"Well, let's get to work," I told him. Days passed, and who knows maybe even weeks, went by never seeing Head Honcho. I'm surprised he's stupid enough to not notice that we're not even making the missile. Things were getting better for me, but not great. I still had moments I could barely breathe and almost pass out and Yinsen would stop me working for the day. I still had nightmares at night too. I would feel bad because I would wake up Yinsen and he would come over and come over and try to calm me down, but it was no use. It was either about me dying on that crude table or Head Honcho killing me.
But there was one nightmare that stood out above the rest though. Pepper came with me to the presentation this time, and then the Humvee exploded in front of us…you know the rest. I woke up (in my nightmare) again to find myself in front of the camera. I looked around for Pepper and finding her next to me perfectly fine somehow. But she was silently crying. I tried to give her the look saying, "I'm okay Pepper, everything's going to be fine," even though I knew it wouldn't be alright for long, knowing what was going to happen next. What are they going to do to her? They can't hurt my Pepper. I was dragged out of my thoughts and automatically on the table again. Please no, not again I thought to myself, somewhat still conscious while I was dreaming. I look to my side to see Pepper. Knowing what was going to happen next, I told Pepper to leave.
"Don't stay here! Leave!" I yelled at her through the increasing agony in my chest. But she sat there, as if I didn't say anything, she just sat there crying. She grabbed my hand saying it was going to be alright. Before I could get another word out, that same, unadaultered pain went through me again. I tried to hold the scream in for Pepper, but I couldn't. It was impossible. The scream went through me. I tried to move away like I did before, but Pepper yelled through her crying for me to please, just stop. The more I screamed, the more she sobbed.
"Pepper, please stop crying. It's going to be okay in a while. Please," I kept trying to say.
I jolted up, screaming and in a sweat. Yinsen was already by my side, trying to calm me down. Even though I didn't want to all I could do was start sobbing. Stark's don't cry, just stop. I kept trying to tell myself but it wouldn't work. Eventually I stopped, so Yinsen went back to bed. Of course, I didn't sleep the rest of the night. That was about it.
So, back to the story. One day, Head Honcho came in after who knows how long. He started talking, but I didn't listen. He started walking towards me, and if looks could kill, I would've been dead. He pulled my shirt down, revealing the arc reactor. I couldn't understand what he said because he had such a thick accent. He walked over to Yinsen and started talking in a different language and said something about the Jericho. The same thing was said, increasingly getting louder. Suddenly, the guards grabbed him and forced his head onto the anvil. Head Honcho grabbed a pair of tongs and grabbed a coal from the fire that was burning and threatened to put it in his mouth. I couldn't just stand there anymore, he was my friend. I took a step forward and said
"What do you want?" All the guards that came in with him all yelled and pointed their guns at me. I took a step backwards with my hands up.
"Don't hurt him, he's a good assistant," I barely said. There was a long, tension filled silence waiting to see what he was going to do. He dropped the coal onto the anvil right in front of Yinsen's face. I could see him slacken in the guards grip after he dropped it. Head Honcho turned around and faced me and with a stern look said,
"You have until tomorrow to assemble my missile," and with that he walked out the door with all his guards. I waited until the doors closed completely to run over to Yinsen.
"You okay?" I said running over to him.
"Yeah, I'm fine Stark," he told me with relief flooding his voice. We sat there in silence for a minute, figuring out what just happened.
"What are we going to do?" he asked.
"I guess work as fast as we can before they come back," and with that I stood up and walked away to my table to start working.
We worked constantly, not stopping, knowing we had little time. We made a small bomb around the door handles so when the guards came to get us or the missile, it would explode and we would have time to hurry up and finish what left we could do. I started getting into the suit with Yinsen's help since we knew we didn't have time. We could hear them coming down the hall so I had to walk him through booting it up and how to speed up the process.
"Remember the plan okay?" I told him but he was too focused on booting the suit up. 75% of it was done when the bomb at the door went off.
"I'm going to hold them off," Yinsen told me as he ran off.
"Stick to the plan," I yelled back at him. No reply. He better stick to the plan. As soon as the boot-up ended, all the lights went out. I heard gunshots next to me. It's go time I thought to myself. I turned to face the guards basically throwing them all out of my path. Halfway through the cave, I got my arm stuck in the wall. I felt something go off my helmet to see a guy lying on the ground, shot with his own bullet. I quickly got my arm free and made it to the front of the cave.
"Yinsen?" I cried out. I heard a strangled cry say,
"Watch out!" I looked over and saw Head Honcho about to shoot me with a huge gun. I moved away and sent a flame thrower over in his direction to blow him up. Once it hit him, I looked over to see Yinsen onto of a bunch of bags, bleeding everywhere on his chest.
"Come on let's go," I told him.
"I can't Stark," he said.
"Yes you can, you have family,"
"My family is dead Stark, I'm going to see them now," I didn't know what to say. His family all along was dead. All I could think of to say was
"Thanks for saving my life,"
"Don't waste it Stark. Don't waste your life," he said. He took one last strangled breath and he was gone. Gone. It can't be. I couldn't get myself to leave; I just wanted to stay there to mourn him. He saved my life and I couldn't return the favor. But then I remembered what he said, don't waste your life, and then I found the strength to fight. For Yinsen.
