A/N: So sorry for the long wait, but I just couldn't focus to write anything. I need a lot more free time to write than I have. But anyhow, I'm hoping to finish this, then finish P&P, before getting to work on two or three longer stories, but they're probably not going to be from this fandom. Sadface. Anyhow, enough rambling, on with the story!
Ellen smiled at Viola as she left. Viola's grin as she walked out of the house was adorable. Loki was still finishing his work, and May had left with Rue and Angie a while ago to go up to the town and hang out. Viola was going home to get ready for their date. Once Viola was a fair distance away, Ellen shut the door… and immediately her smile was replaced with fear.
Ellen was very nervous about the whole thing, and she had begun having second thoughts about going out that night. She wasn't sure why she felt the way she did for Viola, nor was she sure why Viola had proposed a date. Okay, so they both liked one another, but why? What was it that made Viola so special to her, and more importantly, why did Viola like her back? And what if she messed up and Viola never wanted to see her again? Or-
"If you keep worrying about it like this, you're going to work yourself up into a frenzy of nerves and anxiety, and then you won't be able to go on your date." Loki said from behind her. Ellen whipped around and glared at him before she realised what she was doing.
"Please don't read my mind, it's rude…" She said. In truth, she didn't know if he'd read her mind or not, but she assumed he had.
Loki's grin was enormous as he replied. "I could hear Viola ask you from downstairs. That's how I knew you were dating. As for the worry, that's plastered all over your face. So, what is it you're worried about?"
Ellen paused for a moment, thinking about how to best say what she was feeling. "I- I guess… I guess I'm worried that she doesn't really know me that well. I'm scared… what if I mess up, or she finds out something that makes her not like me!? And more to the point, why would she ask me out at all? I mean, I like her, but that's because she's so nice and kind and pretty…" Ellen started rambling, going off into a dreamy haze as she thought about Viola. With a grin, Loki interrupted her reverie by replying.
"Ellen, remember… she practically knows your entire life history. If she likes you enough to ask you out now, then she'll keep liking you. As for why she asked you out… Again, she knows so much about you. You may have only just met, but she knows you intimately – For her, it's like she's known you all her life."
Ellen considered Loki's words with a thoughtful expression. "You're probably right…" She murmured. She started smiling, reassured by Loki's words. However, almost as fast as the smile appeared, it dropped again in utter panic. "Oh god, I don't know what to wear!" She said, suddenly realising that the lack of arrangements about the date other than the meeting time and place (6:30 by Ellen's house) meant she didn't know where they would be going, or how much to dress up. Running up the stairs, she looked into her cupboards at the new clothes Loki had got her. Trying to work out what Viola would want to do, she was almost hyperventilating when the phone rang. She answered it quickly, with an out of breath greeting.
"Hello Ellen, how are you doing?" May's voice replied.
"I'm fine," Ellen said, "Just getting ready for tonight, that's all. What are you and the other two doing right now? Oh, and have you seen Viola since you left?"
"Well, I'm done over here, and Rue and Angie are somewhere doing things that shouldn't be spoken of in polite company. I saw Viola a couple of minutes ago; she was getting everything ready for your date, which reminds me, I believe congratulations are in order. After all, snagging Viola's certainly an achievement, considering she's never even considered dating anyone before."
"Oh right, well, I'm trying to get ready for tonight…" Ellen replied.
"Hehe… it's tough isn't it? No idea what to wear or do. You want to impress, but at the same time you don't want to overdo it?"
"Yes, that's exactly how it feels. How did you guess?"
"Because that's how Rue and Angie described it to me when they first started dating. But if you're stuck, do you want my help? I mean, I may not know a lot about dates, but I know a ton about Viola! A truly massive amount in fact…"
"That would be brilliant!" Ellen said "Thank you May!"
"No problem Ellen. I'll see you in ten."
Ellen smiled as May walked in the door. May immediately hugged her, and though Ellen was a little shocked, she started laughing gently midway through the hug. "What's this for?"
"Well, I really can't help myself, I mean… What with you being so adorable and needing my help." She replied with a grin. "Anyhow, we need to get you ready. First, we need to pick out some clothes." Pulling Ellen up the stairs, May walked into her room. She quickly went to the wardrobe. "Now, you look amazing, you don't really need any sort of accentuation… How should we play it, cute or sexy?" She murmured, stopping in between two dresses. "I think cute is definitely the way to go. So, we want a simple dress, in a colour that looks good for your hair. Short sleeved or sleeveless, and it has to come to a little above the knee. As for the neckline, well… Not too high, but we don't want it too low either. So… This one?" She pulled out a royal blue sleeveless dress, and she looked at it appraisingly before holding it out to Ellen. "Well, it's got everything I wanted, so try it on." She said.
