the Quinjet's ramp and slammed the button to shut the ramp. It started to shut behind them.

"You okay?" Rhodey asked.

Clint grabbed his hand and got up. "Yeah, I'm good. But if we want to get that thing out of Wanda, we're gonna need something a lot bigger than the sonic cannons inn your armor to do it." He gestured to Tony and Rhodey.

"I have a few bigger ones in my workshop at the Compound," Tony said. 'But first we need to get back-"

A horrible screech of rending metal came from behind them. Clint whirled around. Several giant, red, finger-like tendrils gripped the edges of the rear ramp, digging into it. With a final skkrrrritttch, the ramp was ripped clean off and flung to the side.

"Vision, get us out of here!" Tony exclaimed.

The rumble of the jet's thrusters kicking into high gear permeated the jet. The aircraft lifted off the ground a few feet…and then stalled, as more tentacles dug into its sides.

"The wings are taking damage," Vision said. "Without them, even with the thrusters, we cannot escape."

"Going somewhere?" Carnage snarled.

A large shadow passed overhead. Clint edged towards the back of the Quinjet. Hovering in the sky above them was the aircraft he'd seen approaching from the north…which, now that he was closer to it, had to be the largest plane he had ever seen. It was all black and far larger than a Quinjet, with eight massive thrusters on its underside holding it aloft.

"What the hell is that?" Rhodey asked, voicing Clint's exact thoughts.

Carnage flinched slightly the closer the plane got, but the tendrils latched onto the Quinjet remained intact. Up above, the huge plane's rear ramp lowered, and someone leapt out.

"What're they doing?" Rhodey said. "There's no way they can survive-"

"They've got to be enhanced." Clint had never seen it first-hand, but he'd heard about Steve pulling similar stunts jumping out the backs of Quinjets on a few occasions, from much higher up than this aircraft was.

About halfway into their fall, the person shot some sort of shockwaves down from their hands. They landed in what people had taken to calling the "superhero landing," probably because of how often the Avengers – particularly, it seemed, Nat and Tony – happened to land in that position. A small shockwave blasted out from her – Clint could see now that she was female – as she landed. She shook back her shoulder-length brown hair and stood up. Clint noticed that she wore what looked like a pair of silver gauntlets on her wrists. Did those generate the shockwaves?

Carnage sniffed and pointed a long, hooked finger at the woman. "You're Terrigen-powered, aren't you? I can smell the stench of you failed experiments a light-year away."

Terrigen? What the hell does that mean?

The woman extended an arm towards Carnage, and another shockwave shot from her towards the symbiote. As soon as the wave hit the symbiote, she screeched in pain. The hooks she was using to hold the Quinjet in place slackened slightly. The jet's engines whined louder, and its nose tilted skyward, but the rear end hardly moved. Carnage lashed an axe blade-shaped tentacle towards the woman, but she unleashed a shockwave from her other hand to hold it at bay.

"Should we help her?" Rhodey asked.

"Even if she's HYDRA, I think they're clearly the lesser of the two evils at this point," Clint said. He suddenly realized the soldier who had attacked him and Vision was gone. Didn't notice, with everything else going on.

Rhodey fired a missile at the symbiote axe, blowing it apart, and several more at the ground around Carnage. The symbiote continued screaming, and it looked as though it was slowly being blown off Wanda. Flailing tendrils sprouted from its back as small holes appeared in the slime covering Wanda's front.

"How has someone this powerful gotten by under our radar?" Tony murmured.

"NO-O-O!" Carnage screeched. More and more of the symbiote blew off Wanda, and the claws holding onto the Quinjet dissolved. The jet finally broke free of them, but Vision didn't fly it away. "The wings have been too badly damaged for us to fly this jet back to the Compound," he said. "Alternatively, we could fly it over to the jet that Clint and Wanda flew here in, and then fly that one the rest of the way back."

"Set it down," Tony said. "There's…someone showed up, and they're getting the symbiote out of Wanda."

