An Apprentice's Future

Author's Note: This is the climatic installment of the Batman Beyond Saga. Everything is coming together and this is the crossover fic. If you're a fan of either this series or Young Justice, than you will enjoy this! I am going to list the theme songs to various DC tv series and most of the theme songs can be found on Music of DC Comics: 75th Anniversary, which is available now, and the YJ Theme song is on its own album titled: Young Justice, which is also available. So if you don't have them, I suggest you go and buy them both!
Also, I had lots of help with this story. Reina Grayson deserves half the credit in getting 80% of this fic done. Reina and I worked on this chapter, for I wanted to have events in the future play out... There is some swearing but I think it's like 2 words. Just a warning…
Chapter 18
Music Playing: Justice League Unlimited Theme Music
Back in the Future…
26 minutes…
Meygan and Eolus stood over the pile of 50 Slade Bots. Both had a few bruises but they were still standing.
"That was fun," he told her.
"It was. Cyborg got deck 16 and decks 18 thru 21, Uncle Bart and the others aged heroes got. Deck 22 is calling us." Meygan was smiling. She was enjoying the fight even though the LOD seemed to be clueless as to what was happening. Letting go wasn't as hard as she thought it would be.
"I wish my mom had seen this," Komos told Rave.
"She will." Rave ran down the hall, Komos right behind her.
Strife smiled as Raven gave a slight gasp to the slap he gave her. "You're not doing anyone any favors by being stubborn. Slade wants those codes. You have that dumbass bond with Nightwing. Just tell me the codes."
Raven was chained to one wall, those chains re-enforce with his dark powers. She tried to break them without success. "As if I would," Raven said.
Cassie and Donna were chained in separate smaller cells, separated from the other, and Strife eyed the cells.
"Well, I'm sure I can get the codes from someone else." Strife then checked on Donna first, who glared at the demon. "Like Wonder Woman."
"She doesn't have them. Only Robin has them!" There was a hitch in Raven's voice, a hitch of concern within it.
Strife heard this and thought that the codes had been passed to kids; so he KNEW he would have some fun with his sister. "So, the brat with the broken leg has them. I can have some fun getting Robin IV to crack." The demon then started to leave out, knowing that Raven would do anything to protect a child.
"No!" Raven cried.
Strife paused and turned around. "I knew you'd see things my way."
"Actually, she doesn't." Rave blasted him from behind, sending him to the floor.
Strife was pissed. His eyes turned red as he glared. "My sister's protégé."
"I'm more than that. I'm the leader of Omega Squad."
Strife rammed into her from the floor, knocking them out of the room.
Eolus took that moment to fly inside.
"I thought your brother and cousin torn you apart emotionally," Strife said as he held Meygan against the wall.
"You may have a family, but you don't know ANYTHING about how a family works," Rave said as she tried to figure out her next course of action.
"And yet you KNOW that Red Bird and Nightwing II held those words in their minds and hearts...how else could I get them to say them."
"Fuck you, Strife!" She punched him in the face, which made him let go of her.
Eolus went to his mom first, and grabbed a section of chains and ripped them away from his mom. "Be right back mom," he said. He went to Donna Troy, the current Wonder Woman, and did the same thing.
Donna Troy... She eyed Eolus with skepticism.
Komos went to Raven and with two hands, pulled on Raven's chains.
He pulled once on them.
Then again.
And then, on the third try, got the chains off, freeing Raven.
And Donna stood there as Cassie hugged her son. "Eolus! You're ok!"
"Of course mom!" But he hugged his mom. He loved her.
Raven eyed the doorway. "Perhaps we should help Rave."
"She got this, Raven. Unless she yells," Komos told her.
"Eolus? How did you get away from the LOD sweeps?"
"Meygan and Vincent, mom. They grabbed as many of us as they could and took us to the past."
"You went to the past?!" Cassie cried.
"Mom, you were great as Wondergirl! I saw why Princess Diana wanted you as her protégé. As her replacement." Eolus added that last line for Donna's benefit. "I dare the LOD to fight THAT Justice League. We were safe."
"I see." Cassie didn't know how to take that comment.
"Even princesses make mistake," Donna said, making the stinging comment.
"What did you say!?" Eolus got right into Donna Troy's face.
"I'm Wonder Woman now. I'd watch that tone with me."
