This is still pre-Heroes. Mirrored in More Than Friends: Chapter 27
Just as Janet opened the next file on her pile, a knock on the door distracted her and she glanced up to see Lieutenant Carpenter standing in the doorway to her office. Beckoning with her left hand, Janet kept the file open and pen in her right hand, but motioned for Carpenter to enter. She had warmed to the younger lieutenant over the months since Osiris' far reaching actions. Perhaps it was purely because of Carpenter's prior aloofness that had kept Janet so cool towards her. It was just an awful shame that Carpenter had needed to go through what she did in order to find friends around her.
"What can I do for you, Lieutenant?" The moment when Carpenter came searching for MacKenzie after the Osiris mission was still vivid in Janet's mind, along with an initial, very short course of sleeping aids. She had already read the mission reports before Carpenter had visited, Janet knew what the team had each individually gone through – including the colonel. They were the same mission reports that Sam was now unable to read and was still in the dark about. It was never going to be Janet's call to tell her the truth, even if Jack were not so adamant that she could never be allowed to learn the truth.
"I was just having a talk with Daniel and it made me want to come and talk to you." Janet remained in silence, allowing Carpenter to speak at her own pace. "You've been amazing the past few months. I know that you'll argue that it's in your job description, but you never needed to give me as much attention and help as you have. Especially given all the other patients under your care."
With a grim smile, Janet said, "It's true that all my patients live life on the edge. I never have a dull day."
"I bet you wish you did."
"Quite often, actually. What I wouldn't give for a day when someone I know isn't injured, traumatised or killed."
"Well, I'm a bit less traumatised now, thanks to you. Thank you." Janet felt a warm glow spread through her at the thanks and, with a pleased smile, returned to the open file after Carpenter had gone.
