Helena stood at the headstone, tears streaming down her face as she read the name that had haunted her; Myka Ophelia Bering. The woman she loved was buried here and there was nothing she could do but cry and wish to turn back time; telling Myka to drink the water and be with her forever. She hugged a paper close to her chest, it was worn and wrinkled, it had been cried on; this piece of paper that had been read by Helena every day for 83 years.
"I'm sorry it took so long for me to come back darling." Helena sobbed, kneeling at the grave. She touched her fingers to Myka's name, tracing the precious letters with her fingertips. Reading on as it said; 'I smell apples.' Helena smiled sadly. "I wish things were different. I wish I hadn't been so noble. I wish I had been selfish and kept you with me always."
"She was an amazing woman." A soft voice said from behind her. "It's what everyone says."
Helena turned around quickly, wiping the tears. "I'm sorry?"
"I'm Michael George Bering." The young man said. "Myka was my great aunt."
"George?"
"Myka named my dad George and that's where it came from." The boy shrugged.
"She was phenomenal." Helena whispered.
"You knew her?"
"We were very close, yes. I had been holding onto her for far too long and now I feel that I must let her go. I just... I wanted to be here to say a few things that I didn't say before." Helena clutched the letter Leena had written closer to her chest, taking deep breaths.
"I didn't know her. She died before I was born but everyone said she did amazing things. We talked about her in my History class."
"I am sorry you didn't have the chance to know her. She was truly an amazing woman. Your great aunt changed my life. She made everyone around her better. We all miss her very much." Helena fought off fresh tears, shaking her head as she stood. "It was a pleasure to meet you Michael." Helena shook his hand, gasping as she gazed into his eyes. "You have her eyes." She smiled her first real smile in years.
"Thank you. I have to go. I'm going to be late for classes." The boy ran off, waving goodbye.
Helena turned back to the grave. "I love you my darling. I have loved you every day since I met you." Reading the inscription once more she chuckled. "Apples... I wonder."
...
Helena walked through the once familiar woods; old paths hidden beneath the overgrowth, plants creating walls, security and warmth. She pushed pass branches, kicking up leaves, missing the feeling of her bare feet hitting the earth. Helena took off her shoes, took down her hair and took a deep breath, smiling as she felt the freedom and familiarity hit her all at once. "Home."
Eventually she reached the place she made... her secret place; a secret she had only shared with two other people, both long gone. The orchard was still there, still thriving and rich with life; after all that was the point. Life.
Helena saw in the center of the orchard a cottage. She cringed at the idea of someone making their home there. She walked slowly and cautiously, looking around to see if anyone was outside. Then suddenly a figure moved to the window of the small house. The woman in the window turned and looked out, catching Helena's gaze. Both sets of eyes darkened, faces going pale as though they had seen a ghost.
Helena ran toward the house, watching as the front door swung open. "Myka!" Helena gasped. "Myka! Is that really you?" She fell into the taller woman's arms, praying that it wasn't a dream. She smelled the same, everything felt so right. Helena sobbed into Myka's neck.
"Helena. I've missed you so much." Myka kissed the top of Helena's head. "I thought you'd never come back."
Helena finally gained enough control over her emotions to look into the beautiful girls face. 'No not girl.' Helena reminded herself. 'Woman.' And what a beautiful woman she had become.
"You look..."
"Older?" Myka chuckled.
"Beautiful. So so beautiful. You're... you're really here?"
"I really am and I have so much to tell you." Myka smiled. "But first..." She pulled Helena close and kissed her; their lips fitting together perfectly, just as they had years and years ago. Hands moved accordingly, rediscovering curves, old and new. Helena had more to discover about Myka. She got taller, she got curvier, but she was still Myka; her Myka. When they broke apart, needing air, Myka took Helena's hands in her own. "Come on." She guided her into the cottage.
"This is a beautiful home... but... how did you do all of this?"
Myka had Helena sit down and made her some tea. "Here." She sat across from her. "I became a politician after I graduated from university. I worked twice as hard as everyone else. I was the only woman running for office. When I got to where I needed to be, I started an organization to preserve the forest and all of it's inhabitants."
"You kept the warehouse safe so it wouldn't have to be moved." Helena took a sip of the tea; perfectly brewed and precisely how she had always loved it.
"I did. I knew that I was being watched by Claudia and Pete and Steve. I wanted so badly to run away with them and hide out but I promised that I would try to live my life. I got to a point where I had done what I was supposed to do and I wanted to wait for you. I never got involved with anyone. I never had children. I just wanted you Helena. You were the only thing missing from my life and even though I felt fulfilled, I always felt incomplete." Myka looked down at her hands, sinking into the chair. "I had to fake my own death. I didn't want anyone to know that I was alive. Not even anyone from the warehouse. I just... wanted to disappear and wait for you to come back." It was quiet. "Say something."