"Princess Diana never makes mistakes," Eolus defended. "And you...the only reason you're Wonder Woman is because my mom declined. Remember THAT."
"How dare you!" Donna looked ready to punch him.
"My mom's legacy was ripped from her...because of me. Because she fell in love with Oceanus." He saw the shocked looks from his mom, Donna and Raven. "Yes, I know who my dad is. I have his powers. And you Amazons...you all can be narrow minded all you want. I have a new family, one I will protect with my last breath!"
While Donna was flabbergasted, Komos turned to his mother. "Mom, I know you're mad at Dick, but I have been hanging with the team and when things got bad, Meygan made sure I made it to the past. She didn't get everyone, and it ate at her, which is why we're here-to free the future. And we can do it. So when things get back to how they should be, I plan to stay on as a full team member."
"Eolus..." Cassie said.
"And I'm going to earn my spot, because this team accepts me as I am." His stare was aimed at Donna.
Meanwhile, Meygan and Strife were destroying the hallway, crashing into walls, breaking said walls as the two fought.
Meygan wish that she and Mona were still together. But she released Mona from her oath and the demoness was now free. She missed the super strength.
Strife punched Meygan in the face as she kicked at him but she used her already injured leg and Strife caught it. He drove his fist into the bruised area, which could be seen from the cut in her costume.
Meygan cried out, falling to the floor as Strife kicked at her, forcing her away from him.
"You're no match for me, little human. And I will break you again. I would love to corrupt that little sister of yours. Her innocence is so tasty…What dark words are in her heart," he taunted.
Meygan glared at Strife, her eyes red with rage. "Stay. Away. From. My. SISTER!" Bad leg and all, Meygan ran at Strife, dodged a blast and punch, and places both hands on either side of his face and unleashed her powers on him.
Strife let out this horrific scream of utter terror.
Raven, Wondergirl, Wonder Woman and Komos ran from the room, seeing a black flare of power from Meygan bum-rush Strife relentlessly, her eyes bearing into him.
Raven tried to interfere and got thrown back.
There was no stopping Meygan at this point. No way to control her.
After two minutes, Strife fell from her grasp, his eyes blank as he hit the floor.
Meygan stood over him, her face determined. "You will never break another's emotional spirit again."
Komos was the first to speak. "Meygan?"
She looked at Eolus. "You ready to finish this, Komos?"
"Yeah. Let's do this, Fearless One." Eolus gave his mom a kiss on the cheek and flew passed Meygan to clear out another floor.
Both Donna and Cassie looked to Raven.
"She's found her center. I'm not her mentor...anymore." Raven was proud of Meygan. Her protégé had found the control she had strived for…for 9 years. And she was very proud.
In the Past…
Vincent found his older sister after a small search. Her words still stung him. But he needed her to understand. He didn't want Meygan to die. But unless Carlos came to them, they were stuck in the past. "Hey," he said almost quietly as he approached Areina, who was hitting target after target with fireballs.
There was no response as his sister kept throwing fireballs.
"Areina? Can we talk?" His voice was hesitating. He left his bow and quiver with Siren.
There was still no response.
"Sis, I didn't know. Honest. I don't want to lose my other sister."
"It's not that, Vincent."
"Then what? I can't go after her unless Carlos shows up. And he's not responding to any calls from us."
"I don't know what I was thinking when I said all of that. I just don't want to lose anyone else, and you knew she had left us behind. You're not a bad little brother; I was just hurt." Areina said as she finally turned to face her brother.
"I was. If I had bothered to look into our bond, I could have stopped her."
"Didn't you say she could block you from seeing her mind when she wanted to? I'm sure that if she sensed you searching, she would have done it," Areina said as she ran over to her brother and gave him the biggest hug she could. "I don't know why, but I think she can do it, even if she and Eolus are alone."
"But I'm not with her..." Vincent hugged back, his fear for Meygan in his voice.
"I get the feeling that she wanted it that way. Even with your bond; she didn't want you to SEE her die," Areina said as she released her part of the hug.
Vincent let go of the hug on his end. "I still... Areina, we've always hung out since we were kids. She looked after me when the guys were looking to tease me. I don't...I don't know how to not have her around. When Slade attacked, I almost got myself killed. She knew then that Slade wanted me dead. I learned later why but at 12..."
