Amy glanced at Sheldon who was sitting on one of the stools in her lab. e has been sitting there for ten minutes but he still hasn't said a word. She clinked a beaker and a petri dish together to grab his attention. "Are you going to tell me why you're here or are you just going to sit there like a statue?"
Sheldon looked up at her. "Amy, you're a neurobiologist..."
"Oh? That's news," she replied sarcastically which, of course, Sheldon did not get. She sighed. "What is it, Sheldon?"
"I know I wasn't a good boyfriend to you and I don't want to be a bad boyfriend to Penny." He replied simply.
Amy narrowed her eyes. "Huh. Well you weren't a completely bad boyfriend. You had your moments."
"Well they're not enough. Especially not for Penny." Sheldon replied.
She smiled, realizing that he probably really loved Penny even more than he loved her. "Why not?"
"Penny's been through a lot in her life. She's a good person and she deserves more than... me." He replied.
Amy cocked her head. "Sheldon, she chose you. She left Leonard because she knew she could do better, and the better that she did was you!"
Sheldon shook her head. Stubborn man, Amy thought. "I want to change."
Amy's eyebrows shot up. "Change? You hate change." Sheldon simply nodded.
"Look," she sat on a stool opposite him. "You just can't change for someone. That's who you are-not affectionate, not good with the romance stuff-but Penny loves you, and she'll understand."
Sheldon pursed his lips. "It's not just that," he replied. "I want to be normal. I want to be able to hold her hand and not have this little voice inside of my head telling me to douse my hand with Purell. I want to be able to tell her how I feel. I want to be able to have a normal relationship with her-not one that is built on a relationship agreement. I want to be able to act like a normal boyfriend, to take her out, give her presents..."
Amy thought about it for a moment. "So you want me to condition your brain like I did years ago?" Sheldon nodded. "Uhh... no."
"Why not?" Sheldon whined.
She shrugged. "Because she loves you, and she won't call you out on your shortcomings. Because relationships are illogical and irrational; whatever you do for each other should come mostly from the heart, not the brain. After all, it's the heart that tells you that you love someone, not the brain."
"I did not understand a word you said." Sheldon replied,
Amy sighed. "Just... Look, love is unlike your science. It's way more complicated than that. You don't design experiments to figure it out, you just kind of wing it. You love Penny, don't you?"
"If this is what love feels like then yes, I do." He replied.
She smiled. "That's all that matters."
Dinner. Our house. 7. Bring your boyfriend. Huge announcement!
Penny smiled as she read Bernadette's text message. Can't wait! Will bring my boyfriend. :-)
"Sweetie?" She called from the apartment's living room. Sheldon appeared from the bathroom and looked at her with concern. "Yes?" He asked.
"Bernadette said dinner's going to be at her house tonight. I have to go to work so can I just pick you up at 6:30?" Penny asked.
Sheldon sat on the couch beside her. "Do you really have to work today? It's Saturday."
Penny rested her head on his shoulder. "We work even on holidays, you know." She felt Sheldon's head resting lightly on hers as well. "Aren't you going back to CalTech or something? It seems... boring just staying home."
"I want to." He said, unaware that he was drawing invisible circles on Penny's hand. "Siebert told me that I can take my job back any time I want."
She chuckled. "Well, you did win a Nobel, so work shouldn't be hard to find."
"Right." Sheldon laughed with her-a genuine laugh, not the two short bursts of air he used to do.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, Sheldon still lightly touching Penny and Penny's head still resting firmly on Sheldon's shoulder. Slowly she realized just how lucky she was that someone loved her as unconditionally as Sheldon does. Sitting on the old couch in apartment 4A with her beloved boyfriend-that was something she'd choose over doing and being someplace else.
"Oh, crap!" She suddenly jumped, startling Sheldon. "I am so going to be late. Bye, Moonpie," she said before pecking him on the lips.
"Only Meemaw calls me Moonpie!" He smiled, secretly liking that Penny calls him that.
"I'm having a baby!" Bernadette exclaimed as soon as everybody sat on the couch. They all stood up immediately showered her with hugs and congratulatory messages.
Howard stood beside his wife, looking absolutely proud. "No congratulations for me?" He glanced at his crotch jokingly, and everyone laughed.
Raj wiped his eyes. "Aww, just how perfect are these guys?" He asked rhetorically. Penny put her arms around his shoulders. "You'll find someone someday, sweetie. And you two will be perfect, too."
Penny made her way to Bernadette. "Couldn't wait until at least the middle of dinner, huh?" She joked.
"Obviously!" Bernadette replied. Howard started setting up the table.
Amy made her way to the two women. "Congratulations! How far along are you?"
"Just three months," Bernadette replied. "I'm actually kind of nervous. I'm a small woman! My belly's going to be way bigger than I am."
Howard called everyone over to the dining table. "We're so going to talk about this later," Bernadette muttered to the girls as she went to Howard. Sheldon grabbed Penny's hand and led her to the table, following everyone else. "They're gonna have a baby!" Penny whispered.
Sheldon laughed quietly. "I know; I heard."
They approached the table, but before sitting down, Sheldon uttered four words that Penny thought she would never in a million years hear from him. "I want a baby."
AN: ...aaaaand I'm stopping there. Sheldon wants a baby!
By the way, I know I promised fluff between Sheldon and Penny, but I realized that Sheldon's gonna need time to adjust to the relationship. But he'll get there!
