Here it is. My last chapter :) I already realized how horrible the ending is, so don't worry the next story will be great (or at least I hope so)
I do not own Professor Layton
Chapter 15
Back to England
When Luke had woken up and saw that his father had left a sudden terror kicked into him, but as soon as it had come, it was gone. He started his morning as normal and typical as he could, even though it seemed pretty awkward, since nothing would ever be the same.
As Luke stood by the window trying to get a little fresh air in the room the door suddenly opened.
"Well, good morning my boy! How did you-"
The professor was cut of by a cheerful embrace coming from his son. Luke relaxed immediately when strong arms slowly wrapped around his back, it was a feeling like everything was finally falling back into place. Of course it would be a long way to go.
"Well, I've missed you too son", Layton said with a smile when he carefully let go of his son but kept close contact while putting his hands on Luke's shoulders.
Luke though still did not answer in any kind of way. Not because he was afraid or shocked. He just wanted to enjoy this moment the feeling of peace for as long as possible.
"Luke", the professor started with a gentle and calm voice,"I know it's been a rough time for you but I really hope we'll get through this together. So since we do not seem to any more unsolved problem in this town I bought us tickets for our flight back home. What do you think my boy, is it time to return?"
'Home' that really was a word, that made Luke's entire body freeze. He had two homes. The one here with those people to where there for him when nobody else was and in London were he had a future, a life, a father. It really was a good question. Was Luke ready to return and leave everything that had happened behind. He looked into his father's eyes and saw nothing but sympathy and understanding. He knew what he had to do. It was time to let Céline go. Of course that would take its time but he had to begin sooner or later. And with Layton's help he was sure that he would be able to do so.
"Y-yeah. Returning home sounds like a plan.", Luke finally said, "I think it's time to go. But would it be okay if I, you know, give my old home a last visit to make sure that everyone's alright?"
"No!...I -I mean 'no'.", the professor at first yelled but regained control pretty fast," I don't think this would such a good idea. It would be better if you'd just let this past behind you very fast otherwise I highly doubt that you'll ever be able to go on."
Layton was uneasy and his son could clearly see that but Luke figured that it was because the Professor just didn't want Luke to fall back into this unreal drug-taking self. Never could he have guessed that the actual reason was Layton's fear that Luke might run into Céline and suddenly decide to stay back here. So all Luke could say was:
"Oh. Yeah. Okay. maybe you're right ... as always", both gave a small smile on that comment", We really should go and start packing. Give me, let's say, 20 minutes and we're off."
Luke ran back into his room at once only hearing his father calling after him:
"Easy easy my boy. We've got time. Our flight does not start until late noon."
The following hours we're just as usual as it could be. Getting the suitcases ready, cleaning up the apartment, thinking about a few puzzles and sometimes just talking and eating. After a little period of time, the Professor and Luke made their way towards airport, of course taking a cab since Céline could be walking around the city.
Once entering the plane, and taking their seats Layton was completely torn. He had never felt this guilty in his life, well except when he had slapped his own son. But this was going too far. Not telling his son that his girlfriend, who tried to kill herself because of him, was still alive... The professor did not know if he had ever dwindled down this much in his entire life. But deep down he tried everything to convince himself that he was doing the right thing.
"Dad?", a small voice ripped Layton out of his thoughts
"Yeah? What is it Luke?"
"Would you mind if I'd just sleep a while? I think a quick nap would be really nice. I mean I know you wanted to discuss some thing now but I'm just tired."
"Why Yes. Of course my boy. Just close your eyes and lay down for a bit. We've got time to talk when we're back in London.", Layton said smiling while taking one of his book and made himself ready to start reading when suddenly two rather small hands wrapped around his left arm and his son's head slowly found it's way to Layton's shoulder.
Luke was holding on, clinging to his father as if he was afraid of losing him again. When a little "Good night.", made it's way to the Professor's he, he put his book aside and put his other arm around the way too tiny body, turning in his direction.
"Good night son."
I promise, everything's going to be alright. I will never let anyone hurt you again. It will be just fine...
And hope that one day you'll be able to forgive me.
Layton's thoughts were torn. He knew that he had to tell Luke someday but he just did not know when it would be the right time. And he was too afraid of Luke's reaction if he'd find out that Céline lived his own father had known about it and refused to tell him. The important fact was that they both were on their way home. Luke would have a better life, a family and peace. It would take a while but everything was going to be alright...
The End