"I can understand that; remember she saved me from the Legion of Doom; but after what happened when I was 11 I knew I wouldn't live forever. Meygan's a Greyson and believe me we can be stubborn as hell," Areina said smiling
He smiled back. "I hope she's safe..."
"Vincent? Areina?" Roy called out.
"Hey dad!" Areina said
Roy cautiously entered. "Ok. You two haven't killed each other."
"DAD!" cried Vincent.
"It's alright dad; I was just upset," Areina said.
"Molly's even more upset. Her brother and sister aren't here. She kinda needs her cousins," Reiena said as she entered as well.
"Yea, you're right mom; we'll head out and comfort her," Areina remarked.
Just then Vincent picked up on something that Areina had said before their parents arrived. "What happened when you were 11?"
"I don't like to think about it, but I was kidnapped from the private school I attended by some thugs that managed to get past the school's security. Bruce made the payment, but the thugs wanted more right then. I got shot too close to my heart...kinda like with Meygan, but it didn't hit anything important. Bruce told me I had to be shocked one time while I was in the ER." Areina said. Areina pulled her V-Neck shirt to the side to show them the scar she had from the incident; then she saw Vincent was about to cry.
"Rain..." Vincent whispered. He hugged his sister, having no idea that she went through something similar and all because she was Batman's granddaughter.
Reiena and Roy smiled as their children hugged. But both wondered who Vincent's mom was.
"And why did you say 'Rain' before we hugged?" Areina asked as the four heroes started to head back to the main room.
"My nickname for you. It took a while to find one."
Areina only ever had ONE nickname in her life and that one came from her father and was continued through her life by her uncle. "I like it; how did you come up with it."
"Just thought of it. C'mon, Molly needs us."
Back in the Future…
21 minutes…
Meygan and Eolus were closer to their goal as they were in the room where Molly's b-day party took place. The two were careful.
Up above them, on the balcony was a foot on the lower railing, the rest of the figure was hidden in shadow. The wall hugged the figure's back as the appropriate moment arrived.
Rave felt the presence. She stopped halfway into the room. Komos turned to ask her with a raise of an eyebrow.
She raised her eyes upward and although the two have never teamed before now, Komos got it. He went on ahead.
A smile came to the figure's hidden face.
When Eolus was gone, Rave pulled out her sais, holding them tightly.
Rave looked right at the figure and anger was growing inside her.
"It's been a long time, hasn't it, Meygan," the figure said. "A month, a year, a millennium...too long for my taste."
Meygan turned around, queuing Slade to leap from his perch to the floor, he just a couple of feet away from her.
Slade/Ian smiled as Meygan stood there, waiting. "You are nothing but trouble."
"I'm a Greyson," she said quietly.
"A dead girl walking. This fight will be our last."
"I agree." Meygan watched for the smallest movement from him.
"Ready to die?" he asked.
Meygan was terrified inside. But outside, she was calm. She had to be. "I can't die. You tried, remember?"
"That's precious, Meygan. So very, very...precious..."
Eolus cried out and his cry echoed down the hall, which made Meygan jump slightly.
Slade leaped up and spin kicked Meygan in the face.
One of her sais caught his ankle and tossed him aside. He caught himself and landed on his feet.
He pulled out his Bo Staff and attacked Meygan. The two attacked and countered each other for several minutes. Bruises appeared on Meygan but for Slade/Ian, he had far less.
Meygan continued to fight, she was determined to win. She tossed down her sais and ran at him, leaping up and got him in the shoulder, her dark powers re- enforcing her attack.
Slade/Ian was pushed back, grunting as he lost his staff.
She pressed her luck and attacked him over and over again.
He had enough. He caught her leg and aimed an elbow at the bruise on her leg. As she screamed, he picked her up and tossed her into the nearest wall. "Did you think you had a chance against me? Your father and aunt never did. But you? You died. I didn't miss. I NEVER miss. So...dead girl, have you made peace with your demons?"
"I will never die! You did this to me! Made me like this! You deserve no mercy!" Meygan threw her birdarang at Slade/Ian.
As he smacked it aside, he caught her on coming leg, and tossed her into the wall, never letting go. He then pulled her off the wall and kicked her in the ribs after he threw her into the floor. He then elbowed her caught leg just below her knee, breaking her leg there.
