A/N: Thanks for reading this story and here is another chapter. Yes McPherson is still a horrible horrible person. Maybe... he might just be misunderstood but no one really liked him did they?
No beta for me so all mistakes or inconsistancies are my own. oops.
Please enjoy the chapter. I had a lot of fun writing it. Okay... I lied, it was so fracking hard. ;) PS. I wrote this whole chapter and then realized that I didn't write the previous one. lol. It was still in my brain. :x
Helena was asleep downstairs after having left Myka to sleep in the bedroom alone, figuring they both needed some space. She told Claudia that their new friend found out about the well, and the red head stayed up to guard the mystical waters per H.G.'s request.
Myka was asleep and could still feel the empty space beside her. She could feel Helena's absence like a thorn in her side and she hated it. She was restless; tossing and turning. Myka hadn't had nightmares in such a long time, and she honestly couldn't tell if it was a nightmare she was now trapped in, or something different.
She couldn't breathe as she sat up, clutching her chest. Myka looked around the room and panicked at not being able to reach for Helena's warmth and safety. She blinked slowly and like an answered prayer, when heavy lids forced themselves open, Myka saw Helena rush to the bed and before she knew it, the Brit was holding her close.
"Helena?" Myka's voice was tired and worn from the crying she had done earlier that evening.
"Shhh. It's okay darling, I'm here." Helena rocked with Myka pressed against her, feeling the younger woman clawing at her to make sure she didn't leave again. "I'm sorry love. I'm so sorry." Helena could feel herself starting to tear up but stopped the tears dead in their tracks when the rest of the gang burst through her door and gathered around the bed.
"Sorry! We heard a scream." Pete was a mess, his hair swished in all directions. He obviously had a great night's sleep.
"A scream?" Helena and Myka said together, causing Myka to look at Helena confused.
"You didn't hear me scream? How did you..."
"I don't know. I just felt that something was wrong and I ran in here as fast as possible. I honestly had no idea you screamed." Helena gently stroked her thumbs across Myka's cheeks, gathering up the tears and making them disappear. "Did you have a nightmare?"
Myka nodded but quickly started to shake her head. "McPherson..." Myka whispered against Helena's chest.
Helena didn't want to but the shock of hearing that name caused her to pull away. "Did you just say McPherson?"
"Yes. His name was James McPherson."
Everyone fell silent, as they looked at Myka in disbelief.
"Myka you dreamt about James McPherson... why?" Helena wasn't moving back to hold Myka; she wanted to look Myka in the eyes when she told her everything about the dream.
"It wasn't a dream Helena. It was a memory." Myka didn't know how she went so long forgetting the man who found her one night catching fireflies. That night seemed so long ago, a different lifetime perhaps; but the idea that she could forget anything had left her speechless. "I... I didn't..."
"What did you remember?" The low voice called from the door and everyone backed away from the bed except for Helena who stayed firmly by Myka's side. "Myka?" Mrs. Fredric entered the room and everyone gave her space to sit on a chair next to the bed.
"I was outside one night and a man that I've never seen before came to my gate. He asked about you. I didn't even put it together when I first came here... I think I was in shock or something but... I think I saw him yesterday in the woods."
"The search party?" Helena thought back and couldn't remember seeing James among the suitors vying for Myka's hand.
"What search party?" Irene was frustrated with this whole ordeal. She didn't like that McPherson was so close to them and that he now had the help of a small group who would search for Myka until her father told them to stop; and he wouldn't tell them to stop.
"My father has a search party. I saw them in passing a few times, but we managed to avoid them. Who is James McPherson and why was he looking for you?"
"James was a young man when I met him." Everyone gathered around again. No one had heard this story told from the wise sage, they all had their own views on the situation. Whatever the perspective was, no one liked McPherson. Well... perhaps one person did. "He was a friend. We found him in the warehouse one day, just like we found you. You must understand Myka, the warehouse is nearly impossible to find unless you were meant to find it. So of course I took him in and we all grew close to him. He was family."
"What happened?"
"He found out about the well and he wanted to be like us. He was too young." Myka felt Helena stiffen next to her. She must have been thinking about Christina. "We told him no, that it wouldn't be fair to rob him of having a life." Helena relaxed against Myka, but the young woman knew that the Brit was trying to hide from her thoughts. She had told Myka something similar only a short while ago and now Myka was starting to see that immortality wasn't something you could just get over night without any thought. They wanted McPherson to live his life, grow up and learn about the world before deciding to stay in it for an eternity. There would be no rest and now Myka was seeing and understanding that.