Ellen was a little nervous, but she took the dress anyway. Then she stood there and waited for May to leave. May just waited for her to get changed. After a minute or two of awkwardness, May realised what she was doing. "Sorry Ellen!" She said with a yelp, blushing madly and running out of the room. Ellen quickly got changed, knocking on the door once she was done to signal to May to come back in. May took one look at Ellen, blushing in embarrassment, and gasped, a small smile gracing her lips. "Oh yes, that's perfect! When Viola sees that, she'll be having nosebleeds all night!" May said.
"Nosebleeds… Why would this give her a nosebleed?" Ellen asked.
"It's a figure of speech. When someone sees something extremely cute, pretty or beautiful, there was an old belief that the blood would rush to their face so fast that rather than blushing, the pressure would cause the blood vessels in their nose to burst, which in scenes is a nosebleed. But it was just an expression; there was no actual basis in anything whatsoever."
Ellen was thoughtful, and then a puzzled expression came over her face. "But… I'm not cute or pretty…" she said with complete honesty. May was about to laugh when she realised Ellen was dead serious, causing her jaw to drop.
"Ellen… Why would you say that?"
"Because it's true."
"It's not!" May shouted vehemently. Realising that she'd shouted, and looking at Ellen's slightly shocked face, she blushed. "I mean, that's not true. You are very pretty. With most people, I'd say the next step after choosing clothes is makeup, but honestly, you don't need it. All we need to do with your hair is brush it, as I think it will look best down – Actually, you might want a hair clip just to keep it out of your eyes – and you're all but done. I saw a dark pair of sandals in the wardrobe which will go perfectly with this. That's it. You don't need anything else – you're near perfect as you are." May's grin quickly returned. "And when Viola sees you like this, she's going to love it."
"You think so?"
"I know so. Now, come here and let me brush your hair."
Ellen heard the bell ring, and she walked down the stairs with May ahead of her. When they got to the door, May opened it a fraction and looked out. Viola stood there, her hair in two plaits as usual, she was wearing a plain white dress, again the norm for her, and her eyes sparkled with excitement. May was able to notice a few changes however, like the new perfume, or the slightly shiny nails (some sort of clear nail varnish May presumed). She was blushing slightly, and had a red rose in her hands.
"Yes?" Said May. Viola looked slightly shocked to see her there, but she quickly recovered.
"Is Ellen there?" Viola asked, not sure of what to do.
May simply smiled at her, then let the door swing open to allow Viola to see Ellen. Viola looked visibly stunned, her jaw dropping open at the sight before her as May whispered a goodbye to Ellen, before slipping past Viola and leaving with a smile. Ellen looked at Viola with a shy smile. "So… um… do you like it?" Ellen asked, her voice so quiet that Viola thought she had imagined it. As Viola tried to compose herself, Ellen blushed and looked down at the ground.
When Viola finally got her head straight, she grabbed Ellen and hugged her. "Like it? I love it! You're so pretty!" she said with a grin.
Ellen's smile grew slightly, whilst her blush grew a lot. "T-Thanks, but I've got nothing on you… You look absolutely stunning."
Now it was Viola's turn to blush. "Thank you, but… it's nothing special. I'm just wearing what I normally wear."
Ellen's blush faded as she grinned at Viola. "Yes, and that's perfect." Viola's blush got even darker, and Ellen felt strangely happy at that. It's nice to know that what I think means so much to her, especially seeing as though I feel the same way about her and what she thinks of me… Ellen paused for a few seconds, before quickly grabbing Violas head and kissing her. Once again, Viola was so shocked at the abruptness of the action that it took her a short while to react and kiss back, but once she did they were both in heaven, neither of them noticing the world outside of small bubble that contained them. When Ellen finally let go of Viola and broke the kiss, they both gasped for air.
Ellen looked into Viola's eyes as she caught her breath. "Viola…" She murmured, before hugging her and burying her face in the crook of her neck. Viola responded by wrapping her arms around Ellen's waist. For a long moment they stood there, eyes closed, both of them quietly delighting in the others presence.
After a minute or two, Viola broke the spell with a soft kiss on Ellen's cheek. "C'mon, we should get going. We're meant to be on a date." And with that, the two of them walked off into the night, hand in hand.
A/N: Ahh… This feels like a cop out. I got to 1700 odd words and then my creativity died. But I hope I managed to end it nicely for you guys. It's been a blast writing this (all except the last two or three paragraphs, which took about a month). I hope you enjoyed, and I'm sorry if you don't like the ending.
Thank you for reading,