Meygan kicked out with her remaining good leg and backed up as he was slammed into the wall. She tried to get up but could not put weight on that broken leg. Meygan saw Slade/Ian move toward her and she reached out with her hand. "Retaw, Retaw!"
The sprinklers opened up and the water hit Slade/Ian, keeping him at bay.
"Your wizard's magic is pitiful," he told her.
She got to her feet but leaned heavily against the wall for the pain from her broken leg was impossible to ignore.
"You can't fight me. You can't stop me. I will make sure you die...and stay dead!" He moved forward against the water.
Instincts took over for Meygan. "Azarath, Metrion...ZYNTHOS!" A large dark power unleashed itself and hit Slade/Ian with everything she had. "You helped make me this way, Slade. Now let me show you what I am."
She unleashed herself on him.
He screamed after her powers bombarded him after a minute. He screamed until he became hoarse. Then he stopped altogether.
She let him go.
He fell, unconscious, to the floor.
Meygan panted, watching Slade/Ian for any movement.
Back in the Past…
Meanwhile, Molly sat in a corner of the main ops area, not responding to anything anyone was trying to do.
Airhawk was watching his best friend with worry. He went to her and sat next to her. "She'll be ok, Moll. Mey-Mey survives everything."
"I guess," Molly said softly.
Andrew curled his wings around her, hiding her from view.
"Your wings are better," Molly said.
"Not as good as this." Andrew kissed Molly on the cheek.
Molly blushed. But she leaned into Andrew. And he held her.
"Um, Dick?" Wally said in a whisper. "Take a look."
Dick saw how Andrew's wings hid the two. "They're kids, Wally."
Luna chuckled. "They like each other," she whispered.
Dick's eyes widened as Wally laughed.
Then Vincent and Areina came in.
"They're just kids," he repeated; trying to convince himself more than the others.
"That's nothing, Uncle Dick. I heard that you wanted to kill Orin while we were swimming in his pool, and I won't say what I was wearing," Areina remarked.
"What!?" Dick looked ready to throttle Orin at first opportunity.
"No worries, he was gentle and didn't try ANYTHING."
"And Kaldur allowed that!?" Conner asked. "And what constitutes as anything?"
"I am sure my son would not have tried anything."
"Uncle Kaldur raised Orin right; and he KNEW his limits as my aunt had already threatened him if he did try anything," Areina said with a smile
"My future wife?" Dick asked.
"Oh yea; you didn't think Molly and Meygan got magic as their meta power did you?" Areina said; her smile turning into a smirk. "And I wouldn't be talking Conner...you don't even want to know about Kevin."
Conner looked out of place. "Kevin?" he asked.
"My big brother," said Luna.
"I won't say anymore, except this; Uncle Dick, all us Greyson kids have found our true loves, and you were NOT happy about Orin and Kevin at one point."
"Crap. I guess I need the shotgun after all."
"Yea, after what I've seen Meygan do; you do NOT want to tick her off."
Roy laughed. "I'll teach you to shoot an arrow."
"Hey!" cried Areina. "There's already a line of people to kill Orin if he breaks my heart; I don't need Uncle Dick shooting him with an arrow."
"I wasn't going to shoot Orin first."
"Don't shoot Kevin!" cried Brian.
"Don't worry Brian, Kevin would block it, and if he doesn't he's part Kryptonian, remember?"
Vincent walked over to Molly and Andrew. "Hey Andrew. Is there room for one more?"
Andrew sighed and retracted his wings. Molly was being held by him.
"Aw," said Siren.
Vincent kneeled behind them. "Molly...she's fine."
"I know," Molly said, sounding so sad.
"She survives everything," he said, repeating words she often said about Meygan.
"I know," she repeated.
Vincent looked back, looking for help.
Luna step toward and contorted her body, her bones popping.
Everyone backed up, nervous as she changed into her wolf form.
Luna made her way over to Molly and Vincent moved out of the way. She then licked her best friend's face.
Molly laughed.
Then Luna howled, before putting her wolf head into Molly's lap.
Andrew chuckled as Molly smiled, shaking her head.
Then Luna rolled her wolf body around on the floor and Molly stood up, Andrew climbing to his feet as well.
"Ok, ok. I'm feeling better."
