Day Four of the Hunger Games
Heaven LaFratta's POV
Ever since I ran into Athena by chance, my whole experience in the games improved immensely. She cared for my arm, and shared her food with me, since I didn't get much from the center because I was unconscious. By now, with the care from Athena, who spent much of her training time at the survival stations, my forearm has stopped bleeding and the wound has begun closing. The other day, when I managed to stomach looking at it for the first time, I noticed a jagged scar forming where Edward cut me. I know that I will have that scar for the rest of my life, whether or not I die in these games. If I do end up winning, this scar will serve as a reminder of the games and the innocent lives ended. Eleven tributes have died so far, leaving only thirteen of us remaining. Last night, when Hayden's face appeared in the sky, I noticed a look of sadness on my ally's face. I don't know how well the two of them bonded, or if they even knew each other, but she seemed devastated. I guess it pretty much ruins the chances of your district winning, unless you do. Its like you have no one to depend on, no one to go to, to trust.
The two of us moved out of District Four days ago. We knew that it would be too dangerous staying in one spot. Only one person died yesterday, so unless there's some serious drama going on, we could all be in serious peril. The two of us are basically wandering through the arena aimlessly, going to almost very district, including our homes. At the moment, we are camping out in District One, eating the rest of the meal that I got a few days ago. Since the two of us are from the poorer outer Districts, we are used to Hunger and don't need to eat much. Therefore, we can make one meal last three days. Currently, we are sitting in a decent sized cottage in the suburbs of District One, enjoying the last of the small meal that Athena received yesterday. The food was weird, the main course was a triangular wedge covered in cheese and some sort of sauce. The label on it read 'pizza', which I'd never even heard of until now. For the side, there was a strange yellow prickly thing that seems rough on the outside, but soft and tangy on the inside. I can't believe the foods that they have in the capital, they're so... foreign. First 'root beer' and now pizza and pineapple.
The sun peaks high in the air, signaling noon as the two of us are snacking without a care. I'm surprised that we haven't run into any other tributes since the bloodbath. Even though almost half of the tributes are dead, I would have expected to have run into someone. Although I'm not complaining, it just seems peculiar.
Jazmine Vierra's POV
Woohoo! This is the most fun I've had ever! The rush of everything, the adrenaline pumping, all of this is amazing! I already know that I will be winning this thing. However, the only not so good thing about winning is that I'll never be able to go back into the arena. A shame really, the games are so much fun! Scarlett would probably be the only thing that would get in my way of victory, but she'll be easy to dispose of. I'm just waiting for the exact right moment to betray my 'ally'. But for now, she's just my pawn. My right hand girl. That's all she is, nothing special, just a stepping stone to victory.
The two of us have barely stopped moving the past few days, since we wanted to cover more ground and kill more tributes. However, we haven't found anyone for a few days. But it seems like not many people have. There was only one death yesterday and two the day before, one of them caused by us. There are thirteen tributes left, including us, so there's plenty people left for us to get rid of. Twelve more deaths and I will be the victor! Once again, I think these games are way too easy.
As if the Gamemakers can read my mind, I hear a shrill screeching noise coming from my left.
"What is that?" Scarlett asks, a slight tremor in her usually strong voice. Suddenly, a large figure appears from behind a building. The mutt appears to be an oversized bat, with wings spanning about seven feet each and long legs with claws stretching towards the two of us.
Quickly, I reach behind me and pull out my double sided axe and grasp it, ready to attack. Scarlett aims her bow and arrow and fires a single shot, piercing the bat in the chest. However, it just shrinks and ignores it, not once breaking its charge at us. Scarlett tries to fire a few more arrows, hitting it in the head, wing, and leg, but still the beast is unfazed. Clearly, ranged attacks won't work, but the mutt is too high in the air for me to mêlée.
"Wait! Wait for it to come down and then I'll attack!" I call out, my axe ready to swing, "Alright, you're going down, mutt."
