"Hello little man" Nick softly spoke as he peered into his son's incubator. He had so many wires and tubes covering his tiny little body. Weighing only 2lbs 8oz he barely took up a quarter of the space in his incubator. Nick watched as his tiny little chest rose up and down at an increased pace; working to it's best ability to keep on fighting.

Being back in Neonatal again brought back so many memories. It was this very room that had brought him and Zoe back together and he knew that the birth of their daughter was what had pushed them back into each other's lives. Without Phoebe he probably would have never had the courage to leave Yvonne and things would have been a whole new story right now. So for that, he was grateful.

He pulled up a chair as he continued to watch his precious little boy. He looked the spit and image of Phoebe when she was first born and Nick knew he was going to also take after his mothers good looks "You look just like your mummy" He cooed, as he peered through the glass. He smiled slightly as the little boys toes curled in; he clearly knew his daddy's voice already.

"I know you're probably missing the sound of her voice right now, but I promise you, she will see you very soon" He spoke as though he was reassuring him that everything was going to be just fine.

"And you have 2 big sisters and a brother that are just going to love you" He whispered.

Nick spun around as he heard the door swing open. A small part of him was hoping that it would be Zoe, but it wasn't, it was the NICU doctor.

"Hi Mr Jordan" He sympathetically smiled, walking over to him and standing the opposite side of the incubator, checking that everything was in good working order.

"How is everything?" Nick asked, standing up to watch everything that he was doing.

"He is struggling breathing due to his lungs lacking surfactant, which is why we are just helping him to breathe for a little while. All of his other organs seem to be working fine however but of course he is also struggling to control his temperature" He explained.

Nick nodded to show his understanding, peering back into the incubator.

"How is your wife doing?" The doctor asked, conversationally.

"She's stable" He replied "She's refusing to come and see him" He added, keeping his eyes fixed on his son and wondering just how Zoe could bare to be apart from him.

"I know it can be hard seeing your child like this, but as a professional you know how touch and go it can be at this early age"

Nick swallowed hard to try and hold back the tears, he knew very well that at such an early age things were very critical. His son would not be able to survive on his own for a long time and even if he did make it through it would be a tough and long process, "I know" He replied.

"Has baby Jordan got a name yet?" The doctor asked as he filled out all of his details ready for his stay in NICU.

Nick shook his head "No, not yet" He said "I haven't even thought about it" He added, running a hand through his hair in exhaustion. He and Zoe had never even discussed any names, they had never expected him to arrive for another couple of months.

His pager then began to bleep in his pocket, taking it out in a hurry he noticed that it was the ED "I'm needed downstairs, please page me if anything changes" He ordered, backing out of the room to go and check what was happening. It was quite a long race across the hospital to get from NICU on the 4th floor back down to the ED on the ground floor and he knew this was going to be a familiar route from changing to Zoe to his baby.

"Thanks for coming Marie" He said, pulling her into a hug as he breathlessly came out of the lift.

"Not a problem" She said, running a hand up and down his back. She could see how exhausted and tired he was looking, "Go and take break, I'll speak to Zoe"

"I need to go and apologize to her" He said, feeling extremely guilty "We had an argument"

"I can't even begin to imagine what you are both going through" She said, holding his hand to try and comfort his worried appearance.

Nick didn't say a word and guided her over to resus "I'm scared she's not going to change her mind" He admitted to his mother in law as they stopped before entering.

"Trust me darling, Zoe says many things that she doesn't mean, I will sort it" She tried to reassure him, strutting into resus and leaving Nick hanging outside of the doors.
