LANI P.O.V
Today was the day. The day I had been counting down to for the past two months. The surf comp was on. I had been shifted into solos and Maddie was my replacement in the trio. I was anxious about the surf part because I hadn't been in the water for the last month and a half, even then I wasn't surfing. That morning when we went down for registration the weather was a bit on the dark side.
"Great, running in the rain sounds fun if you want the next week off school with a cold" I said
"Huh?" Asked Casey
"Not a bad idea though"
"What?"
"You know my bet with Heath. He said I had to finish school but he never said I had to attend it"
"What be?"
"$50 if I finish year 12"
"I don't think you can have a cold for the next year and a half"
"you never know"I laughed
The mangrove kids began to show up. They were tolerable but not when the sniper was on the loose. I was waiting for the day she finally got fired but that was never gonna happen. I thought with all the things she did she would be, but shes not because she keeps framing it on us.
The trios began at nine and the solos were at 12. I decided to stay and watch Maddie, Jett and VJ. I was fin being in the solos because I was very impatient when it came to waiting for the next person to finish so I could go. Turns out they came first, only just though. John was pretty pleased with himself.
"That's my team!" He chanted
I could see Jett and VJ cringing as if they didn't know this person and Maddie just laughing about it. How would he react when it came to solos? I really didn't want to know.
It was 10 minutes before the solos and I was getting nervous. There was no Heath or Brax or Ricky or Bianca only Casey.
"Don't worry he'll be here soon" He said to me
"I hope so"
"Good Luck" He said walking off
"Whats Luck?" I asked sarcastically "I don't need that"
Casey Laughed
5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO!
The race began we all ran into the cold choppy water looking like we were running on hot coals. I could hear the boys scream as they went in. One downside of school, Health. I was the second out of the water. When it came to running I was against a kid from mangrove. I could see they were gonna lose. Not just because they were against me but because they started of sprinting, they were gonna be dead by the end of this. I was right, they weren't but they did come 5th and no guessing who came first. As soon as I saw Brax and Ricky at the finish line I was running faster than I knew I could.
"That's my sister" Brax said coming up and hugging me
I'd never seen him so happy before
"Hey Champ" Ricky said coming up and hugging me as well.
"I haven't won yet there's still the surf part."
"You'll ace it, your a Braxton" Said Brax.
He was never the type of person to say it but I guess he could. Not long before we went surfing the sun finally came out. Someone was on my side. Part of me wished it was my dad but I knew that wasn't true.
With the rain gone the massive swell went too. There wasn't even a little wave. My group was the second to paddle out. The group before us hadn't gone too well, that was promising for us. I turned my board around and faced in waiting for a wave. I closed my eyes and wished for something good to happen in the next five minutes. I could feel the waves getting bigger. I went to catch what I thought was the best wave but i missed it, and good thing I did it was the worst you could get. I waited and waited till I was the last on out. Before time was up the sky went grey and the swell began to get bigger. I caught the biggest wave in and I was in before I knew it.
We wouldn't get the results till later on so I hung out with Jett, VJ, Maddie and Josh.
"Who do you think won solos?" Asked VJ
We all looked at him
"Who do you think" Said Jett
"Its not official yet" I said
"Of course its gonna be you"
I could see Brax and Ricky on the jetty. They looked to be talking about something. Brax had been acting a little strange since the Barrett's had showed up but I didn't know why.
BRAX P.O.V
As I stood on the jetty I watched Lani messing around with Jett, VJ, Maddie, and Josh getting thrown in the water. It made me happy to see her happy. I was just hoping what I was about to tell her would ruin it. As I walked down to where they were I could hear laughter, something I hadn't heard in a long time.
"Lani" I called out
"What" She said walking up to me
I looked at the other guys in the water then looked at her. I couldnt say it there and then
"What do you want for tea tonight champ"
Her smile got brighter
"Pizza" She said
"Ric and I are gonna go home but we'll be back for the awards"
"OK" She said running back into the water.
LANI P.O.V
"Alright guys, Awards" John said walking up to us
We all walked out of the water looking like drowned rats
"Well that's great isn't it" He said looking at us
"Don't worry, we'll dry quick enough" Said Jett
"You better"
"First place for the Teams, Summer Bay Surf n Turf" The caller announced
"Surf n Turf, really Jett" I said
"Hey dont dis" He replied walking off
"And Finally First for the Solos, Lani Braxton"
I was nervous to go up but with the other three already up there I was glad to go up.
That afternoon when we got home I was so close to bombing out on the couch.
"Hey, Whats with the sticky note stack" Said Casey "5 Days"
"Till I can drive "I replied
"Stay off the roads!" Joked Heath
Brax sat quietly at the kitchen table
"I need to tell you guys something" He said
"Brax not now" Replied Ricky
"Why whats going on" Asked Casey