When the bat makes a beeline for me, I swing my axe like a baseball bat at its leg, maiming it. It winces for a second, but then, a golden glow appears where I wounded it and a new leg grows replacing the first one as good as new.
"Is this thing invincible?!" Scarlett cries, exhausted from dodging attacks from the bat.
"Time to kill again!" I scream as I lunge at the mutt, going for the head. In one swish of my axe, I decapitate the bat and it falls to the ground. Correction, through the ground. The cement road below it completely melts, swallowing the bat, then going back to normal when the creature is completely gone.
"Party's over. Let's go."
Starr Lynan's POV
It's been a long four days in the arena. Judging by the position of the sun, it's around four o clock and I haven't eaten at all today. I finished off my beef jerky yesterday, leaving me with absolutely nothing left to eat. I should have taken more food when I left the careers. My empty stomach growls and rumbles constantly, reminding me that I don't have anything to eat.
As I'm wandering through the streets of District Twelve, I try to keep my mind off of my empty stomach. But it's hard when there are groans and growls coming from it every other second. Maybe if I get some rest, I can take my mind off of food. Therefore, I go into the nearest building to rest. The building didn't seem special on the outside, just a sort of warehouse. But when I step inside, I know that something is wrong. Inside the warehouse, a cool breeze begins to stir, surprising me. I turn around, about to leave, not liking this situation, when the doors blow shut with a loud bang. Suddenly, I hear voices. They are faint at first, but they soon grow louder.
"District Twelve... Fallen... Girl on fire... Maysilee... Quarter Quell... Mellark... Star crossed lovers..." Many different voices whisper, some that I recognize, like Caesar Flickerman, others that are alien to me.
Suddenly, many figures appear, seemingly from nowhere. They are all teenagers, with a slight blueish glow to them. I take in the many faces, and I happen to recall many of them. They are all past tributes of the games. The first person I see is Aaron Furnace, the boy from last year who placed sixth in the games. Another tribute is Peeta Mellark, one of the star crossed lovers. I wonder where Katniss is? A figure sneaks up behind me and I recognize Freaton, who died in the bloodbath. They all seem peaceful and tranquil at first glance and I'm not worried, but suddenly, they all spring into action, summoning weapons from nowhere. I dodge a sword strike from a blond haired boy and a knife from a tall girl with dark hair. I whip out my knife, and try to evade the fallen tributes. They only seemed to be the District Twelve tributes, which is fortunate because I'd be dead already if this was Two. But I can only block for so long.
I've managed to kill off two of the tributes, Maysilee who died in the 50th games, and the boy from the eighty fourth. But there are still many more left. I'm exhausted to the point where I feel like I could collapse. I take out one more, who happens to be none other than Freaton until I find myself face to face with Katniss Everdeen.
Before I can make a sound or even panic, a narrow flies through the air towards me. The last thing I see before darkness is a look of sadness in Katniss's eyes.
Marble Monarch's POV
BOOM!
"And that makes twelve," Mace says with a sneer. Only half of us are left. I wonder who died though.
The two of us have been doing fairly well since James and Crystal are gone. But I can't help but feel a little bit of guilt. Crystal trusted me, along with James. Now Crystal is dead and James could be, too. But I can't let guilt keep me from winning. I volunteered because I was okay with being a murderer. I am fine to watch people die at my hand. I am not a sentimental softy. That's what I have to keep telling myself, so I can win.
Mace and I are camping out in the outskirts of Nine, taking a break from practicing with our swords on trees. The sun has already set and night has fallen over the arena. That means that it's time for the faces in the sky.
On cue, the music plays and one face is flashed into the starry night. Luckily, it wasn't James. Instead, it is the girl from District Nine, Starr.
"Serves her right," Mace laughs. He never did forgive her for the scam with Heaven. As for me, I'm sort of glad that I wasn't involved in that sort of trickery. Not that it matters. I can't undo the past.
