Poppy tried her hardest to be there for Mollie in the coming months. She tried to look after Charli as best she could, even getting up in the middle of the night for feeds, but nothing she did compared to having her mother. Charli was growing at such a rate now. She had beautiful, shiny brown eyes that were full of life and soft brown curls on her head. Her smile could break a thousand hearts. Poppy wished Mollie was well enough to see how fast her daughter was growing up. But her treatment made her tired and sick, and she had so many complications. She often had prolonged hospital stays. Every evening she was in hospital, Poppy would visit with Charli and tell her everything she'd missed.
Everything was going very well until one morning in June. Mollie was in hospital again and Poppy and Charli had been to see her the previous evening. Poppy was lying awake as the alarm clock flashed 2:27am. Something was wrong. Poppy got up and made her way to the room where Charli was sleeping. Gently, she opened the door to check on her. A beam of light from the landing lamp shone through the door and onto the sleeping child's face. Everything was so calm and peaceful. Poppy stood for a moment and watched the little girl. How could this sweet, innocent little girl be wrapped up in all the chaos around her? It just wasn't fair.
