An explosion off in the distance caught Jack's attention and he glanced at Teal'c, indicating they should follow it. In truth they had both already been heading in that direction after being informed that the UAV had been shot down. He doubted that it was an SGC member that had shot it down willingly bringing their position to any enemies remaining in the vicinity, but it was likely that the enemy had shot it down. His own first reaction was to run to it, to see if the enemy were around and defeat them. All of the training of any Air Force Personnel would send them, carefully, in the direction of the downed aircraft. It was his hope that any other survivors nearby would make their way to it. If Sam were still alive and saw the crash, her brain would immediately begin to process exactly how to use components of the craft to communicate or as a defensive weapon.
Gesturing for Teal'c to head around the other side of a clearing they were approaching, Jack could see a Super Soldier standing and firing its weapon. His eyes tracked to Super Soldier's aim and he saw a dirtied and bloodied figure crouching behind some rocks. From his distance, Jack could not tell who it was, but there was something distinctively human about the figure. Very briefly pausing in his run as the Super Soldier turned and began firing on Teal'c, Jack then made a slight detour and came out of the thick green treeline into brighter sunlight. Ducking down alongside the survivor, Jack took a second to assess the situation and fired the prototype weapon Jacob had given him. The Super Soldier faltered, but did not fall. He ducked back down and finally looked at the survivor, realising that it was Sam.
"You got the…" She passed him the upgraded power unit and he loaded it into his prototype weapon. After two shots the Super Soldier fell to the floor and Jack risked a quick glance at Sam. "Teal'c, cover him." Jack threw the weapon at Teal'c who grabbed it swiftly and aimed it at the, hopefully, dead Goa'uld.
"Is it…?" Sam whispered and Jack looked at Teal'c.
"It's dead, right?" Teal'c nodded and Jack allowed himself to relax slightly and relief flooded his entire body. She was alive and safe. She was injured, but she was alive. "You okay?"
Nodding and wincing at the same time, Sam made no other attempt to move. "I need to rest."
"We can wait here." There was so much that he wanted to say to her in that moment, but he knew that it was not the right place. There were still bodies to find, hopefully survivors too, but she needed a few moments before they began a slow journey back to the 'gate. He should radio for a medical team and after they arrived, he and Teal'c should continue their searching. Repositioning himself, Jack sat down next to her and put his arm out. Wordlessly, she moved into his embrace and rested her head against his shoulder. Each and every time that she had ever rested against him was burned into his memory, but this was different. This was the first real time that he had feared she was dead. "I thought… I worried…"
"I'm alive, Jack." It still felt odd to be on an alien world and hear her voice call him by his name. It was something to which he would never be able to get used. "Thank you for finding me."
"Any time."
"It's my job, you know – to do this."
"And it's my job to worry and rescue. You'll always be a member of my team, my responsibility."
"I'm sorry," she apologised and involuntarily he squeezed her a bit tighter, but she did not complain. "So much has changed in my life, in our lives and I had to learn how to play all my new roles."
"I coulda helped you with it."
"It needed to be me. I needed to find my own feet."
"Found 'em yet?"
Despite her obvious pain and the quietness of her voice, Sam laughed very slightly. "Yes, and they hurt."
"Well, that leg wound does look pretty bad."
Slowly and reluctantly, Sam sat up away from Jack and he got to his feet to help her to stand. She then leaned back against the boulder and took a deep breath. "Call for the med team, sir, I'm fine now."
Nodding, Jack made the call and then turned to her. "We'll wait until they get here. Just in case."
"You know the other night when we were talking about romantic moments?" Grinning, Jack nodded. "This is one of the non-traditional."
