Scarlett Spears' POV

"This is the most fun ever! We've only been here for day and we've killed three people!" Jazmine screams with joy as she skips down the cobblestone streets of District Six without a care in the world, her spear strapped to her bulky beige backpack for easy access.

"Honestly, these games are too easy. Did you see the face of that girl we killed last night? 'Oh please don't kill me! Oh no! Don't read my poem!' Puh- lease. You'd expect more from a career district," she says with a mocking sneer. Being around Jazmine has always kept me on my toes. She can be so unpredictable. It frightens me to know that at any second, she could whip out her spear and skewer me like a shish kabob at a backyard barbecue. At every moment, I brace myself for the inevitable betrayal that is yet to come. Being on a team with Jazmine means that you can never let your guard down.

"And that fat kid was sooo pathetic. Hew as squealing like a pig before I killed him. A good sound for him though, seeing how that's what he looked like, a pig," Jazmine continues. Her talk about her murders is getting so annoying.

"Just shut up! You've told me about Aurora and Astar a million times!" I burst out. Jazmine looks at me with a mix of expressions. The first one being shocked, but then a sneering glare appears. But is her final expression that scares me the most, her glare turns indifferent and she just casually shrugs her shoulders. I don't know why her casualness worries me so much, but I can't help but feel like I have to be on my guard even more now. For all I know, she could be running plans through her psychotic mind. Plans to betray and kill me.

I hear a chiming noise as my worrying is interrupted by the sight of two parachutes floating down. One is quite large, while the other is slightly smaller.

"Jazmine. We've got more sponsors," I point out.

"Cool, I'll check it out!" Jazmine speed walks and catches the two packages in mid air. She hands me the smaller one, with the words 'Scarlett Spears, District Two' and keeps the other one for herself. I can't imagine what I would possibly need, but hey, people always come up with something. Inside my sponsor pack is a set of strange looking goggles. The lens is tinted an emerald green and the black strap has many different colored buttons on them. It try on the glasses and I look around. Everything is a dark forest green, from the sky to Jazmine's double sided axe. I do a double take. When did she get that? The only weapon she got from the center was a small wooden axe.

"What do ya think?" Jazmine asks, testing her new weapon on a merchants cart nearby. With one swing, she splinters the cart in half, sending small wood chunks in all directions.

"It's umm, great!" I say unsure. Just like that, Jazmine has become even more deadly.

"Oh, by the way, I also got some pain pills, in case we need some for whatever reason.

I see how it is. Jazmine, the crazy girl, gets a dedaly weapon and medicine. I get some strange goggles that don't even have a purpose. Maybe, though, I'll figure out what they're for.

James Rivers' POV

After their brief chat, Mace and Marble approach me with a spool of rope.

"Hey James, I was wondering if you would do us a favor?" Marble asks.

"Okay, sure. What do you need?" I offer.

"So we found out that there is an unwanted tribute nearby. So I was thinking that you could set one of those death traps that you specialize in? Use this rope and also, take the backpack and set it in the middle as bait," Mace orders me.

I do as I'm told and begin to set the trap, using the rope as a trigger system and the duct tape to secure it in place. The mechanism was that it the person steps in the rope, concealed by a some leaves I pulled from a tree, a knife, attached to the rope will swing out and hit the target. Mace said that the tribute is about five feet tall, so I positioned the knife so it would hit whoever it is in the heart. If this trap works, I could prove myself to Mace and Marble that I can be a fighter and a contribution to the alliance.

When I'm finished, I call the Mace over so he can admire my work.

"Great. This will work," he says, impressed, "James, I was wondering if you could go to the other side of the building to grab the secret food stash. It's on the window sill, hidden under some branches."

"Sure thing." I leave to find the food while Mace continues giving orders.

"Marble, you keep watch and Crystal, can you get some water out of that backpack over there?"

As I make my way to the other side, I look high and low for the food. I do find the window sill, but there doesn't seem to be any food on it. There must be some mistake, I'll just go back and double check that I'm looking in the right spot.

When I arrive back at the base, Mace and Marble are casually watching as Crystal goes for a backpack with some water. But this isn't an ordinary backpack. It's the backpack that I used as the bait for the... trap.

"Crystal no!"

But it's too late. The knife has already plunged into Crystal's chest. With a look of shock and sadness, she sinks to her knees and a cannon fires.

BOOM!

It all makes since now. Mace told me that the target was five feet, the same height as my sister. Also, if they saw someone, they would have just killed them instantly.

"Why?" I ask, tears pouring down my face. I look up at my so called allies, who are attempting to hide a sneering smile.

"Monsters... Both of you!" I scream. I turn and pick up my trident and backpack and race off down the streets of District Eight. My sister is dead. My best friend and companion. I will never be able to see her smiling face or hear her laugh. I immediately regret al, of the fights we had over the past few years. I never imagined that she'd die at my hand. I'm a murderer. I killed my own sister.

Dannin Grande's POV

It's been a day. An entire day since I was abandoned by Lacey. A day since Justice and Gertrude died. A day of being alone. After hearing the single cannon fire, I am surprised and can't help wondering which of us has died. Was it someone I knew? What if it was Lacey? Even though Lacey is infuriated at me, and vice versa, if she died, I would feel like it was by my blade.

Tears begin to fall from my eyes at the guilt. I never meant for anyone to get hurt. I didn't creat an alliance just to betray. I only wanted friends in this dire situation. What did I ever do wrong? Grandad, if you can hear me, please help me. Please.

Ever since he died, I would find myself going to him for comfort. Even though, he isn't alive, 'talking' to him always made everything better. Grandad, please help me. When nothing happens, I realize that it's hopeless. He's dead. This is the Hunger Games. Wishing doesn't make things get any better.

Suddenly, a silver parachute comes floating down towards me, glowing a slight orangey color since the setting sun is behind it. Makes since. I've heard rumors that the Capitol has developed mind reading technology. That's what they probably used to figure out our fears.

I quickly open the package and empty out the contents. Inside is a loaf of bread and some strange looking goggles. Curious, I put in the goggles and look around. Instead of the slight darkness of evening, the goggles let me see my surrounding as if it were the middle of the day. I can't believe it! Night-vision goggles! I'm sure that these will help tonight. I've got the best eyesight of the fourteen tributes left! Speaking of the fourteen tributes, they will be showing the faces in the sky soon. Sure enough moments later, the anthem plays and the faces of the fallen are shown.

The first three districts didn't have anyone dead today, so the first face is Crystal Rivers from District Four. It's sad to see a thirteen year old die in the games, but it's pretty much inevitable. The games almost never have a victor younger than sixteen. It seems like her twelve year old brother is still alive though. Next is the girl from Ten, Natasha Trent, the flirt. I never really knew her, but I do know that she's flirted with almost every boy tribute. Well, except for the fat and ugly ones and her brother. That would be weird.

After Natasha, the sky goes black and silence falls over the arena. Only two dead today. I guess that's good, but not good. There were fewer tragedies, but the gamemakers and audiences are probably getting restless. I try to push my worries aside and settle into a restless, dreamless sleep, worrying about the possible horrors to come tomorrow.
