CHAPTER NINETEEN: Help in Unexpected Places
Harry stood kissing Hermione in the hallway, not wanting to stop. "I can always cry off work and stay here,"he suggested.
Hermione smiled at him. "Tempting as that is, I've already arranged to spend the day with someone else."
Harry gave her a curious look. "Oh? Who?"
It was at that moment that Luna came wandering in the front door, having apparently decided to bypass the tradition of knocking. "Oh, hello, Harry. Are you still here?"
Harry coughed. "I was just going."
"Have a good day!"Hermione called after him.
"Looking out for fire fiends!"Luna put in.
"What are fire fiends?"Hermione asked her.
"I'm not really sure. But he should look out for them all the same."
Hermione linked arms with the other woman. "So, what are witches supposed to do when they decide to have a girls' day together?"
"I don't know. I was hoping you'd tell me."
Hermione looked slightly crestfallen. "I don't remember."
"Well, when we've spent time together before, it usually involves lunch."
"Lunch sounds good. Do you have any suggestions?"
"Eating it in the middle of the day usually works."
Hermione sighed. "Is there anywhere we could go for lunch?"
Luna looked down at Hermione's hand. "Are you holding tight onto my arm?"
"Er, yes. Why?"
Luna got out her wand and prepared to apparate. "I wouldn't like to leave any of you behind."
Rose was alone in the Gryffindor common room when James and Scorpius came in. "I think you've been avoiding us for the past week,"James noted.
Rose glanced at Scorpius. "Aren't you in the wrong common room?"
"He's here as my guest,"James replied. "And don't change the subject."
"What do you want me to say?"Rose asked. "I want to help Mum and you think I'm wasting my time."
"We did think that,"James admitted.
"But now we want to help you,"Scorpius concluded.
Rose was surprised. "Why the change of heart?"
"Because when you say something, it usually pays to listen,"James replied.
Rose sighed. "It's a shame you were right then. I've looked through every book I could find on the subject. There's nothing. No line of research for me to follow, nothing that could lead to a cure."
James thought about this. "Maybe we're looking at it the wrong way."
"What do you mean?"
"Something Dad said. Maybe a cure already exists."
Rose realised what he was getting at. "Harriet Kenwood."
"Who's Harriet Kenwood?"Scorpius asked.
"The first person to get her memory wiped. A healer who was on the verge of finding a treatment for memory charms."
"Dad thought that she had her memory wiped to stop her curing anyone else,"James concluded.
"Then how does that help us?"Scorpius asked. "If we can't cure Rose's mum, then we can't cure her."
"Maybe she can cure herself,"James suggested. "If she could, there's someone in this castle who could know how."
