HEATH P.O.V
"And what would my girl have to do with Joshua Barrett?"
"It was just something that happened at the beach this morning" Said Casey
"Like what?"
"Andy punched Case cause of Brax"
"That'll teach ya" She said to Casey
"I don't need to hear this" Casey said walking to his room
"What's going on?" Lani asked walking into the lounge room
"Nothing" I said looking at mum
"Alright then" She said drying her hair with a towel
"We need to talk" Mum said to her
"No ya don't" I said
"Don't worry Heath" She said throwing the towel on the couch
LANI P.O.V
"What do you want to talk about" I asked walking outside
"Have you thought about it yet?" She asked
"Yep" I said "And the answers no"
"why"
"Life's going good here and i'm finally getting along with Case"
"Fair Enough"
That was one of the reason's but the main one was that I was afraid it would go back to the way it used to be. mum would come home drunk ever night and bring strange men home with her. I didn't want that anymore.
RICKY P.O.V
When we got to the court-house I only wanted to see one person. I wanted to hear his voice one more time, feel my hand against his. We all went into the court room. I could see Lani was scared. She wasn't used to this like Heath or Casey.
"Hey, its gonna be alright" I said sitting next to her
"How long's this gonna go for?" She asked
"I dunno Lan"
We sat there and listened to the evidence get stacked up against Brax. The way it was looking he had no chance of getting off.
"Court will be adjourned until September the 9th" Said the judge
And just like that it was over
LANI P.O.V
It sounded like Brax had no chance but there was one thing that was missing. There was no body. No body no proof. The next trial was till the 9th of September, and what a great day that would be. My 16th birthday. Hopefully it would be good news. He would be free and I would have my brother home for my birthday.
When we got home no one said anything
"They can't sentence him, there's no body"
"Lani, will you just shut up" Said Heath
"Heath don't" Said Casey
It went quiet
"Lani im sorry" He said
"Don't be" I said walking to my room
It was getting to us all. Hopefully this would be over soon
THE TRIAL: September 9th
LANI P.O.V
I sat on the seat out the front of the court-house. Everyone else was inside. I was trying to build up the courage to go inside. I didn't see him come up to me which kind of startled me
"Hey" He said
"Hi" I replied
"OK if I sit down"
I nodded my head
"Now are you"
"Alright i guess"
"Happy Birthday"
I looked at him about to cry
"Thanks, lets just hope it is"
He handed me an envelope
"I hope it all goes good"
"What are you doing here anyway" I said "Why would you want to see him get let off when he killed dad"
"Cause I don't want to see you get hurt" he said "And after dad died he was more like a dad than our real dad was"
He kissed me on the cheek. I closed my eyes and pretended nothing happened
"See ya" He said walking off "Don't forget to open the envelope"
I looked at it. It was just plain white and nothing special about it. I didn't open it then and there I was going to wait till after the trial.
"You gonna come inside now?" Asked Ricky
"Yeah" I replied
I had missed all of the start and went in before the sentence was given. When I walked in I looked at Brax. I could see the fear in his eyes
The judge began to talk.
"Mr Braxton you have confessed to involuntary murder. Talking into account the length of your deceit, your evasion of punishment, and the fact that the body is unable to be recovered. It is the decision of this court to sentence you to 15 years imprisonment with a non parole period of 10 years"
I felt like the wind had been knocked out of me. I couldn't breathe. I held Casey's hand tightly. I looked at mum, she was just as shocked as we were. 15 years. That would be 2028. I'd be 31. Brax would have missed just about most of my life.
We went out side t watch Brax get taken away from us for the next 15 years. He got brought out by two cops, one either side. I felt like running up and hugging him
"Heath look after her for me" Said Brax
"I will mate"
I didn't know who he was talking about, me or ric.
"Just keep your head down eh"
Something caught my eye. Someone was walking towards Brax. I didn't know who they were. Before I knew it all hell broke loose
"She's got a gun!" Someone yelled
"Brax NO" I screamed. I tried to run towards him but Casey was holding me back
Someone pushed past us to try to stop her but it was too late. 1 gun shot. 1 person down. I watched them slowly fall to the ground. everything was going in slow motion.