Luna barked and then her bones popped as she shifted back to her human form. "Ow. That still hurts."
"Thanks, Luna," said Molly.
"You sad is never a good thing," Luna said.
Back in the future…
16 minutes...
Eolus did his best to fix Meygan's broken leg. But even taping it up tightly didn't help so she took to flying. He was worried that she wasn't up to the task.
Meanwhile, Jason, Tim, Barb, Dick, Serenity, Eric, Mathen, Orin and Kevin were fighting Slade Bots. Well, not Serenity and Eric. But that didn't matter.
Jason found his guns and Mathen, Dick and Tim- their belts and Orin- his water bearers. The Slade Bots were falling.
Meanwhile, Luthor was livid. "How did a jailbreak happen under our noses!?"
"Drow's down. So's Slade and Star Sapphire," Yami commented.
"Then we take the fight to them." Darkin pointed to one screen where Eolus and Meygan took down another 20 Slade Bots.
"Then let's do it!" Yami was eager for a fight.
"Maybe we can soften them up..." Shriek said as he put on his helmet. He aimed his sonic discs at the hall leading down from the main control room.
"We need careful timing..." Luthor told Shriek.
15 minutes...
Meygan was ahead of Eolus, their goal closer at hand.
There was a rumble...And then a sound; a sonic sound wave came right at them.
Meygan put up a dark shield to stop it. But the sound wave punched through and smacked into Meygan, dropping her as she covered her ears.
Eolus ran to check on her as he heard the rumble again. He picked her up and made a run for it. He got a few feet away before he got smacked from behind.
Both teens were dazed.
Dick's group felt the double blast a few decks below and they got shook up.
"What the heck was that?" Eric asked, still in pain from his leg, and the shaking from the double blast didn't help it either.
Dick thought for a moment about what villains could do that, then he remembered something from Bruce's NEW files. "Shriek."
"Who the slag is that?" Mathen and Jason asked at the same time.
"From what I know, he was hired at one point to kill Bruce by Derek Powers then after he lost his hearing he vowed to kill Terry for that loss. The LOD must have recruited him," Dick said.
"Great! And they let him loose!" cried Tim. A batarang found a bots head.
"Sounds like it, but Meygan must be making a big fuss if they called him in," Kevin said, proud of his mate, but also worried for her.
Even though she was still suffering from labor pains, Serenity had used her own healing magic to heal everyone up as much as she could.
"Mathen, take Orin, Kevin and Eric to the main control room," Jason said asserting himself. "She'll need help."
"What about my mom?" Mathen said worriedly.
"Mathen John Greyson, you go help your sister. I'll be fine," Lady Merline said to her son.
"I don't think she wants it." Bruce appeared after the last Slade Bot fell. With him were two Batgirls.
"Bruce!" Jason ran to the old man and gave him a hug. That was so unlike Red Hood but that hug meant so much to both men.
"I thought I said no Batgirl," Barb told the costume clad girls.
"It helped, didn't it?" The batgirl in the full face mask remarked.
"We were counter-hacking the LOD so they couldn't get access to watchtower," the other batgirl said.
"But it worked. He hacked the cameras," Max said. "They realize now that you all are free."
"Dana...Max...you two stay out of this," Dick told them.
"I can hold my own; I don't care if you were the original Robin; we both held our own against Star Sapphire AND Sinestro till Meygan and Eolus got there," Max remarked, wanting to help do more than just counter hack the LOD
"Give it a rest," Jason told Dick. "You two can help clear the decks with us." He turned to Mathen and the others. "And why are you four here!? Go!"
"She doesn't want help," Bruce told them.
"Why not?" Dick asked.
"Meygan didn't seek you out. I know what she wants to do. And the team would be in her way."
"I don't care. I let her down once. Never again." Mathen ran off, Aqualad, SBP and Robin IV ran after him.
13 minutes...
Meygan and Eolus reached the main control center. It was empty and that unnerved the pair.
"Eolus...keep the Slade Bots out of this room. I got this," she said out loud.
As Eolus left, she pulled out her eskrima sticks. She knew they were there...
With a battle cry, Mordred fell from about her and with his sword raised, looked to kill her.
She raised both sticks to stop the decent of the sword but those sticks were sliced and the sword caught her shoulder.
