"Nick" Zoe called in a hushed voice, nudging him at the same time in an attempt to wake him up, "Nick" She repeated, this time sitting up in bed and shaking him as she tried not to scream in pain.
Nick slowly began to awake as she called his name one more time, still unaware of what was happening around him, "you alright Zo?" He mumbled, still half asleep with his eyes shut tight.
"The baby's coming" She said in between pants as her breathing started to become more labored.
At this point Nick was now fully awake as he sat up in shock to what was happening, "are you sure?" He asked, turning to look at his wife who was clearly in pain, sweat dripping from her entire body.
"Yes I'm bloody positive" She snapped in pain.
"Well sex really does induce labor then" Nick laughed.
"Nick shut up" Zoe yelled, her face grimacing with pain. She wasn't in the mood for Nick's jokes or comments right now.
Nick pulled back the duvet to get a better look at what was happening, "How long in between contractions?" He asked her as though she was a patient.
"About 4 minutes" Zoe guessed "When I say this baby is coming, I mean this baby is coming right now" She screamed as another strong contraction took over her body.
"OK sweetheart, just calm down" Nick calmly tried to soothe and reassure her, "I'll call an ambulance" he said, reaching for his phone from the bedside table he began to dial 999 and requested for an ambulance.
"Ring my mum" She ordered, worrying about who was going to take care of the kids.
Nick did as he was told and rang Marie to come and take care of the children.
He knew how this process worked more than well and knew very well that an ambulance would take at least 10 minutes to arrive, so he decided that he would check and assess Zoe himself to see how dilated she was.
"Right Zo, I'm going to see what's happening" Nick explained to her, before pulling down her knickers and assessing her, "You're about 8 cm already" He gasped in surprise "this little one isn't hanging around"
"Oh god it's too early Nick" She cried, extremely worried and concerned as her baby was more than 13 weeks early.
"Shhh it'll be fine" He tried to calm and reassure her as he removed loose strands of hair from her sweaty forehead. He got up and headed over to the window as he heard the sound of an engine pull up, "the ambulance is here now" He said, seeing them pull into the drive way, "I'll go and let them in" He told her before slipping on his tracksuit bottoms and racing downstairs in a panic.
Much to his relief it was Jeff and Dixie who had arrived when he opened the door, so they quickly raced upstairs to Zoe.
"Hi Zoe darling" Dixie said as she entered the room setting down her medical bag on the floor "Let's check you over shall we"
Once Dixie had checked Zoe over once more, they assisted her downstairs and into the ambulance where Jeff quickly raced to get to Holby, knowing that they hadn't much time.
"I need gas and air now" Zoe shouted as soon as they got into the ambulance, "Nick give me the gas and air" She demanded.
"Dixie she needs gas and air" Nick said, looking around the ambulance to find it for himself, he would do anything to put her out of this pain right now.
"Here you go darling" Dixie said, passing the tube containing gas and air over to Zoe to try and help with her pain.
"Is it too late to have an epidural?" She screamed as another contraction took over her body.
Nick chuckled "Yes sweetheart, it's way too late for that"
"This is exactly why I never wanted another baby" She yelled in pain, taking another intake of the gas and air.
"I know, I'm sorry, but in a few hours we will have our beautiful little boy"
"Oh god I need to push" Zoe cried out as a sudden urge took over her.
Dixie assessed Zoe one more time and when she realised that she was now fully dilated, she looked over at Nick in concern, "We're going to have to deliver on route" She said.
"No I can't" Zoe protested, screaming in pain "It's way too early" She cried.
"Zo, listen to me" Nick said, grabbing hold of her hand and rubbing his other hand over her hot and sweaty forehead "You trust me don't you?" He asked, looking directly into her eyes.
Zoe kept her eyes fixed on Nick which helped to take her mind off the pain, "Yes" she nodded.
"Right then I'm going to deliver our baby" He informed her, rolling up his sleeves to prepare for delivery "trust me everything is going to be just fine" he said in a hushed and soothing voice to try and calm her down.
