CHAPTER SIXTEEN: Easter Greetings

Harry and Hermione stood on Platform 9¾ waiting for the train to pull in. Hermione was feeling nervous again. It was the first time Rose and Hugo would be spending part of the school holiday with them since her memory loss and she had no idea how to act around them.

"What did we do last Easter?"she asked.

"Played Quidditch,"Harry said absent-mindedly, then turned on her anxiously. "Don't try that, okay? You kept falling off your broom even with your memories."

Hermione gave him an icy look. "I'll try and remember that."

The platform filled with smoke as the train pulled in. Students filed out of the carriage. The group of James, Albus, Rose, Lily, Hugo, Martin, Emily and Scorpius got off together. Neville and Luna reached them before Harry and Hermione reached them. "Hello,"Luna greeted her two children in a distracted manner. "Did you learn anything?"

"I did, Martin didn't,"Emily replied.

"That's nice."

"Looks like this is our stop,"Martin remarked, shaking hands with James and Albus. "See you in a couple of weeks."

James gave Emily a quick kiss and held up a small mirror. "I'll talk to you soon."

Rose took in the mirror in James' hand and the identical one in Emily's hand and her mouth dropped open. "Where did you get that from?"

"It was James' Valentine's present,"Emily explained before skipping away with her family.

Rose looked at James accusingly. "You stole that idea off me!"

James shrugged. "It was a good idea. Doesn't have to be mine."

Rose looked like she was going to carry on complaining but Scorpius awkwardly patted her on the shoulder and nodded to the other end of the platform where his mother was waiting. "I've got to go now as well."

Rose's expression softened instantly and she smiled shyly at him. "Okay." He kissed her lightly before heading off.

"Right!"Harry announced, taking advantage of her distraction to take control of the situation. "You five, in the car."

The next week passed in a mass of polite but awkward conversation and general avoiding each other, much like any family holiday. James and Rose spent a fair amount of time in their rooms chatting with their partners on their mirrors while Albus was left to entertain Lily and Hugo with games of wizard chess or exploding snap. The only times the whole family were together at meal times.

And so it was at breakfast on Easter Sunday that Harry entered the room while everyone else was eating and cleared his throat. "We're going to have an easter egg hunt."

The comment did at least inspire a small amount of interest from his audience. "What easter eggs?"Hugo asked cautiously.

Harry produced a tray full of five large eggs. "These ones."

He received a series of confused expressions in return. "Found them?"Rose ventured.

"Yes,"Harry confirmed. "But can you catch them?" He took out his wand and pointed it at the eggs. "Reformabit!"

The eggs suddenly sprouted legs and jumped off the tray, dashing out into the back garden. Lily and Hugo eagerly jumped down from the table and ran after them. James and Albus were a step behind, Albus stopping beside Harry. "Great idea, Dad,"he congratulated before heading out after the others. Rose took a few seconds to consider whether she was too old to chase easter eggs before giving in and joining the others.

Harry smiled at Hermione and offered her his arm. "Shall we join them?"

"There!"Rose shouted, seeing one of the eggs scampering around the hedge. Albus took a flying leap and managed to grab hold of it.

"That's why they made him seeker,"James remarked.

Lily already had a large egg under one arm. Hugo was chasing after one, which was running round in circles. Lily stepped into its path, scooped it up and handed it to Hugo.

Hermione noticed one of the eggs was stuck walking back and forth between two ornamental flower beds. "Psst, Rose,"she hissed.

Rose followed her gaze, smiled and picked the egg up. "Thanks, Mum."

Soon, all five children had an egg in their hands. Harry drew his wand again and pointed it at the eggs. "Revertabit,"he snapped and the eggs went back to normal, the legs disappearing. He put an arm round Hermione's shoulder as the children carried the eggs inside. "Well, I know what they're going to be doing for the rest of the morning…"