She held her shoulder as she floated backwards. Meygan then smiled. "What, no mommy to hold your hand?" She taunted.
Mordred yelled at her. "You! I'll get you!" he cried.
He ran at her.
Meygan raised her hand and a thunder bolt struck it, and Excalibur formed in her grip. She blocked his sword with hers.
Mordred was shocked.
"Mordred...you look like you saw a ghost," she taunted.
Mordred broke away. Then he came at her.
Meygan countered him, her sword skills as good as his.
The two exchange sword strokes and counters.
Mordred looked worn out. He was having a hard time breaking through Meygan's swordsmanship skills after just a few minutes.
Meygan kept her senses on alert; she knew they were there.
On cue, a vine whip headed for Meygan. She pushed Mordred back with Excalibur and leaped away. She got clipped in the shoulder from a ray as Luthor landed where Meygan had stood fighting Mordred and Yami landed behind her.
It was a loose circle and she was trapped in the middle.
Meygan eyed Yami while sending where Luthor and Mordred were.
"So you have no one to help you fight us," said Luthor. "How Greyson of you."
"I don't need no one. I don't want no one," Meygan spat.
Yami charged her from behind. At the last second, she did a backward leapfrog jump and he crashed into Luthor.
Mordred rushed her just as she landed. She met his sword strike and countered, Luthor and Yami forgotten.
In the Past…
Vincent sat in a corner of the main monitor center, staring out the window, at the stars, thinking about Meygan and her insane mission to take on the LOD alone.
He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly.
It was worth a shot. To help Meygan, he had to try.
He went for the center of his bond with Meygan. He forced his mind to stay on task but it was hard when he could still hear the voices of the others. He couldn't stop until he found it.
Then he found it. It was a large black sphere with purple webbing around it like a shield.
He walked to it and reached out to touch it. It shocked him back.
"What are you doing son?"
Vincent froze. He slowly turned around and saw his father there with battle damage. Like from an explosion.
Vincent moved his mouth but nothing came out.
"It's ok, Vincent. I found out about you after I died." He looked behind his son. "You're trying to get through."
"I have to help her," Vincent said.
"Did she ask for help? Greysons never ask for help." Roy smiled.
"Well...no..." Vincent admitted.
"Then shoot it."
"Huh?"
"Take your arrow and shoot it. Greysons are stubborn. They won't ask for help so you have to help them."
Vincent asked the most burning question on his mind, one he'd always wanted to ask. "Were you mad that mom never told you about me?"
Roy's eyes saddened. "At first. But then I saw Slade go after Artemis. I realized that he ignored you because he thought you were someone else's; but she did it to protect you. And I'm so grateful for that. You've made me very proud, Vincent. Now, go save Dick's daughter. Imagine your bow and arrow and aim it at that sphere."
Vincent closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them. "You're not mad that Uncle Wally is going to be my step dad?"
"Artemis deserves to be happy...and Wally will take care of you."
Vincent closed his eyes and imagined his bow and arrow.
Vincent felt his bow in his hand. With his eyes closed, he lifted that bow at the sphere, and then the arrow was loaded in. He aimed carefully.
Meygan meanwhile was dealing with Yami, Luthor and Mordred all at once. Small cuts and bruises were showing up on her.
Talia waited for the right moment to jump in. She eyed how Meygan wielded Excalibur. The 'villainess' was impressed by the skills Meygan had. She was deciding on the guns or the sword.
Meygan blocked Mordred, while Luthor tried to blast her. She leaped over Mordred and he got hit.
Shriek then blasted sound waves at her. It got her but Yami and Luthor too. They all got thrown into a wall.
"Hey!" cried Yami. "Can't you aim those!?"
"Shut up before I send the next one at you!" Shriek said angrily.
Talia shook her head. "Amateurs..."
Meygan shook her head as she peeled herself off of the wall, she saw a flash of a sword and she blocked with Excalibur.
Meygan and Talia glared at each other, trying to press their luck with the other.
"I did not know YOU had such skills," Talia said.
"Just walk away. Otherwise, you're going to lose your head." Meygan kicked Talia in the stomach and tried to cut the villain's head off.
All of a sudden, her block on her bond with Vincent was gone. Vincent's worry and fear for her hit her as good as any punch.
Meygan shook her head and Mordred recovered enough to cut Meygan's sword arm.