The last of the symbiote flowed off her, and it coalesced into a writhing mass on the ground behind her. The Quinjet settled back to the ground. Clint and Rhodey ran out the back of it. Off to the side, Clint saw the jump jet taking off again, albeit clumsily since Carnage had destroyed half of its thrusters, but they had bigger issues at the moment. Near the edge of the crater, the woman held the red symbiote down with another round of shockwaves, while also easing the seemingly unconscious Wanda onto the ground. Thankfully, Clint could see her chest rising and falling. She's still alive. "I got it taken care of," the woman said, presumably into an intercom device. "It looks like an 0-8-4. Some sort of ball of red slime. And get this…it was inside someone, possessing them, and you're not gonna believe who. Wanda Maximoff. The new Avenger. I know, right?"

Rhodey stopped and raised an arm towards her. "Don't move. Who are you?"

She turned to him and Clint. "Oh, hey. War Machine and Hawkeye." She turned her head slightly. "Yeah, they're here. Coulson obviously didn't know the Avengers were already taking care of this one."

Coulson? …It has to be someone else, he's dead, he's been dead for years.

"Who? Are you?" Rhodey repeated.

"Sorry." She raised the arm she wasn't using to hold down the symbiote. "Daisy Johnson, agent of SHIELD."

"That's a lie," Clint said immediately. "SHIELD doesn't exist anymore." Even HYDRA operatives had to realize that claiming to be SHIELD wasn't going to get them anywhere anymore.

"Yeah, we do. We just like to keep a lower profile than we used to." Daisy sucked in a breath. "Mack, could you send down that containment module? Like, now? I can't hold this thing here all day." She glanced down at Carnage, then back at Clint and Rhodey. "Seriously, we're SHIELD. I became an agent right before the HYDRA uprising. The loyal agents who survived have been working behind the scenes to rebuild the organization since then."

Clint knew some loyal agents had survived; after all, Fury had had a full crew manning the helicarrier he brought to the Battle of Sokovia. He'd always just imagined that Fury had scrapped them together on a moment's notice, not that they were all actually working to rebuild their organization.

"Even if you are with SHIELD, you said the name 'Coulson,'" Rhodey said suspiciously. "Phil Coulson's been dead for over three years."

Daisy gave a short, surprised laugh. "He hasn't been in contact with you? The uprising, Theta Protocol, the Inhumans…wow. I thought for sure he would've at least called you once or twice."

A white, rectangular object detached from the bottom of the plane overhead. Four thrusters in its corners activated, slowing its descent, and it landed with a dull thud and a cloud of dust.

"What's that?" Clint asked.

"Containment module," Daisy said. "Hang on." She fired a second shockwave towards Carnage from her other hand, and then slowly lifted her hands. She held the symbiote suspended in the air between them, held in place by her powers. The symbiote writhed about, but couldn't escape, or get its tendrils close enough to her hands to bond with her. She walked towards the containment module and pressed a button on the side with her elbow. Two doors in the side of the module slid open. Daisy blasted the symbiote into the module, then shut the doors again before the symbiote could get out. That didn't stop it from trying, though; through the windows in the doors, Clint could see Carnage launch towards them and plaster itself to the inside of the doors. "The 0-8-4's in the module," Daisy said. "Bring it back up."

"No, no, we came here to bring that thing back to the Compound with us," Clint said. "We need to keep it contained there."

"Think this is the first mysterious alien object we've dealt with?" Daisy asked. "We do this all the time. It'll be safe with us. Although…if you want, you could come back to our base with us. Help us study it. We've got room for a few more passengers on Z1. Not to mention…that thing really did a number on your Quinjet." She nodded towards the giant gouges Carnage had torn in the jet's wings and rear.

Meanwhile, the thrusters in the module activated and launched it back into the air towards the plane. Clint sighed. First claiming to be SHIELD, and then claiming Coulson was alive…this was too far-fetched to be made up. Like he'd thought before, even HYDRA wouldn't bother making up lies like this. And if Coulson really was alive, he sure as hell wanted to know how that particular miracle had been pulled off. He turned to Rhodey. "What do you think?"

Rhodey shrugged and looked up at the plane. "That thing would be neat to fly on. And if things go south, well, we're still the Avengers. Shouldn't be anything we can't handle." He turned and called back to the Quinjet. "Hey Tony, how you feel about taking a ride on that big-ass plane up there?"

Clint just hoped they wouldn't regret this.