"Why did you decide that this was the point you wanted to stop your mortality?"
"I had been diagnosed with an incurable illness. I didn't want there to be a chance that you would come back to see me and... I would be bed ridden, sickly. I wanted to be with you forever and so I drank from the vial." Myka smiled, her eyes lighting up as she gazed into dark orbs. "I missed your eyes. I missed your smile. Everything."
"I missed you too my love. Every second of every day, you were on my mind. You followed me everywhere. My heart ached for you darling."
"I know the feeling." Myka left her seat and sat right next to Helena. "Before I was diagnosed, I had been sneaking out here a lot. I started coming out here and built this house. I would sleep under Christina's tree and dream of our life together."
Helena pulled Myka on top of her, hands roaming the taller woman's body. "Do you remember our first time together?"
Myka smiled and nodded, biting her lip.
"I couldn't stop thinking about it after that. I would play it over and over in my head." Helena moved her hand down the front of Myka's body. "I would think of how wonderful you felt as I touched you, how your body would respond to mine."
Myka moaned, rolling her hips forward, pushing herself against Helena's hand.
"Just like that." Helena smiled, kissing Myka's shoulder, her neck, her jaw and her lips once more.
"Helena?" Myka gasped.
"Yes my love?"
"Make love to me. Please." Myka's hands tangled into Helena's hair as she sighed, pulling the smaller woman even closer.
Helena's answer was simple as she slowly pushed Myka back on the sofa, her hand slipping into Myka's pants. Helena moaned as she felt the familiar damp heat touch her finger tips. She pulled her hand out and Myka watched as her fingers disappeared into her mouth. "You taste exquisite my love. Just as I remember."
Clothes were shed slowly as Myka walked them back to the bedroom and they fell into bed together, naked; hands roaming bare flesh, squeezing curves, nails scratching backs and thighs as they fought to hold onto each other, never wanting to let go ever again. The room was filled with moans, sighs and gasps as they felt each other for the first time in ages. It was all so familiar yet so new. They cherished each others bodies, took their time to worship goosebumps and shivers.
Helena made Myka come undone more than once, her fingers clenched between strong muscles, pulling her deeper, holding her possessively. She kissed her way around the taller woman's body, discovering new scars from many years of living. She discovered a scar left by a burn that Myka had gotten while helping put out a forest fire. She kissed every new discovery and welcomed back the ones she remembered from all those years ago. She made love to Myka, her lover and friend until Myka's body had tired.
They moved around each other, touched each other slowly and lovingly.
Myka's tongue eventually found Helena's center as she settled between her legs. Sighing happily as she tasted her lover once again. Myka teared up, so happy that this was real. She had this dream over and over and she always woke up alone. She knew that wouldn't be the case this time. Her lips latched around Helena's sensitive clit as she pushed toned thighs further apart.
Helena crashed over the edge, hands in Myka's thick curls, pulling her close, hips rolling as another wave hit. She screamed in pleasure, moaning loudly as she felt Myka's tongue inside her as though not a day had passed. Myka still knew exactly how to touch her and what she needed. Myka growled against Helena's wet folds, dragging her tongue up slowly, tasting her as she kissed her way up Helena's stomach, her breasts and neck. She kissed Helena deeply, bodies molding together; the puzzle that was Bering and Wells, put together as it was always meant to be.
"Wow! Oh my god that was amazing!" Helena laughed as she caught her breath, curling around Myka's body. "How did you do that?"
"I remembered. You're all I've really thought about every day and night. I never forgot what it was like to make love to you remember?" Myka tapped her forehead. "I couldn't forget even if I wanted to, which I don't."
"Myka Bering; you are perfect and I have missed you so much." Helena moved in to kiss Myka again but she stopped her.
"I love you and I know that I am older now... I have lines on my face and you know... gray hair. I should have dyed it before drinking the water..."
"Stop being silly darling. You are stunning. Even more beautiful than I remember." Helena caressed Myka's cheek, leaning in and capturing Myka's lips with her own. It was a kiss filled with longing, desire, need, want, purpose and most of all love. "I love you. I always have and I always will."
"Forever?"
Helena giggled against Myka's lips. "Forever."
Ahhhh! Okay so... we are done. I hope it was a cute and happy ending for all. I always knew that I wanted to end it this way. I hope you guys liked it. I love this story so much and I love the idea of this being able to have a happy ending. I wanted it to be different than the movie and book.
Thank you for sticking with me on this. I know it didn't have many readers, but I love all of you who went through this journey with me. I really appreciate everything. Please let me know what you thought.
I love you all. Truly. xoxo.
