"Zoe" Nick called as he noticed that she was now awake, although she did look extremely exhausted. He rushed over to her bedside, kissing her on the forehead to greet her "Hey, how you feeling?" He softly asked her, stroking the top of her head, "You gave me a fright there"
"I've had better days" Zoe groggily replied, trying to let out a smile for Nick "What's going on?" She asked, with tears beginning to build up in her tears.
"You had a hemorrhage darling, but they've managed to stop the bleed" He told her, pausing before he told her the information that she was really waiting for "Our little boy is so beautiful" He told her, taking hold of her hand.
Zoe let a single tear fall down her cheek, she knew that Nick wasn't being entirely truthful with her "Please just tell me Nick" she begged with urgency in her voice.
"He's not too good Zo, they've taken him up to Neo" He told her. She completely broke down as he said those dreaded words. She'd been through this once before and her worst nightmare was happening all over again "Shhh" Nick tried to soothe and calm her, holding her tightly in his arms as he positioned himself onto the bed.
She buried her head into his chest as the tears continued to fall "This can't be happening" She hysterically sobbed.
"He will get through this" Nick tried to reassure her "Phoebe did, and look what a beautiful little girl she has turned into"
"Phoebe wasn't this early" She cried "I can't do this again" She continued to sob into his chest, gripping tightly onto him for comfort.
Nick placed a single finger under her chin, lifting it up so that he could see her face "Yes you can" He supported her, rubbing his hand down her back for comfort "We will get through this together, I promise" He said, kissing the top of her head.
"I really can't do it Nick, I don't want to go through all of this again" She cried, resting her head weakly back onto Nick's chest.
"He needs his mum to be strong right now" He continued to try and convince her but it wasn't working.
"He doesn't deserve me, I can't even carry and protect him for the most important 9 months of his life"
This really hurt Nick to see her blaming herself like this, he had never seen her so upset and broken than what she was now, "Don't you dare blame yourself for this, you know that this is just one of those things that happens" He said in a firm voice.
Zoe shook her head, she wasn't having anything that he was saying, "I've already failed him on the one thing he needed me the most for" She sobbed.
"He is a lucky little boy to have you for a mum, you are already the most fantastic mother" He soothed, removing loose strands of hair that fall across her wet and tearful face.
Zoe sat up to look at him, "You're not listening to me, I really don't want to do this" She snapped, annoyed that Nick wasn't even considering her feelings right now.
"Zoe" Nick spoke, placing an arm across her back, desperately trying to talk her around. He knew it was hard for her right now, but it was for him too.
"You don't understand how much it killed me watching Phoebe day after day fight for her life and this is going to be ten times worse"
"But you didn't have me then, I'm going to be here with you every step of the way" He said with promise in his voice, "Do you want to go and meet him?" He asked, hoping that once she met him everything would change.
"No" Zoe shook her head in refusal "I'm not seeing him"
Nick took his arm from around her and climbed off the bed, "I can't believe how selfish you are being, your son, our son, is fighting for his life and you couldn't care less" He snapped. He knew he was being harsh shouting at her, it was an extremely difficult situation for the both of them but hiding away was not the answer.
Zoe's tears were beginning to fall hard and fast once again, "I do care, I just can't do it" She cried, begging Nick to understand.
Nick shook his head and stormed out of resus, heading straight to his office, he couldn't listen to this right now. He went inside and poured himself a double shot of whiskey, drinking it in one without hesitation. He sat at his desk, rubbing his hands through his hair in frustration. He couldn't believe she was doing this.
He picked up his phone and began to dial a familiar number, "Marie" He spoke as she answered the phone "You're needed here as soon as possible, I can't do this alone" He said before hanging up. Marie was his only other option of talking Zoe round, he didn't what else to do with her. He needed his strong wife back and so did their son.