"He got angry?" Myka asked. She knew the answer because when Helena told her no, she was furious; but more than that, she was devastated.
"He got very angry. He ran out one night in the rain and as soon as he walked out the door, the warehouse vanished. He couldn't find it again. I kept my eyes on him as he grew up and watched him search tirelessly for this place. He eventually left and I thought he was gone forever."
"Will that happen to me?" Myka wanted to know more about McPherson, but the thought of walking out one morning and never being able to find the warehouse again; to find Helena again, scared her more than anything.
"You'll be able to find the warehouse if you were meant to find it. The same goes for James, so I need everyone to stay inside for a little while. He shouldn't find us, but if he did find any of us outside of the warehouse; who knows what he would do. He wants the well and we can't let him have it. So no one leaves until I say it's okay."
Everyone just nodded. It was so silent as they all trickled out of the bedroom, leaving Myka and Helena alone on the bed. Helena started to get up to leave but stopped when she felt a soft hand wrap around her wrist. "Please don't go."
Helena slipped back into bed and pulled Myka to lay next to her. She wrapped her arms around the younger woman and fought the urge to serve her the water of life that hung around her neck. She understood the sacrifices made to have this life, and even though she told Myka no over and over the day before, she wanted this woman to be in her arms like this always.
"Myka?"
"Yes Helena?"
"I love you."
Myka gasped and rolled over in Helena's arms. She didn't know what she expected to see, but as soon as she locked eyes with the older woman, she could only see sincerity and truly every ounce of love and affection that someone could pour into a look. There were no words; except maybe three. "I love you." Myka sealed those words, that proclimation and promise with a kiss.
"I really do wish you could stay forever."
"I could..."
"No Myka. I love you so you can't. I want you to be with me forever, but that would just be selfish of me."
"I want to be with you forever. I don't care about anything else. How is that you being selfish?" Myka took Helena's hands in her own and refused to let go. She knew what she wanted, she knew how to get it; but she wanted Helena's blessing. She didn't know if she could live her whole life with Helena feeling regret and Helena didn't want to live an eternity with Myka knowing that she felt regret as well. "I won't resent you. I promise." She kissed Helena again. "Please."
"I think you should talk to someone else about this darling. I think... I think you should talk to Claudia. She's the youngest so to speak and I believe she can give you insight that I simply can't. We're too close you and I. We both want the same thing but neither of us are capable of truly understanding what that means."
"What are you gonna do while I'm spending the day with Claudia?" Myka turned to lay flat on her back, playing with Helena's fingers splayed open on her stomach.
"I think I need to seek counsel with Irene. She's always been able to help me see what's right."
Myka nodded and slowly tears rolled down the sides of her face. She could feel Helena's eyes following the liquid and could hear her breathing so close to her ear. Then she felt Helena kiss the tears away one, two, by the third kiss Myka turned her head and their lips met. Myka wanted to drink in every single detail about this moment. She didn't want Helena to move away from her, she just wanted to drown in the woman's essence.
"Myka we can't." Helena leaned her forehead against Myka's temple, now crying herself. "I know what you're doing darling, but we... we can't."
"Why not? I want to." Myka was adament. She knew what she wanted more than anything. "If you won't let me be with you forever, let me be with you right now. I know you feel the same way."
"Myka we just can't do this. I can stay here tonight and I can hold you and I can promise you that I'll be here when you wake up in the morning. But only if you agree that this isn't happening tonight."
Myka took in Helena's words and heard the way she stressed 'tonight;' meaning there was hope it could happen someday. She realized that Helena really did want to spend forever with her, she was scared and saying no was harder for her than it was for Myka to hear. "Okay." So she agreed and moved closer to Helena's warm body, curling up against her.
Neither woman said much more after that. They just silently drifted off in their own way. One of them allowing the tears to flow freely until her eyes were so heavy that there was no choice but to close them, the other fighting a bombardment of thoughts that flooded her mind. Thoughts about the warehouse, the well, McPherson, her family, and before sleep over took her, Helena.
Um... yeah. That's all for this chapter. Sorry about the abrubt ending. That's just how this ended up going. There's probably gonna be about 4 chapters more... maybe 5. Possibly 6. haha. Really depends on how much I want to go into the story. I do want to do some one shots of Myka and Helena's time together so there's more info of how they ended up getting closer. In order to move this story along, I couldn't go into every single day detail, so I jumped forward months and stuff like that.
Hope you enjoyed this chapter. I know... I hate drama which is why it's kind of light. I don't like really reading it or writing it, but we all know what this fandom is really about... angst and pain. :x
