You look at her picture, the one you keep in the necklace she gave you all those years ago. The necklace was a little flame, because she knew how much you loved fire. It opened up to a picture of you and Dean on one side, and you and her on the other.
You take a deep breath, and try to hold back the tears that threaten to fall.
Everything was perfect, when you were in Hogwarts. She grew up in your seventh year - you all did. It's not like you really had a choice. 'We Gryffindors have to stick together,' you told her. Dean was gone. Harry and Ron were gone. Hermione was gone. There wasn't many of you left anymore.
You started dating, and Merlin it was perfect. It was secret at first, with stolen kisses and childish giggles. Then you fell in love, you fell so deep not even death could pull him out.
'You've sold your soul to the Devil,' Neville joked when you told him. Naturally, you responded. 'I'm sure you would know all about that, Neville, what's going on with you and Luna?'
You couldn't be happier, despite the fact that your best mate was out who knows where doing who knows that, and he might not even be alive. That was one thing Lavender was really good at, she stopped you from thinking about Dean too much, stopped you from entertaining gruesome notions that he might be dead. Or worse.
You were perfect. She was perfect. You would be forever, you would. The two of you were too perfect to not be forever. She was the flame in the darkness, the eternal light that never went out. Until it did.
You think back on the battle with bittersweet memories. People tell you that you should be grateful you survived, they say it's time to let go of the past. You're young, they say. You'll move on, find someone new. It was just a high school fling.
But they don't know how you felt about her, they don't see that you've been living in the dark ever since your flame went out. They don't know that you no longer believe in forever, because forever is too good to be true.
